Secretary Gates Weaknesses
The two featured articles had opposing positions on Secretary Gates. Finel s article shows him failing
as a strategic leader; while Boot s showcases a more positive image of his accomplishments in the
position. As I look to identify his strengths and weaknesses, using the strategic leadership
competencies in the SLP, I feel that his greatest strength was problem management and his greatest
weakness was negotiation. Secretary Gates has many strengths, but problem management was the one
that seems most dominant. In his 4 1/2 year tenure as Secretary of Defense, he demonstrated that he
could handle difficult problems swiftly. Whether it was pushing for improved equipment on the
battlefield (such as unmanned aerial vehicles or MRAPs) that

Authentically Portrayed Women in Literature Essay
Leo Tolstoy s Anna Karenina; Margaret Mitchell s Gone with the Wind; Tennessee Williams A
Streetcar Named Desire. Upon first glance, these classics of literary legend appear to have nothing in
common. However, looking closer, one concept unites these three works of art. At the center of each
story stands a woman an authentically portrayed woman. A woman with strengths, flaws, desires,
memories, hopes, and dreams. Tolstoy s Anna Karenina, Mitchell s Scarlett O Hara, and Williams
Blanche DuBois are beautiful, intelligent, sophisticated women: strong yet fragile, brazen yet subtle,
carnal yet pure. Surviving literature that depicts women in such a realistic and moving fashion is still
very rare today, and each piece of that unique genre ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Indeed, the two sisters believed that the beautiful pure freedom of a woman was infinitely more
wonderful than any sexual love (Lawrence, Lady 1994 7). The author maintains this stance on women
s independence, but he tweaks it slightly over the course of the story. Connie marries Clifford
Chatterley, an aristocrat and owner of the estate Wragby Hall, who is paralyzed from the waist down
because of a war injury, rendering him impotent. Clifford devotes himself to his work writing and
Connie remains ignored. A Sleeping Beauty, she has not awakened to life (Squires in Lawrence, Lady
1994 xxi). This lack of connection with her husband fans the flame of Connie s sexual inquisitiveness,
first ignited in an erotic encounter, when she spies on Mellors bathing naked. In Sons and Lovers,
Mrs. Gertrude Morel s personality is a near polar opposite to Connie s. Whereas Connie is earthy,
sensual, and physical, Mrs. Morel is proud, unyielding, and intellectual (Murfin 34). She is associated
with control, consciousness, coolness, and colors suggesting purity (Murfin 38). In a letter to a friend,
Lawrence himself wrote the simplest explanation of Mrs. Morel s role in the novel: The son loves the
mother all the sons hate and are jealous of the father. The battle goes on between the mother and the
girl, with the son as object. The mother gradually proves

Large Ear Lab Report
In this lab, my group concluded that there are 1,992 beans in the large jar display. The true value of the
beans in the jar was 2,051. My team s technique was that we found the tare weight of the beaker with
the beans to be 49. 912g. Next we found the overall weight to be 95.301g. Then we found the average
mass of ten beans, which was .47 g all together. After we found that we subtracted the mass of the
beaker with the beans from the tare weight to find the weight of the beans. After my team found the
weight of the beans we divided it by the average weight of the beans and got 97 beans. We repeated
these steps with the information from the large jar and got our estimate of 1,992 beans. Our estimate
was close to the actual amount of beans, we were only 59 beans away from the true amount. Our peers
in other groups did well too, there averages ranged closely from 1,900 to 2,000 beans in the jar. ...

this small percent tells us that we were very close to our targeted number. I believe the reason for error
was that we did not have a wide enough range for the weight and volume of the beans. I believe if we
took in account, the idea of having different size beans like big ones and smaller ones and their mass,
then we would have had an even smaller percent error. If I could, I would go back and use more beans
as an example and discuss the different sizes. Other teams had close comparisons with ours, two
others had used the mass method and their percent errors were 2.49% and 7.36%. The other team who
used the volume method, their percent value was 5.07%. all around our percent errors were small but

Catullus Before Death Do Us Analysis
Until Death Do Us Part After a long and perilous journey from Verona, Catullus had finally arrived at
Rome. As he stood by the entrance to that magnificent and intimidating city, his emotions overtook
him like a tempestuous storm. He had left his family and his filial duties in order to pursue a glorious
career in his vocation and avocation: poetry. For Catullus, the small town of Verona was a cultural
wasteland; it suffered from a paucity of playwrights, poets, and prose writers. Only in Rome, with its
diverse and cultured populace, could he truly fulfill his dreams of becoming one of Latin s greatest
poets. Thus, as he stood by the gates of Rome, he felt a mixture of feelings; excitement and
apprehension at the future lying beyond the entranceway s ivory veneer, and a sense of sadness and
melancholia at the past he was forever abandoning. Catullus had not yet taken two full strides in Rome
before being suddenly accosted by a pulchritudinous young lady. Introducing herself as Lesbia, the
voluptuous woman graciously invited Catullus into her house for a meal. Catullus did not hesitate for
a moment to accept Lesbia s invitation, indeed he had little choice; Lesbia s roseate cheeks and
comely features had already put Catullus under her amorous spell. Once inside Lesbia s capacious

he. Catullus writhed in his chair, desperately seeking someway to break free of his bonds and exact
revenge on his traitorous wife to be. But to no avail. His body was later discovered by a Roman child
on the outskirts of the city. His death remains shrouded in mystery until this

Hawthorne s Young Goodman Brown and History Essay
Young Goodman Brown and History
Q. D. Leavis states that perhaps the persecuting aspect of their way of life was peculiarly present to
Hawthorne because of the witch hanging judge and the Quaker whipping Major among his ancestors
(30). This is a reference to one instance of historical allusion in Nathaniel Hawthorne s Young
Goodman Brown. This essay will explore a variety of historical incidences referred to in this short
story.
Clarice Swisher in Nathaniel Hawthorne: a Biography states:
William Hathorne was a colonial magistrate involved in the persecution of Quakers, another Protestant
religious group. Hawthorne later described him as grave, bearded, sable cloaked, and ... Show more

And it was I that brought your father a pitch pine knot, kindled at my own hearth, to set fire to an
Indian village, in King Philip s War. They were my good friends, both; and many a pleasant walk have
we had along this path, and returned merrily after midnight.
Notice the allusion to the historical episode from Hawthorne s life mentioned by Leavis and Swisher
above. In addition to the Quaker incident from the author s past, there is also the tragedy of the witch
hanging judge in his past, also mentioned by Leavis and Swisher above. Wagenknecht states in
Nathaniel Hawthorne that, of the three Salem women mentioned in Young Goodman Brown, two of
these were hanged; all three were accused in 1692 (60). Wagenknecht continues: When the devil
speaks of his intimacy with Brown s ancestors and of their cruelty toward Quakers and Indians,
Hawthorne is clearly thinking of his own forbears (60). Thus it is seen that the historicity of these
short story episodes is well established.
A proper, accurate interpretation of Young Goodman Brown depends on the reader s knowledge of an
historical occurrence from June of 1692, when a group of important Boston clergymen issued a
statement which declared that it was an undoubted and notorious thing, that a demon may, by God s
permission, appear, even to ill purposes, in the shape of an innocent, yea, and a virtuous man (60). The
parallel to this historic declaration is found in

The Argument Over Nuclear Energy
Nuclear energy has many benefits, but do they outweigh the cons? The argument over nuclear energy
has continued for many years. Nuclear power does not emit greenhouse gases and produces massive
amounts of energy, but does produce gargantuous amounts of radioactive waste. The benefits of
nuclear power do not outweigh the cons. Firstly, harmful radioactive waste is a con. Radioactive waste
is concentrated lethally (5). Radioactive waste is very dangerous and could kill people if not disposed
of correctly. If exposed to the waste could cause: radiation sickness, cancers, and other health
problems (5). Also, huge amounts of waste are disposed of at at time. Which means it would be highly
concentrated and High level radioactive waste can

The Indigo Spell
I survived reading The Ruby Circle. Can you believe it? I have battle wounds and I live to tell you this
wondrous tale. I know a half ass written book when I see one. The Ruby Circle, is it. This book is a
train wreck waiting to happen since The Fiery Heart and I couldn t get off fast enough. Despite its
second rate book covers and predictable plot. I genuinely loved the first two books of Bloodlines
series. The third book, The Indigo Spell isn t as bad as the latter ones but I don t have a soft spot for it
as its prior installments. The last three books, however is the downfall of the series. I will try to keep
my review with minimum spoilers, but there are no promises guarantees. Bloodlines series follows the
story of Sydney Sage, a teenager girl who is part of an Alchemist organization. They aim to prevent
humans from discovering there is another species apart from them. When Sydney was sent to Palm

It is, in essence, a large data storage facility which enables an enterprise to gain a competitive
advantage through analytics and business intelligence. Providing integrated access to multiple,
distributed, heterogeneous databases and other information sources has become one of the leading
issues in database research and industry, IEEE Computer (1991) which can be seen through the
success of First American Corporation (FAC), Cooper et al (2000) and Tesco/Dunnhumby, J. Perry
(2009).
Data mining is the process of digging out patterns from data, usually through Clustering,
Classification, Regression and Association rule learning. Data mining technology can generate new
business opportunities by providing: Automated prediction of trends and behaviours. Automated
discovery of previously unknown or hidden patterns
D. Champion and C. Coombs (2010)
This process is carried out by sophisticated software packages such as Oracle, IBM and SQL. This
alleviates the (potentially) very time consuming task of manually inputting and analysing the data
Within data warehousing, there is a high importance placed on the quality of data, as without it,
meaningful analysis is impossible. Data collection should therefore be taken with a high level of
detail, and have solid definitions, as to avoid subjectivity.
The purpose of a data warehouse is to support creative strategic decision making through a greater
granularity of information with a

Becoming A Saint Research Paper
The process of becoming a saint is a prolonged one, it can take up to five years just to earn the title,
Saint . But if there is someone there who wants to be a saint, I will be telling you the step by step on
how you can earn this title. The first step is to die, as we believe that Saints are in heaven with God.
This means at some point after thier death, word of mouth from someone who knew the potential
saint, or a member of the religous community asks their local bishop to begin the cause for
canonization. As soon as the bishop agrees, the potential Saint receives the title, Servant Of God.
Next, a formal review is undertaken, guided by historians and theologians; the bishop may decide to
send the cause to Rome, at the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. This department determines if
the potential saint has shown heroic sanctity in their lifetime, worthy of imitation. To illustrate my
point, did they live a life marked by virtuous actions? Did they do good works out of love of God and
neighbors? If so, with the Pope s decree, they are declared, Venerable. ... Show more content on

A miracle after their death is evidence that the person is indeed in heaven with God interceding for us
here on Earth. It is actually God performing the miracles, yet the potential Saint is credited with
assisting God with his miracle. The process of confirming that a miracle truly happened must be:
instantaneous, lasting, and unexplainable. An example of verifying this criteria, is doctors and
scientific experts scrutinizing medical and scientific records, or non religous skeptics are invited to try
to disprove of the miracle. On top of that, there has to be evidence that people prayed for the
intercession of the would be Saint before the cure. So once there is proof that a miracle resulted from
the aspiring Saints intercession, the person may now be officially called

The Problem Of The Medical Marijuana Industry
The medical marijuana industry has seen staggering growth in recent years with many state level
legalizations and the federal memo issued in 2013 that told prosecutors to leave these businesses
alone, as long as they comply with all their state laws. Colorado was the first state to legalize
marijuana for recreational purposes and marijuana infused edibles soon became a rapidly growing
element within the marijuana industry. As such, states are struggling to write effective legislation and
create adequate testing and identification to address this new industry. However, compliance is just
one area of risk management faced by the marijuana edibles industry. Just as any other manufacturer
of a food product, edibles manufacturers face many hazard risks in the operation of their business
(Frosch, 2014).
Hazard risks are one of the four classifications of risks, which also include operational risks, financial
risks and strategic risks. Identifying risks in this classification system focuses on the source of the risk
as opposed to identifying by the type of risk. Hazard risks are classified as a pure risk, arising from
property, liability or personnel loss exposures. These risks are insurable risks and typically are covered
by an insurance policy. Fire and other property damage, windstorm and other natural perils, theft and
other crimes (including personal injury), business interruption, disease and disability (including work
related injuries and disease), and liability claims are

How To Build A Flat Roof
Turn to the Hammersmith Company in Burnsville, MN when you re looking for flat roofing experts.
Flat roofing is very popular on commercial buildings. However, this roofing style is also seen on some
residents. A flat roof works especially well with modern homes. The straight clean lines of the flat roof
lends itself to the lines of the modern styled home. When it comes time to install this kind of roof you
ll have to choose between different types. In the past, a sloped roof had a big advantage over a flat
one, it would last longer. The reason for this was that a sloped roof would allow snow, and rain to roll
off, while a flat roof is not designed for this. However, things have come a long way and they re now
lasting much longer than they used to. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

A. Nursing sensitive indicators
By understanding nursing sensitive indicators, the nurses in this case could improve the structure,

nursing staff and the skill level of the nursing staff. By the nurses having increased knowledge of the
issues hip fracture patients are prone to having, such as decrease mobility, increase need for surgical

Now, the quality improvement department will need to determine what processes can be modified to
improve outcomes. For example, if they see an increase in pressure sores and prevalence of restraints.
They could use computerized charting and order entry, along with the evidence based guidelines, to
identify specific groups of patients who are vulnerable to developing pressure ulcers or closely
monitoring use of restraints. With early identification, automatic orders for preventive interventions
can be implemented quickly. With the assistance of the automated consults and orders, the appropriate
equipment, the interdisciplinary task force, continuing education, and monitoring, the hospital system
would be able to reduce unnecessary use of restraints and hospital acquired pressure ulcer prevalence
rate (Cherry amp; Jacob, 2010).
Then, they would need to implement core measures and protocols. Continuously track performance
and outcomes. Lastly, they can disseminate results to throughout the hospital to increase quality
improvement (Cherry amp; Jacob, 2010).
By educating staff on nursing sensitive indicators and the issues that need to be addressed, could
advance the quality of patient care throughout the hospital. In this case, educating hospital staff on
ways to prevent restraint use and pressure sore prevention, the staff could have possible prevented the
use of restraints and the pressure sore. Also, by educating staff on how to use restraints would be

Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Case Study
Initially, responses were slow to the oil spill because it was off of the coast. On March 25th, crews
transferred the oil that was not spilled to the Exxon Baton Rouge tanker to be brought back to shore.
Authorities attempted to burn the oil nears the spill site, while aircrafts applied dispersants to break up
the oil in the area. Sadly, there were not enough of these dispersants available to affect an oil spill this
vast. On March 26th, a winter storm in the area spread the oil over 100 square miles, where it made it

What Is The Mood Of The Count Of Monte Cristo
Just like every great story The Count of Monte Cristo has its own particular and mesmerizing settings.
Alexandre Dumas not only amazes us with breathtaking and exotic places but he also takes us to the
darkest and goriest corners that you could ever imagine, places that could even alter the emotional
state of the strongest man. This novel begins at a French seaside town called Marseilles, Edmond s
hometown and home for all his loved ones and all his enemies. The Chateau d If is a prison
completely surrounded by water which is really conventional since it makes it impossible for the
prisoners to escape from it. This is the place where our main character spent fourteen years of his life

being a fictional setting, this place is one of the most important ones in the whole book. This is the
place where our dear Edmond finds Abbe Faria s treasure and where he builds up his mini castle and

Trifle By Susan Glaspell Essay
Among every story there is always a hidden truth, and Trifle is no exception. Written in 1916 by Susan
Glaspell the play narrates the story of Minnie Foster and the serious of events that led her to
murdering her husband. Symbols such as the house, a canary and a birdcage are applied to
significantly emphasize Minnie Foster isolation. The house is a major symbol. Even though the home
is the closest to town, it is located down in a hollow and can not been seen from the road. Trifles
focuses on the death of an oppressive husband at the hand of his emotionally abused wife in an
isolated and remote farm in the midwest. (Barlow 70 86) The seclusion of the home constructs a
lonely environment. Thus Minnie Foster is separated from the world, ... Show more content on

Mrs. Hale compres Minnie to a canary She was kind of like a bird herself real sweet and pretty, but
kind of timid and fluttery (Glaspell 1011) Birds are a symbol of freedom. They are meant to fly and be
in constant movement. Their spirits are wild, and can not be contained. Their home is the endless skies
and the comforts of the clouds. The comparison is ironic since Minnie Foster s spirit is isolated and
has been contained in a unpleasant marriage. Glaspell paint quickly establishes that the canary
symbolizes the particular cheerful side of Mrs. Wright destroyed by the oppression of her marriage.
(Sutten 170 178) Canaries are full of life and brightness. After her marriage the oppression of her
husband has killed her cheerful side and raped her of her life. The canary is known for its beautiful
voice. The bird s song is a replacement to the silence of a marriage without children. Love,
particularly maternal is associated with sound and in its absace with silence ( Makowsky 61) Minnie is
a caretaker with no children to take care of. Beyond being isolated she is lonely and deprived from her
true desires. The bird just like herself has been trapped and condemned to live in

Isabel Allene s Gold Rush In Daughter Of Fortune
When gold was discovered in 1848, a gold rush was created. James Marshall discovered it at Sutter s
Mill. People from around the world came to find gold for themselves and strike it rich. People left
their belongings and their families behind for a chance to find gold. Many people who came to
California did not find gold and lost most of their money. Before this California was relatively small
in population. Many towns in California that were small turned into boomtowns. Boomtowns were
cities which population grew exponentially. San Francisco had a population of 200 residents and then
grew to over 30,000 people during the gold rush. With all the people coming in, violence, gangs,
prostitution, and land destruction arose.

Many people lied to make money off of others. Jacob Todd was a man from end who lost a bet and
had to sell bibles in Chile. He received money from the church because they thought he was
missionary. He moved to California after he was found to be a fraud. He made himself a journalist. As
a journalist he makes money by making up stories about Joaquin. He writes that he is a bad person. He
says he is a bandit. With the spur of the gold rush, many different ethnic groups came to one area. At
first there was little racism. Late on, people began to act against each other. They committed hate
crimes against the other races. Each ethnic group made their own communities to protect themselves
and stay together. Although racism played a big part in the gold rush, some people still managed to
stay together and look past ethnic backgrounds. A good example of this is Elzia and Tao. Eliza has a
Chilean background while Tao has an Asian background. They lived together through the hard times
of the gold rush. They had a relationship, which grew over their journey looking for Joaquin. Although
times were hard and money was scarce, they stayed

The bench marking is also used as input for performance evaluation system and to take corrective and
preventive actions based upon weaknesses identified.
3. Would you choose to centralize the recruitment function? Why or why not?
Yes I would recommend centralization of recruitment function among different units because of
following advantages:
a) Uniform record keeping systems
b) Better internal mobility for employees
c) Job rotation of employees enhances their skills
d) Cost of recruitment is reduced due to combining of requirements and increased efficiency, such as
software and administration cost
e) Uniform corporate identity among employees and public
f) Easier for candidates as they have to apply through one window and also attend interview only
once. The organisation benefits by interviewing each candidate only once for all units.
g) Compensation system and administrations systems at each unit can be further made more uniform
based on common recruitment function.
4. If you recommend a centralized recruiting office, what services would it provide?
a) Receive labour recruitments with specifications from various units.
b) Maintain common database of potential candidates.
c) Advertising and promotional campaigns for improving corporate identity and attract talent.

The Role Of Water Security In The Jordan River Basin
Abstract
The scarcity, depletion and polluting of water in one of the world s driest regions, is a problem that has
perplexed the nations of the Middle East for decades. The riparian states of the Jordan River Basin
include Israel, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. These states are in a constant struggle over securing water
rights for their respective states. The conflict over water is also overshadowed by the Arab Israeli
issues and the subsequent territorial questions. While territory is often at the forefront of the issues,
securing water has also become a contributing factor in the conflicts of the past, and will continue in
the future. Choices of conflict or cooperation will have to be made, given the diminishing amounts of
water available. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many countries are also highly dependent on water that originates outside their borders; the water
diversion provided by dams for countries that are downstream exacerbates an already serious problem.
The diversion of river systems is an area of international concern, the nature and extent of such
interdependency is already extensive: 145 countries share over 261 international river basin. As
demand increases, and as indigenous sources of water become fully utilized or exhausted, the only
alternatives are likely to be international (Dolatyar, 2006). Ironically, the very solution of one country
s scarcity, plunges another into water shortage, this is the reason why water security is one of the most
crucial foreign policy considerations of a globally connected economic and political atmosphere.
Water as a source of conflict
When one thinks of turmoil in the Middle East, oil is often the first thought, however, water has begun
to be a problematic area, both internal and international. However, the cause for water scarcity does
not only depend on conditions within its borders (Giordano, Giordano Wolf , 2004). Israel s water
source comes from the Jordan River, an elongated valley in the central Middle East, and is shared with
Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Palestine (Lowi, 1995). The Hasbani River, the Dan River, and the Banyas
River are the three tributaries of the Jordan River. Although the Jordan Basin extends into five states,

Those radiated light is supposed to leave the Earth, but instead they are absorbed by the greenhouse
gases, and radiated back to the surface of the Earth. This continuous process of circulation of radiated
heat within the Earth s atmosphere causes the rise in the temperature of earth. ( Global Climate

the radiated heat include water vapor, Carbon dioxide (CO2), Methane, Nitrous oxide,
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC s), etc. The presence of all these gases in the atmosphere is the main
reason of the greenhouse effect, and it is what that causes global warming. ( Global Climate Change:

Researchers and scientists say that the greenhouse effect is the main cause of global warming. The
greenhouse effect is a natural process which is necessary to support life on Earth. It becomes a
problem when the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere increases. The greenhouse effect is
caused by the uncontrolled emission of harmful gases in the atmosphere. The harmful gases are
emitted on a daily basis while carrying out major human activities. Some of the sources of harmful
gases include power plants, industries, vehicles, fossil fuels, etc. ( Global Climate Change: Causes. )

Siddhartha Gautama s Life And Spiritual Religion
Siddhartha Gautama s Life Spiritual religion is one of the main aspects of human civilization.
Buddhism is one of four religions that have the most followers besides Christianity, Judaism, and

His life has a great influence on this religious belief. Siddhartha s Birth Siddhartha Gautama was born
as the royal prince at Lumini (a place in Nepal now) in 6th century B.C.E. His father was the king of a
clan named Shakyas named Shuddhodana Gautama, and his mother was queen Mayadevi ( The Birth

the poverty people. After returning to the palace, the Queen had the dream that the white elephant

giving birth of the child, she did not experience the pain. It was a miracle birth. The Hindu gods and

Tet Offensive Tactics
While serving in the Marine Corps infantry, it was drilled into my head that in order to win on the
battlefield, one needed to strike faster, harder, and more aggressive than the enemy. These tactics have
proven to be very efficient on the front lines, and have won countless battles for many U.S. troops.
Though our actions on the front lines may be very effective, they are not the only deciding factors in
winning the war. Without the support from the people back home, our battlefield objectives would be
very hard to obtain. America learned this lesson first hand during the Vietnam war, and more
specifically, during the attacks of the Tet Offensive.

I will begin by giving a brief explanation of how the U.S. got involved in the Vietnam War, along with
some of the motives that sparked the conflict. In order to understand the full picture of the Vietnam
war, I believe that it is important to know why America was there in the first place. Next, I will be
discussing the events of the Tet Offensive and the battles that followed. The massive attack launched
against U.S. troops during the Tet Offensive caused a shift in the war that had many negative
outcomes for America. Following the events of the Tet Offensive, I will discuss the media s role in the
conflict. The Vietnam War was the first American war to be broadcasted for all to see. This brings me
to my next, and final point, the public s opinion. The availability of combat footage led to the spark of
many antiwar movements. Many antiwar protests took place at universities, such as the University of

will help to connect the dots between the Tet Offensive, carried out by the North Vietnamese, and
America s less than victorious withdrawal from the Vietnam

The Economic Model Growth Of Energy
Energy is one of the main drivers of economic and social development. Years ago, the only uncertainty
was the price of oil. Now the concern is if the current economic model growth is reasonable in a world
with limited energy resources. This has lead to more research in other forms of resources of energy.
Now we have other unconventional resources such as wind, solar, geothermal, water, and so on.
Energy demand is set to double by 2050 (Beckman, 2013). Therefore, greenhouse gases could double
by 2050 as well. Hence, renewable energy is vital. However seen as fossil fuel is still the dominate
source of energy, it makes it the current economic model growth rate somewhat unreasonable.
Acceleration rate in policy, technological innovation, and consumer expectations are making the
energy market increasingly complex. We would need innovation, incentives, investments and stronger
technical standards to reduce the world s energy intensity. When the industrial revolution began, the
amount of carbon in Britain in form of coal was as much as the carbon in Saudi Arabia in from of oil.
This coal improved the economy of Great Britain in 19th and thereafter. Just as coal production had its
peak and declined thereafter, is the same way the oil production would. About 55 of the 65 oil
producing countries have already peaked in production. Many of the other countries left are expected
to follow in the near future. Modern cities are fossil fuel dependent; even roads are made from
bitumen.

Gilpin And Fiscal
Unlike Strange, Gilpin denies the notion that the nation state has been undermined by the rise of
international organizations and nongovernmental actors. While some research suggests that the market
is wrestling with the state for control over the commanding heights of the economy, Gilpin disagrees
and argues that the nation state continues to be the major actor in both domestic and international
affairs (Barma and Vogel, p. 535). The claim that the economic globalization and transnational
economic forces are declining the authority of the states is exaggerated, he says; for better or for
worse, this is still a state dominated world Barma and Vogel, p. 536). If there was an argument to be
made about the declining power of the states, it would be the decades prior to World War I when
markets were truly supreme and governments had little power over economic affairs (Barma and
Vogel, p. 537). As for the twentieth and twenty first centuries, states have pretty much remained a
major actor in the globalized economy. For example, while ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Essay about Descartes Theory of Substance Dualism
Descartes Theory of Substance Dualism
Throughout the history of man, philosophers have tried to come up with an explanation of where our
minds, or consciousness, came from and how we are able to have a nonphysical characteristic of
ourselves. Does our physical brain automatically give us nonphysical characteristics like feelings,
thoughts, and desires or is there something else there, the mind, that interacts with our bodies and
makes us feel, think, and desire? Also, is the mind the only nonphysical entity in our universe or do
other entities exist such as ghosts or souls? One man came up with a theory to explain the two
different properties in our universe in which he called Dualism. Hopefully with his theory of ... Show

Therefore, humans are composed of two types of substance: physical and nonphysical.
According to Descartes, our minds and bodies causally interact with one another almost all of the
time. Meaning that events and states in our mind can cause physical events in our bodies and vice
versa. For example, a tack puncturing your foot (a physical event) causes you to feel pain (a mental
event) and causes you to say ouch, (a physical event)
(Barcalow, pg. 72). As a result, the term Interactionism was used to explain the relation between the
physical and mental. Descartes theory of Substance Dualism was his best way of explaining human
life and how our minds are able to interact with our bodies. Of course, not everyone is going to agree
with Descartes theory. There are many objections one can make about Substance Dualism, but mainly
there are three. First of all, some believe causal interaction between the body and mind is a physical
phenomenon. For example, throwing a baseball is the result of one s arm being swung back in a
smooth motion and using force to release the ball (science has proven that force is physical). What
caused the arm to throw the baseball? The muscles in the arm contracted, thus the arm raised. The
electrical impulses that originated in the brain told the arm to throw the ball. Some people

not been a demand for everyone to pay attention to politics because people always have their own

that is important to understand. Many journalists and bloggers became more aware of politics and
want to know more about what political scientists actually know. This article also wants to inform
many people that political science is something that you can study over a period of time, which is the
real reason to pay attention to elections. Hans Noel came up with 10 different things that political

The Importance Of Parent Adolescent Sexual Communication
Let s Talk About Sex: The Importance of Parent Adolescent Sexual Communication Communication
between parents and adolescents is important when educating teens on how to practice safer sex. Roni
Caryn Rabin in her article, Why Parents Should Have the Sex Talk With Their Children, provides
evidence as to how and why these conversations are important for healthy adolescent sexual
development. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 60 percent of sexually
active high school students did not use any birth control the last time they had intercourse. This article
emphasizes that these numbers can be reduced if parents simply engage in a conversation with their
teens about sex. Furthermore, factors such as being uncomfortable or nervous about talking to their
parents and fears that parents will over react play a key role in why parents and their children do not
have a safe sex talk (Rabin, 2015). Over all, Rabin stresses that this topic is important to address
regularly in order to promote safe sex and healthy relationships in teens. However, after reviewing this
article, there are four aspects that must be acknowledged in order to educate parents on how to engage
in conversations about sex in the most effective way. First and foremost, Rabin (2015) states in her
article that teens who communicated with their parents about sex were more likely to communicate
with their sexual partners and more likely to delay sexual activity. However, in a 2007

Or should illegal aliens be treated just like any other patients by having a right to health care?

What the illegal aliens want are jobs that will potentially give them a higher wage in comparison to
the country they came from. To effectively weigh whether providing health care to immigrants should
be considered a right or privilege, one would have to consider how much they contribute to economic
growth. A Pew study from last year showed that undocumented immigrants add 600,000 to 700,000
new consumers to the economy every year. Since consumption makes up 70 percent of economic
activity in the U.S., this is important (and of course, more consumption means more sales tax
revenue). Immigration is also expected to account for one forth of the Census Bureau s estimated labor
force growth through 2012. Some economic estimates gauge that undocumented immigrants
contribute $22 billion, in total, to the economy each year a number that would increase if they were
given the opportunity to become legal (Karvounis, 2007). This evidence suggests that illegal aliens are
actually giving back to the nation by doing all of the dirty, low income jobs and are only using
approximately $11 billion in health care and they are contributing about $22 billion a year to the
economy. Although these illegals only using half of what they give, they contribute more then what
they use.

Protest Songs And Its Effect On Social Change
For many centuries, music has been an unwavering force in society, offering entertainment for various
ceremonies and events, while also providing an outlet for creative expression. Most people see the
entertainment factor in music, but fail to realize the power music has to influence social change. One
way that music inspires social change is through protest songs. Most songwriters agree that protest
songs are written because circumstances demand engagement and things can no longer be left unsaid
(Haslam). Protest songs have been prominent for centuries in the United States, but one decade that
they are closely associated with is the 1960s. This was a time when America was faced with much
controversy and division. The protest music performed by folk artist and social activist Peter Seeger
empowered oppressed individuals during the 1960s to stand against social norms by acknowledging
social issues in society, advocating his personal beliefs, and convincing his audience that it was
acceptable to have varying opinions. The 1960s were a time in history in which the United States was
filled with much disillusionment; however, the 1960s were a time of hope. It was a decade unlike any
other, where everyday individuals thought they could change the world and were willing to put
themselves in physical danger to see that change happen (Cassity 13). The 1960s offered disposition

They are old enough and mature enough to handle this kind of violence without bringing it to the real
world. The exaggerated violence in simulated games might be more violent than it needs to be, but it s
nothing players can t handle without getting themselves into trouble. In fact, sometimes violent games
seem to stop violence, as Evan Dashevsky states in his article, The crime rate in the US has sharply
decreased as video games have continually upped the viscera factor. If games were getting too real

Kilauea Volcanoe Essay examples
Kilauea Volcano
By: Jeremy Dodson
Located in the Pacific Ocean, Hawaii and the Hawaiian Islands are the cone shaped tops of gigantic
ocean volcanoes.
Located in the southeast region of the Island of Hawaii, Kilauea sits on the flank (or the side) of the
active Mauna Loa volcano, and is one of five shield volcanoes that together form the Island of Hawaii.
Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth, and it is the youngest. Kilauea stands just under
4,200 feet tall above sea level at its highest point.
The staff of the U.S. Geological Survey at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory currently lists Kilauea s
Volcano Alert Level as WATCH and its Aviation Color Code as ORANGE. Kilauea is studied and ...

This smog affects many areas of the Hawaiian Islands, including Oahu and Honolulu whenever winds
come out of the south or southeast.
The estimated age of the earliest above ground (subaerial) eruptions of Kilauea is between 50,000
100,000 years.
The last eruption began on January 3, 1983 to the present. During this time, the lava flows have
unfortunately caused destruction of nearly 200 houses, resurfaced over 13km of highway with lava,
destroyed the National Park visitor center, and a 700 year old Hawaiian Temple. It has also added new
coastline to the island. There are no signs that the current eruption is slowing or will end anytime
soon. Kilauea has little vegetation.
Kilauea has the volcano status of Historical. Kilauea has had 61 historical eruptions, not counting the
continuous lava lake activity in the crater. The oldest dated rocks from Kilauea are 23,000 years old.
The Island of Hawaii sits on (almost in the middle of) the Pacific Plate. The Pacific Plate is a giant
jigsaw piece of the Earth s crust that is slowly moving in a northwesterly direction. It moves about
four inches a year. There is a basically stationary hot spot deep within the Earth s mantle. Heat from
this hot spot makes molten lava and rock (magma) that rises through the Pacific Plate and erupts
continuously on the ocean floor. After thousands of eruptions and over many many years, an island
forms a rocky

Rama Vs Odyssey
Realism versus Perfection:
Throughout history, different cultures have created heroes as representations of the ideals that these
cultures value. Often times these heroes have very little or no flaws, such is the case with the Hindu
hero Rama. On the other hand, some heroes have many virtuous attributes to them, while still
containing flaws, creating a more realistic and achievable hero, such as with Odysseus. Both of these
heroes represent the principles that were valued from their respective cultures of origin; therefore, the
heroes themselves are representations of the society during the time of their (the heroes) creation.
These heroes serve as guides to how the people of their respective cultures try to lead their lives,
which makes Perfect heroes problematic for people who try to follow their actions. ... Show more

Although Odysseus and Rama are similar in the fact that they are both heroes who long to reunite with
their respective wives, the differences between them are clear. Odysseus is a very flawed character,
which allows modern readers to relate to him easier than Rama, who is nearly perfect in every aspect,
and serves more as an idealization of how to behave in Hindu culture, rather than a realistic and
relatable hero. Despite their differences, both heroes share a common journey. Odysseus s journey
takes place after the war, with Odysseus choosing to fight in the war for ten years, voluntarily leaving
his family behind. Likewise, Rama chose to accept his fourteen year exile out of respect to his father,
despite his family and community begging him to stay and rule as king. However, Odysseus causes
the prolonging of his return home, due to his arrogance after outsmarting Polyphemus, whereas
Ravana kidnapping Sita prolonged and increased the difficulty of Rama s exile. Another similarity
between the two stems from the divine forces that helped them along their journeys. Rama, being a
reincarnation of the god Vishnu, has a

The Creation Of Evil In Frankenstein And Mary Shelley s...
The Creation of Evil . The novel Frankenstein written by Mary Shelley explains many themes and
characters throughout Victor s life and his creation of the monster. In addition, the movie Mary
Shelley s Frankenstein directed by Kenneth Branagh also does the same, but includes a couple twists.
The novel first published in 1818, includes grammar and language from the 19th century. Written in
an older type of English allows for the reader to have a rough, but a more in depth reading of the book.
The movie made in 1994, uses more 20th century language and many filming techniques. Some actors
of the movie include Robert De Niro, who acts as the monster, Helena Bonham Carter plays as
Elizabeth and the director of the movie plays as Victor. Within both works they use different setting
locations, for example the North Arctic Ocean, London, the University of Ingolstadt and others.
Furthermore, the movie also uses these locations to keep the two in sync through the timeline and
events. Both works provide many similarities when it comes to themes. For example, both show how
society reacts to the monster, and the idea of revenge between Victor and his creation. To summarize
the two, in 1794, in the Arctic Sea, Captain Robert Walton is a man obsessed to reach the North Pole,
pushing his crew to exhaustion. In the movie, Walton s ship hits an iceberg and becomes stranded. In
the novel Walton and his crew become stranded because the boat can no longer push through the ice;
so the men

Still In The Closet
Social Justice
By:Yanna Rossiter
How many times have you heard someone was describing something as gay , or used the word fag to
talk about their friends when they are messing around. At NHS, I feel like I ve heard it a bit too many
times. I ve heard it shouted from across the hall, but some teachers tend not to care if there are any
repercussions. None of these students really know how this affects the people who actually are gay, or
still in the closet.. If you re in the LGBTQ Community, for me anyways, it hurts when someone yells
That s gay because I think, how so, how are these clothes gay, they didn t go the nerve racking choice
to tell their parents that they weren t like the other kids at school. Yes, they ve spent some time in the
closet, but it isn t the same. Students can feel ambushed by these words because people use them as an
insult. It is suppose to make the person they re telling feel bad about whatever they are being judged
about. How is that okay? What if someone is still in the closet, and you call their outfit gay, you re
saying you re outfit looks so bad, so I m going to call it gay. It s also the same with the word dyke
People feel like it s bad to be one, when really that person is just being themselves. They would feel
hurt and unwanted, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We see the judgement when a same sex couple is walking down the halls, with a smile on their face
because they re happy. Being with the person that actually makes them smile. Some of the couples
hide in the shadows or not even at school at all, because the looks they get when they do the same
thing as heterosexual relationships, it s a look of disgust and it shouldn t be that way. Is it okay to
judge a race, or even a sex. No and people have issues at this school about it, so how is it okay to do
the same exact thing to another group of people. It s

Self-Defense Legislation
Self defense is the right for an individual to use necessary force in order to defend oneself against an
unlawful force of another. Therefore, an act that is typically depicted as a crime is not punishable
under these circumstances. Joycelyn M. Pollock (2013) pointed out that, the right to protect oneself,
one s family, and one s castle is a time honored right that existed before the common law and was
recognized by it (P.101). Under common law, a criminal charge depended upon a showing that the
defendant believed force was necessary in order for self protection, upon reasonable grounds, the
threat was forthcoming, and the force was not excessively used (Pollock, 2013, 102). Today, self
defense elements are different in each state. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Correspondingly, in some statues an agency cannot arrest an individual for the use of force unless the
force used was determined unlawful. Therefore, the Stand your Ground laws have thoroughly
extended self defense rights. Some states contain Make My Day laws, which allow the use of deadly
force for the protection of property when an individual believes that force is necessary to prevent a
criminal felony (Pollock, 2013, 106). An individual is also allowed to use reasonable force even if the
user does not feel an immediate threat but reasonably believes a crime will occur. Originally, case law
prohibited the use of weapons due to the possibility of hurting innocent individuals such as a police
officer trying to legally enter the premises. Nevertheless, Stand your Ground laws have allowed the
use of deadly force in order to protect against all possible felonies. The extension and initiation of
various self defense laws have caused nationwide controversy. Advocates state that law abiding
individuals should be allowed to protect themselves unlawful force without the possibility of being
criminally or civilly charged. Correspondingly, the Second Amendment to the United States
Constitution grants the federal right to bear arms regardless of militia stature and upholds the natural
rights of self defense. Likewise, legislators argue that individuals visiting or residing in the United
States contain the right to remain secure in

  • 3. Authentically Portrayed Women in Literature Essay Leo Tolstoy s Anna Karenina; Margaret Mitchell s Gone with the Wind; Tennessee Williams A Streetcar Named Desire. Upon first glance, these classics of literary legend appear to have nothing in common. However, looking closer, one concept unites these three works of art. At the center of each story stands a woman an authentically portrayed woman. A woman with strengths, flaws, desires, memories, hopes, and dreams. Tolstoy s Anna Karenina, Mitchell s Scarlett O Hara, and Williams Blanche DuBois are beautiful, intelligent, sophisticated women: strong yet fragile, brazen yet subtle, carnal yet pure. Surviving literature that depicts women in such a realistic and moving fashion is still very rare today, and each piece of that unique genre ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Indeed, the two sisters believed that the beautiful pure freedom of a woman was infinitely more wonderful than any sexual love (Lawrence, Lady 1994 7). The author maintains this stance on women s independence, but he tweaks it slightly over the course of the story. Connie marries Clifford Chatterley, an aristocrat and owner of the estate Wragby Hall, who is paralyzed from the waist down because of a war injury, rendering him impotent. Clifford devotes himself to his work writing and Connie remains ignored. A Sleeping Beauty, she has not awakened to life (Squires in Lawrence, Lady 1994 xxi). This lack of connection with her husband fans the flame of Connie s sexual inquisitiveness, first ignited in an erotic encounter, when she spies on Mellors bathing naked. In Sons and Lovers, Mrs. Gertrude Morel s personality is a near polar opposite to Connie s. Whereas Connie is earthy, sensual, and physical, Mrs. Morel is proud, unyielding, and intellectual (Murfin 34). She is associated with control, consciousness, coolness, and colors suggesting purity (Murfin 38). In a letter to a friend, Lawrence himself wrote the simplest explanation of Mrs. Morel s role in the novel: The son loves the mother all the sons hate and are jealous of the father. • 5. Catullus Before Death Do Us Analysis Until Death Do Us Part After a long and perilous journey from Verona, Catullus had finally arrived at Rome. As he stood by the entrance to that magnificent and intimidating city, his emotions overtook him like a tempestuous storm. He had left his family and his filial duties in order to pursue a glorious career in his vocation and avocation: poetry. For Catullus, the small town of Verona was a cultural wasteland; it suffered from a paucity of playwrights, poets, and prose writers. Only in Rome, with its diverse and cultured populace, could he truly fulfill his dreams of becoming one of Latin s greatest poets. Thus, as he stood by the gates of Rome, he felt a mixture of feelings; excitement and apprehension at the future lying beyond the entranceway s ivory veneer, and a sense of sadness and melancholia at the past he was forever abandoning. Catullus had not yet taken two full strides in Rome before being suddenly accosted by a pulchritudinous young lady. Introducing herself as Lesbia, the voluptuous woman graciously invited Catullus into her house for a meal. Leavis states that perhaps the persecuting aspect of their way of life was peculiarly present to Hawthorne because of the witch hanging judge and the Quaker whipping Major among his ancestors (30). This is a reference to one instance of historical allusion in Nathaniel Hawthorne s Young Goodman Brown. This essay will explore a variety of historical incidences referred to in this short story. And it was I that brought your father a pitch pine knot, kindled at my own hearth, to set fire to an Indian village, in King Philip s War. They were my good friends, both; and many a pleasant walk have we had along this path, and returned merrily after midnight. Notice the allusion to the historical episode from Hawthorne s life mentioned by Leavis and Swisher above. In addition to the Quaker incident from the author s past, there is also the tragedy of the witch hanging judge in his past, also mentioned by Leavis and Swisher above. Wagenknecht states in Nathaniel Hawthorne that, of the three Salem women mentioned in Young Goodman Brown, two of these were hanged; all three were accused in 1692 (60). Wagenknecht continues: When the devil speaks of his intimacy with Brown s ancestors and of their cruelty toward Quakers and Indians, Hawthorne is clearly thinking of his own forbears (60). Thus it is seen that the historicity of these short story episodes is well established. A proper, accurate interpretation of Young Goodman Brown depends on the reader s knowledge of an historical occurrence from June of 1692, when a group of important Boston clergymen issued a statement which declared that it was an undoubted and notorious thing, that a demon may, by God s permission, appear, even to ill purposes, in the shape of an innocent, yea, and a virtuous man (60). The first step is to die, as we believe that Saints are in heaven with God. This means at some point after thier death, word of mouth from someone who knew the potential saint, or a member of the religous community asks their local bishop to begin the cause for canonization. As soon as the bishop agrees, the potential Saint receives the title, Servant Of God. Next, a formal review is undertaken, guided by historians and theologians; the bishop may decide to send the cause to Rome, at the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. This department determines if the potential saint has shown heroic sanctity in their lifetime, worthy of imitation. To illustrate my point, did they live a life marked by virtuous actions? As such, states are struggling to write effective legislation and create adequate testing and identification to address this new industry. However, compliance is just one area of risk management faced by the marijuana edibles industry. Just as any other manufacturer of a food product, edibles manufacturers face many hazard risks in the operation of their business (Frosch, 2014). The comparison is ironic since Minnie Foster s spirit is isolated and has been contained in a unpleasant marriage. Glaspell paint quickly establishes that the canary symbolizes the particular cheerful side of Mrs. Wright destroyed by the oppression of her marriage. (Sutten 170 178) Canaries are full of life and brightness. After her marriage the oppression of her husband has killed her cheerful side and raped her of her life. The canary is known for its beautiful voice. The bird s song is a replacement to the silence of a marriage without children. Love, particularly maternal is associated with sound and in its absace with silence ( Makowsky 61) Minnie is a caretaker with no children to take care of. Beyond being isolated she is lonely and deprived from her true desires. The bird just like herself has been trapped and condemned to live in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. The Role Of Water Security In The Jordan River Basin Abstract The scarcity, depletion and polluting of water in one of the world s driest regions, is a problem that has perplexed the nations of the Middle East for decades. The riparian states of the Jordan River Basin include Israel, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. These states are in a constant struggle over securing water rights for their respective states. The conflict over water is also overshadowed by the Arab Israeli issues and the subsequent territorial questions. While territory is often at the forefront of the issues, securing water has also become a contributing factor in the conflicts of the past, and will continue in the future. Choices of conflict or cooperation will have to be made, given the diminishing amounts of water available. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many countries are also highly dependent on water that originates outside their borders; the water diversion provided by dams for countries that are downstream exacerbates an already serious problem. The diversion of river systems is an area of international concern, the nature and extent of such interdependency is already extensive: 145 countries share over 261 international river basin. As demand increases, and as indigenous sources of water become fully utilized or exhausted, the only alternatives are likely to be international (Dolatyar, 2006). Ironically, the very solution of one country s scarcity, plunges another into water shortage, this is the reason why water security is one of the most crucial foreign policy considerations of a globally connected economic and political atmosphere. Water as a source of conflict When one thinks of turmoil in the Middle East, oil is often the first thought, however, water has begun to be a problematic area, both internal and international. However, the cause for water scarcity does not only depend on conditions within its borders (Giordano, Giordano Wolf , 2004). Israel s water source comes from the Jordan River, an elongated valley in the central Middle East, and is shared with Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Palestine (Lowi, 1995). Now the concern is if the current economic model growth is reasonable in a world with limited energy resources. This has lead to more research in other forms of resources of energy. Now we have other unconventional resources such as wind, solar, geothermal, water, and so on. Energy demand is set to double by 2050 (Beckman, 2013). Therefore, greenhouse gases could double by 2050 as well. Hence, renewable energy is vital. However seen as fossil fuel is still the dominate source of energy, it makes it the current economic model growth rate somewhat unreasonable. Acceleration rate in policy, technological innovation, and consumer expectations are making the energy market increasingly complex. We would need innovation, incentives, investments and stronger technical standards to reduce the world s energy intensity. When the industrial revolution began, the amount of carbon in Britain in form of coal was as much as the carbon in Saudi Arabia in from of oil. The claim that the economic globalization and transnational economic forces are declining the authority of the states is exaggerated, he says; for better or for worse, this is still a state dominated world Barma and Vogel, p. 536). Therefore, humans are composed of two types of substance: physical and nonphysical. According to Descartes, our minds and bodies causally interact with one another almost all of the time. Meaning that events and states in our mind can cause physical events in our bodies and vice versa. For example, a tack puncturing your foot (a physical event) causes you to feel pain (a mental event) and causes you to say ouch, (a physical event) (Barcalow, pg. 72). As a result, the term Interactionism was used to explain the relation between the physical and mental. Descartes theory of Substance Dualism was his best way of explaining human life and how our minds are able to interact with our bodies. Of course, not everyone is going to agree with Descartes theory. There are many objections one can make about Substance Dualism, but mainly there are three. First of all, some believe causal interaction between the body and mind is a physical phenomenon. For example, throwing a baseball is the result of one s arm being swung back in a smooth motion and using force to release the ball (science has proven that force is physical). What caused the arm to throw the baseball? The muscles in the arm contracted, thus the arm raised. The electrical impulses that originated in the brain told the arm to throw the ball. Some people ... The Importance Of Parent Adolescent Sexual Communication Let s Talk About Sex: The Importance of Parent Adolescent Sexual Communication Communication between parents and adolescents is important when educating teens on how to practice safer sex. Roni Caryn Rabin in her article, Why Parents Should Have the Sex Talk With Their Children, provides evidence as to how and why these conversations are important for healthy adolescent sexual development. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 60 percent of sexually active high school students did not use any birth control the last time they had intercourse. This article emphasizes that these numbers can be reduced if parents simply engage in a conversation with their teens about sex. Furthermore, factors such as being uncomfortable or nervous about talking to their parents and fears that parents will over react play a key role in why parents and their children do not have a safe sex talk (Rabin, 2015). Over all, Rabin stresses that this topic is important to address regularly in order to promote safe sex and healthy relationships in teens. However, after reviewing this article, there are four aspects that must be acknowledged in order to educate parents on how to engage in conversations about sex in the most effective way. First and foremost, Rabin (2015) states in her article that teens who communicated with their parents about sex were more likely to communicate with their sexual partners and more likely to delay sexual activity. What the illegal aliens want are jobs that will potentially give them a higher wage in comparison to the country they came from. To effectively weigh whether providing health care to immigrants should be considered a right or privilege, one would have to consider how much they contribute to economic growth. A Pew study from last year showed that undocumented immigrants add 600,000 to 700,000 new consumers to the economy every year. Since consumption makes up 70 percent of economic activity in the U.S., this is important (and of course, more consumption means more sales tax revenue). Immigration is also expected to account for one forth of the Census Bureau s estimated labor force growth through 2012. Some economic estimates gauge that undocumented immigrants contribute $22 billion, in total, to the economy each year a number that would increase if they were given the opportunity to become legal (Karvounis, 2007). This evidence suggests that illegal aliens are actually giving back to the nation by doing all of the dirty, low income jobs and are only using approximately $11 billion in health care and they are contributing about $22 billion a year to the economy. It has also added new coastline to the island. There are no signs that the current eruption is slowing or will end anytime soon. Kilauea has little vegetation. Kilauea has the volcano status of Historical. Kilauea has had 61 historical eruptions, not counting the continuous lava lake activity in the crater. The oldest dated rocks from Kilauea are 23,000 years old. The Island of Hawaii sits on (almost in the middle of) the Pacific Plate. The Pacific Plate is a giant jigsaw piece of the Earth s crust that is slowly moving in a northwesterly direction. It moves about four inches a year. There is a basically stationary hot spot deep within the Earth s mantle. Heat from this hot spot makes molten lava and rock (magma) that rises through the Pacific Plate and erupts continuously on the ocean floor. After thousands of eruptions and over many many years, an island forms a rocky

  • 44. Rama Vs Odyssey Realism versus Perfection: Throughout history, different cultures have created heroes as representations of the ideals that these cultures value. Often times these heroes have very little or no flaws, such is the case with the Hindu hero Rama. On the other hand, some heroes have many virtuous attributes to them, while still containing flaws, creating a more realistic and achievable hero, such as with Odysseus. Both of these heroes represent the principles that were valued from their respective cultures of origin; therefore, the heroes themselves are representations of the society during the time of their (the heroes) creation. These heroes serve as guides to how the people of their respective cultures try to lead their lives, which makes Perfect heroes problematic for people who try to follow their actions. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although Odysseus and Rama are similar in the fact that they are both heroes who long to reunite with their respective wives, the differences between them are clear. Odysseus is a very flawed character, which allows modern readers to relate to him easier than Rama, who is nearly perfect in every aspect, and serves more as an idealization of how to behave in Hindu culture, rather than a realistic and relatable hero. Despite their differences, both heroes share a common journey. Odysseus s journey takes place after the war, with Odysseus choosing to fight in the war for ten years, voluntarily leaving his family behind. Likewise, Rama chose to accept his fourteen year exile out of respect to his father, despite his family and community begging him to stay and rule as king. However, Odysseus causes the prolonging of his return home, due to his arrogance after outsmarting Polyphemus, whereas Ravana kidnapping Sita prolonged and increased the difficulty of Rama s exile. Another similarity between the two stems from the divine forces that helped them along their journeys. Rama, being a reincarnation of the god Vishnu, has a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. The Creation Of Evil In Frankenstein And Mary Shelley s... The Creation of Evil . The novel Frankenstein written by Mary Shelley explains many themes and characters throughout Victor s life and his creation of the monster. In addition, the movie Mary Shelley s Frankenstein directed by Kenneth Branagh also does the same, but includes a couple twists. The novel first published in 1818, includes grammar and language from the 19th century. Written in an older type of English allows for the reader to have a rough, but a more in depth reading of the book. The movie made in 1994, uses more 20th century language and many filming techniques. Some actors of the movie include Robert De Niro, who acts as the monster, Helena Bonham Carter plays as Elizabeth and the director of the movie plays as Victor. Within both works they use different setting locations, for example the North Arctic Ocean, London, the University of Ingolstadt and others. Furthermore, the movie also uses these locations to keep the two in sync through the timeline and events. Both works provide many similarities when it comes to themes. For example, both show how society reacts to the monster, and the idea of revenge between Victor and his creation. To summarize the two, in 1794, in the Arctic Sea, Captain Robert Walton is a man obsessed to reach the North Pole, pushing his crew to exhaustion. In the movie, Walton s ship hits an iceberg and becomes stranded. In the novel Walton and his crew become stranded because the boat can no longer push through the ice; so the men ... • 46. Still In The Closet Social Justice By:Yanna Rossiter How many times have you heard someone was describing something as gay , or used the word fag to talk about their friends when they are messing around. At NHS, I feel like I ve heard it a bit too many times. I ve heard it shouted from across the hall, but some teachers tend not to care if there are any repercussions. None of these students really know how this affects the people who actually are gay, or still in the closet.. If you re in the LGBTQ Community, for me anyways, it hurts when someone yells That s gay because I think, how so, how are these clothes gay, they didn t go the nerve racking choice to tell their parents that they weren t like the other kids at school. Yes, they ve spent some time in the closet, but it isn t the same. Students can feel ambushed by these words because people use them as an insult. It is suppose to make the person they re telling feel bad about whatever they are being judged about. How is that okay? What if someone is still in the closet, and you call their outfit gay, you re saying you re outfit looks so bad, so I m going to call it gay. It s also the same with the word dyke People feel like it s bad to be one, when really that person is just being themselves. They would feel hurt and unwanted, ... Being with the person that actually makes them smile. Some of the couples hide in the shadows or not even at school at all, because the looks they get when they do the same thing as heterosexual relationships, it s a look of disgust and it shouldn t be that way. Is it okay to judge a race, or even a sex. No and people have issues at this school about it, so how is it okay to do the same exact thing to another group of people. It s ... • 47. Self-Defense Legislation Self defense is the right for an individual to use necessary force in order to defend oneself against an unlawful force of another. Therefore, an act that is typically depicted as a crime is not punishable under these circumstances. Joycelyn M. Pollock (2013) pointed out that, the right to protect oneself, one s family, and one s castle is a time honored right that existed before the common law and was recognized by it (P.101). Under common law, a criminal charge depended upon a showing that the defendant believed force was necessary in order for self protection, upon reasonable grounds, the threat was forthcoming, and the force was not excessively used (Pollock, 2013, 102). Today, self defense elements are different in each state. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Correspondingly, in some statues an agency cannot arrest an individual for the use of force unless the force used was determined unlawful. Therefore, the Stand your Ground laws have thoroughly extended self defense rights. Some states contain Make My Day laws, which allow the use of deadly force for the protection of property when an individual believes that force is necessary to prevent a criminal felony (Pollock, 2013, 106). An individual is also allowed to use reasonable force even if the user does not feel an immediate threat but reasonably believes a crime will occur. Originally, case law prohibited the use of weapons due to the possibility of hurting innocent individuals such as a police officer trying to legally enter the premises. Nevertheless, Stand your Ground laws have allowed the use of deadly force in order to protect against all possible felonies. The extension and initiation of various self defense laws have caused nationwide controversy. Advocates state that law abiding individuals should be allowed to protect themselves unlawful force without the possibility of being criminally or civilly charged. Correspondingly, the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution grants the federal right to bear arms regardless of militia stature and upholds the natural rights of self defense. Likewise, legislators argue that individuals visiting or residing in the United States contain the right to remain secure in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
