The goal of TSE framework is to minimize all sources of bias and variance through optimal survey design, implementation, data collection, processing, analysis and modelling. However, minimizing all errors fully is impossible due to budget constraints, so trade-offs must be made to focus on reducing the most influential errors. Continuous quality improvement efforts such as redesigns, nonresponse reduction, quality monitoring and data quality indicators can help gradually reduce biases and unwanted variations in survey estimates over time.

On 26 May 2021 Dr Marlene Mengoni was one of two speakers at an event exploring barriers to open research.
Dr Marlene Mengoni is a member of the Institute of Medical & Biological Engineering (IMBE) at the University of Leeds and is interested in theoretical aspects of musculoskeletal tissues biomechanics with a fundamental computational engineering approach.
Speaking from an engineering perspective, Dr Mengoni discussed how the research culture at the University of Leeds can help to foster open research practices, throughout the research cycle, including embedding "open" in research and training.

This document provides an overview of PredictED, a pilot learning analytics project at an unnamed university. The project used data from the university's virtual learning environment (VLE) to provide weekly feedback emails to 1,184 opted-in students across 17 first-year modules. The emails aimed to encourage students to engage more with course content online. Most students (76%) and lecturers opted into the program. Academic performance was higher on average for participants compared to non-participants in 8 of 10 analyzed modules. Students reported studying and engaging more with the VLE due to the feedback. The document also briefly discusses the types of student data that could potentially be used for predictive analytics and the importance of students' academic networks.

Between January and June 2018, the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences in the UK ran a six-month programme on uncertainty quantification. The aim of the programme was to bring together the applied mathematics/numerical analysis and the statistical communities, who have different approaches to the problem on quantifying uncertainty in complex numerical models. Despite joint initiatives from groups such as SIAM and the ASA on journals and conferences the two communities remain separate and there was little understanding from one group on what the other does. The programme was organised by Peter Challenor (University of Exeter), Max Gunzberger (Florida State University), Catherine Powell (University of Manchester) and Henry Wynn (London School of Economics). Our core themes were: surrogate models; multilevel, multi-scale, and multi-fidelity methods; dimension reduction methods; inverse UQ methods; and careful and fair comparisons. INI programme participants attend the programme for up six months and have opportunities to work together in a collaborative way. Most of our participants attended for between 2-4 weeks. In addition to the participants we had a number of workshops. Four one week workshops on: key UQ methodologies and motivating applications (an introductory workshop to give introductions to UQ methodologies from both traditions);, surrogate models for UQ in complex systems; reducing dimensions and cost for UQ in complex systems; and UQ for inverse problems in complex systems; and two one day workshops aimed at industry and other stakeholders. Most of the talks from the workshops are available on line. I will outline what happened during the programme and give my personal views on the achievements of the programme and what is still left to do.Recommended

This document outlines a student network analysis project that aimed to: 1) identify relationships between student collaboration outside class and academic performance; 2) understand diversity among student networks; and 3) identify effective informal learning facilities. The research used social network analysis techniques like one-minute surveys (32% response), matrix creation in UCINET & NETDRAW, and centrality analysis. Findings included: no linkage between student centrality and performance; subgroups connected through key actors; and student preference for cafes and libraries for informal work. Recommendations included addressing the low response rate and using qualitative research to better understand student networks and experiences.

It outlines eLife's motivations to serve science through a swift, fair review process and exploiting digital media. Current metrics like the Journal Impact Factor are journal-based, proprietary and incomplete. DORA recommends evaluating research based on its own merits using multiple indicators rather than journal names. Usability of Online Instruction
The purpose of this research proposal is to identify organizational principles for the development of online learning curriculum in higher education. This study will address the following research questions: Can educational psychology learning theories (such as cognitive load theory) be used to inform usability-testing methods? Can usability-testing methods be used to discover basic principles of online learning curricular organization? Are there basic principles of online learning curricular organization that can improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and user satisfaction of learning in online environments? While there are many theoretical directions one could take to examine the interface of instructional design and technology, this research proposal will use the lens of the cognitive load theory. This study will use the cognitive walkthrough method as established by usability testing standards. Cognitive walkthroughs use an explicitly detailed procedure to simulate a user’s problem solving process at each step through the dialogue, checking if the simulated user’s goals and memory content can be assumed to lead to the next correct action. Participants will be asked to complete a series of tasks in an online learning environment formulated to compare different methods of organization. This study has the potential to make significant contributions to the field of educational psychology and online education by providing substantive empirical data that sheds light on potential principles that improve the effectiveness, efficiency, and user satisfaction of Web-based education.

However, a challenge of these methods is that they are designed for adults and are not necessarily appropriate to investigations including children. The guiding questions for this systematic literature review are (1) the motivation for conducting usability tests with children, and (2) the kind of methodological, practical, and ethical considerations that should be considered when involving children in usability studies. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) checklist and PRISMA flow diagram are applied in order to assure the quality of the process of this investigation. Nine articles are analyzed and then synthesized by applying the constant comparative method. The synthesis of the literature review is based on the identified thematic priorities, which are categorized as follows: 1) the motivation for involving children as test persons in design processes, 2) definitions of usability, 3) practical considerations, 4) methodological considerations, and 5) ethical considerations.

Evaluation study[1]
This study examined the current practices, needs, and preferences of institutions in Pakistan regarding electronic assessment methods. The researcher conducted surveys between October 2006 and March 2007 using three questionnaires targeted at institutional staff, faculty, and students. The surveys aimed to identify current e-assessment activities and discuss implications regarding identified issues. The study concluded that while e-assessment allows testing to be done anytime and anywhere, widespread implementation in Pakistan faces challenges of reliable technology infrastructure and supporting unreliable power and network systems across testing centers.
Tracking Use of Campaign Evaluation Findings of Two International Organisations
1. An evaluation was conducted of two international organizations' communication campaigns from 2009-2010.
2. Four years later, the evaluator interviewed campaign staff to study how the evaluation findings had been used.
3. The evaluator found that use of the findings was mostly non-linear and unanticipated, influenced strongly by internal factors like staff and resources, and that use occurred opportunistically in response to various influences rather than in a planned, linear fashion.

Multiple Response Questions - Allowing for chance in authentic assessments
This document discusses multiple response questions (MRQs), which allow multiple correct answers from a list of options. The authors reviewed over 600 MRQs and found that most had moderate chance factors between 0.4-0.5, indicating a significant element of chance. Many MRQs had higher chance factors than true/false questions. Tests using MRQs also tended to have moderate chance factors above 0.3. The heavy weighting given to each MRQ response increased test chance factors in some cases. The authors recommend developing statistical methods to account for chance in MRQs and other computer-based assessments.

This talk outlines Phil's research so far in his master's thesis on the topic of test automation in data and analytics projects. He presents seven key challenges revealed in academic studies, and the next steps in the research process.

Evaluation study[1]
This study examined the current practices, needs, and preferences of institutions in Pakistan regarding electronic assessment methods. The researcher conducted surveys between October 2006 and March 2007 using three questionnaires targeted at institutional staff, faculty, and students. The surveys aimed to identify current e-assessment activities and discuss implications regarding identified issues. The study concluded that while e-assessment allows testing to be done anytime and anywhere, widespread implementation in Pakistan faces challenges of reliable technology infrastructure and supporting unreliable power and network systems across testing centers.
Tracking Use of Campaign Evaluation Findings of Two International Organisations
1. An evaluation was conducted of two international organizations' communication campaigns from 2009-2010.
2. Four years later, the evaluator interviewed campaign staff to study how the evaluation findings had been used.
3. The evaluator found that use of the findings was mostly non-linear and unanticipated, influenced strongly by internal factors like staff and resources, and that use occurred opportunistically in response to various influences rather than in a planned, linear fashion.

Multiple Response Questions - Allowing for chance in authentic assessments
This document discusses multiple response questions (MRQs), which allow multiple correct answers from a list of options. The authors reviewed over 600 MRQs and found that most had moderate chance factors between 0.4-0.5, indicating a significant element of chance. Many MRQs had higher chance factors than true/false questions. Tests using MRQs also tended to have moderate chance factors above 0.3. The heavy weighting given to each MRQ response increased test chance factors in some cases. The authors recommend developing statistical methods to account for chance in MRQs and other computer-based assessments.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
