BULLYING: IT HURTS
TYPES OF BULLYING
Although the media likes to portray bullying as a big
thuggish student stealing your lunch money, there are
other types of equally harmful but more discreet bullying.
• Physical- bullying someone with violence
• Verbal- bullying someone by name-calling and insults
• Relational- bullying someone by damaging their
reputation
• Cyberbullying- bullying someone through the internet
EFFECTS OF BULLYING
Immediate
• Depression
• Loss of interest in
activities
• Increased levels of
aggressive behavior
• Health problems like
headaches, stomach
aches
• Suicidal thoughts (and
even suicide)
Long Term
• Self blame
• Missing school
• Loneliness and social
anxiety
• Social withdrawal and
isolation
• Loss of self-esteem
• Anxiety
THE BYSTANDER’S ROLE
Even if you don’t participate in bullying, you can still
be part of the problem. One of the main reasons a
bully bullies others is because it makes them feel
good about themselves. By watching someone get
bullied, you are giving the bullies positive attention
and showing them that they are interesting when
they bully others.
Don’t be a bystander!
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP
You don’t have to be a bystander. There are many
ways to help stop bullying, like:
• Tell an authoritative figure, and give them all the
evidence you have of it
• If you know someone who gets bullied, let them
know that you support them no matter what
• Avoid, and encourage other to do the same,
participating in conversations that slander someone
• If, and only if, you feel comfortable doing it, rally
your peers and let the bully know that what he is
doing is not okay
