A German-American
architect.
Born : 27 march 1886,
Aachen, Germany.
Along with Le
Corbusier, Walter
Gropius and Frank Llyod
Wright, he is widely
regarded as one of the
pioneers of modernist
architecture.
3. He created an influential twentieth-century
architectural style, stated with extreme clarity and
simplicity.
His mature buildings made use of modern
materials such as industrial steel and plate glass to
define interior spaces.
He called his buildings “skin and bones”
architecture.
He is often associated with his quotation of the
aphorisms, “less is more” and “ God is in the
details”.

1. Barcelona
Pavilion was the
German Pavilion
designed for the
1929
International
Exposition in
Barcelona,
Spain.

A steel, brick, and glass structure, and it is a rare
example of modern architecture in Washington,
D.C.
11. Construction
The building was completed in 1972 at a cost of
$18 million.
Maintenance was then somewhat neglected and
there were problems with the HVAC system.
On March 4, 2017, the building closed to begin a
modernization, including a major reconstruction of
the interior of the building.
12. FEATURES
The rooftop structure has rounded edges – a
deliberate contrast to the existing rectilinear
building – and is topped by a green roof, partially
covering a landscaped outdoor terrace.
The additional fifth floor with auditorium(280
seats), event space and public roof terrace.

14. A new open curving stairwell along the facade –
which is lined in bright colours – is designed to draw
people up through the building to the roof terrace.
The plan also adds a new cafe off the theatre, and
turns an existing driveway into a ground-floor
terrace.

16. The central brickwork cores on the upper floors are
removed to make room for column-free Upper
Great Halls, whilst increasing transparency and
emphasising the horizontal orientation.

18. The new void of the Great reading room between the
third and fourth adds a visual vertical connection.
19. A two-storey auditorium is inserted into the center of the
building on the fourth and fifth floors.
20. The public terrace on the roof engages with the
surrounding city through spectacular views.
