Common misconceptions about the (immediate) future of
learning and teaching in Higher Education:
• No-one uses books anymore.
• All students have their own computers.
• Digital technologies damage literacy.
• Students don’t need lecturers.
• On-line learning will replace face-to-face learning.
• Libraries are a thing of the past.
4. Ful soð he sæde, ac he nyste, ne ic

However:
• Digital information has had a profound influence
on learning styles.
• There is a focus on ‘innovation in teaching’.
• We do have concerns about student
engagement.
• The curriculum becomes ever-more crowded.
5. Ða ungelæredan preostas, gif

• Collaboration is the key to development.
• There is no ‘one size fits all’ solution.
• Lines between ‘academic’ and ‘professional
services’ need to be (even more) blurred.
• ‘Learning environment’ – not ‘lecture theatre’,
‘seminar room’ and ‘library’.
• Seamless engagement and support.
6. Sharing a language …
And specyally he axyed after eggys. And the

9. Students Libraries at the heart
of the system …
• A physical – and digital – focal point.
• Particular focus for personal support and
guidance.
• Integrated with teaching.
• Digital innovators - supporting staff as well as
students.
• Setting and promoting standards of excellence.
10. Com on wanre niht

• Understand ‘direction of travel’.
• Collaborate – don’t compete.
• Co-ordinate the message.
• Support mutual delivery.
• Balance need with resource constraint.
• Students don’t care who delivers ‘the
service’.
• Be welcoming – be excellent.
