Equality Expectations And Envy By Alain De Botton

Equality, Expectations and Envy In chapter two of Status Anxiety, Equality, Expectations and Envy ,
Alain de Botton explains to readers that perturbation about self image is caused by feelings of
inadequacy, which are usually self inflicted. Envy occurs when a person compares themselves to the
people around them. Botton contends, our judgment of what constitutes an appropriate limit . . .on
wealth or esteem is never arrived at independently. . . ;it is formed when a person compares their
surrounding with a reference group (25). People are compelled to do better because of jealousy and
feelings of insufficiency. For hundreds of years, there was the thought that ... Show more content on

Even the equal rights revolution in America still didn t prevent the resentment felt by most. In fact, it
made it worse. Tocqueville noticed that when people are set to the same level, the slightest variation is
easily spotted (32). He asserted that, when people fail to rise to who they think they can be, it causes
them to feel self hatred and underachievement (33). The success stories of others who have risen up
from the dirt do not help the esteem of the people who think what and how much they have done in
life is insignificant (41). William James, looked at the psychology behind the sociological problems
created by expectations. James wrote an equation to describe self esteem, which is equal to the ratio of
success rate to perceptions of ability. The equation suggests there are two ways to raise self esteem:
one, work harder and achieve more, or two, want to achieve less things (36). Botton s interpretation of
James s ideas signify Rousseau s argument that we may be happy enough with little if little is what we
have come to expect, and we may be miserable with much if we have been taught to desire everything,

Social Aspects Of Social Norm
A social norm that strikes my fascination is in the initial actions, responses, and facial expressions
individuals convey when greeting other people, whether a person is acknowledging a friend, co
worker, family member, or a stranger, one would think that each person would greet everyone in
somewhat the same manner due to the nature of one s personality and regardless of their relationship
to that individual. I had the assumption that when people have a very bubbly and outgoing personality
they would greet everyone in the same vivacious way. Likewise, when individuals are more reserved
and less likely to take the initiative in introducing themselves to a stranger, I figured they would be
more shy and quiet in their responses. So what I wanted to do was count to three out loud before
saying, Hello back to my friends, co workers, family members, and strangers greetings and see how
they would react to this social norm violation. Therefore, the social norm I chose to break was failing
to respond directly to a person s greeting in the normal response rate and additionally counting out
loud to three before replying.
To get a fairly accurate conclusion of my findings, I responded to sixteen greetings in this peculiar
way. I gathered the reactions from four friends, four co workers, four family members (although three
were over the phone), and four random strangers who came up to talk to me. Of the twelve individuals
I know personally, all of their personalities vary in the

NUCLEAR ARMS RACE IN SOUTH ASIAAND ITS
IMPACT ON REGIONAL SECURITY
INTRODUCTION
1. The nuclear age opened during World War II with a blinding light; a deafening roars fire and blood.
The world s first nuclear bomb exploded at Alamogordo on 16 July 1945. It had a very complex
history. The sensational discovery of nuclear fission first came in Germany in December 1938. British
research then showed that the manufacture of a nuclear weapon was almost possible. The American
technological, scientific and industrial effort in the Manhattan Project , that actually built the bomb. At
last initial test was carried out in the wastes of New Mexico desert. The American first used nuclear

Consequently the concern about India surfaces more strongly in the minds of the NNWS than any
other state. Besides, India is so close to each one of them in terms of shared history, inheritance and
culture that one cannot help but recognize her overwhelming influence. For them, to divorce the past,
which all these countries shared with India, is to cut themselves off from their roots.
6. None of the NNWS of South Asia matches the Indian power capabilities with respect to any of the
attributes of power. The power difference is so enormous that no NNWS can either singly or
collectively encounter the Indian pressure and threat. Therefore, both militarily and economically the
states are extremely vulnerable vis à vis India. All these issues bear out the fact that India, a single
overwhelming factor, and looms very large in the minds of the small states of South Asia when
matters not only of external relations but also of domestic importance are considered.
7. Pakistan is also an important actor in the region and appears big in the mind of NNWS too. But they
do not so far perceive it as a threat. Nevertheless, when India and to some extent Pakistan acquire
huge armed forces, with the latest combat aircraft, tanks, guns, a vast industrial establishment, a
nuclear capability and even a nuclear power submarine then the smaller countries of south Asia cannot

What Is The Central Idea Of The Wife s Story
The central idea of the short story, The Wife s Story, by Ursula Le Guin, is a wolf who finds out she is
the wife of a werewolf. To support this the author states, I saw him, I had to see him, my own dear
love, turned into the hateful one (LeGuin 7, lines 95 96). This quote shows the wife finding out about
her husband s curse, which is the central idea. The character vs. character conflict of the family
finding out about the husband and the character vs. self conflict of the husband changing into a human
and or wolf helps develop the central idea because, without these conflicts there would be no story. In
the short story, The Wife s Story, by Ursula LeGuin, there are many different forms of conflict. Some
examples of those are, character vs. character when the family finds out about the husband being a
werewolf, and character vs. self with the husband dealing with him being a werewolf and changing
between man and wolf. To support this the author states, I saw him, I had to see him, my own dear
love, turned into the hateful one (LeGuin 7, lines 95 96). This quote shows the conflict of character vs.
character when the family finds out about the husband. One other example of conflict in the ... Show

The Classic Text Of Power And Interdependence
International politics is simply defined as the academic principle which deals with the practical
realities of a state s interaction with another state or several other states. This essay will outline how
the classic text of Power and interdependence has shaped and continues to shape how we think about
international politics. Power and interdependence, published and authored by Robert Keohane and
Joseph Nye in 1977, was widely regarded as an influential book within the study of international
politics. The authors wanted to challenge the fundamental assumptions of traditional and structural
realism which at the time, focused on military and economic capabilities to identify state behaviour.

Power and interdependence continue to shape international politics through the introduction of the
new school of thought in the study of international relations of neoliberalism. Neoliberalism refers to a
school of thought which assumes that states are concerned with absolute gains rather than relative
gains to other states. Neoliberalism alongside neorealism is one of the most influential contemporary
approaches to international relations.
Keohane and Nye classic text of Power and Interdependence continues to shape how we think about

international relations, known as Liberalism. Liberalism is a theory of both governments within states

Brewing excellence, One cup at a time.
Keurig in Dutch means excellence. It is the leading single cup brewing system in North America. The
U.S. annual per capita consumption of coffee was estimated to be 424 servings, which included in
home and out of home roast and ground, instant, and ready to drink
(bottled/canned) coffee.2
The total coffee market in 2008 was estimated to be 1.8 billion pounds, or $19.3 billion. 3
While specialty coffee was only about 17 percent of total domestic coffee consumption by volume, the
sector had grown to over half the value of the U.S. coffee industry. 5

I Used To Tell You Analysis
Poetry during the Roman empire played a prevalent role in society along with what was being
discussed and studied around the cities under their rule. However, what is less known are the roles
society and the people played, in what type of poetry, language, and tone were used. Latin poetry,
through symbolism and humanity s ideology, represents the evolution of the Roman era and
government. Latin literature leaves behind a lasting legacy of the culture of ancient Rome. Some of
the earliest works are historical epics telling of the early military history of Rome, followed by
comedies, histories and tragedies. The comedies were the earliest as the Roman empire was strong and
they could have fun because there was nothing to worry about. The tragedies were written during the
collapse of the Roman empire. This is an example of how the people and situations surrounding the

Physician-Assisted Suicide Essay
Is the role of a medical professional to ensure the well being of their patients, or to assist them in
ending their lives? Many people may believe that physicians would never perform the latter, but in
actuality one practice does so. Physician assisted suicide is the intentional ending of one s life brought
on by lethal substances prescribed by a doctor. In the majority of cases, the patient is terminally ill and
simply does not desire to live any longer. Their physician provides the medication necessary to end
their life. Many supporters aver that this practice is merely an act of compassion as terminally ill
persons may suffer extreme pain that eradicates any will to live. They also assert that the decision to
die is of the patient s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Joe Messerli, Assisting in suicides would be a violation of that oath, and it would lead to
a weakening of doctor patient trust (3). If doctors violate the oath, especially the above stated portions,
patients may be inclined to question what other standards of medicine are being breached. Assisted
suicides contravene medical ethics, as evidenced by the multiple violations of the Hippocratic Oath.
Furthermore, the practice of assisted suicide has a significant possibility of being abused. Assisted
suicides are designed to allow those who are seriously ill and suffer from extreme pain to easily end
their lives (Braddock and Tenelli 1). Those who lack support from members of their family or friends
may feel worthless and hence may desire to end their lives (Pretzer 2). If the patient has no loved ones
to confide to and receive support from, they may feel as if no one cares and therefore no reason to live
exists. Since assisted suicides are unregulated, doctors may allow patients wishing to die for
subordinate reasons, such as the one previously stated, instead of suffering reasons to commit suicide.
Moreover, Patients who want to die for psychological or emotional reasons could convince doctors to
help them end their lives (Messerli 3). As stated before, assisted suicides are not meant to allow those
with emotional or mental problems to end their lives. If someone has such problems, they should

Implementing Job Analysis Components For Recruitment,...
Organizations have recently been investing greater capital and time into human resources seeing as it
impacts companies presently more than it has previously. With the focus on human resources,
companies can gain a competitive advantage by maintaining sustainability, as well as solving
challenges on a global and technological level. Second Dimension International (SDI) Marketing has
recently faced issues affecting their intangible assets that are detrimental to the company s

with recruitment, training, communication, and retention for SDI. SDI has been in operation for over

As long as SDI continues to receive contracts from recognized companies, their economic growth will
continue to rise. However, the continuation of contracts will only be plausible if the issues and
subsequent recommendations presented will be initiated and executed. When a particular market or
industry experiences sudden growth, it is difficult for companies to immediately adapt to the changes
in order to be efficient and effective. With companies spending more of their capital on providing an
experience for their audience, SDI is a company who must adapt to these changes proficiently.
Unfortunately, there are still opportunities for the marketing firm to strengthen and grow. SDI s
intangible assets including human capital pose a threat to the company s sustainability, as they are
vital to a company s competitive advantage. The company s main drawback is their inability to
manage their talent in terms of attracting, retaining, and developing. This not only increases SDI s
recruitment and training costs but it also effects employee morale and engagement. Globalization is
now present now more than ever, as it is the international amalgamation of people, cultures, and
companies, derived from international exchanges mainly aided from technology. Globalization makes
it easier for companies to enter and compete in foreign markets. As a result of abundant competition, it
is crucial for companies to enter

Theme Of War In A Separate Peace
The beginning of a friendship is the beginning of keenness, jealousy, and often times hatred. One may
become naive in the course of friendship and never realize by the end that a friend may become an
enemy. In A Separate Peace by John Knowles this is just the case, a friendship that consists of two
complete polar opposites, Gene and Finny, one athletic the other a brainiac. Gene and Finny go to
Devon School and through thick and thin these two have stuck together, however during the summer
into junior year their relationship hits some turbulence. John Knowles embodies the reality of war
within the relationship of Gene and Finny, as well as, how the fear of war, surroundings of war, and
violence can affect several relationships.

Knowles here draws a point that conflicts in oneself can affect what is occurring externally, because of
ignorance the consequences extended beyond reach.
Furthermore, Gene does not simply see Finny as a friend but a partner in crime. Finny trapped me
again in his strongest trap, that is, I suddenly became his collaborator ( Knowles 1959). Gene and
Finny are allies, it is them against the rest of the world, Knowles is highlighting the fact that although
these two are friends Finny can manipulate Gene in any which way he chooses making them moreso
enemies. Gene is blinded by Finny s wit and charming manner, but the surroundings in Devon have an
equally heavy effect on their relationship. ii. Devon School is surrounded by

Benefits Of Learning Outside The Classroom
There is no doubt that learning outside the classroom should be compulsory for all schools. Many of
my own memories from Primary School are those in which I spent outside of the classroom making
daisy chains and learning about birds at a local park. Nowadays, children are losing the opportunity to
explore their natural world and have fun outside as advances in technology have caused them to play
games on their tablets or iPads and the increase of cars means that it is safer for them to play inside.
Many children do not go outside at all, apart from when they are at school, therefore it is extremely
important that they are given as many opportunities as possible during the school day to have
enjoyable experiences outside of the classroom.
Grigg and Lewis (2016, p. 19) define learning outside the classroom as children learning about people,
their heritage and the natural environment, largely through play and first hand experiences, in a wide
range of contexts beyond the classroom. Learning outside the classroom enables teachers to bring the
curricula alive by integrating the school grounds and the local landscape into their teaching (Beames
et al., 2012). It is important that children are given more opportunities to explore the natural world as
there is no doubt that there are many benefits to outdoor learning. Furthermore, according to the
Learning Outside the Classroom Manifesto:
Every young person should experience the world beyond the classroom as an essential part of learning
and personal development, whatever their age, ability or circumstances.
(Department of Education and Skills, 2006, p.2)
The Council for Learning Outside the Classroom (2017) believes that outdoor learning is a powerful
tool that is proven to raise achievement, improve social, emotional and personal development and
contributes to the health and well being of children and young people. There is no doubt that children
will learn better if they are given space to discover and explore for themselves. The Northern Ireland
Curriculum: Primary (2007, p.44) states that outdoor learning has an important role in the emotional
development of children where they are free to run, shout and play exuberantly. Children can learn

Introduction The 21st century rapidly changed society putting forth new opportunities and demands in
a quest for a better future. With these elaborate changes particularly regarding the current
sophistication of technology, the workplace has also been propelling forward particularly focusing on
the way in which they are governed. An organisational structure is the process of arranging people and
other resources to work together to accomplish a goal (Schermerhorn, 2011). However, what happens
when there is no organisational structure? This is the theme of the Valve Steams Ahead case study in

However, the Valve Steams Ahead case study shows that Valve Software does not have an
organisational chart or training programs for new employees. They are simply given the staff
handbook that is administered to each new employee. This handbook describes how the structure
works, picking your own projects, office hours, peer reviews, steps taken after your first 6 months,
hiring new staff and the weaknesses of the company (Handbook for New Employees). This lack of
structure within the company makes it hard for people to develop mentors and become accustomed to
the social aspects of the company which is only translated through existing employees. This affects the
hiring of new staff as some talented people who are perfect for the organisation prefer to work within
a formal organisational structure. Recommendations In order for Valve Software to improve their
hiring of new staff and the initial training and development of employees, a few steps must be taken
which are modified from formal organisational structures. Firstly, regarding the hiring of new staff,
standardised personality testing should become a part of the day to day hiring procedures. Personality

and co workers within the company. With an organisational structure such as the one at Valve

Food is something essential to the life of a human. Humans have come so far from when they would

Personal Note On Sexual Violence

Assignment Turnitin Week 3
Identify and briefly describe the two specific types of individual, couple, and/or family crisis
situations you have selected.
In the assignment application, I have identified partner violence and lethality as the two types of crisis
situations to discuss about. Partner violence may occur in three different forms. First, Physical
violence which involves intentional use of physical force with the aim of causing harm, injury,
disability or death. Physical violence may also involve activities such as biting, slapping, choking,
punching, burning, using a weapon to inflict pain, shoving, throwing as well as using restrains on one
body. Secondly, Sexual violence which generally refers to involuntary sexual act in which a person is
physically compelled or coerced to engage against their will. This violence does no necessary require
sexual intimacy and can occur between same sex couples and heterosexual couples (Baldry Winkel,
2008). This may occur in three main ways: By use of excessive physical force to compel an individual
to engage into a sexual act which is contrary to his or her will, forcible sexual act to a victim who is
unable to resist or understand the nature of the situation in order communicate his /her unwillingness
to engage in the sexual act and finally the abusive sexual contact (Garcia McManimon, 2010). Thirdly,

that. The Mapp v. Ohio case originated in Cleveland and concerned a situation in which police officers

The Tragic Hero Of Marcus Junius Brutus Minor Essay
Marina Senseney

Tragic hero
Marcus Junius Brutus Minor was the son of Marcus Junius Brutus Maior and Servilia Caepionis. His
father was killed by Pompey the Great in dubious circumstances after he had taken part in the
rebellion of Lepidus; his mother was the half sister of Cato the Younger, and later Julius Caesar s
mistress. Some sources refer to the possibility of Caesar being his real father, despite Caesar s being
only 15 years old when Brutus was born. Brutus uncle, Quintus Servilius Caepio, adopted him in
about 59 BC, and Brutus was known officially for a time as Quintus Servilius Caepio Brutus before he
reverted to using his birth name. Following Caesar s assassination in 44 BC, Brutus revived his
adoptive name in order to illustrate his links to another famous tyrannicide, Gaius Servilius Ahala,
from whom he was descended. Brutus held his uncle in high regard and his political career started
when he became an assistant to Cato, during his governorship of Cyprus. During this time, he enriched
himself by lending money at high rates of interest. Brutus was also active in the province of Cilicia, in
the year before Cicero was proconsul there; Cicero documents how Brutus profited from
moneylending to the provincials in his Letters. He returned to Rome a rich man, where he married
Claudia Pulchra. From his first appearance in the Senate, Brutus aligned with the Optimates (the
conservative faction) against the First Triumvirate

back up several times over. Soccer has taken away bits and pieces of me, and it has replaced my
perspective on the world in exchange. Although I share a love/hate relationship with the sport, I am
grateful to have soccer in my life; it has helped guide and mold me into a better person. Injuries are
usually not something to be grateful for, but I love mine. From the earliest days of playing soccer,

As a smaller player on the field, most of the time my ankles were getting assaulted by kids one and a
half times my size. Fortunately, two consecutive years included a nasty ankle injury for me. Thanks to
other players, soccer had the opportunity to reteach me. The first injury occurred between eighth and
ninth grade, right before I moved up to high school soccer. I was playing indoor soccer between
outdoor seasons, since my friends from school made a team, and during one fateful game, I jumped to
head the ball before an opposing player could and ended up drawing the short end of the stick in the
ordeal. I was successful in reaching the ball first, but he decided to push me just before I landed,
causing me to plant my right foot improperly on the ground and place my full weight on the side of
my foot. There was an immediate pop. It felt as if my foot detached and I was standing on the bare
nub of my ankle. There was blinding pain, yet no pain at all. Just pin pricks of blood flowing
furiously. Before anyone could ask why I was limping, I was off the field and icing my ankle. After a
late night visit to the emergency room when the swelling continued to grow and I could no longer put
any pressure on my foot, it was discovered that I had a high ankle sprain. The doctors ordered me to
wear an air cast for the following two to three months with a strict ban on running, along with minimal
walking to get to class only patience is a virtue. However, the following season I managed to hurt the
same ankle all over again during practice. While going to shoot the ball, I had the unfortunate
circumstance of a defender trying to clear the ball at the same moment. Our feet hit the ball at the
exact same time, and the earth shattering force of contact left both of us on the ground holding our
ankles as the pain throbbed each time blood pumped through our injured veins. At this point, I

Arabian Nights Characters Analysis
The frame story of The Arabian Nights is set up with the kings encounters with their wives and the
demon s woman. Linked by the emphasis on promiscuity as a shared characteristic of all the women
concerned, and structurally by the repetition of the act of betrayal and the humiliation of men, the
message is clear: woman s sexuality and promiscuity can not be controlled.
Opening with the story of King Shahrayar and Shahrazad and their wives, we are first introduced to
the themes of betrayal and the promiscuity of women. Here are two kings living in different cities, far
from each other, experience similar circumstances. Their women, having betrayed them, make love to
their slaves once King Shahrayar and Shahrazad are gone. This is the first sign of the king s changing
their perspective on women and both acting rashly on their own feelings.
How will it be and what will happen behind my back when I go to visit my brother in India? No.
Women are not to be trusted. He got exceedingly angry, adding, By God,I am king and sovereign in
Samarkand, yet my wife has betrayed me and has inflicted this on me. As his anger boiled, he drew his
sword and struck both his wife and cook. Then he dragged them by the heels and threw them from the
top of the palace to the trench below. (pg 6)
As seen through both King Sharhrazard words of Women are not to be trusted. and actions of
murdering his wife and cook that these action, although seemingly justified, are rash and are based on

Speech On Steve Jobs Speech
Steve Jobs, one of the cofounders of Apple, delivered a speech to the graduates of Stanford University
at their commencement ceremony. Although Steve Jobs was a college dropout, his speech was more
inspirational than anything. Jobs shared three stories with the graduates. His first story was about
connecting the dots, the next one was about finding love, and the last story was about death. The three
most influential points that I got out of Job s speech, was to never lose faith, trust in something, and
don t waste your time living someone s else life. Steve Jobs told the graduates of Stanford to never
lose faith. This advice stood out to me the most out of everything else. Sometimes when stumbling
blocks come one s way, they tend to give up and lose hope. I felt like Jobs knew my story because it
connected to my life. At the end of my high school career I made my final decision that I wanted to go
to Winthrop. I was already telling everyone that Winthrop would be my new home. I received my
student bill and noticed my scholarships and grants were not enough to pay for it. I was torn, and didn
t know what to do. My mother told me I would have to pick another school, but I did not want to hear
that. So, I prayed about it day in and day out and knew a miracle was going to happen. The next week
I got a call from the Vocational Rehabilitation Center, and they told me they would be able to help
with my tuition. I knew then and there, it was God. The moral of the story is, I never

Disease and Death in Hamlet Essay
Disease and Death in Hamlet
In Shakespeare s time, Denmark was a horrible, rotting, poisoned land due to its hidden deceit. In
Hamlet, Shakespeare makes many references to this as a means of clarifying relationships in the story.
Writers often use imagery to provide detail and development, which help us understand ideas within
and the atmosphere of the play. Hamlet, Horatio, and the ghost are the characters who allude to
Denmark s state of decay. Shakespeare s frequent references to death and disease are not only
evidence of the harsh and dirty living conditions of the time; they are a recurrent theme in all of his
works.
Hamlet himself constantly references disease. After the death of his father and marriage of his ... Show

Hamlet is so depressed that he feels life isn t worth living and Shakespeare s death imagery helps us to
feel what Hamlet is experiencing because we can actually picture flesh turning to dew. A reader could
argue that all this death and gore could be in Hamlet s mind alone until Horatio says, Something is
rotten in the state of Denmark (I, IV, 90). Now we know not only does Hamlet think this, but Horatio
does as well. Picture festering carrion as a metaphor for King Hamlet s death and we realize that
Horatio s words couldn t be truer. The ghost also makes a horrible reference. He says at the moment of
his death, his skin became Most lazar like with vile and loathsome crust all my smooth body (I, V, 72).
This passage is exceptionally powerful and you can almost feel what death is like, with skin crusting
over and open sores flowing with puss, you become like a leper before death takes its toll.
Decay also becomes a strong item on Hamlet s mind. While talking to Polonius he says, For if the sun
breed maggots in a dead dog, being a good kissing carrion (II, II, 182). Although this goes over
Polonius head, we can see that this imagery really helps to get Hamlets point as well as Shakespeare s
across. Imagery like this also helps out a lot with description because rather than just saying When the
dog dies, we can

Monster Culture Thesis
Since the first horror films were produced over a hundred years ago, they have managed to keep
people shivering in terror. For a few, it is the actual monster that is the most frightening, but for the
majority, what lies beneath the surface is what brings the most terror. The visually stimulated fear of
the actual monster tends to fade, but the deeper rooted fears that the monster represents tend to have a
much longer lasting impression on the viewer. Horror films of the forties and fifties appealed to the
publics fear of war and nuclear attack, and horror films of today appeal to fears in much of the same
way. Many modern day horror films manage to strike fear in the widest audience by appealing to their
childhood fears such as the dark, strangers, or creepy clowns. ... Show more content on

As Jeffery Cohen has stated in his Seven Thesis of Monster Culture, The Monster s Body Is a Cultural
Body. Horror films are supposed to appeal to the fears of not just a few, but of the public. As people
grow, their fears change, material things lose their horror, and it is the things that we can not control
that replace them; some adults fear the government, while others simply fear what the future brings.
Contrary to this, when we are children we all tend to fear many of the same things. It is for this reason
that the majority of horror films have tended to appeal to childhood fears; they are similar for many
people and appeal to the fears of the widest

The Effects Of Transition Metals
Transition metals, such as iron, copper, zinc, nickel, and cobalt, play vital roles in numerous
67 biological processes. Because of these metals unique redox and inorganic chemical properties,
68 they either serve as catalytic centers for enzymatic reactions or contribute to overall protein
69 stability. To thrive, all organisms have to maintain adequate levels of transition metals for their
70 cellular metalloproteins, which account for more than 30% of all proteins in biological systems.
71 However, the overloading of transition metals will cause severe adverse effects, such as
72 generating toxic free radicals. Consequently, biological systems have evolved sophisticated

93 Nix and Nik pathways either directly import nickel by a high affinity metal transporter or
94 use small molecule chelators from the environment to mediate metal transportation and have a
95 strong preference for the acquisition of nickel over other metals. In contrast, the Cnt pathway
96 itself synthesizes a novel broad spectrum nicotianamine like metallophore staphylopine (STP)
97 from the first three genes cntKLM in the pathway to facilitate metal acquisition and it has little
98 preference for different metals (17 20) (Fig. 1). The biosynthetic pathway of STP is conserved

Drug Testing In Sports Essay
A dominant problem in sport today is the use of performance enhancing drugs (doping). The
temptation of doping is high because athletes are constantly judged on their performance. However
drug testing is costly; per person, a drug test costs around $700. New Zealand athletes are often
missing out on dreams they have worked a lifetime to fulfill, because of world wide, performance
enhancing drug use. Drug testing has an exorbitant cost. New Zealand s expenditure alone in 2015/16
amounted to $2.962 million. Are these tests even fair and worth the cost? Most athletes consume some
sort of dietary supplement that has no evident effect on performance enhancement, for example, a
simple multivitamin can test positive in a drug test from being on the same production line as a
prohibited substance. An unpublished survey revealed that 93% of elite New Zealand athletes had
ingested at least 3 dietary supplements in the 6 months previous, a risk when drug testing is
definite. The line between supplement use and an actual performance enhancing drugs ... Show more

advance the methods and technologies used in drug testing, to ensure that sport is a fair and safe

media. Programs are urgently needed to be put in place in countries that encourage performance
enhancing drug use, to educate young athletes of the danger of doping. Stricter regulations on health
and supplement industry, should be enforced on the multi billion dollar companies, whereby they have
to prove the safety of their product. These issues need to be addressed by WADA (World Anti doping

Pros And Cons Of High Stake Testing
High Stake Testing According to our textbook, high stake testing involves all students including those
with disabilities participating in a standardized summative common assessment, which is mandated by
the federal government. (Salend, 2016, pg 454) These assessments are used to measure mastery of
benchmarks in the curriculum. (Salend, 2016, pg 454) These assessments are used and analyzed in
order to make important decisions. The results of high stake testing can be used to make decisions
about a student s education program and promotion. They often are used to measure teaching
effectiveness. The use of high stake testing is highly controversial. Many argue these tests are not an
accurate depiction of a student s abilities. Not every student is a good test taker, and other means of
assessments could be used to measure student s skills and abilities. It may also cause pressure on
students as well as cause testing anxiety and lack of motivation in some students. (Salend, 2016, pg
455) Other consequences of high stake testing is that is puts too much reliance on a test to measure
teacher effectiveness. It also puts a lot of pressure on teachers since they are often evaluated based on
the results of students performance on the test. This may lead to teacher s teaching to the test and may
limit their creativity and time spent on other content outside of the test. There are alternative testing
assessments and testing accommodations available for students with disabilities.

Conspiracy Theory Of Pizzagate

and facts before passing on such news to others. Pizzagate was a conspiracy theory that went viral
during the 2016 Presidential Election campaign, which alleged there was a child sex ring taking place
and the top Democrats had something to do with it (Pizzagate: A Slice of Fake News). Some believe it
all started when John Podesta, Hillary Clinton s campaign manager, had his email account hacked.
Tons of emails were leaked and made public. His emails were said to contain coded messages that
referred to human trafficking and were also connected to the Comet Ping Pong pizza parlor (
Pizzagate: A Slice of Fake News). James Alefantis is the owner of the Comet Ping Pong and also an
acquaintance of Podesta. One email did contain Podesta and Alefantis discussing a fundraiser idea for
Hillary Clinton, but no talk happened about the alleged child sex ring. While this news was spreading
fast, Alefantis and his forty plus employees were receiving deaths threats, negative tweets on Twitter
and Facebook, and facing harassing altercations with strangers. The staff observed social media
outlets and counted five #pizzagate Twitter posts a minute at one point (Kang). Alefantis himself said

The Dropped Sales Of Cereal
The dropped sales of cereal. One of the main issues that I have noticed about my idea of making All In
One product is the dropping sales of consumption of cereals. As the data shows the consumption of
cereal has dropped about 5 7 percent these past couple of years (Trafecante, 2016). However, the
reason is not the reducing number of people who eat breakfast, but the increasing number of variety of
breakfast meal in the stores, which makes many people to switch to another type of breakfast food. As
it mentioned in the New York Times article many companies, such as Kellogg, General Mills and Post,
concerned about the reducing trend of sales are trying new innovative ways to stop the downward
trend (Melisa, 2014). Since the half of the cereal consumers are adults they try to make the new
products nostalgic to influence adults choices of breakfast type. Another reason that many cereal
companies believe is the reason of the lowered consumption of cereal is the laziness of people,
because as the article states the 40 percent of teenagers consider eating cereal on breakfast is
inconvenient because they have to clean up afterwards, and they prefer to eat something that will not
take much of their time (Mitchell, 2016). Therefore many consumers switch from eating cereal to
another breakfast not because they don t like it anymore but because it takes longer time to make it
and clean up. Thus, when my All In One product get introduced in the market, we will have a

One night I was working as a 911 dispatcher for Mohave County Sheriff s Office and I received a call
from Las Vegas Metro Police Department with an attempt to locate. Law enforcement agencies
typically put out an attempt to locate for missing or wanted persons or after a crime had just occurred
and a suspect was at large. I took the information from the Metro dispatcher over the phone. I did have
another option to advise the agency to send a teletype message which is a secured, electronic message
that can be sent nationwide among state and federal law enforcement agencies. This type of message
would have been detailed and documented on paper, but because I was so busy I made the decision to

scene and took the armed, male subject into custody without further incident. Upon further
investigation the body of a young female was located in the trunk of the car and the name of the male
subject matched the one that has been given to me in the original ATL. At that moment I panicked
because I knew that I had missed imperative information given by the Metro dispatcher. When the
incident was over I spoke with a coworker and a sergeant that was in the dispatch center, and I told
them that I had screwed up. The sergeant told me that I was an experienced dispatcher and that maybe
it was all in my head. He also said that if I believed that I had done something wrong he knew I would

came into work that night to pull the call, so that I could listen to the playback and prepare a memo for
the incident. It was discovered that I had missed the information advising that the subject was
homicidal, suicidal, and that he was a person of interest in a possible homicide that had just occurred
in Las Vegas, hence the body in the trunk of the car. I also missed that the coordinates were not exact,
which might have alerted the deputies that the vehicle fire was

The Nature Of Violence In Grendel And Beowulf
War is an inescapable pattern in history. The world is constantly in a state of war. In America, we see a
war amongst ourselves with racism, discrimination, and hate crime. These wars seem meaningless,
and reveal that humans have an ingrained yearning for violence. While reading the novels Beowulf,
told from the perspective of a hero, and Grendel, told from the perspective of the monster, the innately
violent nature of humans becomes apparent. Throughout Beowulf and Grendel, killing and war are
common themes. Both novels feature violent scenes that show the cruel nature of humans. In Grendel,
the humans attack because they feel unsure about Grendel s motives and uneasy by his scary
appearance. When the humans went to war, they often expressed joy and would hold parties to
congratulate themselves for killing others (Heaney 35). Throughout the novel, Beowulf doings [of
murder] were praised over and over again (Heaney 57) by the citizens of his city. The positive
response to these brutal acts demonstrates the human wanting for violence. History demonstrates mans
violent tendencies. Jeffrey Goldstein, a psychologist at Temple University, says that We write and
teach our history in terms of violent events, marking time by wars (Kohn 1). We measure our
existence based on the violence we create. The climax of our histories is measured by the violence and
wars we endure. The non war periods during history are selective times of reporting (Kohn 1), where
we report violence

Gender Roles In Star Trek Next Generation Essay
In 1966 a series called quot;Star Trek quot; was created. It s creator, Gene Roddenberry, did not create
the show to be a science fiction series. The series was much deeper than that. It wasn t just about
discovering new planets and civilizations. It was about controversial issues. Even though the series
take place in the 23rd and 24th century the issues struck with the times and related current issues.
Through each series, The Original, Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager, there has been

There was the captain, Janeway, Kes and Seven of Nine. This series brought women into leadership
roles. The progression of women in Star Trek has been appropriately timed and has even pushed a
little bit past the time. Even though Uhura basically played the role of a secretary her role still pushed
the envelope for the time because of her race. She was a black actress during or right after the civil
rights movement. She even thought of quitting the role because she felt that she wasn t used enough
for her role in the series. However, after Martin Luther King, Jr. talked to her and told her how
important it would be for her to stay on the show, she did. Women in Star Trek have progressed from a
secretary type, to a doctor and counselor, to the second in command and eventually the first in
command or the captain. Their progress allows them to be more influential.
Let s talk more specifically about the Next Generation series. The Original series showed the four
starring male roles to provide everything for the crew. This is not the case in Next Generation. Next
Generation is more like a family with a father, a mother and children. But who were the biggest
members of the family? There are four characters, which give the presence of a family on Next

discussed our homelands and topics like school and cultural differences. We were amazed at how
different our lives were. Yet we were friends on board.

When the ship finally arrived at America. I was feeling excited yet apprehensive. I felt excited to see

What would the people be like? Would I still be able to go to school? Would we have to live off the
land? (If so, I could take Carlotta and Sancho with me)! I could not bear the thought of another few
weeks cooped up in that ship. Of course, I was nervous, and there were butterflies in my stomach, too!

Eastern and Western Religions Essay
The Soul According to Eastern amp; Western Religions The idea of the soul varies widely in religious
tradition. While these variations exist, its basic definition is unvarying. The soul can be described as
the ultimate internal principle by which we think, feel, and will, and by which our bodies are
animated. The soul is seen as the core principle of life or as the essence of a being 1. Views on the
permanence of the soul vary throughout religious tradition as well. While some view it as a mortal

Hinduism believes that realizing the soul is the embodiment of Brahman is essential to being released
from the cycle of rebirth, Samsara. Hindus understand that the soul, atman, is permanent and only
inhabits a physical shell which dies and passes the soul on to the next mortal shell, which can be better
or worse than the previous depending on karma. With that said, Hindus believe in rebirth until one
realizes the ultimate divine at which point they would be free from the punarjanma, the transmigration
of the soul, liberating their souls to achieve moksha. Buddhism, on the other hand, challenges Atman
with the belief in Anatman, which is non self. Buddhists believe that the world is constantly changing,
nullifying the concept of the permanent soul, Atman. There is no reason the soul remains unchanged
in a perpetually changing environment. Anatman is the idea of no permanent soul 3. A common
misconception is that Anatman means people have no soul. In reality it describes the constant change
of the soul during its time on earth. Buddhism holds that while there is no soul, the five elements that
make up an individual orient themselves to form a new individual. With each cycle of rebirth, these
aggregates, which include mind, consciousness, body, impulse, and feeling, will combine differently
to form distinct individuals 4. While Buddhists believe in karma, a summation of positive and
negative actions, they

was correct and the market share flipped and Universal gained more as the months progressed. This
process is what I would implement on a larger scale in my second simulation run.
Throughout my second run in the simulation I altered my strategy to have my prices lower then

Lyndon Johnson and the Tonkin Gulf Resolution Essay
Lyndon Johnson and the Tonkin Gulf Resolution
The official rhetoric of Lyndon Johnson s administration portrayed the Gulf of Tonkin incident as an
unprovoked and malicious attack on U.S. ships by the armed forces of North Vietnam, as a result of
which the President needed the power to deal militarily with the North Vietnamese. The Gulf of
Tonkin incident explicitly encompasses military actions on August 2, and alleged actions on

In addition, this paper will argue that the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution itself and the rhetoric of President
Johnson and his advisers show that the top officials in the U.S. government had an attitude of
insincerity toward South Vietnam as an independent country. The stepping up of military efforts by the
U.S. in the first nine months of Lyndon Johnson s presidency was motivated by a self serving
sentiment, which was to show the world the United States political resolve with regard to the spread of
Communism.
In essence, the passage of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution enabled President Johnson to use whatever
means necessary to do what he wanted to do, or felt he needed to do, in Southeast Asia. Immediately
after what has become known as the Gulf of Tonkin incident, the
President asked Congress for the power to use overt military force in
Vietnam without the declaration of war. At the time, however, it was extremely unclear exactly what
had taken place in the Gulf and whether or not the Resolution asked for was legitimate and just.
The revelation that the Gulf of Tonkin incident was a charade is presented by many ... [Even] George

Undersecretary of State under Johnson, spoke to Hendrickson about the Gulf of Tonkin charade. 2 The

Auto Enrolment Analysis
Although there is still adequate time for you to get an appropriate scheme in place by your staging
date, I feel that it is important for me to notify you that any persistent and deliberate non compliance
in respect of auto enrolment pensions can lead to the issuing of penalty notices by the pensions
regulator. The initial fixed penalty charge is £400. Even more severe penalties can be issued where
non compliance continues and in particular in cases where companies fail to pay employee
contributions. Where the number of company employees is between 50 and 249 the prescribed daily
penalty for continual non compliance breaches is £2,500. (Penalty charge details obtained from
www.thepensionregulator.gov.uk).

As a basic illustration, the table below provides you with the cost of one employee earning £25,000 a
year. It is important to note that these additional pension contribution costs will not produce any
additional tax liabilities for firms as employer contributions can be offset against corporation tax and
are not subject to employer National Insurance Contributions (NICs). You can therefore set your
employer pension contribution payments as an expense against company profits and therefore pay less

Essay On Why College Football Should Be Banned
College Football should be banned for lots of reasons. Why this sport should be banned is that college
football is a distraction on the athlete s studies and takes away their critical knowledge about the real
world, but also school work and what is important in life. Another reason why college football should
be banned is players could get injured severely. For examples, concussions, broken spin, injuries that
keeps them for not doing anything in life. College football also makes school more expensive than it
should be.
College football should be banned because it is not good for student athletes to play a sport all year
long. When an athlete does a sport that is all year and that the commitment must be there all the time it

Coaches will take millions of dollars for student athletes to live anywhere they want to and give out
full scholarships. College football, and basketball players get a lot of amount of money its around
hundred thousand dollars for housing, living off or on campus, and supplies for school (Blackistone
2014). It s not fair for college football players that don t do has much school work a normal student
would do daily. College athletes and regular students should have the same rules same accountability
the school demands (Blackistone 2014). Another big part why college football should be banned is
that programs take money from college students that pay for class pay for meals pay everything they
do on campus just as student fees and funds and Student athletes get everything for free not have to
pull out their own wallets (Bissinger 2012). When college football coaches take millions of dollars
they are also making the school more and more expensive for the students that must pay to attended to
that university or college there are at (bissinger 2012). Students that go to school just go for education
don t have any athletic ability to play college football and get that opportunity to have to that. Every
student that attended at a college should have the same rights rules that apply to

Death Of A Salesman Man Vs Society
In the play Death of a Salesman , by Arthur Miller, the primary theme can be seen as a conflict
between man and society. In which the ambition to achieve the American Dream controls the life of
Willy Loman and the influences he has. When success is not reached, sends Willy s mind on a mental
ride. Throughout the whole play the only thing Willy Loman would act upon being his need to fulfill
what he thought the American Dream was in society. He based his whole life around the concept that
being successful only comes if you re well liked by everyone: (Quote). In a way that is true, due to the
fact that people who are well liked tended to have it easier in life. Willy wants to influence his family s
lives with his strong belief. Therefore,

French Absolute Monarchy
In the centuries preceding the French revolution, France was an absolute monarchy renowned for its
power, wealth and efficiency. The French kings maintained this power by establishing the Estates
General, an assembly composed of representatives from the French nobility, church and mercantile
classes. All three classes served a key role, in exchange for a complete tax emption the French nobility
provided professional soldiers to protect France s vulnerable borders while the Catholic Church
administered the legal system and the lower class merchants financed the government with their tax
money. By cooperating with these groups, the French monarchs ensured that their power was never is
jeopardy (Fields, O Neil and Share 155 156). However, by the fifteenth century the French monarchy
had grown increasingly centralized, allowing the king to expand France s borders significantly while

Louis XVI, France s monarch at the time, attempted to end this downward spiral by calling the estates

would shore up support for his rule. Instead, the lower class merchants demanded that they be given

Night s Senior Awards Ceremony
This may not be the most fascinating story, but it s a story that I believe many students can relate to.
When it comes to school, we are always exposed to feelings of jealousy and envy towards students
who are smarter and have better grades than us. However, not because someone has more of
something, makes what you have any less significant and special.
On May 28th in my AP Literature class, my teacher handed out note cards for that night s Senior
$#$#1$#$# ceremony. My card had three numbers on it 7,9 and 21. Each number represents the order
in which a group of awards would be given out. For instance, since I had number 7 first, I was part of
the seventh group to go up on stage and receive an award. I was ecstatic to see which awards I would

I felt as if I was ,in a sense, finally measuring up to my peers. Once I sat back down, I started to enjoy
the ceremony more. I observed as the number ten group received their award for having over 1,000
hours of community service, the group eleven, then group twelve and so on. Patiently, I awaited for
Mr. Bravo to hold up the twenty one in order to receive my last award. When he finally did, I stood up
and began to walk toward the stage s stairs, but I noticed that I was the only one there. The times I
went up before, I could hear the sound of chairs folding up and students chattering as they walk to get
in line. But not this time. All you could here were the clicks of my heels. I began to feel even more
nervous now. I had absolutely no clue what the award was for. Why was I the only one here. Is it a
special award? Did I read the number wrong? Was I in line for the wrong number? My mind began to
overflow with these questions. This time my principle began with Our next award is being presented
to a special student whom the counseling staff has chosen as this years Champion of Character for her
extraordinary high school growth. She then continued with Congratulations to Ms. Leslie Ruiz. I
proceeded to walk on stage and receive my award. I was very nervous as I stood on stage alone, but I
also felt very honored and ecstatic to receive such a special award. From a distance I could see my
parents and my boyfriend as they

Analysis Of Some Keep The Sabbath Going To Church By Emily...
Religious freedom is the United States first American freedom. It is essential to an individual s
spiritual life and their very own salvation. It is the freedom to share one s faith and beliefs in their own
way. Emily Dickinson s poem Some keep the Sabbath going to Church, expresses her own religious
beliefs. The poem is a rejection of traditional religious behavior that takes place during her time. She
sees religion as a private matter for the individual. The poem indicates that one does not have to attend
church in accordance with society to show one s faith and beliefs. She writes, Some keep the Sabbath
going to Church / I keep it, staying at Home . Dickinson compares her home as a place to worship.

This Way for the Gas Ladies and Gentlemen
The sullen narrative This Way for the Gas Ladies and Gentlemen poignantly recounts the events of a
typical day in a Nazi concentration camp during World War II. The author, Tadeusz Borowski, was
Polish Holocaust survivor of Auschwitz, the series of death camps responsible for the deaths of the
largest number of European Jews. Recounted from a first person point of view, the novel unfolds at
dawn as the unnamed narrator eats breakfast with a friend and fellow prisoner, Henri. Henri is a
member of Canada, the labor group responsible for unloading the Jewish transports as they arrive into
the camps. They are interrupted by a call for Canada to report to the loading ramps. Upon the arrival
of the transport, the narrator joins Henri in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This Way for the Gas Ladies and Gentlemen aided my understanding of the Holocaust with its
overarching themes of dehumanization, death, and detachment. Throughout the entire novel the theme
of dehumanization is particularly evident in both the prisoner workers and the transport prisoners. The
Nazi guards are said to have beefy (pg. 41) faces, while an S.S. officer is described as having a rat like
smile as she sniffed around (pg. 41) the ramp. Prisoners are referred to as standing around like sheep
(pg. 48). Starving Greek prisoners are compared to huge human insects (pg. 35). Even the transport
trucks are called mad dogs (pg. 41). Everyone is treated and processed like livestock. Trucks drive
around, loading up lumber, cement, people (pg. 34), is yet another example of how a human life was
lowered to that of a mere object. A corpse is simply a mound of meat (pg. 45), and dead babies are
carried out of the transport like chickens, several in each hand (pg. 39). The poisonous compound
Cyclone B used to kill the prisoners was an effective killer of lice in clothing and of men in gas
chambers (pg. 29). Second is the theme of death. Death became a currency for the prison workers:
work for the Nazis for a second bowl of soup, an extra blanket, a pair of shoes, a piece of bread, etc...
The prisoners literally live off of death. They cannot afford to be human. All of us live

Indonesia Cocoa Bean Value Chain Case Study
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Indonesia is the third largest producer of cocoa in the world after Ghana and the Ivory Coast, and the
most significant cocoa bean supplier in East Asia. Indonesia s biggest competitive advantages include
its low cost, high production capacity (availability of supply), efficient infrastructure and open
trading/marketing system (business environment). Although the cocoa value chain in Indonesia has
experienced phenomenal growth over the past few decades, its continued competitiveness is
threatened by inconsistent and poor quality production. Widespread pest infestation, especially from

  • 2. Equality Expectations And Envy By Alain De Botton Alanah Claybaugh Mr. Brian Isbell Composition I 08 September 2015 Equality, Expectations and Envy In chapter two of Status Anxiety, Equality, Expectations and Envy , Alain de Botton explains to readers that perturbation about self image is caused by feelings of inadequacy, which are usually self inflicted. Envy occurs when a person compares themselves to the people around them. Botton contends, our judgment of what constitutes an appropriate limit . . .on wealth or esteem is never arrived at independently. . . ;it is formed when a person compares their surrounding with a reference group (25). People are compelled to do better because of jealousy and feelings of insufficiency. For hundreds of years, there was the thought that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even the equal rights revolution in America still didn t prevent the resentment felt by most. In fact, it made it worse. Tocqueville noticed that when people are set to the same level, the slightest variation is easily spotted (32). He asserted that, when people fail to rise to who they think they can be, it causes them to feel self hatred and underachievement (33). The success stories of others who have risen up from the dirt do not help the esteem of the people who think what and how much they have done in life is insignificant (41). William James, looked at the psychology behind the sociological problems created by expectations. James wrote an equation to describe self esteem, which is equal to the ratio of success rate to perceptions of ability. The equation suggests there are two ways to raise self esteem: one, work harder and achieve more, or two, want to achieve less things (36). Botton s interpretation of James s ideas signify Rousseau s argument that we may be happy enough with little if little is what we have come to expect, and we may be miserable with much if we have been taught to desire everything, ... • 3. Social Aspects Of Social Norm A social norm that strikes my fascination is in the initial actions, responses, and facial expressions individuals convey when greeting other people, whether a person is acknowledging a friend, co worker, family member, or a stranger, one would think that each person would greet everyone in somewhat the same manner due to the nature of one s personality and regardless of their relationship to that individual. I had the assumption that when people have a very bubbly and outgoing personality they would greet everyone in the same vivacious way. Likewise, when individuals are more reserved and less likely to take the initiative in introducing themselves to a stranger, I figured they would be more shy and quiet in their responses. So what I wanted to do was count to three out loud before saying, Hello back to my friends, co workers, family members, and strangers greetings and see how they would react to this social norm violation. Therefore, the social norm I chose to break was failing to respond directly to a person s greeting in the normal response rate and additionally counting out loud to three before replying. To get a fairly accurate conclusion of my findings, I responded to sixteen greetings in this peculiar way. I gathered the reactions from four friends, four co workers, four family members (although three were over the phone), and four random strangers who came up to talk to me. Of the twelve individuals I know personally, all of their personalities vary in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The nuclear age opened during World War II with a blinding light; a deafening roars fire and blood. The world s first nuclear bomb exploded at Alamogordo on 16 July 1945. It had a very complex history. The sensational discovery of nuclear fission first came in Germany in December 1938. British research then showed that the manufacture of a nuclear weapon was almost possible. The American technological, scientific and industrial effort in the Manhattan Project , that actually built the bomb. At last initial test was carried out in the wastes of New Mexico desert. Consequently the concern about India surfaces more strongly in the minds of the NNWS than any other state. Besides, India is so close to each one of them in terms of shared history, inheritance and culture that one cannot help but recognize her overwhelming influence. For them, to divorce the past, which all these countries shared with India, is to cut themselves off from their roots. 6. None of the NNWS of South Asia matches the Indian power capabilities with respect to any of the attributes of power. The power difference is so enormous that no NNWS can either singly or collectively encounter the Indian pressure and threat. Therefore, both militarily and economically the states are extremely vulnerable vis à vis India. All these issues bear out the fact that India, a single overwhelming factor, and looms very large in the minds of the small states of South Asia when matters not only of external relations but also of domestic importance are considered. 7. Pakistan is also an important actor in the region and appears big in the mind of NNWS too. But they do not so far perceive it as a threat. Nevertheless, when India and to some extent Pakistan acquire huge armed forces, with the latest combat aircraft, tanks, guns, a vast industrial establishment, a nuclear capability and even a nuclear power submarine then the smaller countries of south Asia cannot but watch with a high degree of ... • 5. What Is The Central Idea Of The Wife s Story The central idea of the short story, The Wife s Story, by Ursula Le Guin, is a wolf who finds out she is the wife of a werewolf. To support this the author states, I saw him, I had to see him, my own dear love, turned into the hateful one (LeGuin 7, lines 95 96). This quote shows the wife finding out about her husband s curse, which is the central idea. The character vs. character conflict of the family finding out about the husband and the character vs. self conflict of the husband changing into a human and or wolf helps develop the central idea because, without these conflicts there would be no story. In the short story, The Wife s Story, by Ursula LeGuin, there are many different forms of conflict. Some examples of those are, character vs. character when the family finds out about the husband being a werewolf, and character vs. self with the husband dealing with him being a werewolf and changing between man and wolf. To support this the author states, I saw him, I had to see him, my own dear love, turned into the hateful one (LeGuin 7, lines 95 96). The Classic Text Of Power And Interdependence International politics is simply defined as the academic principle which deals with the practical realities of a state s interaction with another state or several other states. This essay will outline how the classic text of Power and interdependence has shaped and continues to shape how we think about international politics. Power and interdependence, published and authored by Robert Keohane and Joseph Nye in 1977, was widely regarded as an influential book within the study of international politics. The authors wanted to challenge the fundamental assumptions of traditional and structural realism which at the time, focused on military and economic capabilities to identify state behaviour. • 8. I Used To Tell You Analysis Poetry during the Roman empire played a prevalent role in society along with what was being discussed and studied around the cities under their rule. However, what is less known are the roles society and the people played, in what type of poetry, language, and tone were used. Latin poetry, through symbolism and humanity s ideology, represents the evolution of the Roman era and government. Latin literature leaves behind a lasting legacy of the culture of ancient Rome. Some of the earliest works are historical epics telling of the early military history of Rome, followed by comedies, histories and tragedies. The comedies were the earliest as the Roman empire was strong and they could have fun because there was nothing to worry about. The tragedies were written during the collapse of the Roman empire. • 9. Physician-Assisted Suicide Essay Is the role of a medical professional to ensure the well being of their patients, or to assist them in ending their lives? Many people may believe that physicians would never perform the latter, but in actuality one practice does so. Physician assisted suicide is the intentional ending of one s life brought on by lethal substances prescribed by a doctor. In the majority of cases, the patient is terminally ill and simply does not desire to live any longer. Their physician provides the medication necessary to end their life. Many supporters aver that this practice is merely an act of compassion as terminally ill persons may suffer extreme pain that eradicates any will to live. They also assert that the decision to die is of the patient s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Joe Messerli, Assisting in suicides would be a violation of that oath, and it would lead to a weakening of doctor patient trust (3). If doctors violate the oath, especially the above stated portions, patients may be inclined to question what other standards of medicine are being breached. Assisted suicides contravene medical ethics, as evidenced by the multiple violations of the Hippocratic Oath. Furthermore, the practice of assisted suicide has a significant possibility of being abused. Assisted suicides are designed to allow those who are seriously ill and suffer from extreme pain to easily end their lives (Braddock and Tenelli 1). Those who lack support from members of their family or friends may feel worthless and hence may desire to end their lives (Pretzer 2). If the patient has no loved ones to confide to and receive support from, they may feel as if no one cares and therefore no reason to live exists. Since assisted suicides are unregulated, doctors may allow patients wishing to die for subordinate reasons, such as the one previously stated, instead of suffering reasons to commit suicide. Moreover, Patients who want to die for psychological or emotional reasons could convince doctors to help them end their lives (Messerli 3). As stated before, assisted suicides are not meant to allow those with emotional or mental problems to end their lives. If someone has such problems, they should ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Organizations have recently been investing greater capital and time into human resources seeing as it impacts companies presently more than it has previously. With the focus on human resources, companies can gain a competitive advantage by maintaining sustainability, as well as solving challenges on a global and technological level. Second Dimension International (SDI) Marketing has recently faced issues affecting their intangible assets that are detrimental to the company s sustainability. As long as SDI continues to receive contracts from recognized companies, their economic growth will continue to rise. However, the continuation of contracts will only be plausible if the issues and subsequent recommendations presented will be initiated and executed. When a particular market or industry experiences sudden growth, it is difficult for companies to immediately adapt to the changes in order to be efficient and effective. With companies spending more of their capital on providing an experience for their audience, SDI is a company who must adapt to these changes proficiently. Unfortunately, there are still opportunities for the marketing firm to strengthen and grow. SDI s intangible assets including human capital pose a threat to the company s sustainability, as they are vital to a company s competitive advantage. The company s main drawback is their inability to manage their talent in terms of attracting, retaining, and developing. This not only increases SDI s recruitment and training costs but it also effects employee morale and engagement. One may become naive in the course of friendship and never realize by the end that a friend may become an enemy. In A Separate Peace by John Knowles this is just the case, a friendship that consists of two complete polar opposites, Gene and Finny, one athletic the other a brainiac. Gene and Finny go to Devon School and through thick and thin these two have stuck together, however during the summer into junior year their relationship hits some turbulence. Knowles here draws a point that conflicts in oneself can affect what is occurring externally, because of ignorance the consequences extended beyond reach. Furthermore, Gene does not simply see Finny as a friend but a partner in crime. Finny trapped me again in his strongest trap, that is, I suddenly became his collaborator ( Knowles 1959). • 12. Benefits Of Learning Outside The Classroom There is no doubt that learning outside the classroom should be compulsory for all schools. Many of my own memories from Primary School are those in which I spent outside of the classroom making daisy chains and learning about birds at a local park. Nowadays, children are losing the opportunity to explore their natural world and have fun outside as advances in technology have caused them to play games on their tablets or iPads and the increase of cars means that it is safer for them to play inside. Many children do not go outside at all, apart from when they are at school, therefore it is extremely important that they are given as many opportunities as possible during the school day to have enjoyable experiences outside of the classroom. Grigg and Lewis (2016, p. 19) define learning outside the classroom as children learning about people, their heritage and the natural environment, largely through play and first hand experiences, in a wide range of contexts beyond the classroom. Learning outside the classroom enables teachers to bring the curricula alive by integrating the school grounds and the local landscape into their teaching (Beames et al., 2012). It is important that children are given more opportunities to explore the natural world as there is no doubt that there are many benefits to outdoor learning. Furthermore, according to the Learning Outside the Classroom Manifesto: Every young person should experience the world beyond the classroom as an essential part of learning and personal development, whatever their age, ability or circumstances. (Department of Education and Skills, 2006, p.2) The Council for Learning Outside the Classroom (2017) believes that outdoor learning is a powerful tool that is proven to raise achievement, improve social, emotional and personal development and contributes to the health and well being of children and young people. There is no doubt that children will learn better if they are given space to discover and explore for themselves. With these elaborate changes particularly regarding the current sophistication of technology, the workplace has also been propelling forward particularly focusing on the way in which they are governed. An organisational structure is the process of arranging people and other resources to work together to accomplish a goal (Schermerhorn, 2011). However, the Valve Steams Ahead case study shows that Valve Software does not have an organisational chart or training programs for new employees. They are simply given the staff handbook that is administered to each new employee. This handbook describes how the structure works, picking your own projects, office hours, peer reviews, steps taken after your first 6 months, hiring new staff and the weaknesses of the company (Handbook for New Employees). This lack of structure within the company makes it hard for people to develop mentors and become accustomed to the social aspects of the company which is only translated through existing employees. This affects the hiring of new staff as some talented people who are perfect for the organisation prefer to work within a formal organisational structure. Recommendations In order for Valve Software to improve their hiring of new staff and the initial training and development of employees, a few steps must be taken which are modified from formal organisational structures. Firstly, regarding the hiring of new staff, standardised personality testing should become a part of the day to day hiring procedures. Personality testing will distinguish between the right and wrong people for the job in relation to the atmosphere and co workers within the company. Personal Note On Sexual Violence Assignment Turnitin Week 3 Institution: Name: Assignment Turnitin Week 3 Identify and briefly describe the two specific types of individual, couple, and/or family crisis situations you have selected. In the assignment application, I have identified partner violence and lethality as the two types of crisis situations to discuss about. Partner violence may occur in three different forms. First, Physical violence which involves intentional use of physical force with the aim of causing harm, injury, disability or death. Physical violence may also involve activities such as biting, slapping, choking, punching, burning, using a weapon to inflict pain, shoving, throwing as well as using restrains on one body. Secondly, Sexual violence which generally refers to involuntary sexual act in which a person is physically compelled or coerced to engage against their will. This violence does no necessary require sexual intimacy and can occur between same sex couples and heterosexual couples (Baldry Winkel, 2008). This may occur in three main ways: By use of excessive physical force to compel an individual to engage into a sexual act which is contrary to his or her will, forcible sexual act to a victim who is unable to resist or understand the nature of the situation in order communicate his /her unwillingness to engage in the sexual act and finally the abusive sexual contact (Garcia McManimon, 2010). • 18. The Tragic Hero Of Marcus Junius Brutus Minor Essay Marina Senseney Eng. ll / 4th block October 27, 2015 Tragic hero Marcus Junius Brutus Minor was the son of Marcus Junius Brutus Maior and Servilia Caepionis. His father was killed by Pompey the Great in dubious circumstances after he had taken part in the rebellion of Lepidus; his mother was the half sister of Cato the Younger, and later Julius Caesar s mistress. Some sources refer to the possibility of Caesar being his real father, despite Caesar s being only 15 years old when Brutus was born. Brutus uncle, Quintus Servilius Caepio, adopted him in about 59 BC, and Brutus was known officially for a time as Quintus Servilius Caepio Brutus before he reverted to using his birth name. Following Caesar s assassination in 44 BC, Brutus revived his adoptive name in order to illustrate his links to another famous tyrannicide, Gaius Servilius Ahala, from whom he was descended. Brutus held his uncle in high regard and his political career started when he became an assistant to Cato, during his governorship of Cyprus. During this time, he enriched himself by lending money at high rates of interest. Brutus was also active in the province of Cilicia, in the year before Cicero was proconsul there; Cicero documents how Brutus profited from moneylending to the provincials in his Letters. He returned to Rome a rich man, where he married Claudia Pulchra. Opening with the story of King Shahrayar and Shahrazad and their wives, we are first introduced to the themes of betrayal and the promiscuity of women. Here are two kings living in different cities, far from each other, experience similar circumstances. In Hamlet, Shakespeare makes many references to this as a means of clarifying relationships in the story. Hamlet, Horatio, and the ghost are the characters who allude to Denmark s state of decay. Now we know not only does Hamlet think this, but Horatio does as well. Picture festering carrion as a metaphor for King Hamlet s death and we realize that Horatio s words couldn t be truer. The ghost also makes a horrible reference. He says at the moment of his death, his skin became Most lazar like with vile and loathsome crust all my smooth body (I, V, 72). This passage is exceptionally powerful and you can almost feel what death is like, with skin crusting over and open sores flowing with puss, you become like a leper before death takes its toll. Decay also becomes a strong item on Hamlet s mind. While talking to Polonius he says, For if the sun breed maggots in a dead dog, being a good kissing carrion (II, II, 182). (Salend, 2016, pg 454) These assessments are used to measure mastery of benchmarks in the curriculum. (Salend, 2016, pg 454) These assessments are used and analyzed in order to make important decisions. The results of high stake testing can be used to make decisions about a student s education program and promotion. They often are used to measure teaching effectiveness. The use of high stake testing is highly controversial. Many argue these tests are not an accurate depiction of a student s abilities. Not every student is a good test taker, and other means of assessments could be used to measure student s skills and abilities. It may also cause pressure on students as well as cause testing anxiety and lack of motivation in some students. (Salend, 2016, pg 455) Other consequences of high stake testing is that is puts too much reliance on a test to measure teacher effectiveness. It also puts a lot of pressure on teachers since they are often evaluated based on the results of students performance on the test. As the data shows the consumption of cereal has dropped about 5 7 percent these past couple of years (Trafecante, 2016). However, the reason is not the reducing number of people who eat breakfast, but the increasing number of variety of breakfast meal in the stores, which makes many people to switch to another type of breakfast food. As it mentioned in the New York Times article many companies, such as Kellogg, General Mills and Post, concerned about the reducing trend of sales are trying new innovative ways to stop the downward trend (Melisa, 2014). Since the half of the cereal consumers are adults they try to make the new products nostalgic to influence adults choices of breakfast type. Another reason that many cereal companies believe is the reason of the lowered consumption of cereal is the laziness of people, because as the article states the 40 percent of teenagers consider eating cereal on breakfast is inconvenient because they have to clean up afterwards, and they prefer to eat something that will not take much of their time (Mitchell, 2016). • 32. The Nature Of Violence In Grendel And Beowulf War is an inescapable pattern in history. The world is constantly in a state of war. In America, we see a war amongst ourselves with racism, discrimination, and hate crime. These wars seem meaningless, and reveal that humans have an ingrained yearning for violence. While reading the novels Beowulf, told from the perspective of a hero, and Grendel, told from the perspective of the monster, the innately violent nature of humans becomes apparent. Throughout Beowulf and Grendel, killing and war are common themes. Both novels feature violent scenes that show the cruel nature of humans. In Grendel, the humans attack because they feel unsure about Grendel s motives and uneasy by his scary appearance. When the humans went to war, they often expressed joy and would hold parties to congratulate themselves for killing others (Heaney 35). Throughout the novel, Beowulf doings [of murder] were praised over and over again (Heaney 57) by the citizens of his city. The positive response to these brutal acts demonstrates the human wanting for violence. History demonstrates mans violent tendencies. It s creator, Gene Roddenberry, did not create the show to be a science fiction series. The series was much deeper than that. It wasn t just about discovering new planets and civilizations. It was about controversial issues. Even though the series take place in the 23rd and 24th century the issues struck with the times and related current issues. Through each series, The Original, Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager, there has been progression with the times and the issues. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There was the captain, Janeway, Kes and Seven of Nine. This series brought women into leadership roles. The progression of women in Star Trek has been appropriately timed and has even pushed a little bit past the time. Even though Uhura basically played the role of a secretary her role still pushed the envelope for the time because of her race. She was a black actress during or right after the civil rights movement. She even thought of quitting the role because she felt that she wasn t used enough for her role in the series. However, after Martin Luther King, Jr. talked to her and told her how important it would be for her to stay on the show, she did. Women in Star Trek have progressed from a secretary type, to a doctor and counselor, to the second in command and eventually the first in command or the captain. Their progress allows them to be more influential. Let s talk more specifically about the Next Generation series. The Original series showed the four starring male roles to provide everything for the crew. This is not the case in Next Generation. Next Generation is more like a family with a father, a mother and children. But who were the biggest members of the family? There are four characters, which give the presence of a family on Next Generation. First, you have the father. This is actually quite simple. You have Captain Picard who plays the father. All facts and dates are historically correct. I come from Spain. My name is Carmina Diaz. I immigrated because of the Cristero War, in Spain. The war was actually a rebellion of the Roman Catholics in Spain who were persecuted by the government. There were dangers such as raids and the death toll was growing higher every day. She spoke Portuguese as well as Spanish and introduced me to her good friend Sancho from Portugal. We all became friends and discussed our homelands and topics like school and cultural differences. We were amazed at how different our lives were. Yet we were friends on board. Reaching Ellis Island When the ship finally arrived at America. I was feeling excited yet apprehensive. I felt excited to see this new world that had been all the talk on the ship. However, worry was practically eating my insides; where would we go? What would we do? Would wild animals attack us? Would we have to live off the land? (If so, I could take Carlotta and Sancho with me)! I could not bear the thought of another few weeks cooped up in that ship. • 35. Eastern and Western Religions Essay The Soul According to Eastern amp; Western Religions The idea of the soul varies widely in religious tradition. While these variations exist, its basic definition is unvarying. The soul can be described as the ultimate internal principle by which we think, feel, and will, and by which our bodies are animated. The soul is seen as the core principle of life or as the essence of a being 1. Views on the permanence of the soul vary throughout religious tradition as well. Hinduism believes that realizing the soul is the embodiment of Brahman is essential to being released from the cycle of rebirth, Samsara. Hindus understand that the soul, atman, is permanent and only inhabits a physical shell which dies and passes the soul on to the next mortal shell, which can be better or worse than the previous depending on karma. With that said, Hindus believe in rebirth until one realizes the ultimate divine at which point they would be free from the punarjanma, the transmigration of the soul, liberating their souls to achieve moksha. Buddhism, on the other hand, challenges Atman with the belief in Anatman, which is non self. Buddhists believe that the world is constantly changing, nullifying the concept of the permanent soul, Atman. There is no reason the soul remains unchanged in a perpetually changing environment. Anatman is the idea of no permanent soul 3. A common misconception is that Anatman means people have no soul. In reality it describes the constant change of the soul during its time on earth. Buddhism holds that while there is no soul, the five elements that make up an individual orient themselves to form a new individual. With each cycle of rebirth, these aggregates, which include mind, consciousness, body, impulse, and feeling, will combine differently to form distinct individuals 4. This process is what I would implement on a larger scale in my second simulation run. Throughout my second run in the simulation I altered my strategy to have my prices lower then competition and it backfired greatly on me. My thought process for this was that having lower prices would definitely raise market share as consumers would chose the cheaper costs. At the same time I envisioned the drop in prices would result in more consumers switching companies and renting from Universal, but I was wrong. The results of this simulation ended with a loss of over $11 million but a market share of over 50%. My error for this simulation was that I relied too much on lowering prices.
