The lower the student #, the lower the guess. The higher the student #, the higher the guess. They got /anchored/ towards their initial number!

Comment by Eric Kennedy: Yes, these are good: early reactions to the pandemic will shape later ones... although this is also an example of priming.
If you wanted an example that's specific to anchoring, think about the magic "2 meter" number for physical distancing in lines. That number being introduced so early has powerfully affected what we see as "reasonable" physical distancing amounts... if it had started at 5m, we would be in a very different world of assumptions!
-This could also have been observed in how different countries proceeded with closures and containment during the pandemic.

Cognitive Biases and Effects You Should Know AboutKevlin Henney

In software development, developers, architects and managers often like to think of themselves as rational and clear thinking, not prone to the chaotic and contradictory thinking they see at home, in politics or in the world of business. Although it is possible to get further from the truth than this, it is not likely.
Those involved in software development are just as human as people in other walks of life, and are just as subject to the cognitive biases and effects that skew, truncate and bypass clear thinking. The effects on rationality affect everything from testing to estimation, from programming to project delivery. It is easier to see and react to these effects in yourself and others when you know what some of them are.

Colossal Corporation maintains a subsidiary in Serafini, a small country in Eastern Europe. This subsidiary is incorporated in the state of Delaware as New Brand Design, Inc. (NBD), a company that designs, brands, and manufactures innovative electronic products, and markets and distributes them for resale across the globe. NBD has been admitted to conduct business in Serafini.
NBD has been manufacturing and distributing a laptop computer with 360-degree technology. The thin tablet can easily convert into a laptop by flipping the screen over and locking it in place against the back of the keyboard. The laptop, marketed under the name Dualplex 360 is very popular and is distributed primarily in Western Europe, North America, and South Africa.
The Dualplex 360 went on the market six months ago, and the product is selling out in the United States and Europe. Unfortunately, consumers have reported that some laptops that were shipped to the United States have overheated and ignited when they have remained plugged into a power source for too long. In a few cases, the laptops have burned users and damaged property.
NBD’s research and development team was fully aware of the overheating problem when putting the Dualplex 360 on the market but performed a cost-benefit analysis and determined that the payouts from lawsuits would be less than the cost of redesigning and manufacturing a new laptop. The research and development team covered up the defect but included the following disclaimer in the instruction manual:
DO NOT LEAVE THE DUALPLEX 360 PLUGGED IN TO A POWER SOURCE AFTER THE BATTERY IS FULLY CHARGED. SELLER EXPLICITLY DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES. SELLER MAKES NO WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR USE. NOR IS THERE ANY OTHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED WARRANTY.
The instruction manual contained no other warnings regarding the possibility of overheating or danger. To date, all instances of overheating have resulted from consumers ignoring the warning and leaving their computers plugged in after the battery is fully charged, although some claim they never read the instruction manual so did not see the warning.
The executive board of NBD has reached out to the CEO of Colossal to discuss these issues and the potential that NBD will be held liable for the overheating laptops and resulting injuries and damage to property. The CEO informed the board that the company’s international task force will research and address these concerns.

The ethos of "makers"—how making things and simply being creative for the sake of creativity can be a bad thing, if we're not willing to be responsible for our legacy and pretend that “design isn’t political.” This session will consider case studies of companies and products that are making our lives and our society worse—sometimes unintentionally. We'll talk about dark patterns and how they could cost millions of dollars—and, sometimes, human lives. There are three areas of transformation where we as an industry can get better:
Self-identity: Transform our beliefs to shift from pure craftsmanship to becoming the makers of social good, evolve our definition of success from “moving fast and breaking things” into the sustainability and health of our society.
Connection: Engage with as many people as possible in our companies (beyond just tech), overcome our biases through diversity and inclusion, and share beliefs and values that empower our partners and us to care about people, together.
Future-proofing: Ask questions to one another to collectively identify the emerging risk zones for our products and services using a variety of tools, including EthicalOS, moral value maps, “worst-case scenario” workshops and more.

Production of Disposable Surgical and Medical Face Masks
The process that needs better explanation and instruction
Surgical and medical face masks are worn by healthcare personnel and professionals when attending to patients with either bacterial or viral infections to avoid contact that may lead to them being infected. In times of an outbreak of a highly infectious viral and bacterial disease like Covid-19, health practitioners and even the public might require to wear medical face masks to prevent the spread of the virus or bacteria (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2019). However, the process of producing the masks is not clear, and that explains the reason surgical and medical face masks are only limited to use by health professionals. The medical masks are highly effective in preventing the spread of viral diseases, and in case of an outbreak, the public should have adequate access to these masks. The process of how they are made needs a clear explanation so that cloth manufacturers and tailors can embark on mass production when necessary.
Impact of the process on manufacturers of face masks
Manufacturers of medical face masks are limited in number. The reason is due to the lack of an elaborate procedure on how to manufacture masks that meet the required standards. Many of them know how to make cloth face masks but which are not effective in controlling the spread of viruses and bacteria like the surgical masks. Outlining a manual for making surgical masks will help manufacturers and tailors to embark on mass production of the same. Such an act will reduce the shortage of surgical face masks and make them available not only to the medical personnel but also to the public.
The research to be conducted
The student should embark on a study to understand how surgical face masks are made. What special features do they possess compared to cloth, non-medical face masks? The student should clearly outline the process involved, the materials required, the average duration taken to produce a single piece, as well as any other relevant resources for the procedure. It should be precise and elaborate such that any interested manufacturer can embark on the production of the masks without struggling on the process.
Existing documentation and information about the process
Much of the available information on how to manufacture masks focuses on non-surgical cloth masks. However, despite cloth masks and surgical masks being closely related, the procedure for making medical masks is more complicated than cloth masks. That is because surgical masks are more efficient in disease protection than cloth masks. Making cloth mas ...

"Security on the Brain" Security & Risk Psychology Workshop Nov 2013Adrian Wright
Security on the Brain – Using Human Psychology to Achieve Compliance: ISSA-UK Expert Workshop
Presented by Adrian Wright - ISSA-UK VP of Research
One of the biggest wake-up calls in recent times is the realisation that more than 60% of major security breaches and data losses are down to 'human factor' failings.
Our main weapon in mitigating these failings is to spend more on in-house awareness campaigns and on technical measures to minimise any losses - yet incidents and losses continue to increase. Clearly these existing awareness campaigns and controls are not enough, as the message is still not getting through or isn't being complied with.
This presentation and workshop session challenges current thinking and strategies in dealing with people as both an asset and a source of risk, by leveraging human psychology and people's differing motivations to improve communication, change opinions and turn basic awareness into actual compliance.
In this session
Learn:
- The psychology of why we don't comply - why awareness alone won't do
- What motivates people to do - or not do - specific things
- Neurolinguistics - it's not just what you say; but how you say it and to who
- Divide and conquer - adapting your message to target specific personality types
- Changing the security culture by changing people's belief systems
- Dirty tricks (slightly) - tactics that work in changing behaviour
- Selling the unsellable - lessons from other sectors in making boring stuff sexy
Participate:
- Informal group discussion of challenges and successes from your experience
- Identifying your audience’s character types and shaping the message
- Influencing the Board by speaking their language
- Developing an internal PR strategy to improve security's image and influence
- Develop a brand new and more effective mission statement for your team

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
