The Late Padma Shri Dr. B. V. Rao

Dr. Jain was born on 29th Feb. 1940. He graduated from
Rajasthan University in 1962. After his post graduation
in Poultry Science with major in ‘Animal Breeding’ from
Punjab Agriculture University, he joined as Assistant
Professor in Udaipur Agriculture University in 1966.
After gaining a Ph.D. in ‘Quantitative Genetics’ in 1971 at
the University of British Columbia. in Vancouver, Canada,
he returned in 1971 and again joined as Assistant
Professor in Udaipur University where he taught various
subjects.

In 1974, he was selected by UPSC as Director, Central
Poultry Breeding Farm, Bhubaneswar. As director he
worked for six years where he planned and executed
the breeding program for improvement of egg
production in both White Leghorn and RIR breeds.
During his tenure, Central poultry breeding farm
released one strain of RIR for commercial exploitation.
He also set up a random sample layer and broiler test
unit at Bhubaneswar and conducted the first test at the
centre.

In 1980, when Late Dr. B.V. Rao wanted to start a pure
line breeding project, he invited Dr. Jain to join him and
help him in establishing the pure line breeding unit both
for broiler and layer. Dr. Jain left Government job and
joined Dr.Rao and took up the challenge to establish
pure line projects. As a Chief Geneticist, he planned and
executed research program separately for broilers and
layers

He recruited and trained necessary human resources for
successful execution of the breeding program and
developed the required computer systems for statistical
and genetical analysis of research data to make right
genetic decision. He tailored the breeding program
according to the needs of Indian poultry farmers and
overcame the biggest challenge that is to develop
products (Broilers and Layers) which perform better than
the imported products in Indian type of environmental
and husbandry conditions

as well as the market requirements and thereby give
maximum returns to Indian Poultry farmers.
The layer strain, BV300 developed by Dr. Jain and his
team has been the market leader consistently for the
last 30 years. The market share of BV300 has been over
80 percent of the total layer sales in India inspite of the
availability of various well-known International Breeds.

Similarly, the performance of Vencobb strain of broilers
developed by Dr. Jain and his team improved
dramatically over the years. Vencobb market share
increased from 22 percent in 1981 to 75 percent in 2015
in rapidly growing market inspite of availability of
various international broiler breeds in India.
The most significant impact of indigenous breeding
program conducted by Dr. Jain and his special
contribution to Indian Poultry Industry is that small

and marginal farmers with very small land holding and
very little investment could take up poultry as their
vocation by constructing sheds with local material like
thatch roof and still get standard performance. This has
brought great prosperity to many farmers who increased
their flock size from 1000 to 100,000 and more birds
over the years.
Dr. Jain is the only poultry geneticist in the world
credited for successful breeding of both layers and
broilers.

He has authored a number of scientific papers in reputed
journals and popular articles in poultry magazines. He
has presented scientific papers in several national &
international conferences and symposia.
Acknowledging his work, the Department of Science and
Technology, Government of India, conferred the
“National Award for R & D Efforts in Industry” to Venco
in 1990 and to VRB in 1994. Venco also received “Best
Productivity Performance Award” in 1995-96.

In recognition of lifetime achievements of Dr. Jain and
his outstanding contribution to the poultry industry and
Indian Agriculture at large, he was conferred the
prestigious first Dr. M. S. Swaminathan Award in 2005.
He was presented scroll of honour by Indian Poultry
Science Association in 2008.

In recognition of dedicated contribution to poultry
science and the worldwide poultry industry, above and
beyond the call of duty, Dr. Jain was elected to the
“International Poultry Hall of Fame” by World Poultry
Science Association in the meeting held in Brazil in the
year 2012.

Shri Mannava Peda Seshaiah and his wife
Nagaratnamma started a small poultry farm way back in
1968 in Saroornagar with 250 birds and duly naming the
business in the name of his wife as Ratnam Poultry
Farm”. Shri. M.P. Seshaiah today is one of the leading
poultry farmer and an important poultry luminary
having a vast experience of 45 years in the poultry
industry.

A close associate of the late Dr BV Rao Shri M.P Seshaiah
is one of the senior most and important poultry industry
leaders in the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
He is involved in the poultry farmer’s welfare activities
since his entry into the poultry industry. He has been a
source of inspiration and support to thousands of
farmers in the state.

He has held various posts in Andhra Pradesh Poultry
Federation. It was during his 16 years of tenure as
President that Andhra Pradesh Poultry Federation has
received fame and recognition not only from the poultry
farmers but also among state and central government
and its agencies and agricultural universities. During his
tenure he achieved tax incentives and other benefits
from the state government for the poultry farmers and
the industry.

He conducted numerous seminars on poultry and Dr. B.V
Rao Kalayana Mandapam at Vijayawada stands
testimony to his efforts in building a strong organization
for the poultry farmers. He is extremely proud of his
associations with VH egg powder plant, Agrocorpex,
Andhra Pradesh Poultry Federation and NECC.

Shri M.P Seshaiah is currently is the Chairman of
RATNAM POULTRY PVT LIMITED group with interest in
poultry layer farms, broiler breeding & hatchery,
agricultural and horticultural farms , aqua farms and real
estate & construction. He is also the Director of
Agrocorpex India Limited and Founder Director of Bharat
Egg Producers Association which are part of the National
Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) with which he was
also actively associated.

Apart from the poultry activities Shri M.P Seshaiah is
involved in various philanthropic activities for the
betterment of the society.

Shri Kosuri Venkata Surya Subba Raju is the Director of
Bhagyanagar Hatcheries Pvt Ltd and Promoter of Seetha
Rama Raju Poultry Farms and a Director in Bharat Egg
Producer’s Association. He has been in Live stock
Business Since 1973. He continues to encourage and help
small and marginal farmers to improve their livelihood
through his dynamism and relentless services coupled
with kindness has earned him a tremendous amount of
goodwill among poultry farmers of Telangana and
Andhra Pradesh.
K.V.S. Subba Raju

Shri K.V.S. Subba Raju started a poultry farm with 1250
birds at Hyderabad in 1974 on the advice of late Dr. B.V
Rao and is now endowed with a layer farm with the
capacity of 2,00,000 layer birds and 1,20,000 broiler
parent birds and other affiliated business.
Shri K.V.S. Subba Raju is an acknowledged expert in
sourcing essential feed ingredients and vitamins and
plays a major role in the upliftment of farmers by
participating actively in organizations engaged in the
welfare of the poultry industry.

Shri K.V.S. Subba Raju is presently NECC’s Vice Chairman
(Price Co-ordination) and was its Hyderabad Zonal
Chairman till last year. He was presented the gold medal
by Dr. C. Krishna Rao Endowment Trust, Hyderabad for
rendering yeomen service to poultry farmers and the
industry.
K.V.S. Subba Raju

Shri Jagapati Rao is one of the tallest leaders in India’s
poultry industry. He is known for his brilliant thinking,
straight forwardness and social values and is acutely
diligent in his approach towards any task. While he
carries his responsibilities with grit and determination,
he believes in proper delegation of work and ensures
that it is consistently implemented.

It all began with a chance meeting with the late Dr BV
Rao in Mumbai in 1966 which set about a legendary
friendship between the stalwarts resulting in Shri
Jagapati Rao becoming the founder director of
Venkateshwara Hatcheries Group looking after its
Hyderabad operations for nearly 25 years. He is well-
known for his intellectual dynamism and his ability to
drive innovation to newer frontiers.

In addition to being on the boards of VH Group and SH
Group he holds important positions in many national
and international poultry organisations and is actively
involved in associations like NECC where he was founder
treasurer.

The SH Group having forayed into business in 1978, with
its flagship company Srinivasa Hatcheries Ltd, is a highly
accomplished business conglomerate with diverse
commercial businesses and presence across multiple
sectors such as Poultry Breeding, Broiler Integration,
Soya Processing and Poultry Feed.

Thirty seven years of outstanding and intrepid leadership
have chartered its way to success and have enabled to
reach the pinnacle of exemplary organisational
excellence
It is little wonder then that Sri Jagapati Rao, a Post
Graduate in International Relations from Jadhavpur
University, is now a household name among poultry
farmers in the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh
and across India.

The road to success has not been easy for Sri Jagapati
Rao. Yet, when the going gets tough, the tough get going.
That, ladies and gentlemen in a nutshell, is what Shri
Jagapati Rao is all about.

Accolades would not suffice to describe MB Desai’s
incredible stature in the poultry industry. He stepped
into the industry as a mere 25 year old during a time
fraught with challenges and grew Prabhat Poultry in
1962 from a 1000 layer bird farm to become, in two
short years -- Asia largest poultry farmer then.
That Prabhat Poultry now presently boasts nearly 4 lakh
layer birds is a tribute to his incredible foresight.

MB Desai has come a long way from being a commerce
college lecturer and founder treasurer in Association of
Poultry Industry in 1963 – India’s first ever nationwide
poultry association – to becoming founder director of
Agrocorpex India and chairman of NECC Mumbai zone.
His enduring values of human relationship arise from his
vast experiences as a Govt of Maharashtra appointee on
the Minimum Wage Committees for several years. In fact
he completed two terms as a member of the state’s
important committee.

As Poultry Industry’s mentor who leads by example, MB
Desai will always be the torchbearer whose resolute
dedication and perseverance will serve as a beacon of
hope and progress.

Sardar Gurdip Singh’s wisdom and experience sits lightly,
as does his age, on his broad shoulders. A public school
student from Lawrence School in Shimla and graduate
from Govt. Agricultural College Ludhiana 1958, Gurdip
Singh was born in 1936 in the undivided subcontinent.
Having lost land and livelihood during Partition and with
the Green Revolution still to materialise started a poultry
farm to augment income for his family.

He was chosen as Indian partner for Pioneer Hi-Bred
Corn Company USA who were the leaders in corn &
sorghum and owners of Hy-Line layers & India Rivers
broilers companies in 1964 after which there was no
looking back.

Hi-Bred India evolved a strategy to become a national
player during the days when there were no incubator
manufacturers, no cardboard box makers, no chick
sensors, no airlines to carry more than 2 boxes i.e. 200
chicks, no publicity or awareness of eggs as nutritious
food.

He established a network of 18 Associate Hatcheries one
in every State (there were only 18 States in the country)
to whom parent stock was leased and who in turn
produced and marketed commercial chicks in the
respective areas assigned to them. In this way Hy-Line
soon had 70% of the all India market share.

A well-travelled personality Sardar Gurdip Singh was one
of the first to promote and market eggs through mass
media, was nominated as Member of the All India
Poultry Advisory Council setup by Ministry of Food &
Agriculture, Govt. of India and set up set up two stations
in Karnal & Hyderabad for Pioneer Corn & Pioneer
Sorghum seed breeding where for two consecutive years
both Pioneer Corn and Pioneer Sorghum varieties
produced by Hi-Bred India out-yielded the best IARI
varieties by over 30%.

Gurdip Singh was also responsible for bringing in
Babolna Tetra Brown grand parent stock and was
actively associated with the formation of
Poultry Federation of India and continues to be a life
time Honorary Member.
