The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment, abbreviated as CEFR, is a guideline used to describe achievements of learners of foreign languages across Europe and, increasingly, in other countries (for example, Colombia and the Philippines). It was put together by the Council of Europe as the main part of the project "Language Learning for European Citizenship" between 1989 and 1996. Its main aim is to provide a method of learning, teaching and assessing which applies to all languages in Europe.

Every Wednesday at 19:00 p.m. GMT, a great number of ELT teachers from all over the world log into their Twitter account and for one hour they hold an online discussion (chat) on a topic they have selected.
#ELTchat is a hashtag which appears on all tweets in this online conversation, it’s searchable and anyone who ‘searches’ for it and uses it can converse with any other Twitter user following the same hashtag. It’s followed by hundreds of ELT teachers every week.
This short presentation will look at how hashtagged discussions such as #ELTchat can
- create a feeling of community online amongst ELT professionals
- disseminate information, publications and research which would otherwise remain obscure to the average teacher
- engage and inspire teachers by sharing materials and links
- encourage teachers to keep abreast of new publications and new technologies
- help teachers maintain their interest in their profession
- provide support and create important relationships and connections
The result of this is an expanded and strong Personal Learning Network (PLN) which can help teachers personally and professionally and keep them motivated and connected by maintaining their relationship with an ever expanding PLN through other Social Networks such as

Modelling openness: Developing the Digital Fluency course at OUTBrenda Mallinson
It is recognised that more than ‘literacy’ is needed in today’s academic environment in order to take full advantage of the affordances of using ICTs for the full range of teaching and learning, research, and administrative duties and blended modes of provision.
In order to address this issue, OUT, in collaboration with Saide’s OER Africa initiative, has conceptualised a course on ‘Digital Fluency’ to be provided as an Open Educational Resource (OER) and made available for ODeL provision.
The move from literacy to fluency encompasses effective and ethical online communication, critical interpretation, quality resource creation and curation, knowledge co-construction, and an understanding of using all of these abilities to open up education – with all of these becoming increasingly standard and effortless over time.

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) can connect with language teaching to make language learning more open, more enjoyable, and – some claim – more effective. Yet language teachers interested in integrating ICT (more) into their teaching activities face many challenges, which could be met with the help of adequate and flexible professional development. Drawing on recent research carried out by the AILA Research Network TPLang21 and by the speaker, this talk will provide an insightful picture of global language teachers‘ professional development activities. The final part of this talk addresses the ways in which the ICT-REV project at the European Centre of Modern Languages has sought to support language teachers in their individual and networked ICT-related professional development.

Erna Kotkamp, Senior Project Manager, laat tijdens deze interactieve presentatie zien hoe de TU Delft het aanbestedingstraject voor een nieuwe digitale leeromgeving heeft vormgegeven. Naast technische veranderingen, was ook het doel de kwaliteit van het onderwijs te verbeteren. Deze sessie gaat in op de praktijk van de best-value-tender, waarbij de focus lag op het vinden van een partner die de langetermijnonderwijsdoelstellingen van de TU Delft onderschrijft, die daarin mee wil denken en groeien. Leverancier D2L met het platform Brightspace paste het best bij de eisen en wensen van de TU Delft.
Ook aan de orde komen de organisatie- en supportstructuren die ervoor zorgen dat docenten, faculteitsmedewerkers en studenten bijdragen aan deze verandering. Een verandering met als doel op de lange termijn innovatief onderwijs te kunnen waarborgen met een stabiele basis. Denk hierbij aan aan flexibiliteit, mobile-friendly design of een responsief interface, maar ook aan pedagogische concepten zoals gepersonaliseerd, adaptief en interactief leren.

This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable.
