Archetypal Journey In Tim OBrien s On The Rainy Road
Morals, or a lack thereof, define the character of individuals. As Tim, the protagonist of On the Rainy
Road by Tim O Brien discovers, personal morals are difficult concepts to adhere to when faced with
challenging circumstances. Tim is a young man living in Minnesota, and by his own admission, had
the world dicked...summa cum laude... and a full ride scholarship for grad studies at Harvard (O
Brien). In an unfortunate turn of events, the army drafts Tim to fight in the Vietnam War, something
that he is staunchly against. Due to his beliefs against the war, Tim attempts to leave his home and
move to Canada, eventually coming back to fight after a period of self reflection. Through this
figurative journey , the author uses the fundamental plot archetype of the journey from innocence to
experience to demonstrate how adversity exposes the inherent human flaws in even the best people.
Tim s archetypal journey begins in his home in Minnesota, where his naivety and resultant innocence
are easily apparent through his personal opinions about morality. The archetypal journey typically
consists of five major steps, being; an innocent start in a familiar environment, followed by a descent
into danger and a battle with demons throughout which the hero gains experience, ultimately ending
with a return home (TVDSB). As Tim confesses, he had taken a modest stand against the war ,
however he assumes that the problems of killing and dying did not fall within my special province

Library Advantages And Disadvantages
Introduction
According to Metzger. M.C (2006), Academic Libraries continually adapt to the technological
advances and administrative challenges that follow . The staff plays an important role between the
information and the users. The staff being professional, or paraprofessional should possess the
knowledge of online databases, knowledge of all web features etc. Besides that, the systems may get
updated, replaced regularly and hence learning new or upgraded online resources must be an integral
part of every position in the library (Eells. L.L, Jaguszewski, J.M, 2008). I would like to take
Academic libraries as the Library setting.
There are many disadvantages that arise when the Librarians are not aware of the technical knowledge
in the academic libraries. In 1994, though there are computers, Librarians used to function without the
basic understanding of computers in the campuses. The presence of the internet on campus was not
supported by training programs or manuals. Along with the technological advancements, Library staff
came to know the importance of adapting themselves to technology. ... Show more content on

Mrs Helenne Alving And Ghosts
Plenty published by David Hare in 1978 and Ghosts published by Henrik Ibsen in 1881, might have
almost a gap of hundred years in publication, but they are both plays that attest the intertemporal issue
of society s pressure on the woman. In the notes of A Doll s house, in 1878, Ibsen writes A woman
cannot be herself in contemporary society, it is an exclusively male society with laws drafted by men,
and with counsel and judges who judge feminine conduct from the male point of view. The female
protagonist in Ghosts, Mrs Helene Alving, has been influenced by the society s need of forming
women that are first, obedient daughters, then, obedient wives, dutiful mothers, but in general,
obedient individuals of that society s ideals, conventions and traditions. In Plenty, the audience gets to
examine years of Susan Traherne s life, from her World War II activity as a courier in the French
Renaissance to her emotional privation in the post Suez British plenty . Even after the war, Susan
cannot sustain a fulfilling life since the society s ideals and conventions disharmonize with her own
opinions and purpose. The common element between Mrs Alving and Susan is that as women they are
expected to fit into a certain role in the real life, directed by the society itself, a life that diminishes
their personal fulfilment.
To begin with, Ghosts is a play that does not solely examine the society s pressure on the women, but
the impact of society on every individual regardless of gender.

Necessity of Dropping the Atomic Bomb to End World War II
Professor Robert James Maddox argues that the atomic bomb was necessary to force the Japanese
army to finally surrender and avoid a costly and heavy casualty war with Japan. On August 6, 1945,
the United States dropped the first atomic bomb over Hiroshima, Japan. Three days after the initial
bombing, another nuclear weapon was dropped on Nagasaki, a main Japanese city. President Truman
and Professor Maddox both had the same belief that these bombs were crucial to Japan surrendering in
the war. Maddox mentions that Japan was a beaten nation by the summer of 1945 and conventional
bombings had reduced many of their cities to almost nothing. He goes on to say that although many
rational calculations had Japan listed as a beaten nation, their military was fully prepared to fight and
even claimed to encourage invasions in order to make the United States suffer severe casualties.
With the use of kamikazes and even suicide missions to destroy American ships, the Japanese could be
expected to defend their nation at virtually all costs and fight the war hard until it was over. The
United States and President Truman declared that if Japan did not surrender, our nation would use the
atomic bomb on their country. There were roughly 193,500 anticipated casualties and according to
Robert James Maddox, these figures were never mentioned to President Truman. A second myth that
has been circulating is that many of the President s military advisers told him that the use of atomic
bombs would

The Assassination Of John Brown
There are many definitions of terrorism and no one can be completely certain what it really means.
Despite his actions at Pottawatomie Creek and Harper s Ferry, John Brown certainly had legitimate
reasons to carry out his attacks. Throughout his childhood, John had learned to be against slavery. His
father was a deeply religious man who believed owning people was against God s word. Even as a
child and teenager John was mature, enough to be an adult. So when he saw slaves beaten by their
owners, he knew it was wrong. As a teenager, John proceeded to become closer to the lord. Soon John
was an adult and still believed that slavery was wrong. The murder of Elijah P. Lovejoy set John over
the edge and he vowed that he would end slavery. In the years that followed, John Brown s vow
became unfulfilled. Despite his concern on slavery, John had much more ... Show more content on

When they made it, they rested up for a while before finally acting. As they were making their way
across a railroad. A person, recognizing John, ran off to try to warn the others. John s men shot to kill.
What is ironic about that situation? The first man they killed in Harper s Ferry was a free black man.
Having no remorse over the dead, John kept tromping onward. He took over Harper s Ferry as planned
but no slaves came to help. In fact, the slaves were among the ones to be horrified at John s actions.
Eventually, the military came and wiped out all of John s men including two of his sons. John was
captured and had to be brought on a stretcher to his hearing. They announced him guilty of all his
crimes and he was later sentenced to be hanged. John s actions caused a ripple throughout the north.
Northerners looked up to him as a hero. He inspired the north to make their moves to stop slavery. He
showed them that if one man can stand up to slavery imagine what would happen if all the north stood
up too. John Brown was a freedom

Importance Of Artificial Intelligence
What was once just a figment of the imagination of some of the most famous science fiction writers,
artificial intelligence ( AI) is taking root in our everyday lives ( Science Fiction to Reality 1). Artificial
Intelligence is a machinery which includes network and a probabilistic model. Artificial intelligence is
the computer that can now spontaneously translate spoken and written conversation. It can also
recognize and accurately cations photos, identify faces and can be your personal assistant. Artificial
intelligence has specific technologies, like the machine learning methods called neural network, that
can be trained from massive data sets to recognize objects in images or to understand spoken words.

technology, we would be lost because our lives are based on technology because they make people s
lives better and easier. Artificial intelligence makes a huge impact on many people s lives in many
aspects which make their lives more valuable. Think about this, without artificial intelligence then the
lives of people would be horrendous. Would you want your world to be horrible while watching other
places have advanced technology? Artificial intelligence doesn t only help make your life better and
easier, it also does things that humans can t so. Secondly, artificial intelligence is smarter than human
and can do the thing that humans can do and cannot do. Computer intelligence has been growing over
the years and soon they would be smarter than us. For example, ... Computer power has doubled every

The American Businessman Essay
The American Businessman When you think of your average businessman, the first thought probably
is a tall and slender man, who always wears black suits and is a wall street shark. However, this is not
the case for Eric Merchant. He is a large, jolly man, who always wears tee shirts that relate to cars and
trucks. Every weeknight, after Eric comes home from his job as a business owner, he starts to work
again. He is a day in and day out workaholic, he always has something to do and time to do it. He
elaborates, I can t just do nothing, that doesn t seem practical to me, Eric has always been a devoted
worker for his own personal satisfaction, and for his two children, Maddy and Masen. Before his
business, Merchant Automotive, became his priority in work, he was a mechanic for a Todd Wenzel
dealership. However, he still ran his own small business on the side while working there. He bought
parts from their supply manager and resold them on his own website. They knew what I was doing,
they just didn t care because I wasn t competing with them. His managers hadn t cared because they
weren t selling anything online, and therefore saw no problem with Eric doing so. Along with that, he
would do speciality mechanic work on large diesel trucks out of his own garage. Eric had tools and
knowledge to perform maintenance on specific vehicles that almost every other mechanic shop could
not do. He attracted customers from around the globe by using online forum websites, spreading

Allie, his younger brother, died of leukemia when he was eleven and when Holden was thirteen.
Holden reminisces about many memories spent with him before his passing throughout many chapters
in the book. It is evident that there is pain and sorrow in Holden s flashbacks. He tells the reader about
Allie s baseball mitt, how he missed his funeral, and how he sometimes talks aloud to him. Holden
was so distraught that on the night he found out of Allie s passing, he smashed all the windows in his
garage and was hospitalized the day of the funeral. When Holden talks about Allie, he feels guilty and
misses his presence. He even says, What I did, I started talking, sort of out loud, to Allie. I do that
sometimes when I get very depressed. This displays the increase for the longing for his brother.
Holden also talks about his younger ten year old sister, Phoebe, numerous times throughout the book.
He mentions that she is bright, pretty, mature beyond her years, and his most trusted link to family.
Holden even contemplates calling her first when he leaves school. This shows the bond between them
is close and strong. Phoebe is Holden s emotional anchor; for, with his sister there is no need for

The Tragedy of Shakespeare s Othello
William Shakespeare s play The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice provides an intriguing
perspective regarding matters related to race, envy, and treachery. Othello is a powerful and influential
Moorish general in the Venetian army, Desdemona is his wife, much younger than him and the reason
for which the general is hated, and Iago is Othello s seemingly trusted lieutenant. The relationship
between these three characters is complex and it actually one of the principal reason for which the
play holds a great deal of stratagems that puts each of the individuals in a delicate position requiring
more or less moral attitudes from them.
While Iago appears to be a good tactician, he is willing to do everything in his power in order to
upgrade his position, regardless of the effects that his actions might have on other individuals. His
fury is amplified by the fact that he believes that Othello slept with his wife, Emilia. This information
points toward the idea that Iago would have second thoughts about working against Othello if the
circumstances would not force him to do so.
Othello and Desdemona are trustful individuals in a society which does not have place for such
people. In spite of the fact that they are determined to put across true feelings regarding how they feel,
the fact that they yield to Iago s pressures to befriend them plays a destructive role in their lives.
Desdemona is one of the principal reasons for which Iago is not promoted, taken into account that her

The Foundation for Capitalism
Theory
Freedom is simply the right of an individual to control his or hers own actions, that aids in the
development of humanity. As freedom reflects back to capitalism, people within their respective class
who obtain money are the individuals who whole heartedly enjoy real freedom. However, is it really
considered freedom if there are restrictions attached to one s freedom?
The simplest things such as the production and distribution of goods and services or even the supply
of new technological advancements, are ran and operated by a group or class of people. This group is
known as the capitalist class. Those who work to produce and distribute the goods created by the
capitalist class profit and thrive off of the labor exploited by the ... Show more content on

What does this mean for people of a higher class or people of wealth? People of the upper class are
lowered to the same financial and economic status of the individuals in the middle class.
The state controls are means of production. So individuals cannot own their own business, cars,
homes, etc., because the state owns everything. Placing all the power within the states is an issue for
some individuals, as well as upgrading certain class and down grading another. Although communism
and socialism share some of the same qualities, they also differ in certain areas.
So how then, do the ideas of Friedman measure up to the real world events displayed throughout?
There can be flaws found in Friedman s arguments more especially with his belief of politics and
economics being both separate and largely unconnected. If an economy is weak, chances are the
political leaders are not that strong. However if the political leadership is strong, so should the
economy be due to the excellent decision making of the country s leaders. Individual freedom is
however a political problem.
The restraints placed on many of the activities, and actions citizens are allowed to enjoy and
participate have negative freedom. This type of freedom prevents an individual from taking pleasure
in whatever they choose, dwindling away their sense of free will. Political leaders are

Parents May Not Be Licensed Essay
In the essay Licensing Parents, LaFollette argues that the state should require all parents to be licensed
(182). Though LaFollette considers some theoretical and practical objections to his claim, he gives no
particular attention to how an activity could be precisely defined as potentially harmful to others, what
specific competence would be required for an activity to be done safely, and how reliably such
competence could be determined. In this paper, I will argue that the difficulty of clearly defining the
three criteria for an activity to be licensed undermines LaFollette s assertion that parenting ought to be
licensed. After describing LaFollette s basic rationale for licensing parents, I will indicate that

Consequently, because parenting is an activity potentially very harmful to children (184) and a parent
must be competent if he is to avoid harming his children (185), LaFollette concludes that the general
criteria for regulatory licensing can be applied to parents. However, there are several theoretical and
practical objections to LaFollette s proposal, but he argues that they all fail to undermine the proposal.
In the beginning of his argument, LaFollette claims that parenting is an activity potentially very
harmful to children (184). However, LaFollette does not explicitly justify how parenting could be
precisely defined as potentially harmful to children. In other words, LaFollette does not explicitly
establish what comprises exactly the minimum amount of harm that makes the activity potentially
harmful or very harmful. Instead, LaFollette only offers two scenarios in which children are harmed
abused or neglected by their parents (184). In this paragraph, I shall argue that, without a precise

second invasion, Much larger forces were sent. A total of around 142,000 troops were sent from two

large amount of the inhabitants. Also, when the Mongols reached Hakata bay, the Japanese samurai
did not know how to retaliate the coordinated attacks of the Mongols. However, the second time

though the Japanese were outnumbered, they had erected walls, six feet tall, about the coastal line.
This allowed the Japanese to fend off the Mongol forces. This may have been because the Japanese
realized that the Mongols tried not to get into close combat, and having a wall which the enemy would
have to climb and fight to get over, the Mongols would be forced to pursue the Japanese coast with
some hand to hand combat. The Mongols had taken measures to compensate for their mistakes in the

Antarctica Ice Sheet Trends
The ice sheets in Antarctica and Greenland are changing rapidly and are contributing significantly to
sea level rise (Church et al., 2011). In Greenland, surface melt leading to runoff and enhanced ice
discharge from outlet glaciers have contributed in equal amount to the mass loss of the ice sheet (van
den Broeke et al., 2009). In Antarctica, ice dynamics has been the dominant contributor to the mass
loss in recent decades, but surface mass balance signal exhibits inter annual fluctuations large enough
to significantly modulate the mass loss. In the mountain glaciers of Alaska, Canada, Patagonia and
others, surface mass balance (SMB) processes dominate the total mass balance (Larsen et al., 2015).

Skinner and his colleagues (Gass Larry, 2008), learning or a change of behaviour on the part of the
learner, is brought about by a process known as operant conditioning which is the result of repeated
training. Operant means voluntary behaviour which is the result of learner s own free will and is not
forced by any outsider or thing (Ortega, 2009). The learner will demonstrate the new behaviour first as
a response to a system of a reward or punishment, and finally it will become an automatic response.
Behaviourists believe that learning a language is no different from learning anything else. It becomes a
habit by the stimulus response reinforcement repetition process (Cook, 2001). The behaviourists also
claim that we learn by imitation and by association (Lightbown Spada, 2006). However,
psycholinguists argue that imitation is not enough because it is not only the mechanical repetition but
also natural exposure that children acquire language (Cook, 2001). Therefore, from the behaviourist
approach, language acquisition can be seen as a stimulus response process. Children learn language by
immitation and analogy. The roles of imitation, repetition, reinforcement, and motivation are essential
in learning the language. The First Language Acquisition is thus the result of nature which based on
practicing. Nativist or Innateness

Central Washington University s Campus Program
Central Washington University being a Division two sports school fields are an important factor. With
Central Washington University being located in an area where water is a necessity to keep the grass
green and healthy. Switching Central Washington University s football field from grass to turf has
many benefits. Central Washington University will be able to use the field more hours per day with no
field recovery time needed, use it for more months out of the year in almost any type of weather, save
on maintenance costs such as re sodding, watering and mowing, and cutting out harmful chemicals
such as pesticides and herbicides. Changing Central s football field from a grass to turf field will help
Central become a more sustainable campus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For the turf installation it is estimated to take 27 days off load turf rolls and place turf three days, sew
turf panels eight days, install field markings and decorative markings eight days, install infill five
days, remove construction entrance/clean up/demobilize/test field three days ().
Natural grass requires regular watering, fertilizing, mowing, seeding and pest control. On average it
takes 50,000 gallons of water a week to water a football field. With the price rates of water in
Ellensburg Washington 50,000 gallons a week add up to roughly $85. To keep the field green and in
the best playing conditions for the whole year it would cost the school $4,420. When it comes to
mowing there is a cost for the worker, cost for the gas, and cost for the machine. Along with those
costs the lawn mower is also releasing chemicals when being used causing pollution. With the
installation of a turf field it will reduce the amount of herbicides and pesticides that the school will
use, which cuts down on pollution of harmful chemicals.
Artificial turf does require some maintenance, including brushing, and watering but maintenance of an
artificial field is less continuous and less expensive than for natural grass. The amount of water needed

Dramatic Elements In Aunt Raini
In this theatrical production Aunt Raini, directed by the playwright Tom Smith and produced by
Pacific Lutheran University, has successfully perform theatrical elements within different perspective
of the performance, while the performance has connected and integrated the content based from the
script stories. For instance, from a stage production perspective, the constructing style of the scenes,
walls, flats or hand props and the accurate placement of stage properties on stage has specified the
background story setting while different style of composing, designing and painting of the scenery
represent the amount of efforts and works that whole crew had put in during the process of theater
production.
The story of the theatrical performance Aunt Raini was inspired by Leni Riefenstahl, a world
renowned filmmaker who creates the documentary Triumph of the Will of the Reich Party Congress
1934 in Nuremberg. Sadly, most of Riefenstahl s works after this documentary are reference as pieces
of propaganda for the Nazi Party, which led to her to be misunderstood and isolated within the art and
film communities throughout her lifetime. In this performance, Leni Riefenstahl, also reference as the
protagonist character of Aunt Raini , has come to New York City to visit her grandniece Katherine. On
the other hand, Katherine, known as The Great Revealer for her ability to find the best up and coming
artists on the Time magazine, is a successful art gallery owner. Meanwhile, One of

Stanley Vs Blanche
Throughout the play, A Streetcar Named Desire, Tennessee Williams portrays Stanley and Blanche as
extreme opposites. This leads to a clash between characters due to Stanley s harsh and realistic view
on life and Blanche s illusionary and magical view. In the play, Williams is expressing that reality and
fantasy cannot exist together without conflict. Blanche s character in this play creates a world filled
with illusions and lies. She does so to hide from reality since she would much rather be known as the
perfect Southern Belle rather than her true self. Blanche s main goal is to persuade others to believe
she is someone she is not. She seems to live in a world of her own, where she is admired for her looks,

He chooses to see the world for what it truly is, while Blanche is consumed with illusions. Throughout
the play, it is evident how often Stanley gets frustrated with Blanche s fantasy world she has created.
Stanley tries to warn his friend, Mitch, to be aware of Blanche s secrete lies. On some other occasion,
Stanley intervenes violently, stopping Blanche s and Mitch s dance. Blanche was trying not only to
seduce Mitch but also to make him believe in her innocence and even in her youth. Stanley, who had
done some research on her past, could not tolerate her lies towards Mitch, his friend. (Drobot). Stanley
informs both Mitch and Stella about Blanche s past. His main goal is to get both of them to see right
past Blanche s acts and have his life retreat back to how it was before she came. Stanley calls Blanche
out for the person she is and is not afraid to be blunt with her, because he is frustrated with her
interfering with his life. Furthermore, Stanley s view on women is a lot different compared to what
Blanche believes men are attracted to. In the play, Stanley announces, I ve never met a woman that

A Symbolic Activity Essay
Memorialization as a Symbolic Activity There is a growing awareness that addressing past injustices
are crucial for the process of healing and reconciliation. In order to move towards a peaceful future,
governments must acknowledge and respond to the wrongs and injustices of the past. While there is an
agreement between people that the process of reconciliation must acknowledge the wrongs of the past
and the victims, many scholars debate about how such acknowledgments are best communicated, so
that they will be sufficiently credible and effective in improving future relations. In fact, many argue
that memory is crucially important as a response to past injustices, especially when dealing with
human rights violations. Memorializing the past, through memorials, commemorative ceremonies,
etc., is widely promoted as a valuable way of redressing the wrongs of the past. But what kind of
redress can memorials provide, and how can they advance in transitional justice? Indeed, I consider
these symbolic reparations to be a double edged sword due to the strengths and weaknesses, it presents
as a practice for redressing the losses that were suffered by victims. In recent years, forgiveness has
attracted attention as a possible response of victims to perpetrators in past violent human rights
abuses. Moreover, transitional justice focuses on the effective and legitimate ways of addressing past
wrongs and moving towards achieving political reconciliation and re establishing societies

Katy Perry Firework
The song by Katy Perry entitled Firework is a very beautiful song that has a very powerful meaning.
This song talks about revealing one s real self to the world instead of keeping it a secret. It tells us not
to be afraid of what we have and who we really are but to be proud of it. The song is about being
proud of ourselves without feeling embarrass or scared. The song begins with the speaker asking a few
questions. The list of questions is basically to ask the listeners about their feelings. There is some time
that we feel down, hopeless, and useless because we think that we are not good compared to others. In
the next stanza, the speaker is trying to say that each of us has strength and speciality inside of us
which we should not be afraid ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Firstly, the speaker uses simile to compare a person s feeling with plastic bags. The plastic bags imply
as useless and weak. The imagery of a plastic bag that is drifting through the wind conveys a sense of
helplessness and having no control over one s direction as the plastic bag will easily change it
direction depend on wind blow. Just below this part, the speaker illustrates using a house of cards as a
simile. It shows how strong a person to withstand the surrounding pressure and the demands other
people have on us. The repeated idea of wind blowing in this and the previous line alludes to the idea
that the wind is a metaphor for the external pressure we face. In both comparison, we are being
compared to plastic bags and a house of cards, putting us in a vulnerable state that can be easily
destroyed by external pressure. The next part, the speaker use metaphor to compare the listeners to the
fireworks. The fireworks are bright, vivid, explosive, and powerful. This comparison encourages the
listeners to be themselves, and show the world about their ability. Another element that is used by the
speaker is onomatopoeia. The boom boom boom is just like how the sound is made only when the
fireworks have been released into the dark sky. It implies us to create out our own path and make our
success spectacular, and to stand boldly as the sound; loud and

The third scene is a close up of a man s face and then the camera pans out to reveal that the man is

The Competency Assessment Programme ( Cap )
Exemplar Currently, I am completing one of the requirements of the Competency Assessment
Programme (CAP) which is undergoing the clinical placement. When I learned that I will be assigned
to work at an aged care facility, I felt excited. The feeling of imagining what will it be like working as
a registered nurse in an aged care facility makes me feel satisfied because I know that aged care work
is rewarding in itself since I have worked before as a healthcare assistant for a year. I was assigned to
work at Hospital 1. On a Friday morning during our medication rounds with my preceptor, our
attention was drawn by one of the caregiver s report about a resident who is experiencing difficulty in
breathing. The resident s name is Map (pseudonym). He is 76 years old with a history of stroke. He
has right sided weakness and has the inability to produce speech. He also has a history of multiple
hospital admission over the years due to chest infection. As soon as we heard her report, we stopped
doing our medication rounds and attended to the said resident. When we came into Map s

heard his productive cough and observed retractions, use of accessory muscles when breathing,
inability to lie flat in bed, extreme diaphoresis, and central cyanosis. On that particular moment, I also
observed that a healthcare assistant is present at the bedside trying to sit him up. When we asked what

Multi Step Synthesis Of Aspirin
This experiment explored the multi step synthesis of synthesis acetylsalicylic acid commonly known
as aspirin. A common procedure used in organic chemistry labs is multi step synthesis. this procedure
involves a cascade of reactions that ultimately lead to a desire product. The series of reactions begins
with commonly found or readily available reagents which are synthesized into products which can be
used for a secondary reaction, and so on and so forth until the final desired product is synthesized
(Ryerson Department of Chemistry, 2017).
In this experiment the synthesis of aspirin was used to find the importance of the efficiency of
multistep synthesis as well as a means to explore a number or purity tests. The purity tests used in this
experiment were a melting point range test, a thin layer chromatography test, a ferric chloride test, and
infrared spectroscopy.
After the completion of the experiment it was found that the percent yield was 24% which is very low.
This shows the importance of efficiency as the process of making aspirin, is a two step synthesis
(Atienza et al., 2010) and 74% of theoretical product was converted into waste or lost. Also it was
found that the end product was not pure aspirin as the sample of aspirin made failed two purity test.
This revealed that not merely one purity test is not sufficient to denote a substance as pure.

The first step of the synthesis is to take pure methyl salicylate and hydrolyzed into salicylic acid,

The Is A Efficient Mode Of Transportation
Over the years, cycling has been proven to be the cleanest and most efficient mode of transportation,
which explains the increasing demand to further develop its sustainability (Tripodi 2015, p. 143). Bike
sharing systems have provided a means of transportation in dense cities with their minor infrastructure
requirements and promise of a cleaner future. Public bicycle programs have grown in popularity in
recent years because of their initiatives to increase cycle usage, the benefit of connectivity without the
troubles of personal vehicles, and the decrease of environmental impacts as a result of our transport
activities (DeMaio 2009, p. 41). The original concept of these systems had many flaws, but as
technology has developed to improve the tracking system, rapid expansion continues throughout
Europe and across the globe. With growing climate change and the dependence on oil becoming more
of a problem, people are beginning to look towards more responsible ways of living (Vidalis, et al.
2010, p. 1). Driving less is one of the easiest ways to reduce one s carbon footprint, and is a key factor
in the success surrounding increased cycling. In the U.S., over 50 percent of all car trips are five miles
or less (Vidalis, et al. 2010, p. 3). By cutting down on unnecessary car trips, the release of air
pollutants such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and lead could be drastically
reduced in larger cities. The environmental benefits, along with the health aspect

IASB Conceptual Framework

Date: Nov 11, 2017
Dear Sir,
I am writing this report in order to outline one change that I believe needs to be made to the
Conceptual Framework. I have attached the report that details the change and the rationale for the
change for your kind consideration.
Thanking You,

Introduction
The IASB conceptual framework is a framework of theories prepared by a standard setting body
aimed t dealing with practical problems faced by users of financial statements; the characteristics of
accounting information; the elements of financial statements and concepts for measuring and reporting
the elements such as assets and liabilities (Financial Times 2017). The benefit is that uniform
accounting standards can be applied to deal with common accounting problems; have fewer standards
to reduce the volume of standards; help accountants and auditors to resolve accounting issues.
However one of the issues is the going concern assumption, which does not appear to take into
account more serious risks that an enterprise may be associated with such as sustainability risks.
The problem/Change
One of the problems with the conceptual framework is that it does not address the principle of
sustainability within its going concern assumption even in the recent Summary of Tentative Decisions
related to the framework (IFRS 2017). Therefore it is proposed that the conceptual framework

Technology Is An Ever Advancing Science
Technology is an ever advancing science. Throughout time and history, it has progressed from the
most primitive mechanisms to the most computerized mechanics. It has been stomping on an ever
progressing march, from which an end to it would require special instruments to see even the tiniest
glimpse of. However, as the species behind such advancing technology, we must be careful with it or
dire consequences lie in store. It is not exactly certain what kind of consequences would actually occur
should we grow reckless with its power, but many scenarios have been imagined. However, if
something were to go wrong and technology would be free from our reign, what would it do next?
Without technology, where would man go? And without mankind, what would technology do?
Mankind and technology are dependent on each other, in a relationship where one would be lost
without the other. This necessary relationship is explored in Brian Aldiss Who Could Replace Man? c.
1958.

I Have A Dream Speech Analysis
54 years ago, Martin Luther King Jr delivered his famous I have a dream speech , which along with
Lincoln s Gettysburg address are examples of the best oratory works. The two speeches were critical
to the growth and development of America. They come from two men from different backgrounds and
different times but with one common goal, equality for all.
Standing on the same spot as Lincoln did five score years ago, King preached similar themes of
justice, equality and freedom. Lincolns speech was a eulogy to those who died in the battle of
Gettysburg, at the time America was at civil war. Lincoln spoke to a crowd of thousands to inspire
them to keep fighting the war. In comparison to King, who stood before a crowd of over 200,000
people at the Lincoln memorial and shared his dream of a new future for black Americans. The
context of each address has a profound impact upon their purpose and qualities. One distinct quality of
Lincolns speech is that it is structured in chronological order, with each of the three separate
paragraphs encompassing the past, present and future. This is a device used by Lincoln to build up his
audience s attention to the speeches climatic end. This can be compared to Kings structural approach,
where he uses a ladder technique to construct his points in order of ascending importance. Once again
ending strongly with the line: Free at last! Free at last! Thank God almighty we are free at last! Both
methods of structure of the speeches assist in

Film Analysis Of Rear Window Directed By Alfred Hitchcock
Reality is ultimately dependent upon what is seen and how it gets seen. Rear Window, directed by the
renowned Alfred Hitchcock, centers around a temporarily wheelchair bound photographer and his
beautiful, affluent girlfriend, who believe that one of his neighbors has murdered their wife. With the
help of his caretaker and a friend of his, who is a detective, they attempt to prove that the murder did
indeed take place. L.B Jeff Jefferies, played by James Stewart, is the hindered photographer, who is
confined to his apartment. To kill time, Jeff develops the diseased habit of watching his neighbors
through his professional grade camera and lens. His girlfriend, Lisa Carol Fremont, played by Grace
Kelly, is heavily involved in the fashion industry and is well known for her elegance. However, she
deeply in love with Jeff and desperately wants to be a part of his life, even if that means she has to
embark on the unpleasant, and often life threatening, adventures that he goes on for his work. The
neighbor, Lars Thorwald, played by Raymond Burr, is a strained salesman, whose wife is a bed ridden
invalid. He tries to tend to her needs, but it never seems to be satisfactory to her. One night he decides
that he is done nursing her, so he murders her. The audience is brought into a cross courtyard game of
cat and mouse, through the unique perspective of Jeff and his camera lens, and also must deal with the
unnerving abyss of the unseen. Hitchcock uses an unparalleled first person

Character Analysis Of Joe Rantz s The Boys In The Boat
Joe Rantz: From abandoned boy to a victor The nonfiction memoir The Boys in the Boat explores how
Joe Rantz is deeply influenced by positive ideas and actions when in a crew, in love, and in his family.
This story talks about the journey of Joe, an abandoned boy from a child had been fighting for life to
become a successful man, a member of Olympic gold medal in 1936. In addition the pain which
surrounded him; there were also positive factors that helped him to become a victor man in the future.
In this essay, I will discuss the roles of three elements which affected directly to Joe; they are his
rowing team, his family, and his love. The first important factor to influence to Joe s life is his rowing
crew on the boat. Joe from a child who had nothing to a success man; it thanked his team too much.
He stared to join this team when he was a freshman at the University of Washington, from that his life
changed a lot. He had more friends, more relationships, a real job; and this also a motivation for Joe to
begin an independent life and improving living. However, it was very hard to become the main
member of this crew; he had to throughout many selected processes, even there was a once he was
eliminated from his team. Therefore, he tried his best too much to get this opportunity to become a
part of an Olympic crew. Furthermore, Joe s team had to experience too many challenges with
difficulties to get success. They had to train in very poor conditions and their practicing was not
stable. There have been times when they have lost the opportunity to become the Olympic team of
America. By the time with his team, Joe had more experiences of life, thought of other people and
perhaps this was the first time in his life there was teammate who loved and thought of him. They
were from normal freshmen boys to the team won Gold Medal of Olympic; this winning affected Joe s
life so much. The author said that: In those final few meters, Joe and the boys had finally forged the
prize they had sought all season, the prize Joe had sought nearly all his life. Each had entirely given
himself up to be a part of something larger and more powerful and more important than himself

Roman Sculpture
Roman sculpture and painting differed mostly for the fact that the status were used to record major
events and also as realistic portrait. As per the paintings, they were used much as decor and to cover
walls than anything else.
The picture depicts a heroic sculpture of Augustus, a military leader who was the first Emperor of the
Roman Empire, controlling Imperial Rome from 27 BC until his death in AD 14 (Hays, 2008). Roman
sculptures were focused in representing the real form of those being portrayed. However, in the case
of rulers, they attempted to make it strong god like images. Unlike the Greek, which usually tried to

(Shelby, 2016). Roman paintings were used mostly as wall decoration. They were painted directly on
the walls of their rooms, and also on portable panels (Gunther, n.d.). The main idea was to bring their
windowless interior dark rooms to life, totally changing aspects of these living spaces. A variety of
painting art forms is seeing throughout Roman ancient history. Nevertheless, Frescoes was the most
popular approach seeing in the interior design of ancient Roman buildings. Fresco painting, method of
painting water based pigments on freshly applied plaster, usually on wall surfaces. The colours, which
are made by grinding dry powder pigments in pure water, dry and set with the plaster to become a
permanent part of the wall (Britannica, 2014). These fresco paintings represented images from the
Greek scenery, Roman mythology. Although landscapes were mostly used to give the impression of a
window view. As commonly seen within the Romans, such art paintings were equally a privilege of
the wealthy ones. There are four styles seen throughout the history of Roman paintings:

Dirty Dance Lighting
Dirty Dancing
Dirty Dancing is a 1987 film directed by Emile Ardolino, produced by Linda Gottlieb, edited by Peter
C. Frank, and filmed by cinematographer Jeff Jur. Dirty Dancing stars principal actors Jennifer Grey
as Baby, Patrick Swayze as Johnny, Jerry Orbach as Dr. Jake Houseman (Baby s dad), Kelly Bishop as
Marjorie Houseman (Baby s mom), Cynthia Rhodes as Penny, and Max Cantor as Robbie.
Introduction
Dirty Dancing is a film based on Baby Houseman, a 17 year old girl who is spending her last care free
summer at a resort hotel in the Catskills with her family, before she joins the Peace Corps. Baby is
bored by the older guests at the resort and has nothing to do, until one night, when she hears ... Show

For example, when Baby is finally getting the dance moves, when Baby and Johnny meet in the room
and become intimate, and in the second intimate scene between Baby and Johnny. These scenes used
close ups because they foreshadowed the relationship developing between Baby and Johnny and the
future events to come; these scenes helped the audience get into their relationship. With the use of
close ups, the audience was really able to see the little subtle movements Baby and Johnny were doing
via their facial expressions and able to see the chemistry they had. In addition, in serious or significant
scenes close ups were used. Examples of this are when Baby is crying with her dad, when Baby and
Lisa are bonding, when Dr. Houseman finds out about Robbie, and when Dr. Houseman accepts
Johnny. In these scenes, the director utilized close ups because they were important moments in the
movie. In the scene where Baby is crying with her dad, her dad realizes he messed up too by judging
Johnny off the bat even if he s too prideful to admit it. In the scene with Baby and Lisa, they use a
close up because this is the first moment Lisa and Baby are getting along and bonding as sisters. In
that scene, you can see how Lisa is trying to sympathize with Baby and what she s feeling. And in the
scene with Robbie and when Dr. Houseman accepts Johnny close ups were used because it changed or
affected the entire movie s

D) There is generally no option to continue the lease at a rent lower than market value.
E) There is no arrangement such that the risks and liabilities involved with the ownership of the asset
would be transferred to the Lessee.
From the above classification we can see that all the points indicate that the leases undertaken by
David Jones Ltd as a Lessee are Operating Leases or Finance leases and can be determined using the
steps above. Being such a big company, David Jones Ltd has both Operating and Financial leases and
they are taken mainly to run the firm s stores and warehouses. Under the annual report for the half
year ended 2013 it is clearly evident that the cost of leasing activities for David Jones Ltd has
increased by 4.17mn. Payments made under operating leases, where the lease agreement includes
predetermined fixed rate increases, are recognised in the Statement of Comprehensive Income on a
straight line basis over the term of the lease. Other operating lease payments are expensed as incurred.
Lease incentives received are recognised in the Statement of Comprehensive Income as an integral
part of the total lease expense and spread over the lease term.
Treatment of Leases
The determination of whether an arrangement is or contains a lease is based on the substance of the
arrangement and requires an assessment of whether the fulfilment of the arrangement is dependent on
the use of a specific asset or assets and whether the arrangement

There are numerous numbers of novels and books that offer different portrayals of the female gender
and femininity in the early nineteenth century, each novel shedding a different light on women, their
gender role, and the definition of femininity during this time period. The first thought that pops into
most people s minds is Mary Wollstonecraft s A Vindication of the Rights of Woman or any Jane
Austen novel. People do not typically think of Mary Shelley s Frankenstein. Nonetheless Frankenstein
offers us the reader an extremely well portrayal of the female gender in the early nineteenth century
while also providing us with the cautionary tell on why no man should ever attempt to play God for
the reason that only God can play God. In this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In more common terms femininity is to be passive, eager to please, male dependent, and
unenlightened. However the characteristic of femininity and being a women most stressed is that
women and femininity are own by men and masculinity, in short all women belong to men. While
reading her daughter, Mary Shelley s novel Frankenstein it can be argued that she used Wollstonecraft
s definition of femininity to create characters such as Elizabeth Lavenza, Justine Moritz, and Caroline
Frankenstein. Each of these female characters displays more than one of the characteristics of
femininity. One character that displays all of the characteristics is Elizabeth Lavenza. Elizabeth is the
only female character to appear in all three volumes of the novel. She is also the cousin, and wife to
Frankenstein s main character Victor. She embodies every characteristic of femininity and the female
gender described by Wollstonecraft. This description of Elizabeth is She was docile and good
tempered, yet gay and playful as a summer insect. . (Shelley, Pg. 20) That was Victor s description of
Elizabeth when they were children; she remains that way throughout the entirety of the novel. That
quotation easily supports Wollstonecraft s argument that women are taught from infancy that they are
to remain docile. The description describes Elizabeth as being

The Trials And Tribulations Of Teenagers In Grease
The characters in Grease are high school students struggling with the trials and tribulations of
teenagers. Sandy Olsen and Danny Zuko are the main characters who experience an on again/off again
romance. They are from different sides of the tracks and fail to understand the other. The T birds and
Pink Ladies are the friends of Danny and Sandy. These gangs have their own code of conduct which
baffles Sandy. Many other characters fill the scenes with teenage antics.
Danny Zuko, the male lead character, is the leader of the T Birds. He is all consumed with being cool.
Even though Danny is a senior at Rydell High, academics are not a concern of his. His concentration
is that of many teenage boys: to find a job, to buy a car, and

Endgame and Act Without Words
Beckett: Endgame
Hamm is horrofied at the notion that existence is a recurring matter and therefore is cyclic; that
beginnings and endings (60 62) may be amalgamated in the grand scheme of things and that life will
start afresh again. Nevertheless, the contradictions confuse his desires. He is terrified of the flea and
rat that Clov finds and wants to exterminate them in case humanity might start from there all over
again, but he also suggests that he and Clov go South to other
mammals. He wants to be left alone, but clings to Clov and does anything he can to pull him back into
the room. Most confusingly, he believes that nature is changing, though all evidence indicates that it

The endgame in chess stands for a series of moves at the end of the game, one whose outcome is
usually decided before the ceremony of the endgame occurs. Beckett was a chess player and, in
Endgame, compared the chess concept to the endgame of life, in which death is the inevitable
outcome. The characters or actors enact repetitive rituals that are part of their endgame. Like a losing
player who drags his piece through the final moves even though his demise is now inevitable, the
characters make routines out of their lives and do whatever it takes to get through one more day, one
more move, even though the game is lost and has lost whatever appeal it may have once had. Beckett
puts the motif of chess in accordance with certain movements on stage. Hamm, who every now and
then utters the line, Me to play, (18, 96,98) can be perceived as the King, the most powerful and yet
the most vulnerable piece on the board. His movement is rather restricted, and he relies on Clov for
protection in the centre. Clov might be considered as the figure of the Queen, since he can move more
easily than anyone else, but his erratic, staggering way of walking is more suitable to the L shaped
movement of the Knight, whereas Nagg and
Nell are relatively insignificant and valueless Pawns, appearing nearly only when the King calls for
them. Nell s

Scientific management is defined by (Robbins et al., 2012) as an approach that involves using
scientific methods to define the one best way for a job to be done . Frederick W. Taylor is said to be
the forefather of scientific management, during his time many people criticised Taylor and his work,
however it is easy to see that many of his approaches are used in contemporary management systems.
This essay will provide a review of the article The Ideas of Frederick W. Taylor , Academy of
Management Review (Locke, E., 1982) which discusses the positives and negatives of Taylor s theory.

Locke (1982) also articulates Taylor s major criticisms in his journal article; degradation of the
worker, loss of complete skills, authoritarianism or dictatorship power given to management,
exploitation of workers and dishonesty. Locke concludes his article stating that even though it has
been 65 years since Taylor s death and many more theorists of business management have risen and
fallen, Frederick W. Taylor s research and findings are still used in today s business systems (1982,
p.22).
Over the years many articles have been written regarding scientific management and Frederick w.
Taylor, 3 examples of these articles will be analysed and discussed in the further paragraphs of this
essay. Wrege, C. D. and Stotka, A. M. wrote an article concerning the relationship between Taylor and
his assistant Morris L. Cooke and the evidence that shows Taylor used much of Cooke s own research
and study for his publication of Principles of Scientific Management . Blake A. M. and Moseley J. L.
undertook research which discovered that Taylor s principles are still being used in business systems
one hundred years after Taylor s death. Darmody, Peter B. wrote his article regarding Henry L. Gantt
and Frederick Taylor as the pioneers of scientific management, Darmody speaks highly of Taylor and
Gantt, and agrees with many of their opinions.

Alcohol And Hepatocellular Tumor
The liver is the organ responsible for filtering chemicals and metabolizing drugs. It also makes
proteins responsible for blood clotting and other functions. When alcohol reaches the liver, it produces
a dangerous enzyme known as acetaldehyde. The liver needs water to do its basic functions. Alcohol
acts as a diuretic and dehydrates the body, depriving the liver of the water it needs to function. When
acetaldehyde and other alcoholic toxins build up in the liver, they can cause a variety of health
problems.
One of the most commonly known problems of the liver caused by alcohol is hepatocellular
carcinoma (HCC), a type of liver cancer. There are other types of liver cancers, such as
cholangiocarcinoma, a cancer of the bile duct, and hepatic angiosarcoma, a rare malignant
mesenchymal tumor. Both of these cancers are not caused by alcohol abuse. HCC is caused by
cirrhosis or other long term damage to the liver. Cirrhosis is most often caused by alcohol abuse,
hemochromatosis, or a hepatitis B or C infection. Symptoms of HCC include abdominal pain, easy
bruising, enlarged abdomen, jaundiced skin or eyes, and unexplained weight loss. Many tests are

and ascites, spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, hepatic encephalopathy, portal vein hypertension,
hepatorenal and hepatopulmonary syndrome, hypersplenism, and liver cancer. One of the most
common treatments of cirrhosis is a liver transplant. However, alcoholics have to be sober for six
months to prove that they are serious about taking care of their new liver and staying sober after the

Does Toothpaste Expire Essay
Does Toothpaste Expire? Some people have the habit of buying more items than they need from the
grocery, especially when they re on sale. Like most consumable products, toothpaste is one of the
items that go on sale when the store has a big stock to dispose. Consumers who are careful about
stocking on consumable products may wonder does toothpaste expire?
You may be surprised to find out that toothpaste, like food and medicine, does have a limited shelf
life. Toothpastes containing fluoride are required to be marked with an expiration date, which is
typically two years after their manufacture date. Now the next question is: Is using expired toothpaste
bad for the health?

Does toothpaste expire? Well, after two years, the fluoride content and effectiveness in your toothpaste
may not be guaranteed by the manufacturers, so your precious teeth may become vulnerable to plaque
build up and tooth decay. Therefore, it is always best to use a fresh tube of toothpaste when brushing
your teeth to ensure oral and dental health.
Part 3: What to Do with Expired Toothpaste?
Sometimes you buy an extra tube of toothpaste and forget about it. Does toothpaste expire? you
wonder. By the time you see it at the back of your medicine cabinet, it has most likely expired. Do you
use it or throw it away? Well, if you want good, healthy teeth, you better use a new tube of toothpaste.
But you don t have to throw away the old one. Here are some clever ways to make use of old
toothpaste:
1. Clean the Sink
Toothpaste is a natural abrasive because it contains ingredients such as silica and baking soda, which
can make your sink and faucet shine sparkling clean. Use a cleaning brush to scrub the sink with some

  • 2. Archetypal Journey In Tim OBrien s On The Rainy Road Morals, or a lack thereof, define the character of individuals. As Tim, the protagonist of On the Rainy Road by Tim O Brien discovers, personal morals are difficult concepts to adhere to when faced with challenging circumstances. Tim is a young man living in Minnesota, and by his own admission, had the world dicked...summa cum laude... and a full ride scholarship for grad studies at Harvard (O Brien). In an unfortunate turn of events, the army drafts Tim to fight in the Vietnam War, something that he is staunchly against. Due to his beliefs against the war, Tim attempts to leave his home and move to Canada, eventually coming back to fight after a period of self reflection. Through this figurative journey , the author uses the fundamental plot archetype of the journey from innocence to experience to demonstrate how adversity exposes the inherent human flaws in even the best people. Tim s archetypal journey begins in his home in Minnesota, where his naivety and resultant innocence are easily apparent through his personal opinions about morality. The archetypal journey typically consists of five major steps, being; an innocent start in a familiar environment, followed by a descent into danger and a battle with demons throughout which the hero gains experience, ultimately ending with a return home (TVDSB). As Tim confesses, he had taken a modest stand against the war , however he assumes that the problems of killing and dying did not fall within my special province ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Library Advantages And Disadvantages Introduction According to Metzger. M.C (2006), Academic Libraries continually adapt to the technological advances and administrative challenges that follow . The staff plays an important role between the information and the users. The staff being professional, or paraprofessional should possess the knowledge of online databases, knowledge of all web features etc. Besides that, the systems may get updated, replaced regularly and hence learning new or upgraded online resources must be an integral part of every position in the library (Eells. L.L, Jaguszewski, J.M, 2008). I would like to take Academic libraries as the Library setting. There are many disadvantages that arise when the Librarians are not aware of the technical knowledge in the academic libraries. In 1994, though there are computers, Librarians used to function without the basic understanding of computers in the campuses. The presence of the internet on campus was not supported by training programs or manuals. Along with the technological advancements, Library staff came to know the importance of adapting themselves to technology. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 4. Mrs Helenne Alving And Ghosts Plenty published by David Hare in 1978 and Ghosts published by Henrik Ibsen in 1881, might have almost a gap of hundred years in publication, but they are both plays that attest the intertemporal issue of society s pressure on the woman. In the notes of A Doll s house, in 1878, Ibsen writes A woman cannot be herself in contemporary society, it is an exclusively male society with laws drafted by men, and with counsel and judges who judge feminine conduct from the male point of view. The female protagonist in Ghosts, Mrs Helene Alving, has been influenced by the society s need of forming women that are first, obedient daughters, then, obedient wives, dutiful mothers, but in general, obedient individuals of that society s ideals, conventions and traditions. In Plenty, the audience gets to examine years of Susan Traherne s life, from her World War II activity as a courier in the French Renaissance to her emotional privation in the post Suez British plenty . Even after the war, Susan cannot sustain a fulfilling life since the society s ideals and conventions disharmonize with her own opinions and purpose. The common element between Mrs Alving and Susan is that as women they are expected to fit into a certain role in the real life, directed by the society itself, a life that diminishes their personal fulfilment. To begin with, Ghosts is a play that does not solely examine the society s pressure on the women, but the impact of society on every individual regardless of gender. ... • 5. Necessity of Dropping the Atomic Bomb to End World War II Professor Robert James Maddox argues that the atomic bomb was necessary to force the Japanese army to finally surrender and avoid a costly and heavy casualty war with Japan. On August 6, 1945, the United States dropped the first atomic bomb over Hiroshima, Japan. Three days after the initial bombing, another nuclear weapon was dropped on Nagasaki, a main Japanese city. President Truman and Professor Maddox both had the same belief that these bombs were crucial to Japan surrendering in the war. Maddox mentions that Japan was a beaten nation by the summer of 1945 and conventional bombings had reduced many of their cities to almost nothing. He goes on to say that although many rational calculations had Japan listed as a beaten nation, their military was fully prepared to fight and even claimed to encourage invasions in order to make the United States suffer severe casualties. With the use of kamikazes and even suicide missions to destroy American ships, the Japanese could be expected to defend their nation at virtually all costs and fight the war hard until it was over. The United States and President Truman declared that if Japan did not surrender, our nation would use the atomic bomb on their country. There were roughly 193,500 anticipated casualties and according to Robert James Maddox, these figures were never mentioned to President Truman. A second myth that has been circulating is that many of the President s military advisers told him that the use of atomic bombs would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Assassination Of John Brown There are many definitions of terrorism and no one can be completely certain what it really means. Despite his actions at Pottawatomie Creek and Harper s Ferry, John Brown certainly had legitimate reasons to carry out his attacks. Throughout his childhood, John had learned to be against slavery. His father was a deeply religious man who believed owning people was against God s word. Even as a child and teenager John was mature, enough to be an adult. So when he saw slaves beaten by their owners, he knew it was wrong. As a teenager, John proceeded to become closer to the lord. Soon John was an adult and still believed that slavery was wrong. The murder of Elijah P. Lovejoy set John over the edge and he vowed that he would end slavery. In the years that followed, John Brown s vow became unfulfilled. As they were making their way across a railroad. A person, recognizing John, ran off to try to warn the others. John s men shot to kill. What is ironic about that situation? The first man they killed in Harper s Ferry was a free black man. Having no remorse over the dead, John kept tromping onward. He took over Harper s Ferry as planned but no slaves came to help. In fact, the slaves were among the ones to be horrified at John s actions. Eventually, the military came and wiped out all of John s men including two of his sons. John was captured and had to be brought on a stretcher to his hearing. They announced him guilty of all his crimes and he was later sentenced to be hanged. John s actions caused a ripple throughout the north. Northerners looked up to him as a hero. He inspired the north to make their moves to stop slavery. He showed them that if one man can stand up to slavery imagine what would happen if all the north stood up too. John Brown was a freedom ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The American Businessman Essay The American Businessman When you think of your average businessman, the first thought probably is a tall and slender man, who always wears black suits and is a wall street shark. However, this is not the case for Eric Merchant. He is a large, jolly man, who always wears tee shirts that relate to cars and trucks. Every weeknight, after Eric comes home from his job as a business owner, he starts to work again. He is a day in and day out workaholic, he always has something to do and time to do it. He elaborates, I can t just do nothing, that doesn t seem practical to me, Eric has always been a devoted worker for his own personal satisfaction, and for his two children, Maddy and Masen. Before his business, Merchant Automotive, became his priority in work, he was a mechanic for a Todd Wenzel dealership. However, he still ran his own small business on the side while working there. He bought parts from their supply manager and resold them on his own website. They knew what I was doing, they just didn t care because I wasn t competing with them. His managers hadn t cared because they weren t selling anything online, and therefore saw no problem with Eric doing so. Along with that, he would do speciality mechanic work on large diesel trucks out of his own garage. Eric had tools and knowledge to perform maintenance on specific vehicles that almost every other mechanic shop could not do. Holden has a different view on the world, where he portrays it as a phony and corrupt place. He fears that his sister, Phoebe, will fall into this world and lose the innocence that he wishes he still obtained. Holden mentions to her that he aspires to be a catcher in the rye. Holden reminisces about many memories spent with him before his passing throughout many chapters in the book. It is evident that there is pain and sorrow in Holden s flashbacks. Holden was so distraught that on the night he found out of Allie s passing, he smashed all the windows in his garage and was hospitalized the day of the funeral. When Holden talks about Allie, he feels guilty and misses his presence. He even says, What I did, I started talking, sort of out loud, to Allie. I do that sometimes when I get very depressed. • 11. The Tragedy of Shakespeare s Othello William Shakespeare s play The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice provides an intriguing perspective regarding matters related to race, envy, and treachery. Othello is a powerful and influential Moorish general in the Venetian army, Desdemona is his wife, much younger than him and the reason for which the general is hated, and Iago is Othello s seemingly trusted lieutenant. The relationship between these three characters is complex and it actually one of the principal reason for which the play holds a great deal of stratagems that puts each of the individuals in a delicate position requiring more or less moral attitudes from them. While Iago appears to be a good tactician, he is willing to do everything in his power in order to upgrade his position, regardless of the effects that his actions might have on other individuals. His fury is amplified by the fact that he believes that Othello slept with his wife, Emilia. This information points toward the idea that Iago would have second thoughts about working against Othello if the circumstances would not force him to do so. Othello and Desdemona are trustful individuals in a society which does not have place for such people. In spite of the fact that they are determined to put across true feelings regarding how they feel, the fact that they yield to Iago s pressures to befriend them plays a destructive role in their lives. Desdemona is one of the principal reasons for which Iago is not promoted, taken into account that her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. The Foundation for Capitalism Theory Freedom is simply the right of an individual to control his or hers own actions, that aids in the development of humanity. As freedom reflects back to capitalism, people within their respective class who obtain money are the individuals who whole heartedly enjoy real freedom. However, is it really considered freedom if there are restrictions attached to one s freedom? The simplest things such as the production and distribution of goods and services or even the supply of new technological advancements, are ran and operated by a group or class of people. This group is known as the capitalist class. Those who work to produce and distribute the goods created by the capitalist class profit and thrive off of the labor exploited by the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What does this mean for people of a higher class or people of wealth? People of the upper class are lowered to the same financial and economic status of the individuals in the middle class. The state controls are means of production. So individuals cannot own their own business, cars, homes, etc., because the state owns everything. Placing all the power within the states is an issue for some individuals, as well as upgrading certain class and down grading another. Although communism and socialism share some of the same qualities, they also differ in certain areas. So how then, do the ideas of Friedman measure up to the real world events displayed throughout? There can be flaws found in Friedman s arguments more especially with his belief of politics and economics being both separate and largely unconnected. If an economy is weak, chances are the political leaders are not that strong. However if the political leadership is strong, so should the economy be due to the excellent decision making of the country s leaders. Individual freedom is however a political problem. The restraints placed on many of the activities, and actions citizens are allowed to enjoy and participate have negative freedom. This type of freedom prevents an individual from taking pleasure in whatever they choose, dwindling away their sense of free will. Political leaders are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Parents May Not Be Licensed Essay In the essay Licensing Parents, LaFollette argues that the state should require all parents to be licensed (182). Though LaFollette considers some theoretical and practical objections to his claim, he gives no particular attention to how an activity could be precisely defined as potentially harmful to others, what specific competence would be required for an activity to be done safely, and how reliably such competence could be determined. In this paper, I will argue that the difficulty of clearly defining the three criteria for an activity to be licensed undermines LaFollette s assertion that parenting ought to be licensed. Consequently, because parenting is an activity potentially very harmful to children (184) and a parent must be competent if he is to avoid harming his children (185), LaFollette concludes that the general criteria for regulatory licensing can be applied to parents. However, there are several theoretical and practical objections to LaFollette s proposal, but he argues that they all fail to undermine the proposal. In the beginning of his argument, LaFollette claims that parenting is an activity potentially very harmful to children (184). However, LaFollette does not explicitly justify how parenting could be precisely defined as potentially harmful to children. In other words, LaFollette does not explicitly establish what comprises exactly the minimum amount of harm that makes the activity potentially harmful or very harmful. Their unique war tactics and diplomatic approaches are a few things that the Mongols used fastidiously. However, after Khubilai Khan launched the first invasion of Japan, the Mongols realized that some of their methods had to be changed if they wanted to conquer Japan. Many sources group the Mongol invasions of Japan together, and leave no discernment between the two invasions in 1274 and 1281. Even though the Japanese were outnumbered, they had erected walls, six feet tall, about the coastal line. This allowed the Japanese to fend off the Mongol forces. This may have been because the Japanese realized that the Mongols tried not to get into close combat, and having a wall which the enemy would have to climb and fight to get over, the Mongols would be forced to pursue the Japanese coast with some hand to hand combat. In Antarctica, ice dynamics has been the dominant contributor to the mass loss in recent decades, but surface mass balance signal exhibits inter annual fluctuations large enough to significantly modulate the mass loss. Skinner and his colleagues (Gass Larry, 2008), learning or a change of behaviour on the part of the learner, is brought about by a process known as operant conditioning which is the result of repeated training. Operant means voluntary behaviour which is the result of learner s own free will and is not forced by any outsider or thing (Ortega, 2009). The learner will demonstrate the new behaviour first as a response to a system of a reward or punishment, and finally it will become an automatic response. Behaviourists believe that learning a language is no different from learning anything else. It becomes a habit by the stimulus response reinforcement repetition process (Cook, 2001). The behaviourists also claim that we learn by imitation and by association (Lightbown Spada, 2006). However, psycholinguists argue that imitation is not enough because it is not only the mechanical repetition but also natural exposure that children acquire language (Cook, 2001). Therefore, from the behaviourist approach, language acquisition can be seen as a stimulus response process. Children learn language by immitation and analogy. The roles of imitation, repetition, reinforcement, and motivation are essential in learning the language. The First Language Acquisition is thus the result of nature which based on practicing. In order to move towards a peaceful future, governments must acknowledge and respond to the wrongs and injustices of the past. In fact, many argue that memory is crucially important as a response to past injustices, especially when dealing with human rights violations. A common procedure used in organic chemistry labs is multi step synthesis. this procedure involves a cascade of reactions that ultimately lead to a desire product. The series of reactions begins with commonly found or readily available reagents which are synthesized into products which can be used for a secondary reaction, and so on and so forth until the final desired product is synthesized (Ryerson Department of Chemistry, 2017). In this experiment the synthesis of aspirin was used to find the importance of the efficiency of multistep synthesis as well as a means to explore a number or purity tests. The purity tests used in this experiment were a melting point range test, a thin layer chromatography test, a ferric chloride test, and infrared spectroscopy. After the completion of the experiment it was found that the percent yield was 24% which is very low. This shows the importance of efficiency as the process of making aspirin, is a two step synthesis (Atienza et al., 2010) and 74% of theoretical product was converted into waste or lost. Also it was found that the end product was not pure aspirin as the sample of aspirin made failed two purity test. Thanking You, Sincerely, Your Name, Student, Name of University Course Name Introduction The IASB conceptual framework is a framework of theories prepared by a standard setting body aimed t dealing with practical problems faced by users of financial statements; the characteristics of accounting information; the elements of financial statements and concepts for measuring and reporting the elements such as assets and liabilities (Financial Times 2017). The benefit is that uniform accounting standards can be applied to deal with common accounting problems; have fewer standards to reduce the volume of standards; help accountants and auditors to resolve accounting issues. However one of the issues is the going concern assumption, which does not appear to take into account more serious risks that an enterprise may be associated with such as sustainability risks. The problem/Change One of the problems with the conceptual framework is that it does not address the principle of sustainability within its going concern assumption even in the recent Summary of Tentative Decisions related to the framework (IFRS 2017). Therefore it is proposed that the conceptual framework ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Technology Is An Ever Advancing Science Technology is an ever advancing science. Throughout time and history, it has progressed from the most primitive mechanisms to the most computerized mechanics. It has been stomping on an ever progressing march, from which an end to it would require special instruments to see even the tiniest glimpse of. However, as the species behind such advancing technology, we must be careful with it or dire consequences lie in store. It is not exactly certain what kind of consequences would actually occur should we grow reckless with its power, but many scenarios have been imagined. However, if something were to go wrong and technology would be free from our reign, what would it do next? Without technology, where would man go? And without mankind, what would technology do? Mankind and technology are dependent on each other, in a relationship where one would be lost without the other. This necessary relationship is explored in Brian Aldiss Who Could Replace Man? c. 1958. In the story, A field minder robot is turning the topsoil of a field as morning dawns. It then went down to its sector s seed distributor to request an order of seed potatoes. However, the store for such seed potatoes to be accessed is locked. Due to the hierarchy of brain classes they have, from which the field minder is a Class Three brain while the distributor is a Class Five, the field minder states its supremacy to the distributor, and thus goes to see why the unlocker has not unlocked the store. I Have A Dream Speech Analysis 54 years ago, Martin Luther King Jr delivered his famous I have a dream speech , which along with Lincoln s Gettysburg address are examples of the best oratory works. The two speeches were critical to the growth and development of America. They come from two men from different backgrounds and different times but with one common goal, equality for all. Standing on the same spot as Lincoln did five score years ago, King preached similar themes of justice, equality and freedom. Lincolns speech was a eulogy to those who died in the battle of Gettysburg, at the time America was at civil war. Lincoln spoke to a crowd of thousands to inspire them to keep fighting the war. In comparison to King, who stood before a crowd of over 200,000 people at the Lincoln memorial and shared his dream of a new future for black Americans. The context of each address has a profound impact upon their purpose and qualities. One distinct quality of Lincolns speech is that it is structured in chronological order, with each of the three separate paragraphs encompassing the past, present and future. This is a device used by Lincoln to build up his audience s attention to the speeches climatic end. This can be compared to Kings structural approach, where he uses a ladder technique to construct his points in order of ascending importance. Once again ending strongly with the line: Free at last! Free at last! Thank God almighty we are free at last! Both methods of structure of the speeches assist in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The endgame in chess stands for a series of moves at the end of the game, one whose outcome is usually decided before the ceremony of the endgame occurs. Beckett was a chess player and, in Endgame, compared the chess concept to the endgame of life, in which death is the inevitable outcome. The characters or actors enact repetitive rituals that are part of their endgame. Like a losing player who drags his piece through the final moves even though his demise is now inevitable, the characters make routines out of their lives and do whatever it takes to get through one more day, one more move, even though the game is lost and has lost whatever appeal it may have once had. Beckett puts the motif of chess in accordance with certain movements on stage. Hamm, who every now and then utters the line, Me to play, (18, 96,98) can be perceived as the King, the most powerful and yet the most vulnerable piece on the board. His movement is rather restricted, and he relies on Clov for protection in the centre.
