 Marcel was one of the first and youngest students at the Bauhaus– a
radical arts and crafts school that Walter Gropius had founded in
Weimar.
 He was recognized by Gropius as a significant talent and was quickly put
at the head of the Carpentry Shop.
 Marcel Breuer enjoyed a remarkable dual career as a furniture designer
& an Architect.
 He created the first tubular steel chair and as an architect who helped
define mid-century American modernism through projects like the
exhibition house
 He worked on many projects in New York
 Breuer was awarded the Gold Medal of the American Institute of
Architects at their 100th annual convention in 1968 at Portland, Oregon.
 After his Death his partners kept offices going in his name and with his
permission in Paris and New York for several years but, with their eventual
retirement, each is now closed.

 The Met Breuer is a museum of modern and contemporary art.
 It is part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
 The Met Breuer opened in March 2016 in the building formerly occupied
by the Whitney Museum of American Art, designed by Marcel Breuer and
completed in 1966.
 Its works come from the Met's collection and are both monographic and
thematic exhibitions.
 In 2008, the idea behind the Met Breuer project was initiated by
philanthropist Leonard Lauder.
 The location opened in March 2016 following a year and a half of
preparations as part of a US$600 million Metropolitan Museum of
Art renovation plan.
 Architects Beyer Blinder Belle updated the Met Breuer building , which
was designed by Marcel Breuer.
 In advance of the Met Breuer's opening, art critic at The New York
Times Roberta Smith wrote that the Metropolitan Museum of Art and other
major art institutions feared to miss out as the rest of the art
world displayed more contemporary art exhibitions.
 The Architect's Newspaper sees the Met's approach as one that treats
the building itself as an artwork versus a building, with a focus on the
patina of the materials as part of a holistic entity.
