Liga Filipina, founded by Jose Rizal.
• Andres Bonifacio and prominent members of the
Katipunan were members of the La Liga Filipina.
• KKK (Kataastaasan, Kagalanggalangang, Katipunan
ng mga Anak ng Bayan) has a valuable connection to
what we call “Kartilya ng Katipunan”.
• KKK is the secret organization while, Kartilya holds the
name as the “Katipunan Code of Conduct”.
• Kartilya is a small pamphlet that is given to new members of
Katipunan.
• Kartilya originate from the word “Cartilla” which means the
paper given to a new student in learning specific subject.
• The author of Kartilya is Emilio Jacinto. It was written in 1896.
About the author
• The author of the document “Kartilya”
• Emilio Jacinto recognized as the “Brain of the
Katipunan” was born on December 15, 1875 in Trozo,
Manila.
• His parents were Mariano Jacinto and Josefina Dizon.
• In his young age, his father died, leaving him the sole
responsibility to finance his education. Due to poverty, he
was forced to live with his uncle, Jose Dizon.
• He studied in San Juan De Letran and later moved to
University of Sto. Tomas taking the course of Bachelor of
Law.
• During the outbreak of Philippine Revolution in 1896, he joined the
Katipunan, a revolutionary movement founded by Andres Bonifacio to
overthrow the Spanish government.
• Being close to Andres Bonifacio, he acted as general and adviser. His
role in the movement was very significant, he wrote the “Kartilya ng
Katipunan”, a set of rules to be followed by Katipunan members.
• He also served as the editor of “Kalayaan”, the official newspaper of
the Katipunan.
• Emilio Jacinto dropped out of college at the age of 20.
• He was also known by the group as Pingkian.
• He died on April 16, 1899, due of malaria in Majayjay, Laguna.
BACKGROUND OF THE PERIOD
The revolutionary society or Samahang Kataas-taasang,
Kagalang galangang,Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan (KKK) was
established on July 07, 1892 by the anti-Spanish Filipino at
Tondo,Manila in response to the news of Rizal’s exilement. And result
of the failure of the reform movement in Spain, in which Filipinos
attempted to demand reforms for the Philippines from the Spanish
Government.
The Katipunan was formally founded on the year 1892 by Andres
Bonifacio, Teodoro Plata, Losido Diwa, Deodato Arellano, Valentine
Diaz and others, in response to the news of Rizal’s deputation.
During that time, the aim of the Kartilya ng Katipunan is to fight for the
Philippine independence from Spain and to unite the Filipinos into one
nation.
During this period the reform movement or propaganda movement
had an impact to build a new organization which is the Katipunan.
The reforms are also have a huge impact on Filipinos, by inspiring
them throughout their works and most of them had been joined the said
Katipunan.
In 1896 there is what we called “ Duties of the sons of the Filipino”
that was written by Andres Bonifacio that strictly followed by the members
of organization. This dialogue embodied that Bonifacio’s belief. Bonifacio
would then later adopt Jacinto’s Kartilya ng Katipunan as the official
teaching of the Katipunan.
ANALYSIS OF THE IMPACT HISTORICAL INFORMATION
• Kartilya is consist of 14 moral and ethical values that directly
emphasized this valuable concepts; Freedom, Brotherhood,
Righteousness, Excellence, Enlightenment, Liberty and Equality.
• There are two major classifications of rules and values stated inside
the Kartilya. The first group contains the rules that will make the
member upright individual and the second group contains the rules
that will guide the way he traits his fellow men.
• In a deeper perception and comprehension about the content and
provisions of the Kartilya, it is served as a direct response to certain
value system that has been found noticeably unfair during their recent
times.
• The Kartilya encompasses its “Instructive traits” as member’s
development as individuals in their own rights has been validated
too.
• The Kartilya of Katipunan pertains to focus of “what Katipuneros
should do” rather than stating Do’s and Dont’s of a certain
individual.
• The analyzation of the values of the values uphold in the document
as consistent with the burgeoning rational and liberal in the
eighteen and nineteenth century.
The Katipunan Code of Conduct
1. The life that is not consecrated to a lofty and reasonable purpose is a tree
without a shade, if not a poisonous weed.
2. To do good for personal gain and not for its own sake is not virtue.
3. It is rational to be charitable and love one's fellow creature, and to adjust
one's conduct, acts and words to what is in itself reasonable.
4. Whether our skin be black or white, we are all born equal: superiority in
knowledge, wealth and beauty are to be understood, but not superiority by
nature.
5. The honorable man prefers honor to personal gain; the scoundrel, gain to
honor.
6. To the honorable man, his word is sacred.
7. Do not waste thy time: wealth can be recovered but not time lost.
8. Defend the oppressed and fight the oppressor before the law or in the
field.
9. The prudent man is sparing in words and faithful in keeping secrets
10. On the thorny path of life, man is the guide of woman and the children, and if the
guide leads to the precipice, those whom he guides will also go there.
11. Thou must not look upon woman as a mere plaything, but as a faithful companion
who will share with thee the penalties of life; her (physical) weakness will increase thy
interest in her and she will remind thee of the mother who bore thee and reared thee.
12. What thou dost not desire done unto thy wife, children, brothers and sisters, that
do not unto the wife, children, brothers and sisters of thy neighbor.
13. Man is not worth more because he is a king, because his nose is aquiline, and his
color white, not because he is a *priest, a servant of God, nor because of the high
prerogative that he enjoys upon earth, but he is worth most who is a man of proven
and real value, who does good, keeps his words, is worthy and honest; he who does
not oppress nor consent to being oppressed, he who loves and cherishes his fatherland,
though he be born in the wilderness and know no tongue but his own.
• 14.When these rules of conduct shall be known to all, the longed-for sun of liberty shall rise
brilliant over this most unhappy potion of the globe and rays shall diffuse everlasting jy among the
confederated brethren of the same rays, the lives of those who have gone before, the fatigues and
the ell-paid sufferings will remain. If he desires to enter (The Katipunan) has informed himself of
this and believes he will be able to perform what will be his duties, he may fill out the application
for admission.

are enjoying today.

themselves.
9. It teaches to have a genuine compassion for one another and that we
are all equal and true brethren even you are poor, rich and ignorant.
10. Its highlights the importance of having the right attitude towards
other people.

It is rational to be charitable and love one's fellow creature, and to adjust one's conduct, acts and words to what is in itself reasonable. 4. Whether our skin be black or white, we are all born equal: superiority in knowledge, wealth and beauty are to be understood, but not superiority by nature. 5. The honorable man prefers honor to personal gain; the scoundrel, gain to honor. 6. To the honorable man, his word is sacred. 7. Do not waste thy time: wealth can be recovered but not time lost. 8. Defend the oppressed and fight the oppressor before the law or in the field. 9. The prudent man is sparing in words and faithful in keeping secrets
  • 12. 10. On the thorny path of life, man is the guide of woman and the children, and if the guide leads to the precipice, those whom he guides will also go there. 11. Thou must not look upon woman as a mere plaything, but as a faithful companion who will share with thee the penalties of life; her (physical) weakness will increase thy interest in her and she will remind thee of the mother who bore thee and reared thee. 12. What thou dost not desire done unto thy wife, children, brothers and sisters, that do not unto the wife, children, brothers and sisters of thy neighbor. 13. Man is not worth more because he is a king, because his nose is aquiline, and his color white, not because he is a *priest, a servant of God, nor because of the high prerogative that he enjoys upon earth, but he is worth most who is a man of proven and real value, who does good, keeps his words, is worthy and honest; he who does not oppress nor consent to being oppressed, he who loves and cherishes his fatherland, though he be born in the wilderness and know no tongue but his own.
  • 13. • 14.When these rules of conduct shall be known to all, the longed-for sun of liberty shall rise brilliant over this most unhappy potion of the globe and rays shall diffuse everlasting jy among the confederated brethren of the same rays, the lives of those who have gone before, the fatigues and the ell-paid sufferings will remain.
