The European Impact on Native American Technology Essay
The European Impact on Native American Technology
When European exploration led to the populating of the Americas, it was described as the event with
one of the greatest ecological impacts in history. The force behind this impact was the mass movement
of people and their behavior s toward their New World . It only stands to reason that a clash would
occur with the natives of these lands. One of the areas with the greatest conflict was the field of
technology.
Scientifically, when the cultures of 15th century Europe and the natives in the Americas are
concerned, the two are fairly alike. In Europe,a great deal of work was done in astronomy. Of course
this was because it was a necessity for navigation. From the studies of the ... Show more content on

Consequently, there was no real understanding of the human body and how it functioned. At this
period in time, such remedies as using leeches for blood lettings were common practice in
Europe(McGovern, 75).
This is one area which contrasts greatly with the native cultures. The Indians of the Americas were far
ahead of the Europeans of their time. Because of the closeness and respect for nature, many natural
cures were used. The Aztecs had even gone as far as surgery to remove organs and even work on the
brain. The Indians also took much better care of themselves pysically. This was done by a better diet
and exercise. In some cultures a type of martial arts was taught beginning in adolesence, to keep in
shape both mentally and pysically. Despite all of these advancements, they were powerless to the new
and unfamilliar European diseases.
Another area in which the Indians thrived was that of agriculture and their understanding of the earth.
Europeans had little knowledge of agriculture, or chose not to use what they did have. Europe was in a
state of agricultural depression. Most of the soil was completely exhausted due to overuse and general
mistreatment of the land. Both activities which continued in America.
Agriculture served as the material foundation for the natives. Corn was the heart of this foundation
because it was so versatile. In

Personality theory
Extraversion is one of the five core personality traits described in the big five theory of personality.
This trait is characterized by sociability, assertiveness, emotional expressiveness and excitability.
People who are high in this trait are often described as being outgoing ad talkative, while those low in
this trait are described as quiet and reserved. An extroverted disposition ; concern with what is outside
the self rather what is inside.
Introversion is one of the major personality traits identified in many theories of personality. People
who are introverted tend to be inward turning, or focused more on internal thoughts, feelings and
moods rather than seeking out external stimulation. Introversion is genereally viewed as ... Show more

Individuals who score low on neuroticism partially those who are also high on extraversion generally
report more happiness and satisfaction with their lives.
When it comes to neuroticism, Felicia to me seems to be in the middle of it. I wouldn t say she scores
a high level because her case study doesn t show signs of anxiety, moodiness, worry, envy or jealousy.
Although Felicia doesn t show none of those signs she is very self conscious and she also seems to be
shy. The reason I say Felicia is shy is because in the case study it states that she sees waitressing as a
means of practicing acting and she will often try out different roles and characters while working. The
typical roles she will play at work are loud, very gregarious, and at times flamboyant which is the
opposite of her personality, as most of her friends would describe her as shy and reserved.
During auditions Felicia is noted to also be very out going and full of energy. She can easily project a
full range of emotions. This statement shows me that Felicia has traits of a high neuroticism level but
not enough to say she is on that level plus there are things that are present in a low neuroticism level
like being calm and in her case study it says she will go along with things with no complaining and
shows no sign of being depressed, she seems happy with things besides

The Most Brutal Dictators Of Jeff Stalin
I agree with this quote the most even though it was said by one of the most brutal dictators in the
world, Josef Stalin. Education is an extremely powerful object that you need to use carefully. In other
words supply the student with the correct and fact based answer rather than an answer that you think is
correct.
In America a good education is the difference between working at Walmart, and being a computer
programer at Google. A good education is one that has these qualities, it is enticing to the student, it
prepares the student for the world to come, and provides the student with facts that they can make
their own opinions on. Enticing is key to keep the student focus on school rather than other things. If

My Guest Star Featured Is Sara Picklesimer
Recently this week, we ve been discussing perception and how it impacts the way we communicate in
our daily lives. Interestingly enough, this episode of COMMPENDIUM hosted by Professor Stephen
Stifano focused on this subject and its attributes. Our guest star featured is Sara Picklesimer, a
University of Louisville graduate and now currently a doctoral student at the University of
Connecticut in the field of communication. She was born in Pinesville, Kentucky, and started off as a
biology major before realizing her passion was communication after taking her first public speaking
course. Despite being a shy and reserved individual, Ms. Picklesimer found that she actually enjoyed
and was surprisingly good at this field. She now teaches a gender and communication course here at
the University of Connecticut, which ties in gender through music and a variety of other aspects in
relation to communication. She gives us her expert lecture on two primary topics related to perception:
thin slicing and the impact and effect of gender on the ways in which we communicate.
Professor Stifano mentioned some of the foundations of perception that we have discussed in our
lecture, including selective attention and perceptual filters. The other aspects revealed in this podcast
are thin slicing and gender. All of these elements tie into each other in terms of communicating
effectively and making decisions, and what make up perception. We learned that perception is

The Last Winter Film Analysis
ABSTRACT
Environmental change is a severe issue in the world as many parts of the world strive towards
ensuring that the environment remains habitable and with minimal detrimental changes (Hamilton,
2011). Furthermore, environmental evolution is taught in most educational centers to ensure that
people understand how to conserve the environment. However, many people perceive it as a dull
subject and do not give it the attention it deserves; but this situation is changed by the number of
movies, documentaries, movies and TV series that have been made to explain the dangers or benefits
of environmental change more creatively.
This study will seek to describe one such movie and discuss the different factors, assumptions,
impacts, and scientific accuracies to the same regard. It will also put into consideration the truths,
consequences, and facts that have been portrayed in the movie. The Last Winter, whose release was in
2007, is a movie that explains environmental changes based on global warming. Its effects and shall
discuss it and try to understand the angle that the producer took in conveying the ecological change
message as well as point out whether it provides a solution for the problem so discovered.
FILM PLOT
The Last Winter is a disaster movie, which bases its storyline on global warming as an event that
brings strange events that could not be explained entirely easily. Oil exploration is one of the
significant activities happening in the area as a team of engineers

The Walt Disney Concert Hall is Leonard Koscianski s...
The Walt Disney Concert Hall is an astounding work of architecture. Leonard Koscianski finished
designing this work in 1991, but the process of construction lasted almost a decade. The cost of the
building ended up exceeding the original figures, which slowed construction. With donations from
private sources, including the Disney family and The Walt Disney Company, The Walt Disney Concert
Hall finally opened on October 24, 2003. The cost of the concert hall was roughly 274 million dollars,
and seats 2,265 people. The concert hall is located in downtown Los Angeles, California. It was the
fourth hall to join the Los Angeles Music Center. The concert hall is in no way normal but that is what
Frank Gehry is known for. Gehry s architectural works fall under the deconsructivism category.
Deconstructivism encourages radical freedom of form and the open manifestation of complexity in a
building rather than strict attention to functional concerns and conventional design elements
When looking at The Walt Disney Concert Hall from the outside you see a series of corrugated
stainless steel panels covering irregularly shaped appendages. All of the appendages are
interconnected and have glass between some of them to soften the look of all of the steel panels. The
concert hall definitely stands out against the other buildings that surround it. The concert hall is in the
heart of the city with all of the concrete buildings surrounding it. The center of the building looks like

The Worst Thing For America Essay
Donald Trump: The Worst Thing For America
The election of 2016 will always be remembered. This election will go into the history books written
one of two ways; either as one of the best elections to happen in modern time or as the nation s worst
election of all time. Donald Trump, our president elect, won with an unbelieveable electoral map. He
battled the many other possible candidates that could have been president and then he beat Hillary
Clinton. Trump, someone who idols Vladimir Putin, insults everyone among the nation including
religions, an entire mexican population, and women. This man tweets insults or states explicitly that I
could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue shoot somebody and I wouldn t lose voters. (Trump) Really?

The female population makes up almost 43% of the voting population in America. Insulting one
woman may as well be insulting all women, especially when Trump stated that a woman was
disgusting because she was pumping milk. The insults go on and on whether it be toward a race,
religion, or sex. The thought that a man has called women dogs, slobs, and fat pigs is outlandish and
horrid. Someone wanting to become president should refrain from insulting anyone. Women are not
some bystanders without a voice anymore; we do have an opinion, we do have a voice and being
called a dog or slobs is an issue for all women everywhere. On April 16, 2015 Donald Trump tweeted
If Hillary Clinton can not satisfy her husband what makes you think she can satisfy America? This
tweet was in reference to Mr. Clinton s Monica Lewinsky affair, but to try and insult a highly regarded
and respected Secretary of State is appalling. Regarding Megyn Kelly, another victim of Mr. Trump s
insults, Trump clearly stated that You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes. Blood coming
out of her wherever. This statement is not only sexist towards a respected news anchor but rude and

Moralism In Dorian Gray
A Deal With the Devil The idea of selling your soul comes from the German story, Faust. In the
legend, moral integrity is taken in exchange for an object of desire. Dr. Faustus sells his soul for
twenty four years of good luck, however, is haunted by his fear of hell. Similar to the legend, Dorian
Gray sells his soul for eternal beauty. His desire to repent and rid of the painting, from which his soul
is trapped in, until he is consumed by the temptation. The painting decays to the point of no return,
while Dorian s true character became more obscured, day by day. Dorian is a Faustian character due to
his selling of his soul, the impossibility of his redemption, and his inevitable demise. Lord Henry was
a crucial point in the corruption of Dorian; however, was he the Devil? The only way to get rid of a
temptation is to yield to it. Resist it, and your soul grows sick with longing for the things it has
forbidden to itself, with desire for what its monstrous laws have made monstrous and unlawful (Wilde
13). This begins the shaping of Dorian s character, as Lord henry continues to feed Dorian information
even giving him literature to read. Throughout the beginnings of Dorian slipping away from his moral
integrity, Dorian is increasingly growing obsessed with the ideas of Lord Henry. The relationship
between Lord Henry and Dorian almost parallels the relationship between Basil and Dorian. Basil s
fascination with Dorian s beauty is mirrored by Dorian s desire to discover the

Romeo And Juliet Tybalt Conflict
Forever drawing their words, the Capulets and Montagues reveal no temptation to halt the ancient
feud between them. As the son of the Montague, Romeo, reveals his presence in a Capulet party,
Tybalt flares with rage, declaring to Lord Capulet, That men there s a Montague, our foe. A villain
who has come here in spite to mock at our celebration tonight. (I.v.62 64). Tybalt conveys his irritation
towards Lord Capulet, exhibiting his passion and devotion towards the conflict among the two
families. Although the reason for Tybalt s frustration reaches Capulet, Capulet mentions how the
Montagues can stay as long as they remain civil. Thus, originating a question in the reader s mind as

However, the inquiry at hand does not emphasize the hatred among the two houses, but instead,
questions their reasoning for such an ongoing rivalry. Friar Lawrence additionally states, For this
alliance may happily prove to end your families feud, their hate remove. (II.iii.96 97). Not only does
the conflict between the households portray no viable reason, but it troubles those involved, such as
the Montague, Friar Lawrence. Lord Capulet and Lord Montague may contain mindsets strictly based
off the feud between them. Nevertheless, as elders, they display unawareness of the troubles the
rivalry has brought to their peers as well as the disturbance it precipitates for thoughts of impartiality
from youths. Moreover, the audience can infer how if these characters consider the thoughtless
purpose of the conflict, problems would not have surfaced when Friar Lawrence marries Romeo and
Juliet, where his only motive composes of the elimination of the Capulet Montague strife. Through the
inclusion of an unknown purpose for the obstinate feud, William Shakespeare depicts a probable
reason for the troubles and possible despair of various

enough to say anything (Harmer, 2015, p.94). Students in the video have a little elementary
knowledge about English, such as the meaning of different countries, the easiest sentence structure or

Harmer (2015) said that By shifting it around in a phrase or a sentence, we can also change emphasis
or meaning . The same word with different stress might be another word, even might had different
meaning. If students cannot pronounced the words correctly, there would be misunderstanding of the
word. That is why stress is an important point. The aim of the tense was to establish the use of the
Present Perfect with ever to talk about experiences (Gerngross,2006,p117). Tense determined the time
and date of the accidents, in this video we do not know the exact time. As a result, we could just tell
from the present perfect tense. Discussion The whole process of this method was controlled by the

work or group work and so on. The last part is the production. After acquiring the main information,
students began to create new sentences. So according to the video, the high degree teacher controlled

It was then that police were called to the home and evidence started to be collected. Due to Mr. and
Mrs. Simpson s previous police record of domestic violence calls, we were in desperate need to talk to
Mr. Simpson. We called Mr. Simpson shortly after he arrived at his hotel in Chicago. When we
informed him of the murder of his wife, Simpson acted surprisingly calm and collected. He never
asked how, where, or if there are any suspects. During his interrogation, when we asked about a cut on
his hand, he claimed the cut was from golfing and that he reopened it when he smashed some glass in
his hotel room (Linder). He boarded the first plane back to Los Angeles, that s when he found us at his
home conducting a full scale investigation. After we obtained enough evidence, we released a warrant
for the arrest of Orenthal James Simpson. After searching the homes of O.J. Simpson and Nicole
Simpson we came up with much evidence to use in prosecuting O.J. Simpson. First off, the previous
history of violence in the Simpson home was considered evidence. On October 25th, 1993, Nicole
called 9 1 1 asking for someone to be sent to her home, because O.J. had broken in and was violently
yelling at her and banging on her bedroom door. But this was not the first case of domestic violence in
their home. On January 1st, 1989, police were called to Simpson s Rockingham address where Nicole
was claiming that O.J. was saying to Nicole

Physics Of Crumple Zones
Crumple zones are structural areas in the front, sometimes rear of a vehicle that are designed to absorb
energy upon impact in a predictable way.
When a car crash occurs, the goal is for the structure to crush in a relatively gradual, predictable way
that absorbs much of the impact energy, keeping it away from the occupants in what is termed a
controlled crush.
Physics of car crumple zones
Newton s first law indicates that an object in motion will remain in motion with the same speed along
with the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. As a result, if a vehicle is going
70mph, the bodies inside are as well. If the vehicle collides with a solid wall and stops immediately,

The car s front structure is divided into zones, each of them with the specific role during the
deformation process. The different properties have been achieved by using different grades of steel
making the outer zones softer than the inner zones, also ensuring that the collision forces are absorbed
and controlled in an efficient manner in order to minimise intrusion into the passenger compartment.
The engine also contributes to effective defamation due to its space saving transverse installation and
that all main components in the engine bay have their own predetermined positions even after a frontal
collision in order to help reduce component intrusion into the cabin and provide the occupants with

Safety Management System Essay
Safety Management Systems (SMS) have been presented as the future state of commercial aviation.
The objective of this capstone is to have a better understanding of the SMS role in aviation. At United
Airlines for example, SMS Corrective Action is used as a reporting tool during the performance of the
safety risk management. SMS is characterized by four key elements also known as the four pillars
(icao.int). They are, safety risk management, safety policy, safety assurance and safety promotion.
Those pillars are the foundation of SMS, therefore, regroup all the main factors that affect the
commercial and general aviation industry safety. Safety Management System (SMS), according to the
International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is a systematic approach to managing safety, such as
organizational structures, accountabilities, policies, and procedures (icao.int). Unfortunately, couple
years ago, as the aviation industry was getting more and more attention from people, airline owners
did not pay attention to safety, it was the race for profit not safety. Customer well being came before
employee s satisfaction or health. Consequently, there were more employees injured while working
due to the lack of safety; aircraft accidents occurred more frequently and caused the death of hundreds
of people, and the loss of equipment. To resolve these problems, airlines and aviation professionals
around the world, with the help of the ICAO felt the need to improve safety and maintenance

Patrick Gillespie s Let Poetry Die
Patrick Gillespie, in his article Let Poetry Die, argues that poetry is dying, and we should let it. He
explains that the public lost interest in poetry because modern poets refused to accept their criticism.
This caused the quality of poetry to decrease. Gillespie believes that the solution to this problem is to
[l]et [p]oetry [d]ie [s]o that it can be reborn (Gillespie 4). Gillespie s first claim in his article is that
poetry is being forgotten by the public.
He claims that as far as the public is concerned, poetry died with the modernists, for only a few
passing pedestrians could name a poet from the last 50 to 60 years (Gillespie 1). He then states that if
you [a]sk anyone to name a novelist of the last half century, ... names will come tumbling, but if you
[a]sk anyone to name a contemporary poet, ... you will be lucky to scrape by with John Ashbery
(Gillespie 1). Even though John Ashbery is considered one of the greatest poets of the 20th century, he
is unknown to most people. Gillespie believes that the public is forgetting poetry. ... Show more

He states that the Poetry Foundation was headed toward irrelevance, at best, and oblivion at worst, but
a large donation by Ruth Lilly helped the foundation and is the only reason it is what it is today
(Gillespie 2). Because Gillespie believes that poetry is being ignored by the public, he thinks that the
Poetry Foundation should not have been saved by Lilly s donation. He then continues to criticize Lilly
s contribution, claiming that it thwarted [t]he survival of the fittest, for the Poetry Foundation is
surviving and flourishing because of Lilly s wealth, not because of any intrinsic or hard earned merit
(Gillespie 2). Gillespie believes that the Poetry Foundation does not deserve to survive, for it exists
because of Lilly s donation, not because the public wants it to

The Effects Of E Cigarettes On The United States
E cigarettes have exploded onto the scene in the past three years. Whole stores dedicated to these
devices have opened their doors to the public and business is thriving. E cigarettes are battery charged
devices that have an atomizer, or heating element, in them to vaporize liquid nicotine. The user is able
to inhale this vapor and get the nicotine without the other 4,000 chemicals present in tobacco cigarette
smoke (Schroeder). Nicotine is a chemical that is produced by the tobacco plant. People have
discovered that by smoking the leaves of a tobacco plant the nicotine in the leaves is delivered into the
bloodstream. Nicotine by itself is not an awful drug as far as drugs go, although it is highly addictive,
it is the tar in cigarettes that does so much damage. Tobacco use remains the number one preventable
cause of death in the U.S. with 480,000 Americans dying prematurely from tobacco related disease.
Kicking this habit remains difficult for most (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services). Mark
Twain once wrote It s easy to quit smoking, I ve done it hundreds of times.
There have not been any new medications for help with smoking cessation within the last ten to
twelve years and e cig activists ask, why not e cigarettes? These advocates believe e cigarettes can be
incorporated into a smoking plan that works and will save thousands of lives (The Consumer
Advocates for Smoke free Alternatives Association). E cigarette companies maintain that their goal is

Comparing Microsoft DOS with UNIX Essay
Comparing Microsoft DOS with UNIX As is suggestive of its name, an operating system (OS) is a
collection of programs that operate the personal computer (PC). Its primary purpose is to support
programs that actually do the work one is interested in, and to allow competing programs to share the
resources of the computer. However, the OS also controls the inner workings of the computer, acting
as a traffic manager which controls the flow of data through the system and initiates the starting and
stopping processes, and as a means through which software can access the hardware and system
software. In addition, it provides routines for device control, provides for the management, scheduling
and interaction of tasks, and maintains system ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This presents the need for memory management, as the memory of the computer would need to be
searched for a free area in which to load a users program. When the user was finished running the
program, the memory consumed by it would need to be freed up and made available for another user
when required (CIT). Process scheduling and management is also necessary, so that all programs can
be executed and run without conflict. Some programs might need to be executed more frequently than
others, for example, printing. Conversely, some programs may need to be temporarily halted, then
restarted again, so this introduces the need for inter program communication. In modern operating
systems, we speak more of a process (a portion of a program in some stage of execution (CIT, 3)) than
a program. This is because only a portion of the program is loaded at any one time. The rest of the
program sits waiting on the disk until it is needed, thereby saving memory space. UNIX users speak of
the operating system as having three main parts: the kernel, the shell and the file system. While DOS
users tend not to use the term kernel and only sometimes use the term shell, the terms remain relevant.
The kernel, also known as the Real Time Executive , is the low level core of the OS and is loaded into
memory right after the loading of the BIOS whenever the system is started. The kernel handles the
transfer of data among the various parts of the system, such as from hard disk to

The Four Noble Truth Vs. The Eightfold Path
The Four Noble Truths are Buddha s reflections about life and they define what is suffering (dukkha)
and how to overcome suffering. The first noble truth is that no living being can escape suffering
(Eastern Traditions, p.200). This suffering can be emotional or physical. Buddha wants to emphasize
that life does not always meet our expectations and this will lead to suffering. People will still be
suffering even if there is not an external source, like a disease, because they will feel unfulfilled. The
second Noble Truth addresses that suffering comes from a person s desires (Eastern Traditions, p.200).
People may be able to satisfy their desires but this is only temporary solution to suffering. The third
Noble truth is that person can end their suffering if they cease their desires (Eastern Traditions, p.200).
The possibility of liberation can happen if the person extinguishes his or her desires instead of
temporarily satisfying them. The fourth Noble Truth explains that following the Eightfold path is the
way to put an end to suffering (Eastern Traditions, p.200). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These stages do not have to be followed in order. The first stage is to have right understanding, which
means that person should understand and accept the Four Noble truths (Dhammapada, p.73). The
second stage is to have the right thought which is free of sensuous desire and cruelty. These are

Crime Statistics In The 19th Century
In England and Wales, the police record serious offences of which they are aware, but this does not
represent all crimes that are committed in the country. No set if statistics is ever entirely accurate and
recent changes to the collection and publication of crime statistics indicate that politicians are aware
that (Maguire 2007). The first country to gather national statistics on crime was France. In 1826 this
begun with the first published analysis of those statistic being presented by Adolphe Quetelet in 1842.
Crime recorded by the policed has been issued in England and Wales since 1876.
There are two core approaches which are used to try and measure the level of criminal activity.
Number one there is the information that is collected by criminal justice agencies, and this data
contains crimes that are reported by the public or offences that come to the attention of the authorities
in other ways. Method number two includes gathering evidence from sample populations about their
experience of the assault, often known as victim surveys. The police collect records of the ... Show

that victims considered the issue to be a private matter and wished to deal with it themselves. Crimes

Cesar Freire s Pedagogy Of The Oppressed
Paulo Freire s Pedagogy of the Oppressed presents two distinct educational methods and asserts that
problem posing education, rather than the banking method, is what is necessary for humanity. This
particular excerpt of Pedagogy of the Oppressed encapsulates a vast scope of education. It begins with
an exposition, revealing what exactly banking method is, followed by the explanation of problem
posing education. Throughout the duration of the chapter, Freire passionately presents his ideals about
education through the scopes of these two educational styles. Pedagogy of the Oppressed starts off
with an explanation that the focus of his analysis is the relationship between teachers and students.
First, Freire believes that the majority of teachers today talk about reality as if it were motionless,
static, compartmentalized, and predictable (Paolo Freire). He uses lucidly negative diction like hollow
and alienating to describe the words these teachers speak, emphasizing that this clearly isn t enough
when it comes to educating students Freire goes on to call this particular type of educating narrative
education (Freire). Narrative education is where teachers act as the omnipotent being. Students are
merely taught everything as if it were objectively the same as any other fact, and not taught the
significance. Teachers do not learn anything from the students, either. Narrative education is a one
way street. An aspect of narrative education is the polarizing idea of

Bartleby, the Hero in Herman Melville’s Short Story...
Bartleby, The Hero in Herman Melville s short Story Bartleby the Scrivener In Herman Melville s
short story Bartleby the Scrivener, Bartleby is the hero. The reasons as to why Bartleby is considered
the hero of the story are that first, the character refuses to write in his job in the law office. He even
starves himself to death by refusing to eat, but in the end, the spirit of Bartleby still remains alive and
haunts the narrator. Throughout his life, the narrator remains haunted by the spiritual pride and
continues to struggle with the principles of morality and justice. Bartleby is also a hero because he not

This aspect of Bartleby s heroism affects the story by developing a new theme to the story and
developing the character of the narrator who is part of the story as the boss to Bartleby. It develops the
theme of association between chronometrical time and the world of the spirits. It also changes the
character of the narrator because he develops a new attitude towards time, and the world of spirits,
which changes his normal way of belief. The narrator of the story becomes shocked when he discovers
that Bartleby, who only feeds on ginger nuts, has never left the office. This is actually the first time
that the narrator experiences the spiritual power that Bartleby possesses. The narrator is so much
business oriented that he only looks at the world in terms of profits. However, when he encounters this
aspect of the spirit of Bartleby, his attitude towards life changes. He begins appreciating the fact that
Bartleby deserves better treatment, not in the capitalist way. The narrator even sees what is a right, just
as an asset, but this perception is later changed by Bartleby s spirit: What earthly right have you to
stay here? Do you pay any rent? Do you pay my taxes? Or is this property yours? (Melville, 41). The
perception of the narrator, of everything including rights of Bartleby as assets prevents the narrator
from understanding the spiritual aspect of the pride in Bartleby. Although the narrator

The Role of the Narrator in Poe s Ligeia
A widower who has suffered the loss of his beautiful, beloved, and entirely idealized wife, Ligeia,
narrates Edgar Allen Poe s short story of the same name. Soon after Ligeia s death, the narrator enters
into an unfulfilling marriage with the Lady Rowena. The narrative concludes with Rowena s death and
what vaguely appears to be the resurrection of Ligeia. Poe s short story may typically be read as a
ghost story , in which the dead Ligeia s will to live overcomes death with its sheer power; however,
the narrator, throughout the story, demonstrates that he is almost entirely unable to tell reality from
fantasy, and functions primarily in the schizoid position (Schueller 601) as evidenced by his use of
many a psychological defense mechanism hallucinates that Ligeia kills Rowena then returns from the
dead. In this interpretation, the narrator s own will for Ligeia s life is expressed through his fantasy,
which is enhanced by his heavy use of opium. Using this interpretation, it can not be the will of Ligeia
that brings her back to life, but rather the narrator s own extreme mental illness. Although the story
Ligeia appears at first glance to be about the power of the eponymous character s will to live, the story
s primary focus actually lies in the narrator, and through his psychological breakdown the true heart of
the story is born. A reasonable assumption is that the

The Lexus And The Olive Tree By Thomas L. Friedman
The world we live in today has witnessed a variety of changes, improvements and important events
overtime. Yet, the most significant incident for many and especially for business related people is
Globalisation. It is a term that is used to describe the exchange of knowledge, services, trade,
information, cultures and capital between people, governments and organisations of different societies.
According to The Economist (2013), economic historians opinions tend to differ when it comes to the
history of Globalisation or when did it start. However, they all agree that it is a process that has been
going on for a long period of time. People have been trading and exchanging goods and knowledge in
lands at great distances for ages. It is a consequence of the movement of people from a continent to
another. Historians also believe that it is related to the base of trade and world commerce that was
built and established centuries ago. Nonetheless, globalisation gained the attention of developed and
under developing countries at the end of the 20th century. It was by the cease of the cold war and the
innovation of the Internet as Thomas L. Friedman has mentioned in one of his books on Globalisation
called The Lexus and the Olive Tree. The technological advancement that we are observing nowadays
has made the world a smaller place. It has brought cultures and people closer together since
connecting with individuals from all over the globe is much simpler compared to the past.

Negatives Of British Imperialism
Throughout the age of discovery and exploration Britain established colonies and took control over
India, Britain took control in the 17th century and extended their power over India into the 20th
century where it ended[6]. British presence in India lasted centuries and took its toll on India.
Although many positive outcomes came from British imperialism in India, the negative outcomes
outweighed these. The negative effects had a greater impact on the lives of Indian people of all classes
than any of the advantages. The disregard for the wellbeing of India and the exploitation of its people

The British government had taken their jobs, ignored their needs and on top of that raised their
taxation and made it cash exchange which was far harder for the Indians to pay. Now the Indians were

India was soon corrupted with an abundance of famines such as the Agra famine of 1837 leaving 800

up to 10 million people[3] The Indian soldiers working for the British or Sepoys as they were called
were also treated with the same level of disregard which led to them having to act against their
religion one of these cases was having to bite the cartridges of their guns greased with either cow or
pig fat, the former being sacred to Hindus and the latter being seen as unclean by the Muslims. This
offense was even seen by some as a ploy to turn the Indians Christian. To the Sepoys the blatant
disinterest and offensive treatment towards their culture was enough to ignite a mutiny which has been
in the running for years and so the Sepoy mutiny rose, in an attempt to reclaim their rights and stop the
westernization of their country the Indians revolted. The Sepoy mutiny lasted just over a year and did
not help the Indian campaign, in fact the merciless slaughtering of British soldiers and Indian peoples

Essay on The Influential Life of Christopher Marlowe
During the Renaissance era, Christopher Marlowe impacted and inspired many of his fellow
playwrights during his short life. With the success of his plays and poems, some including
Tamburlaine the Great and Hero and Leander, came the praise for Marlowe s contemporaries.
According to Peter Farey, there were notably few contemporary dramatists whom had anything
negative to say about Marlowe, although he received much criticism regarding his personal life. His
relatively clean reputation diminished after his first arrest in 1593 and rumors of suspected corruption.
It is believed by a copious amount of scholars that Marlowe was a considerably controversial

However, he was fortunate enough to be selected at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge on another
scholarship from a former Archbishop of Canterbury named Matthew Parker. The dramatist left
Canterbury for university near the end of 1580 and received his B.A. degree in 1584 and later his
M.A. several years later. Throughout his relatively short lifespan, Christopher Marlowe flourished
remarkably as an artist because of the fruition of his plays and poems. The dramatist s first play,
Tamburlaine the Great, was performed on a classic stage in 1587 in London. This play was the first
English play to be written in blank verse and has been deliberated to be the beginning of the more
mature phase of the Elizabethan theatre. The dramatist also wrote in iambic pentameter, which became
very popular before the end of this age (Escoala). Marlowe wrote a total of seven plays and two
poems, including Tamburlaine the Great (parts one and two), Doctor Faustus, The Massacre at Paris,
and Hero and Leander. The immense success of Marlowe s plays is partly because of the stage
presence of actor Edward Alleyn. The role of Tamburlaine in Tamburlaine the Great was most likely
written for him, for Alleyn was awfully tall for the time period and the character of Tamburlaine is
described to be rather haughty. Above all, Marlowe was admired for his contemporaries during the
Renaissance era, with George Peele remembering him as

This, which has been somewhat of a cult classic starting as far back as the 1800s, with Jane Austen s

seemed the world. Those of not getting a boy, or getting someone else s boy were the most troubling
to Ms. Churchill, as she is known to her help. Typical of any story such as this, she had an accomplice
in her daily shenanigans, Harriet Smith. Her slightly naive best friend was there to help her through all

that is why she never learned that there are bigger things in life than boys and primping. Despite this,
she was never interested in the idea of marrying for herself, but setting her friends up with their

commitment to quality and customer service, increase its focus on the utilities industry, expand
capacity, and improve its cost position in order to match with the competitive environment. Moreover,
FPL needed to renew focus on its core business. It planed to sell several of the non utility businesses.
Furthermore, Broadhead commenced an aggressive capital expenditure program designed to meet
projected demand into the next decade. FPL budgeted $6.6 billion, spread over five years, for the
expansion.
The company also felt that it would be prudent to reduce debt, and that part of the cash savings from
the dividend cut would be used for this purpose. At the same time, the company announced plans to
return part of the cash saved by the dividend cut by repurchasing up to 10 million shares of stock over
the next three years. FPL explained that this would reduce shareholders taxes.
We can say that the dividend changes have been so much less volatile than earnings changes because:
1) management believed that shareholders prefer a steady progression in dividends 2) managers are
reluctant to make dividend changes that might have to be reversed. They are particularly worried
about a dividend increase, which would affect the stock price. Broadhead needed money to invest in
FPL; therefore, he needed to make the stock price increase in order to

his inner change by altering his appearances, as we observe for the first time in the novel the touch of

A more convincing evidence of the portrait being a reflection of Dorian s moral decadence lies
moments before the death of Dorian. At the night of his death, Dorian attempted to convince himself

Evaluation Of A Training On Embedded Instruction
Recruited teachers will be randomly assigned to one of three conditions. Participants in the first
condition will receive continued coaching on embedded instruction. Teachers in this condition will
receive training by their coach for one hour per week, be observed by their coach one hour per week,
and will receive feedback through email or phone call. Teachers in the second condition will attend
two six hour long workshops on embedded instruction and will not have continued contact with an
embedded instruction coach. Finally, teachers in the third condition will not receive training on
embedded instruction and will serve as a control group. Data will be collected from these teachers at
four time points. (T1) Data will be collected for the first time point four weeks after school begins to
provide teachers with time to become familiar with their students behaviors so that they can identify
target children with challenging behaviors. T1 will serve as a baseline measure, as no teachers will
have received embedded instruction coaching or training. (T2) Next, data will be collected before
students leave for winter break, preferably two weeks before break begins to avoid data collection too

approximately two to three weeks after students return from holiday break. (T4) Finally, data will be
collected at the end of the school year about two weeks before school ends. The

  • 2. The European Impact on Native American Technology Essay The European Impact on Native American Technology When European exploration led to the populating of the Americas, it was described as the event with one of the greatest ecological impacts in history. The force behind this impact was the mass movement of people and their behavior s toward their New World . It only stands to reason that a clash would occur with the natives of these lands. One of the areas with the greatest conflict was the field of technology. Scientifically, when the cultures of 15th century Europe and the natives in the Americas are concerned, the two are fairly alike. In Europe,a great deal of work was done in astronomy. Of course this was because it was a necessity for navigation. From the studies of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Consequently, there was no real understanding of the human body and how it functioned. At this period in time, such remedies as using leeches for blood lettings were common practice in Europe(McGovern, 75). This is one area which contrasts greatly with the native cultures. The Indians of the Americas were far ahead of the Europeans of their time. Because of the closeness and respect for nature, many natural cures were used. The Aztecs had even gone as far as surgery to remove organs and even work on the brain. The Indians also took much better care of themselves pysically. This was done by a better diet and exercise. In some cultures a type of martial arts was taught beginning in adolesence, to keep in shape both mentally and pysically. Despite all of these advancements, they were powerless to the new and unfamilliar European diseases. Another area in which the Indians thrived was that of agriculture and their understanding of the earth. Europeans had little knowledge of agriculture, or chose not to use what they did have. Europe was in a state of agricultural depression. Most of the soil was completely exhausted due to overuse and general mistreatment of the land. Both activities which continued in America. Agriculture served as the material foundation for the natives. Corn was the heart of this foundation because it was so versatile. In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Personality theory Extraversion is one of the five core personality traits described in the big five theory of personality. This trait is characterized by sociability, assertiveness, emotional expressiveness and excitability. People who are high in this trait are often described as being outgoing ad talkative, while those low in this trait are described as quiet and reserved. An extroverted disposition ; concern with what is outside the self rather what is inside. Introversion is one of the major personality traits identified in many theories of personality. People who are introverted tend to be inward turning, or focused more on internal thoughts, feelings and moods rather than seeking out external stimulation. Introversion is genereally viewed as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Individuals who score low on neuroticism partially those who are also high on extraversion generally report more happiness and satisfaction with their lives. When it comes to neuroticism, Felicia to me seems to be in the middle of it. I wouldn t say she scores a high level because her case study doesn t show signs of anxiety, moodiness, worry, envy or jealousy. Although Felicia doesn t show none of those signs she is very self conscious and she also seems to be shy. The reason I say Felicia is shy is because in the case study it states that she sees waitressing as a means of practicing acting and she will often try out different roles and characters while working. The typical roles she will play at work are loud, very gregarious, and at times flamboyant which is the opposite of her personality, as most of her friends would describe her as shy and reserved. During auditions Felicia is noted to also be very out going and full of energy. She can easily project a full range of emotions. This statement shows me that Felicia has traits of a high neuroticism level but not enough to say she is on that level plus there are things that are present in a low neuroticism level like being calm and in her case study it says she will go along with things with no complaining and shows no sign of being depressed, she seems happy with things besides ... • 4. The Most Brutal Dictators Of Jeff Stalin I agree with this quote the most even though it was said by one of the most brutal dictators in the world, Josef Stalin. Education is an extremely powerful object that you need to use carefully. In other words supply the student with the correct and fact based answer rather than an answer that you think is correct. In America a good education is the difference between working at Walmart, and being a computer programer at Google. A good education is one that has these qualities, it is enticing to the student, it prepares the student for the world to come, and provides the student with facts that they can make their own opinions on. Enticing is key to keep the student focus on school rather than other things. If an education is not enticing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. My Guest Star Featured Is Sara Picklesimer Recently this week, we ve been discussing perception and how it impacts the way we communicate in our daily lives. Interestingly enough, this episode of COMMPENDIUM hosted by Professor Stephen Stifano focused on this subject and its attributes. Our guest star featured is Sara Picklesimer, a University of Louisville graduate and now currently a doctoral student at the University of Connecticut in the field of communication. She was born in Pinesville, Kentucky, and started off as a biology major before realizing her passion was communication after taking her first public speaking course. Despite being a shy and reserved individual, Ms. Picklesimer found that she actually enjoyed and was surprisingly good at this field. She now teaches a gender and communication course here at the University of Connecticut, which ties in gender through music and a variety of other aspects in relation to communication. She gives us her expert lecture on two primary topics related to perception: thin slicing and the impact and effect of gender on the ways in which we communicate. Professor Stifano mentioned some of the foundations of perception that we have discussed in our lecture, including selective attention and perceptual filters. The other aspects revealed in this podcast are thin slicing and gender. All of these elements tie into each other in terms of communicating effectively and making decisions, and what make up perception. We learned that perception is selecting, organizing, and ... • 7. The Last Winter Film Analysis ABSTRACT Environmental change is a severe issue in the world as many parts of the world strive towards ensuring that the environment remains habitable and with minimal detrimental changes (Hamilton, 2011). Furthermore, environmental evolution is taught in most educational centers to ensure that people understand how to conserve the environment. However, many people perceive it as a dull subject and do not give it the attention it deserves; but this situation is changed by the number of movies, documentaries, movies and TV series that have been made to explain the dangers or benefits of environmental change more creatively. This study will seek to describe one such movie and discuss the different factors, assumptions, impacts, and scientific accuracies to the same regard. It will also put into consideration the truths, consequences, and facts that have been portrayed in the movie. The Last Winter, whose release was in 2007, is a movie that explains environmental changes based on global warming. Its effects and shall discuss it and try to understand the angle that the producer took in conveying the ecological change message as well as point out whether it provides a solution for the problem so discovered. Leonard Koscianski finished designing this work in 1991, but the process of construction lasted almost a decade. The cost of the building ended up exceeding the original figures, which slowed construction. With donations from private sources, including the Disney family and The Walt Disney Company, The Walt Disney Concert Hall finally opened on October 24, 2003. The cost of the concert hall was roughly 274 million dollars, and seats 2,265 people. The concert hall is located in downtown Los Angeles, California. It was the fourth hall to join the Los Angeles Music Center. The concert hall is in no way normal but that is what Frank Gehry is known for. Gehry s architectural works fall under the deconsructivism category. Deconstructivism encourages radical freedom of form and the open manifestation of complexity in a building rather than strict attention to functional concerns and conventional design elements When looking at The Walt Disney Concert Hall from the outside you see a series of corrugated stainless steel panels covering irregularly shaped appendages. All of the appendages are interconnected and have glass between some of them to soften the look of all of the steel panels. The concert hall definitely stands out against the other buildings that surround it. The concert hall is in the heart of the city with all of the concrete buildings surrounding it. • 10. Moralism In Dorian Gray A Deal With the Devil The idea of selling your soul comes from the German story, Faust. In the legend, moral integrity is taken in exchange for an object of desire. Dr. Faustus sells his soul for twenty four years of good luck, however, is haunted by his fear of hell. Similar to the legend, Dorian Gray sells his soul for eternal beauty. His desire to repent and rid of the painting, from which his soul is trapped in, until he is consumed by the temptation. The painting decays to the point of no return, while Dorian s true character became more obscured, day by day. Dorian is a Faustian character due to his selling of his soul, the impossibility of his redemption, and his inevitable demise. Lord Henry was a crucial point in the corruption of Dorian; however, was he the Devil? The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it. Resist it, and your soul grows sick with longing for the things it has forbidden to itself, with desire for what its monstrous laws have made monstrous and unlawful (Wilde 13). This begins the shaping of Dorian s character, as Lord henry continues to feed Dorian information even giving him literature to read. Throughout the beginnings of Dorian slipping away from his moral integrity, Dorian is increasingly growing obsessed with the ideas of Lord Henry. Its primary purpose is to support programs that actually do the work one is interested in, and to allow competing programs to share the resources of the computer. However, the OS also controls the inner workings of the computer, acting as a traffic manager which controls the flow of data through the system and initiates the starting and stopping processes, and as a means through which software can access the hardware and system software. This presents the need for memory management, as the memory of the computer would need to be searched for a free area in which to load a users program. When the user was finished running the program, the memory consumed by it would need to be freed up and made available for another user when required (CIT). Process scheduling and management is also necessary, so that all programs can be executed and run without conflict. Some programs might need to be executed more frequently than others, for example, printing. Conversely, some programs may need to be temporarily halted, then restarted again, so this introduces the need for inter program communication. In modern operating systems, we speak more of a process (a portion of a program in some stage of execution (CIT, 3)) than a program. This is because only a portion of the program is loaded at any one time. The rest of the program sits waiting on the disk until it is needed, thereby saving memory space. UNIX users speak of the operating system as having three main parts: the kernel, the shell and the file system. While DOS users tend not to use the term kernel and only sometimes use the term shell, the terms remain relevant. The kernel, also known as the Real Time Executive , is the low level core of the OS and is loaded into memory right after the loading of the BIOS whenever the system is started. The kernel handles the transfer of data among the various parts of the system, such as from hard disk to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The first noble truth is that no living being can escape suffering (Eastern Traditions, p.200). This suffering can be emotional or physical. Buddha wants to emphasize that life does not always meet our expectations and this will lead to suffering. People will still be suffering even if there is not an external source, like a disease, because they will feel unfulfilled. The second Noble Truth addresses that suffering comes from a person s desires (Eastern Traditions, p.200). People may be able to satisfy their desires but this is only temporary solution to suffering. The third Noble truth is that person can end their suffering if they cease their desires (Eastern Traditions, p.200). It begins with an exposition, revealing what exactly banking method is, followed by the explanation of problem posing education. Throughout the duration of the chapter, Freire passionately presents his ideals about education through the scopes of these two educational styles. Pedagogy of the Oppressed starts off with an explanation that the focus of his analysis is the relationship between teachers and students. Charles Jenkin Prof. Vogtman ENG 205 11 December 2016 The Role of the Narrator in Poe s Ligeia A widower who has suffered the loss of his beautiful, beloved, and entirely idealized wife, Ligeia, narrates Edgar Allen Poe s short story of the same name. Soon after Ligeia s death, the narrator enters into an unfulfilling marriage with the Lady Rowena. The narrative concludes with Rowena s death and what vaguely appears to be the resurrection of Ligeia. Poe s short story may typically be read as a ghost story , in which the dead Ligeia s will to live overcomes death with its sheer power; however, the narrator, throughout the story, demonstrates that he is almost entirely unable to tell reality from fantasy, and functions primarily in the schizoid position (Schueller 601) as evidenced by his use of many a psychological defense mechanism hallucinates that Ligeia kills Rowena then returns from the dead. In this interpretation, the narrator s own will for Ligeia s life is expressed through his fantasy, which is enhanced by his heavy use of opium. Using this interpretation, it can not be the will of Ligeia that brings her back to life, but rather the narrator s own extreme mental illness. Although the story Ligeia appears at first glance to be about the power of the eponymous character s will to live, the story s primary focus actually lies in the narrator, and through his psychological breakdown the true heart of the story is born. A reasonable assumption is that the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Yet, the most significant incident for many and especially for business related people is Globalisation. It is a term that is used to describe the exchange of knowledge, services, trade, information, cultures and capital between people, governments and organisations of different societies. According to The Economist (2013), economic historians opinions tend to differ when it comes to the history of Globalisation or when did it start. However, they all agree that it is a process that has been going on for a long period of time. People have been trading and exchanging goods and knowledge in lands at great distances for ages. It is a consequence of the movement of people from a continent to another. Historians also believe that it is related to the base of trade and world commerce that was built and established centuries ago. Nonetheless, globalisation gained the attention of developed and under developing countries at the end of the 20th century. It was by the cease of the cold war and the innovation of the Internet as Thomas L. Friedman has mentioned in one of his books on Globalisation called The Lexus and the Olive Tree. The technological advancement that we are observing nowadays has made the world a smaller place. It has brought cultures and people closer together since connecting with individuals from all over the globe is much simpler compared to the past. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Negatives Of British Imperialism Throughout the age of discovery and exploration Britain established colonies and took control over India, Britain took control in the 17th century and extended their power over India into the 20th century where it ended[6]. British presence in India lasted centuries and took its toll on India. Although many positive outcomes came from British imperialism in India, the negative outcomes outweighed these. The negative effects had a greater impact on the lives of Indian people of all classes than any of the advantages. With the lack of food India was soon corrupted with an abundance of famines such as the Agra famine of 1837 leaving 800 000 dead, the Rajputana famine of 1869 killing 1.5 million and the great Bengal famine which killed up to 10 million people[3] The Indian soldiers working for the British or Sepoys as they were called were also treated with the same level of disregard which led to them having to act against their religion one of these cases was having to bite the cartridges of their guns greased with either cow or pig fat, the former being sacred to Hindus and the latter being seen as unclean by the Muslims. This offense was even seen by some as a ploy to turn the Indians Christian. To the Sepoys the blatant disinterest and offensive treatment towards their culture was enough to ignite a mutiny which has been in the running for years and so the Sepoy mutiny rose, in an attempt to reclaim their rights and stop the westernization of their country the Indians revolted. With the success of his plays and poems, some including Tamburlaine the Great and Hero and Leander, came the praise for Marlowe s contemporaries. According to Peter Farey, there were notably few contemporary dramatists whom had anything negative to say about Marlowe, although he received much criticism regarding his personal life. The dramatist left Canterbury for university near the end of 1580 and received his B.A. degree in 1584 and later his M.A. several years later. Throughout his relatively short lifespan, Christopher Marlowe flourished remarkably as an artist because of the fruition of his plays and poems. The dramatist s first play, Tamburlaine the Great, was performed on a classic stage in 1587 in London. This play was the first English play to be written in blank verse and has been deliberated to be the beginning of the more mature phase of the Elizabethan theatre. The dramatist also wrote in iambic pentameter, which became very popular before the end of this age (Escoala). Marlowe wrote a total of seven plays and two poems, including Tamburlaine the Great (parts one and two), Doctor Faustus, The Massacre at Paris, and Hero and Leander. The immense success of Marlowe s plays is partly because of the stage presence of actor Edward Alleyn. The role of Tamburlaine in Tamburlaine the Great was most likely written for him, for Alleyn was awfully tall for the time period and the character of Tamburlaine is described to be rather haughty. This, which has been somewhat of a cult classic starting as far back as the 1800s, with Jane Austen s Emma. Emma Churchill was a twenty one year old with the most trivial problems, which, to her, seemed the world. Those of not getting a boy, or getting someone else s boy were the most troubling to Ms. Churchill, as she is known to her help. Furthermore, Broadhead commenced an aggressive capital expenditure program designed to meet projected demand into the next decade. The company also felt that it would be prudent to reduce debt, and that part of the cash savings from the dividend cut would be used for this purpose. At the same time, the company announced plans to return part of the cash saved by the dividend cut by repurchasing up to 10 million shares of stock over the next three years. FPL explained that this would reduce shareholders taxes. We can say that the dividend changes have been so much less volatile than earnings changes because: 1) management believed that shareholders prefer a steady progression in dividends 2) managers are reluctant to make dividend changes that might have to be reversed. They are particularly worried about a dividend increase, which would affect the stock price. Although Dorian s decay was hard to observe because his beauty remained intact and thus created an innocent image of him, the portrait recorded his inner change by altering his appearances, as we observe for the first time in the novel the touch of cruelty round the warped lips in the painting after the death of Sybil Vane. The painting provided Dorian a double life, as remarked in Into the Demon Universe: A Literary Exploration of Oscar Wilde: The picture of his soul was locked safely away in a dark room while the innocent face he presented to respectable society was only a mask. Indeed, the portrait became the spokesperson of Dorian s true personality by altering his appearances according to his corruption of the mind.
