WHAT IS STRESS?
Stress is the unconscious preparation to fight or flee that a person experiences when faced with any demand. Stress does not necessarily have to be destructive. A stressor is the person or the event that triggers the stress response. Distress refers to the adverse psychological, physical, behavioral, and organizational consequences that may arise as a result of stressful events.

Four Approaches to Stress

The Homeostatic/Medical Approach
Walter Cannon was the physiologist who discovered the stress response, and he initially named it "the emergency response,” or "the militaristic response." A steady state balance, or equilibrium, is homeostasis, which is upset when a person faces an external demand. The body has natural processes to keep it in homeostasis.

The Cognitive Appraisal Approach
Richard Lazarus made contributions related to the psychology of stress. What is stressful for one person may not be stressful for another. Stress is a result of the person-environment interaction. The person's cognitive appraisal of a situation as stressful is a key part of the stress process.

social life as much as before the injury. This puts her in the GOOD RECOVERY
category
A. Upper Good:
Return to normal life and NO current problems relating to the injury that
affect daily life (dizziness, headache, and sensitivity to noise or light, slowness,
memory failure, concentration problems)
B. Lower Good:
Return to normal life BUT current problems relating to the injury that affect
daily life (dizziness, headache, and sensitivity to noise or light, slowness,
memory failure, concentration problems)
Social activities: Resumed at least half as often as pre-injury
Disruption or Strain: Occasional (less than once per week)
She does suffer from headaches and occasional strain, which leads to Lower
Good Recovery rating on the GOS-E.

2. Additional Comment
The occupational status refers to the ability to
do rather than to actually do.
If someone is not working due to reasons
unrelated to brain injury, but could work, that
should be rated as GOOD RECOVERY.
In people without work or study, household
responsibilities and social activities are good
indicators for comparison between pre-injury
and post-injury status.
