The Resolution Of The Hostages On The Basis Of...
Initially, the President s response was to appeal for the release of the hostages on the basis of
humanitarian grounds, but this was ineffective against the Muslim Student Followers of the Imam s
Line because their main goal was to bring the Shah and the United States to justice, and taking
hostages was just a means to do so. Since there were so many hostages taken, the United States had to
tread carefully with their diplomacy. They were the ones against odds with everything to lose. The
United States should have given an ultimatum earlier on in the hostage crisis, when the motives and
end goals of the Muslim Students were not fully determined (Harris, 54). The hostage crisis also
paved the way for an increase of political power among Muslim extremist groups such as the Irainian
Mujahedin; which would then split into two groups known today as Al Qaeda and ISIS (Cold War
Museum). Many of theses extremist groups saw the hostage crisis as a war to end American
imperialism. The Muslim Students that took hostages decided early on that their quarrel was with
American diplomats, so the militants released thirteen women and African Americans just weeks into
the hostage crisis. And finally, one hostage, Richard Queen, was released during July of 1980 when he
was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Contrary to common belief, the hostages were actually moved
from the embassy to prisons in Tehran by August of 1980 (Baqr, 97). President Jimmy Carter was in
the midst of his first term,

Intertextual Analysis of Works of Art
Postmodern art is the representation of the return to pre modern art styles and genres, and there is no
longer a division between art, popular culture, and media. This philosophical term challenged and
reacted against what modernism had to say, echoing dramatic changes in our social and economic
features. Furthermore postmodern essays and critiques coincided with the arrival of contemporary art.
Contemporary art is more socially conscious and philosophically all encompassing of several styles
and medias than art works previous to this era. Contemporary art is experimental and often includes
crossbreeds of styles, as well as mixes of many varied periods of art history from earlier times to the
present times. Contemporary art cultivates ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since Jansen s painting is inspired by his own unique interpretation of the world and how past, present
and future intertwine we are lead into the Psychoanalytical theory of art. I feel this theory fits best
with Jansen s painting Surreal . The psychoanalytical theory is about bringing what is in the
unconscious out from it hiding place, because our dreams, wishes, and human nature are what makes
artwork. According to Sigmund Freud past, present and future are threaded, as it were, on the string of
the wish that runs through them all (p.109). He means that some event in the present employs a plan to
a future on the pattern of the past. Like dreams though, works of art embody all three modes of time in
a unique synthesis. Jansen s art employs all three past present and future. He shows us the present with
the urban cityscape that has an apocalyptic foreboding feel to it that the future could be. And the past
is brought in with Jansen s own background and how history repeats it self in that the future could be
like the past economic depression. The intact potential available to the artist allows one to instantly tap
into the subconscious when making the art, demonstrating that it can be incredibly satisfying and
illuminating. The Expressionist theory of art is that the relationship between the artists, the work of
art, and the

Killing For Companionship Summary
The selections When killing is thrilling (Fox Levin, Chapter 4) and Killing for companionship (Fox
Levin, Chapter 7) represent the factors that cause individuals to commit crime. They analyze the
different emotions and sensations serial killers experience when they commit crime such as pleasure
and happiness. While some individuals commit crime to experience joy and excitement, others
commit crime for companionship. The section When killing is thrilling (Fox Levin, Chapter 4) focuses
on the excitement and pleasure serial killers experience when they commit gruesome acts. The section
Killing for companionship (Fox Levin, Chapter 7) analyzes how serial killers who lack social bonds

The section Killing for companionship (Fox Levin, Chapter 7) focuses on individuals who commit
crime to fill their feelings of loneliness and lack of support from others. This section also describes
how some serial killers use dead bodies as if they were alive to eat with them and have a conversation.
These individuals may suffer from schizophrenia and hear the voices of their dead victims speaking to
them. Research studies find that schizophrenic individuals are more violent and aggressive than the
rest of the population. The section Killing for companionship (Fox Levin, Chapter 7) fits the
schizophrenia disorder because serial killers described in this section were more likely to experience
hallucination and delusions and acted on them due to anger and absence of having social support. Due
to the lack of support, serial killers who feel abandoned or fail to have bonds with others may engage
in conversations and activities with dead bodies to fill the void of being

Metastasis Term Paper
Metastasis is a hallmark of caner and leading to reduced survival rates of cancer patients. The ability
of a cancer cell to undergo migration and invasion allows it to change position within the tissues.
Metastasis consists of five steps which are termed the metastatic cascade (Fig. 1). These five steps of
cascade are invasion and migration, intravastion, circulation, extravasation, Colonization, proliferation
and angiogenesis. Various cellular processes like de regulated cell growth, loss of cell cell adhesion,
migration through the underlying interstitial stroma, altered survival signaling which support
metastatic spread, therapy resistance and unrestricted tumor growth, facilitate these five step of
metastatic cascade. Massive metastatic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The factors limiting the growth of malignant neoplasm include the basal membrane and various
components of the surrounding stroma, increased interstitial pressure, limited oxygen supply to tumor
cells and the formation of active oxygen forms, hypoxia conditions, and permanent exposure to
immune system cells. Given the intra tumoral heterogeneity, in the struggle for survival, some tumor
cells may be subjected to regression and death, while other cells, which resist powerful, counteracting
micro environmental factors, gain an aggressive phenotype and the ability of metastatic progression.
Invasive tumor growth is enabled by the detachment of malignant cells from the tumor mass due to a
reduction in or complete loss of intercellular adhesion molecules, and, therefore, the cells gain the
ability of anomalously high motility enabling penetration through the stiff structural elements of the
surrouss means the ability to thrust aside adjacent tissues, and also to actively invade and, therefore,

Ancient Greece s Influence On Modern Day Fashion
Ancient Greece is not just ancient history, there is a relation between ancient Greece to modern day in
several different ways. Few relations are seen in fashion, architecture, and sculpting. To see ancient
Greece still have a relation in the 21st century is remarkable. The hallmark of ancient Greek fashion
was elaborate draping, not much detail and can also see images of Greek styles painted on pottery.
You see in today s clothing the white one shoulder dress for women which is considered a formal
dress, people relate it to the Greek Goddess dress . It flows over on one side, with usually a gold
accent belt to go along with the dress. In addition, there are sandals that have been in fashion for few
years now, called gladiators . The strapped ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The use of their patterns in pottery, architecture, and furniture, introduced how to decorate anything in
modern day. From paintings, to interior decorating, you see the use of ancient Greek patterns in the
industry. For sculpting, ancient Greece influenced sculpting today by introducing detail to sculpting.
They used marble, stone, limestone, and clay to create their sculptures. That has helped us create the
base of the materials we use today for sculpting and even with architecture. In modern day
architecture, we have almost simplified the way buildings look. Fourunately, ancient Greece
architectural influence is still seen mostly at formal banquet halls today. The columns in entry ways,
usually the capital is either doric or ionic. The interior well detailed with the use of marble as flooring,
and patterns is still seen in modern day architecture. Over all, ancient Greece s influence is easily
spotted today in interior decorating with the furniture and art work. The fashion will continue to bring
the patterns and styles, and will continue to relate it to ancient Greece since it has been for several

Mise-En-Scne Challenges Linear Temporality
Mise En Scène Challenges Linear Temporality Alfred Hitchcock s Rope (1948) creates suspense
through the dramatic irony of a dinner party where the missing guest s dead body is hidden in the very
chest off of which the guests dine. Brandon (John Dall) and Phillip s (Farley Granger) Nietzschean
ideals are not fully revealed to the audience until the introduction of critical supporting character
Rupert Cadell (James Stewart). An impeccably dressed, suave, intellectual man, Rupert reveals critical
information about the men which eventually spoils Brandon s plan. The expository characterization of
Rupert through performance and costume elements of mise en scène adds important background
information about Brandon and Phillip and challenges them intellectually, thus creating tension around
the linear temporality of Brandon s plan and the plot. Through Stewart s performance, Rupert acts in
ways to indicate a familiarity with Brandon and Phillip which contrasts the forward movement of the
rest of the plot. The film closely follows linear temporality, or a plot which follows chronological
time, through a logical succession of calculated events designed by Brandon to torment his guests.
Rupert challenges, and ultimately foils, this neat progression by interjecting information about the
men s past. Rupert s regressive comments are presented as the audience first meets him through
calling out improvements in Phillip s piano playing. Stewart s performance paints Rupert as an elite
intellectual whom Brandon idolizes. Brandon regresses in his presence, stumbling over his words and
nervously repeating himself, which Rupert likens to his past by saying, You always did stutter when
you were excited. His naming of Brandon and Phillip s faults emphasizes his familiarity with them as
younger men, thus further contrasting the linearity of the story with constant nostalgia. Hitchcock s
manipulation of linear temporality exaggerates a long term cause and effect relationship that would
not be apparent to viewers without Rupert s character spotlighting the past. Viewers learn that Rupert
is the source of Brandon s Nietzschean ideas, and Rupert is forced to come to terms with the terrible
resulting effects of exposing young people to

Movie Review of On the Waterfront
Reaction: On the Waterfront (1956) Even before I saw Eli Kazan s On the Waterfront, I was familiar
with the line of Marlon Brando s: I could have been a contender. I knew, even before watching the
film, that Brando played an ex boxer with broken dreams. I also knew that the film had been made
during the McCarthy era, around the time of the red scare. In the film, Brando s character Terry
Malloy witnesses a murder, and is encouraged to turn in the perpetrators, even though his union bosses
are involved. The film portrays the dockworker Malloy s decision to come forward as a heroic one,
partially rooted in his love for the dead man s sister Edie. (Edie s brother was killed for the same
reason as Terry is being persecuted he informed on the union bosses). Knowing the back story of the
film, I felt somewhat uncomfortable rooting for Brando to turn in his bosses, given that the film could
be read as a defense of turning in people during the McCarthy era. The film portrays unions as made
up of villains. Malloy is one of them a union member until he becomes so tormented by his conscience
he cannot help but come forward. He cannot live with himself unless he speaks. Eventually, because
of the public courage of his convictions, the other longshoremen side with Terry. The film is powerful
as a story in and of itself, regardless of what the director intended it to symbolize. It can be read as an
indictment of corruption and concealment in all industries, as members

Deception In Memoirs Of A Geisha By Arthur Golden
Thesis:
In the novel, Memoirs of a Geisha, by Arthur Golden the theme of deception is prominent. Through
the deception experienced by Sayuri, golden teaches his readers that deception can hurt but it can lead
to something better.
Methods of development:
Deception from Mr. Tanaka
I couldn t stop thinking about Mr.Tanaka. He had taken me away from my mother and father, sold me
into slavery, sold my sister into something even worse. I had taken him as a kind man. I thought he
was so refined, so worldly. What a stupid child I had been. I would never go back to Yoroido, I
decided. Or if I did , it would only be to tell Mr. Tanaka how much I hated him. (Golden pg.82)
But the truth is that the afternoon when I met Mr. Tanaka Ichiro really was the best and worst of my
life. (Golden pg.7)
Sayuri admired Mr. Tanaka and wanted to become his adopted daughter, after being taken away from
her home she was extremely hurt and felt stupid for believing in him.
She felt as though her life would never be the same again, and even tried to run away risking her
chances of becoming a Geisha.
Sayuri eventually benefited from this as she herself noticed that living in Gion allowed her to become
much more successful allowing her to take care of herself. She recognized that if she had remained in
Yoroido she would have never been able to achieve success and that she would still be living in her
little tipsy house with little to support herself.
Coming to Gion is also the reason she meet the

The Multinational Corporation Boom And Its Reasons
In this paper the multinational corporation boom and its reasons are investigated and then the
challenges which these corporations encounter will be discussed.
There are certain reasons associated with the rapid growth of multinational corporations during the
last 50 years. Including but not limited to globalization, information technology telecommunication,
deregulations and worldwide market liberalization and the operation in the emerging economies and
the growth opportunity in these countries.
Globalization)
Globalization is the process of international integration caused by the exchange of products, ideas and
other aspects of the culture in a global scale. Scholars still disagree whether the globalization caused
the inception of multinational corporations or vice versa. Although globalization is the phenomena
which belongs to the modern era, the earliest samples of multinational corporations could be traced
back to 17th century Dutch and English India companies. Therefore it is generally believed that
multinational corporations are both a cause and a result of the globalization process. The globalization
has manifested itself in the interdependence of national economies and financial markets. There are
different dimensions for the growth of multinational corporations in globalization era. The economic
dimension of the multinational corporation growth can be presented through the numbers; including
the fact that approximately 33% of the world trade consists of

Kant And Kant s View On Life And Most
If you do what you need ,your surviving. If you do what you want, your living . Philosophers Mill and
Kant both share similarities and differences on their view on life and most of all on the meaning of a
good life. Mill bases morality on the principle of utility which states , that actions or behaviors are
right in so far as they promote happiness or pleasure , wrong as they tend to produce unhappiness or
pain . While Kant bases morality on the categorical imperative which is, an unconditional moral
obligation that is blinding in all circumstances and is not dependent on a person s inclination or
purpose . Mill and Kant both join in their proposed first rule of profound quality a sort of all
inclusiveness, for Kant s situation that of confining one s standards of activity to people who it can
serve to be a widespread law of nature, for Mill s situation considering the outcomes of a sort of
activity for all people. Both perceive transitional good guidelines , called by Kant obligations and by
Mill subordinate standards . Accordingly the 2 philosophers have a 2 step origination of moral
thought. A basic level that offered moderate good standards against the first guideline of profound
quality and a performance stage that allows for settles on a choice in a specific case on the premise of

The Rise of Anti-semitic Views Under the Nazis Essay
The rise of anti semitic views under the nazis made survival challenging for the jews of Europe. Life
is Beautiful directed by Roberto Benigni and Maus by Art Spiegelman present the Holocaust in
different ways. Life is Beautiful uses comedy to show Guido s effort to keep his son alive. While
Maus uses Vladek s application of industrial skills to keep his family alive. Both stories show the
peoples effort to survive at all costs using the skill set that they have. The two works about Holocaust
survival show that no matter the situation those affected will try to survive. While Maus is presented

The Ultimate goal of Valdek and Guido was for their families to survive. Both Life is Beautiful and
Maus show that the people with skills survived longer than those without skills. Before the war
Vladek previously ran a textile factory in Poland. When he arrived at Auschwitz he knew that to
survive he was going to have to acquire special skills. While Vladek was in Auschwitz he learned the
art of tin working and he used his previous knowledge of shoe repairing to get on the good side of the
Kapo s. Also Vladek knew english and taught a guard english so that he could help himself and to try
to move Anja from Birkenau to Auschwitz. In comparison Guido didn t befriend any guards but he
used his sense of humor to keep his son, Joshua alive. Upon arrival at the camp Guido explained to his
son that they were in a competition to 1000 points. He asked what the prize was and Guido said that
first prize was a huge tank. Later in the movie Joshua slipped up and said Graci which is Italian for
thank you during a german dinner party. Guido saved Joshua s life by acting like he was teaching all
the kids at the dinner Italian. Guido uses his playful actions to stay alive until the very end when he
goes out to try and save his wife. While he is out looking for his wife the guards capture him. Even
when he is captured he jokingly marches around because his son is watching. Guido ends up paying

The Despairing Act of Self Harm Essay
Have you ever, coincidentally, walked passed somebody with deep, open cuts on his/her wrist and
wondered what happened? Maybe, you thought it was a simple, harmless scratch caused by obnoxious
pets at home. Or maybe, you considered it as mild accidents, preferably caused by doing arts and
crafts at home or school. But, have you ever pondered thoroughly and have the idea that those sad
scarring were actually made by him/herself? Creating scars on your skin is actually the action of self
harm; the intentional hurting of one s self, direct to the body tissue, with or without the intention of
suicide. There are several types of self harm, such as hair pulling, banging body parts, scratching,
burning, ingestion of toxin, and the most frequent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Though, there are several motives of self harm, a person who self harms by any means seeks the same
personal effects: a sense of relief, a diversion from hurtful emotion by expressing it externally, or to
simply sense something when feeling numb and empty. Adolescents and teenagers expects self harm
as an escape, as a way out of struggles. However, self harm bears great consequences to those who
practice it. As a matter of fact, it has never been a solution to complications. The truth is, self harm
only gives temporary satisfaction, and provokes to further misery and discomfort. Self harm brings
several damages; it affects both one s mind and physical features. Damages of self harm involves:
Permanent, painful scars
Inability to bring an end to it or addiction
Feeling useless
Self hatred or low self esteem
Permanent numbness in hand or wrist
Broken bones and bruises
Stress to hide the self injury from others
Anxiety that someone will discover it
Secluded from society
Although there are a number of after effects, the worst that could happen to one s life is death. When a
person became too dependent on self harm, he/she could have the desire to take his/her own life.
Regardless its familiarity in the midst of teenagers today, God has always ruled against self harm.

Searle Vs Sartre
With philosophy, nothing is black and white. Deciphering philosophical views is unlike anything else
because there is more depth and analysis that has to be put into play. It is about understanding what
the philosopher is trying to get across while making inferences about what they truly mean or could
mean. The thing about it is that at some times it tends to be a contradiction within itself: while certain
things can be true under certain circumstances, the opposite could be true under different
circumstances. Many ideas are hard to grasp and can be interpreted in various ways depending on how
people want to take it. One can say that John Searle and Jean Paul Sartre have a plethora of beliefs in
common yet really none at all. If they were assessing each other s views, they would agree and

Man is born, and then he defines himself. I believe that Searle would disagree with this. He would say
that our brain and its predetermined functions play a large role in everyday decisions and life choices.
Searle almost likes to believe that human are machines in referring to their syntactical processes. It
seems to me that he thinks our brains are wired a certain way, and I do not thing Sartre could agree. In
one conclusion he drew, Searle wrote, What we mean by that is that mental processes that we consider
to constitute a mind are caused, entirely caused, by processes going on inside the brain. . . . Brains
cause minds (Searle 39). By this, I believe he means that brains and minds are part of a human s
essence, therefore, he would probably believe that essence precedes existence. When breaking it down
and looking at their perspectives this way, Sartre and Searle differ greatly. Searle most likely would
not agree with that main theme in Sartre s

Loss In Frankenstein Research Paper
The concept of loss is a natural part of human existence. It plagues humanity with its non prejudiced
hand. Cruel, it can be defined, but necessary nonetheless. How can one deal with such damaging
circumstances? Many seek respite from this inevitable evil through the raw expression of the human
soul onto paper, a novel. These thought invoking expressions have long demonstrated human kind s
ability, or lack there of, to deal with loss. From Edgar Allen Poe s The Raven, to Henry Wadsworth
Longfellow s The Cross of Snow, loss is a topic humans can relate to on the deepest level, as it is
something that we all must face. Frankenstein and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, two widely
celebrated novels, are both are influenced by the theme of loss ... Show more content on

To be an individual, there must be a unique sense of one s self to feel complete. Without this sense of
one s self, the mind takes a dangerous path and finds negative things to evoke the desired feeling of
completeness. When this sense of one s self is altered, it brings disdain and guilt to the individual.
This disdain and guilt are evinced in the Rime of the Ancient Mariner, as well as Frankenstein.
Frankenstein s monster (The Creature) was an intelligent being that could think on his own, and
developed feelings and thought processes. He happened upon a family in a cottage, and their kindness
and love toward one another created the yearning of this for himself. Because of the abnormality of
his appearance, he is rejected harshly by the cottagers, losing his sense of self from a person that
deserves love, to that to a wretch, doomed forever to suffer at the rejection of man kind. In the Rime
of the Ancient Mariner the loss of self identity is presented as the hanging of the albatross corpse
around the Ancient Mariner s neck, giving allusion to a cross to be carried, that represents the guilt of
his actions: Instead of the cross, the albatross/ About my neck was hung . (Coleridge) Instead of his
identity being an honorable mariner, sailing the world on his journey s, he is haunted by his one cruel

HR A conditioned stimulus in classical conditioning can be defined as a learned response in relation to
a previously neutral stimulus (Domjan, Grau, amp; Krause, 2010). It is a learned reflexive response
that is evoked when one is exposed to the same response (Schreurs, Smith Bell, amp; Burhans, 2011).
While there has been an increasing acute awareness in relation to the interactions of heart rate with
conditioned responses, can heart rates really be altered through

Elizabeth Cady Stanton s Declaration Of Sentiments And...
A Call to Women, a Call to All Elizabeth Cady Stanton fought tirelessly against inequality between
men and women, an issue that still plagues this nation. From her first address to her last, Elizabeth was
the voice of the women s rights movement. She lectured across the nation and publically debated the
unjust laws of her day ( Elizabeth Cady Stanton... ). Two of her more prominent and potent speeches
were Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions and Solitude of Self . These speeches served as her
introduction and adieu as an overt promoter of women s rights ( The Women s Rights... ) (Hogan).
Though Stanton gave both her Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions and Solitude of Self in
support of women s rights, due to the differing audiences addressed, the speeches vary in structure,
overall message, appeal, and use of rhetorical devices.
Stanton orates A Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions on July 19, 1848, at the Seneca Falls
convention, to a crowd consisting of mostly females. This marks the first gathering devoted to the
women s rights movement ( The Women s Rights... ). Stanton models her speech after the Declaration
of Independence (Appleby 74 77). She reflects the structure by beginning with a preamble followed
by a declaration of natural rights. She then lists man s grievances against women in the same fashion
that the nation s forefathers listed the king s mistreatments against the colonies. She concludes with
their, the women s rights movement s,

The Common Man and Colonial Elite in The American Revolution
The American Revolution was an uprising taking place in the late 1700s where the thirteen British
colonies rebelled and overthrew British authority to create the United States of America. The
American Revolution took place through the leadership of the colonial elite and founding fathers.
There are many interpretations of why the American Revolution took place including that of Howard
Zinn who thought the founding fathers/ colonial elite encouraged the colonists to revolt because they
wanted to take the place and power of the King/ Parliament rather than revolting because they
believed in the social revolution. Zinn s thesis is incorrect ;due to the systematic ... Show more content

The stamp act affected both the common man and colonial elite economically, leading to the union of
both classes in protest of the act. Very heavy taxes on all estates, real and personal; a poll tax; a tax on
all offices, professions, trades, and businesses, according to their profits; an excise on all wine ,rum,
and other spirit; and a duty of ten pounds per head on all Negroes imported, with some other duties in
order to support the civil and military establishments of the country, and to discharge the heavy debt
contracted in the last [Seven Years ] war , had been present in the colonies prior to the Stamp Act. The
Stamp Act was a law that required colonist to pay a tax on almost any printed paper including playing
card, pamphlets, and legal documents. When Benjamin Franklin, a member of the colonial elite, was
questioned about the colonists ability to pay these taxes, he answered no , and continued

The Jade Peony--Sek-Lung Is a Marginal Character Essay
Sek Lung is a Marginal Character
A strong, intelligent, independent boy is what every traditional Chinese family wants. Unfortunately,
Sek Lung is not such an ideal child. In the novel, The Jade Peony, Sek Lung is a marginal character.
He is rejected by the dominant group, first being made to feel insignificant and second to feel
uncomfortably visible. Sek Lung is born in Canada, with a sick body, being considered inferior and
unimportant. To begin with, he gains a reputation because of his brainlessness. Referring to his own
feeling, everyone knew [...] I was brainless (Choy 145). For example, I would say Third Uncle instead
of Great Uncle (Choy 145). That is because he is stuck between two cultures. In English, ... Show

First, he is insecure, and he is afraid that he will not get along with other students. When he first goes
to school, Jung s tough guy reputation protected I from the school bullies (Choy 174). A marginal
character is always unconfident. Because of his weakness, brainlessness and different cultural
background, he worries about getting into trouble. Second, Sek Lung, spending all his childhood with
Poh Poh, is the only person who sees her ghost. For example, after Poh Poh dies, every time the
windows mysteriously close or make noises, Sek Lung insists, It s Grandmama (Choy 181), [...] and
everyone [glares] at [him] (Choy 181). Poh Poh is his closest family member, and he cannot get over
her death. He believes that Poh Poh s soul will come back and protect him. However, in his family s
eyes, he is acting strange, and no one believes him. Besides, his family thinks he will shame their
name. For example, sister Liang refuses to take him out because people will see or hear him.
Similarly, Chinatown people turned away, muttering behind my back (Choy 178). He is not only
noticeable in his family, but also well known all over Chinatown. People think he may be crazy or he
really sees a ghost, which shows that he is unlucky, and either point of view will make him be rejected
by society, because no one likes abnormal persons at that period. To conclude, Sek Lung becomes
marginal by being treated as insignificant and distinctive.

Theme Of The Poem 1958 By Gwendolyn Mcewen
In the poem 1958, Gwendolyn MacEwen describes the high school environment as it would have been
in the late 1950 s. Popular fads among the teenagers during this era are explored in detail. The
prevailing theme throughout the text pertains to the idea of belonging. The poem focuses primarily on
the desire teenagers have to fit in. Throughout this response I will explore the ways in which this
poem differs and relates to the high school environment today. Secondly I will analyze the connections
between this poem and a modern day movie. Lastly, I will express the ways in which my personal
experiences relate to the central message in the poem. Several elements of the high school
environment during the late 1950 s still exist today. The author mentions that, those guys spoke in
crazy cryptic monosyllables . This statement is still relevant today; however teenage boys now speak
in a form of speech referred to as gangster slang . Typical words include sup or peace which are used
to express phrases such as how are you? or see you later. In the poem McEwen says that, those girls
said nothing and were mean and cracked gum . Mean girls still continue to grace the school hallways
glaring at those more vulnerable. These girls tend to be the masterminds behind vicious rumours that
spread like wildfire throughout the school. McEwen mentions that the boys learned shop and the girls
sewed shaky seams in the dresses they would never wear. This statement

Christmas Child Reflection
Operation Christmas Child has been a part of more than half of my life. I started volunteering when I
was eight at a family friend s church. However, the only reason I volunteered was because I needed
community service hours for school. I always secretly wished to be put in the packing group since it
had the least leadership role because I never wanted to be a leader. What I did not know at that time,
was those years before high school were preparing me for what God had in store for me. When I
started my freshman year in high school, I still had to do community service. This led me to continue
doing Operation Christmas Child. I was now volunteering at my school, Trinity Christian High School
along with my athletic director, Mr. Fitz, who was in charge of running it. Even though this was taking
place somewhere else, I expected that I would still be able to have a role not involving leadership.
This was not the case because Mr. Fitz had something else in store for me. He assigned to me the role
of the log sheets, which included talking to people, writing down the amount of boxes were dropped
off, and making sure the logs were neat and correct. I was very nervous to take on this role, so much
that I would start to shake causing me to get anxious and start sweating right before I would have to
talk to someone. There was a routine I went through every time. Hello, have you dropped boxes off
here before? I asked. Yes, I have a school teacher said. Great, what church or

High Fructose Corn Syrup Research Paper
High fructose corn syrup is a by product derived from corn and a sweetener used in a plethora of food
items, such as beverages and processed food. High fructose corn syrup differs than table sugar in
composition: high fructose corn syrup is made of either 55% of fructose and 45% glucose, or 58%
fructose and 42% glucose, while white table sugar is composed of 50% glucose and 50% fructose.
Although there is a small difference between the compositions, the body metabolizes high fructose
corn syrup differently than table sugar, which contributes to a myriad of health problems such as
obesity, liver scarring, and diabetes. Therefore, high fructose corn syrup is detrimental to our health
and can cause severe damage to our bodies.
Obesity is a highly prevalent condition in America, affecting approximately one third of the adult
American population. Obesity can be caused by a myriad of factors: genetics, ... Show more content

since they are similar in composition, they are metabolized the same (Klurfeld, 2013). However, as

Conformity And Expectation In Jane Austen s Northanger Abbey
In Jane Austen s novel Northanger Abbey, conformity is a very prominent recurring theme. The main
character Catherine Morland fails to conform to the clichés of a typical literary heroine and woman in
the aristocratic society. As a child she never enjoyed the more girly activities, she had no taste for a
garden, and if she gathered flowers at all, it was chiefly for the pleasure of mischief, (Austen 5). As a
young teenager she was quite foolish and awkward. The narrator stated at the beginning of the novel
No one who had ever seen Catherine Morland in her infancy, would have supposed her born to be a
heroine, (Austen 5). However, she was considered to be more moral and honest than the other
characters in the story, especially more than ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Isabella Thorpe, a friend of Catherine s during a large portion of the novel, believed that Catherine s
brother James Morland was extremely rich and greedily squeezed a marriage proposal out of him.
However, when Isabella realized he was not as well off as she assumed, she broke off the engagement
and started to flirt with Frederick Tilney, Henry s brother. Other women in that time period would do
that as well in order to marry rich, and Catherine thought that practice was revolting. Catherine was at
the age to be married, and John Thorpe clearly showed interest in her. However, she disliked him and
didn t succumb to the social customs and expectations that pressured her to marry him. By showing
her dislike for Thorpe, she was proving that she was able to think for herself and form her own
opinions. She did not allow herself to be manipulated by anyone, and an element of that shone through
when she said If I could not be persuaded into what I thought was wrong, I will never be tricked into it
(Austen 68). Although Catherine is quite young and naïve, she shows maturity in not letting herself be

In 2013, 12 Major League Baseball players each received fifty game suspensions without pay for
using performance enhancing drugs. Big names such as Ryan Braun and Alex Rodriguez were on this
list. Testosterone, an illegal substance, is what is found in the performance enhancing drugs.
Testosterone increases male characteristics such as body hair, aggression, deepening of the voice, and
of course massive muscle growth ( Steroids par. 1). Some professional athletes claim to use
performance enhancing drugs to recover more quickly from injury; others take them because they

Milwaukee, and many baseball fans from around the world that they had previously given him. Braun,
however, has reached out to many fans and has made many phone calls apologizing to them for his
actions. Braun knows that apologizing will not make up for his actions, however, he also knows that
he has to do the right thing by telling people that he has made a mistake. To make up from his actions,
he called many of the season ticket holders just to tell them he was sorry and that he made a big
mistake. Braun also lost a good friend in Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers wishes that Braun would not of
looked him in the face and lied to him (Vandermause par. 2). Rodgers was very disappointed not for
just himself, but for all of the Wisconsin sports fanatics out there (2). Braun claimed that they were

Armstrong denies his steroid use, but he has stopped fighting the United States Anti Doping Agency

Several existing path loss models exist as discussed above among other ones, but the best existing path
loss model with the closest propagation exponent [36], to the measured path loss data, will be chosen
as a reference for the development of the adapted path loss model for a particular environment. Many
related research works have been done in this area.
In [37] path loss models were presented from experimental data collected in Port Harcourt South
South region of Nigeria from 10 existing microcells operating at 876MHz. The path loss models for
the urban and the suburban areas of Port Harcourt were developed from the results of the

Received Signal Strength (RSS) in which the TEMS serves as the Mobile Unit, for this purpose. In
each of the three sectors of the six (6) targets Base Transmitting Stations, Ten (10) different Received
Power measurements were conducted. Variances were observed in the measurements, at the same
distance in the different sectors for all the BTSs which signifies different levels of clutter on the
Propagation path. The path loss exponent, n, was derived statistically through the application of linear
regression analysis technique by minimising in a mean square sense, the difference between the

  • 2. The Resolution Of The Hostages On The Basis Of... Initially, the President s response was to appeal for the release of the hostages on the basis of humanitarian grounds, but this was ineffective against the Muslim Student Followers of the Imam s Line because their main goal was to bring the Shah and the United States to justice, and taking hostages was just a means to do so. Since there were so many hostages taken, the United States had to tread carefully with their diplomacy. They were the ones against odds with everything to lose. The United States should have given an ultimatum earlier on in the hostage crisis, when the motives and end goals of the Muslim Students were not fully determined (Harris, 54). The hostage crisis also paved the way for an increase of political power among Muslim extremist groups such as the Irainian Mujahedin; which would then split into two groups known today as Al Qaeda and ISIS (Cold War Museum). Many of theses extremist groups saw the hostage crisis as a war to end American imperialism. The Muslim Students that took hostages decided early on that their quarrel was with American diplomats, so the militants released thirteen women and African Americans just weeks into the hostage crisis. And finally, one hostage, Richard Queen, was released during July of 1980 when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Contrary to common belief, the hostages were actually moved from the embassy to prisons in Tehran by August of 1980 (Baqr, 97). President Jimmy Carter was in the midst of his first term, ... • 3. Intertextual Analysis of Works of Art Postmodern art is the representation of the return to pre modern art styles and genres, and there is no longer a division between art, popular culture, and media. This philosophical term challenged and reacted against what modernism had to say, echoing dramatic changes in our social and economic features. Furthermore postmodern essays and critiques coincided with the arrival of contemporary art. Contemporary art is more socially conscious and philosophically all encompassing of several styles and medias than art works previous to this era. Contemporary art is experimental and often includes crossbreeds of styles, as well as mixes of many varied periods of art history from earlier times to the present times. Contemporary art cultivates ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since Jansen s painting is inspired by his own unique interpretation of the world and how past, present and future intertwine we are lead into the Psychoanalytical theory of art. I feel this theory fits best with Jansen s painting Surreal . The psychoanalytical theory is about bringing what is in the unconscious out from it hiding place, because our dreams, wishes, and human nature are what makes artwork. According to Sigmund Freud past, present and future are threaded, as it were, on the string of the wish that runs through them all (p.109). He means that some event in the present employs a plan to a future on the pattern of the past. Like dreams though, works of art embody all three modes of time in a unique synthesis. Jansen s art employs all three past present and future. He shows us the present with the urban cityscape that has an apocalyptic foreboding feel to it that the future could be. And the past is brought in with Jansen s own background and how history repeats it self in that the future could be like the past economic depression. The intact potential available to the artist allows one to instantly tap into the subconscious when making the art, demonstrating that it can be incredibly satisfying and illuminating. The Expressionist theory of art is that the relationship between the artists, the work of art, and the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Killing For Companionship Summary The selections When killing is thrilling (Fox Levin, Chapter 4) and Killing for companionship (Fox Levin, Chapter 7) represent the factors that cause individuals to commit crime. They analyze the different emotions and sensations serial killers experience when they commit crime such as pleasure and happiness. While some individuals commit crime to experience joy and excitement, others commit crime for companionship. The section When killing is thrilling (Fox Levin, Chapter 4) focuses on the excitement and pleasure serial killers experience when they commit gruesome acts. The section Killing for companionship (Fox Levin, Chapter 7) analyzes how serial killers who lack social bonds seek crime as a source for bonding and having ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The section Killing for companionship (Fox Levin, Chapter 7) focuses on individuals who commit crime to fill their feelings of loneliness and lack of support from others. This section also describes how some serial killers use dead bodies as if they were alive to eat with them and have a conversation. These individuals may suffer from schizophrenia and hear the voices of their dead victims speaking to them. Research studies find that schizophrenic individuals are more violent and aggressive than the rest of the population. The section Killing for companionship (Fox Levin, Chapter 7) fits the schizophrenia disorder because serial killers described in this section were more likely to experience hallucination and delusions and acted on them due to anger and absence of having social support. Due to the lack of support, serial killers who feel abandoned or fail to have bonds with others may engage in conversations and activities with dead bodies to fill the void of being ... • 5. Metastasis Term Paper Metastasis is a hallmark of caner and leading to reduced survival rates of cancer patients. The ability of a cancer cell to undergo migration and invasion allows it to change position within the tissues. Metastasis consists of five steps which are termed the metastatic cascade (Fig. 1). These five steps of cascade are invasion and migration, intravastion, circulation, extravasation, Colonization, proliferation and angiogenesis. Various cellular processes like de regulated cell growth, loss of cell cell adhesion, migration through the underlying interstitial stroma, altered survival signaling which support metastatic spread, therapy resistance and unrestricted tumor growth, facilitate these five step of metastatic cascade. The factors limiting the growth of malignant neoplasm include the basal membrane and various components of the surrounding stroma, increased interstitial pressure, limited oxygen supply to tumor cells and the formation of active oxygen forms, hypoxia conditions, and permanent exposure to immune system cells. Given the intra tumoral heterogeneity, in the struggle for survival, some tumor cells may be subjected to regression and death, while other cells, which resist powerful, counteracting micro environmental factors, gain an aggressive phenotype and the ability of metastatic progression. Invasive tumor growth is enabled by the detachment of malignant cells from the tumor mass due to a reduction in or complete loss of intercellular adhesion molecules, and, therefore, the cells gain the ability of anomalously high motility enabling penetration through the stiff structural elements of the surrouss means the ability to thrust aside adjacent tissues, and also to actively invade and, therefore, destroy these ... • 6. Ancient Greece s Influence On Modern Day Fashion Ancient Greece is not just ancient history, there is a relation between ancient Greece to modern day in several different ways. Few relations are seen in fashion, architecture, and sculpting. To see ancient Greece still have a relation in the 21st century is remarkable. The hallmark of ancient Greek fashion was elaborate draping, not much detail and can also see images of Greek styles painted on pottery. You see in today s clothing the white one shoulder dress for women which is considered a formal dress, people relate it to the Greek Goddess dress . It flows over on one side, with usually a gold accent belt to go along with the dress. In addition, there are sandals that have been in fashion for few years now, called gladiators . The strapped ... From paintings, to interior decorating, you see the use of ancient Greek patterns in the industry. For sculpting, ancient Greece influenced sculpting today by introducing detail to sculpting. They used marble, stone, limestone, and clay to create their sculptures. That has helped us create the base of the materials we use today for sculpting and even with architecture. In modern day architecture, we have almost simplified the way buildings look. Fourunately, ancient Greece architectural influence is still seen mostly at formal banquet halls today. The columns in entry ways, usually the capital is either doric or ionic. The interior well detailed with the use of marble as flooring, and patterns is still seen in modern day architecture. • 7. Mise-En-Scne Challenges Linear Temporality Mise En Scène Challenges Linear Temporality Alfred Hitchcock s Rope (1948) creates suspense through the dramatic irony of a dinner party where the missing guest s dead body is hidden in the very chest off of which the guests dine. Brandon (John Dall) and Phillip s (Farley Granger) Nietzschean ideals are not fully revealed to the audience until the introduction of critical supporting character Rupert Cadell (James Stewart). An impeccably dressed, suave, intellectual man, Rupert reveals critical information about the men which eventually spoils Brandon s plan. The expository characterization of Rupert through performance and costume elements of mise en scène adds important background information about Brandon and Phillip and challenges them intellectually, thus creating tension around the linear temporality of Brandon s plan and the plot. Through Stewart s performance, Rupert acts in ways to indicate a familiarity with Brandon and Phillip which contrasts the forward movement of the rest of the plot. The film closely follows linear temporality, or a plot which follows chronological time, through a logical succession of calculated events designed by Brandon to torment his guests. Rupert challenges, and ultimately foils, this neat progression by interjecting information about the men s past. Rupert s regressive comments are presented as the audience first meets him through calling out improvements in Phillip s piano playing. Stewart s performance paints Rupert as an elite intellectual whom Brandon idolizes. Brandon regresses in his presence, stumbling over his words and nervously repeating himself, which Rupert likens to his past by saying, You always did stutter when you were excited. His naming of Brandon and Phillip s faults emphasizes his familiarity with them as younger men, thus further contrasting the linearity of the story with constant nostalgia. Hitchcock s manipulation of linear temporality exaggerates a long term cause and effect relationship that would not be apparent to viewers without Rupert s character spotlighting the past. Viewers learn that Rupert is the source of Brandon s Nietzschean ideas, and Rupert is forced to come to terms with the terrible resulting effects of exposing young people to ... • 9. Movie Review of On the Waterfront Reaction: On the Waterfront (1956) Even before I saw Eli Kazan s On the Waterfront, I was familiar with the line of Marlon Brando s: I could have been a contender. I knew, even before watching the film, that Brando played an ex boxer with broken dreams. I also knew that the film had been made during the McCarthy era, around the time of the red scare. In the film, Brando s character Terry Malloy witnesses a murder, and is encouraged to turn in the perpetrators, even though his union bosses are involved. The film portrays the dockworker Malloy s decision to come forward as a heroic one, partially rooted in his love for the dead man s sister Edie. (Edie s brother was killed for the same reason as Terry is being persecuted he informed on the union bosses). Knowing the back story of the film, I felt somewhat uncomfortable rooting for Brando to turn in his bosses, given that the film could be read as a defense of turning in people during the McCarthy era. The film portrays unions as made up of villains. Malloy is one of them a union member until he becomes so tormented by his conscience he cannot help but come forward. He cannot live with himself unless he speaks. Eventually, because of the public courage of his convictions, the other longshoremen side with Terry. The film is powerful as a story in and of itself, regardless of what the director intended it to symbolize. It can be read as an indictment of corruption and concealment in all industries, as members ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Deception In Memoirs Of A Geisha By Arthur Golden Thesis: In the novel, Memoirs of a Geisha, by Arthur Golden the theme of deception is prominent. Through the deception experienced by Sayuri, golden teaches his readers that deception can hurt but it can lead to something better. Methods of development: Deception from Mr. Tanaka I couldn t stop thinking about Mr.Tanaka. He had taken me away from my mother and father, sold me into slavery, sold my sister into something even worse. I had taken him as a kind man. I thought he was so refined, so worldly. What a stupid child I had been. I would never go back to Yoroido, I decided. Or if I did , it would only be to tell Mr. Tanaka how much I hated him. (Golden pg.82) But the truth is that the afternoon when I met Mr. Tanaka Ichiro really was the best and worst of my life. (Golden pg.7) Sayuri admired Mr. Tanaka and wanted to become his adopted daughter, after being taken away from her home she was extremely hurt and felt stupid for believing in him. She felt as though her life would never be the same again, and even tried to run away risking her chances of becoming a Geisha. Sayuri eventually benefited from this as she herself noticed that living in Gion allowed her to become much more successful allowing her to take care of herself. She recognized that if she had remained in Yoroido she would have never been able to achieve success and that she would still be living in her little tipsy house with little to support herself. • 11. The Multinational Corporation Boom And Its Reasons In this paper the multinational corporation boom and its reasons are investigated and then the challenges which these corporations encounter will be discussed. There are certain reasons associated with the rapid growth of multinational corporations during the last 50 years. Including but not limited to globalization, information technology telecommunication, deregulations and worldwide market liberalization and the operation in the emerging economies and the growth opportunity in these countries. Globalization) Globalization is the process of international integration caused by the exchange of products, ideas and other aspects of the culture in a global scale. Scholars still disagree whether the globalization caused the inception of multinational corporations or vice versa. Although globalization is the phenomena which belongs to the modern era, the earliest samples of multinational corporations could be traced back to 17th century Dutch and English India companies. Therefore it is generally believed that multinational corporations are both a cause and a result of the globalization process. The globalization has manifested itself in the interdependence of national economies and financial markets. There are different dimensions for the growth of multinational corporations in globalization era. The economic dimension of the multinational corporation growth can be presented through the numbers; including the fact that approximately 33% of the world trade consists of ... Philosophers Mill and Kant both share similarities and differences on their view on life and most of all on the meaning of a good life. Mill bases morality on the principle of utility which states , that actions or behaviors are right in so far as they promote happiness or pleasure , wrong as they tend to produce unhappiness or pain . While Kant bases morality on the categorical imperative which is, an unconditional moral obligation that is blinding in all circumstances and is not dependent on a person s inclination or purpose . Mill and Kant both join in their proposed first rule of profound quality a sort of all inclusiveness, for Kant s situation that of confining one s standards of activity to people who it can serve to be a widespread law of nature, for Mill s situation considering the outcomes of a sort of activity for all people. Both perceive transitional good guidelines , called by Kant obligations and by Mill subordinate standards . Accordingly the 2 philosophers have a 2 step origination of moral thought. While Vladek was in Auschwitz he learned the art of tin working and he used his previous knowledge of shoe repairing to get on the good side of the Kapo s. • 19. Searle Vs Sartre With philosophy, nothing is black and white. Deciphering philosophical views is unlike anything else because there is more depth and analysis that has to be put into play. It is about understanding what the philosopher is trying to get across while making inferences about what they truly mean or could mean. The thing about it is that at some times it tends to be a contradiction within itself: while certain things can be true under certain circumstances, the opposite could be true under different circumstances. Many ideas are hard to grasp and can be interpreted in various ways depending on how people want to take it. Without this sense of one s self, the mind takes a dangerous path and finds negative things to evoke the desired feeling of completeness. • 27. Theme Of The Poem 1958 By Gwendolyn Mcewen In the poem 1958, Gwendolyn MacEwen describes the high school environment as it would have been in the late 1950 s. Popular fads among the teenagers during this era are explored in detail. The prevailing theme throughout the text pertains to the idea of belonging. The poem focuses primarily on the desire teenagers have to fit in. Throughout this response I will explore the ways in which this poem differs and relates to the high school environment today. Secondly I will analyze the connections between this poem and a modern day movie. Lastly, I will express the ways in which my personal experiences relate to the central message in the poem. This statement is still relevant today; however teenage boys now speak in a form of speech referred to as gangster slang . Even though this was taking place somewhere else, I expected that I would still be able to have a role not involving leadership. This was not the case because Mr. Fitz had something else in store for me.
