Moshe Safdie designed the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in Kansas City, Missouri. His design took advantage of the site's dramatic views by placing the two performance halls facing south with glass enclosures, opening the foyers to views of the city skyline. The enveloping structure features undulating vertical segments that form a segmented, gently curving crown. The curved roof descends towards the south, intersecting with an outwardly inclined glass wall containing the southern-facing foyer.

It is a development in POST-MODERNISM that started in late 1980s.
It views architecture in bits and pieces.
It has no visual logic.
Buildings may appear to be made of abstract forms.
The idea was to develop buildings which show how differently from traditional architectural conventions buildings can be built without loosing their utility and still complying with the fundamental laws of physics.
The ideas were borrowed from the French philosopher, Jacques Derrida.
Architects involved –
Zaha Hadid
Bernhard Tschumi
Rem Koolhaas
The term ‘Critical Regionalism’ was first coined by Alexander Tzonis and Liane Lefaivre and later more famously and pretentiously by Kenneth Frampton in “Towards a Critical Regionalism : Six points of an architecture of resistance”
According to Frampton, critical regionalism should adopt modern architecture critically for its universal progressive qualities but at the same time should value responses particular to the context. Emphasis should be on topography, climate, light, tectonic form rather than scenography and the tactile sense rather than the visual.
According to Tzonis and Lefaivre, critical regionalism need not directly draw from the context, rather elements can be stripped of their context and used in strange rather than familiar ways.
Critical regionalism is different from Regionalism which tries to achieve a one-to-one correspondence with vernacular architecture in a conscious way without consciously partaking in the universal.
It is considered a particular form of post-modern response in developing countries, not to be confused with postmodernism as architectural style.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

3. KAUFFMAN CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS
Architects - Safdie Architects
Location - 216 NW 107th St, Kansas City, MO64155,

Project Year- 2011
- MOSHE SAFDIE
The opportunity to design a major new performing arts
center was precipitated by two significant decisions: the
selection of an extraordinary site crowning the
escarpment overlooking the historic warehouse district
and the new entertainment district, affording a 180° view
of the horizon; and the decision to construct two
dedicated halls for symphony, ballet, opera, and theatre.
5. The drop in the land towards the south allowed them to include a new road that serves as the
drop-off point and leads to a large underground parking garage on top of which sits a park.
From the garage and the drop-off levels, the public ascends the grand stair to the great hall, with
public gathering areas and the individual theatres on each side. Recognizing the significance of
downtown as an additional access point, the North Entrance was aligned on the axis of
Central Street, penetrating through the building into the theatre lobbies

6. Moshe believes that the site of a project always holds the secret for
its design concept. He was compelled by the dramatic view to the
south. As the site was on a higher plateau facing the city on its south
he placed the two performance halls on the north ,which he
considered “performance areas” that should be exposed to the view
of the city. The glass enclosure opens the foyer to dramatic views of
the sky and skyline. At night, seen from the exterior, the glazing
disappears and reveals the dramatically lit theater facades and activity
within the public areas.

7. Each hall reads as a
-distinct volume
-metaphorically evoking a musical instrument
-visible through the glass shell
As the natural light changes, so does the building’s
transparency, reflecting the structure’s surroundings and,
at the same time, hinting at its interior.
At night, the entire building becomes inverted, displaying all
of its interior activities to the community outside.
The halls are served by a series of access
balconies fronting on the great hall, forming
two conical stacked rings of white plaster.
The thousands of people mingling before and
after performances and intermissions are
theatrically visible to one another. Thus, the
great hall with its surrounding balconies is a
counterpoint to the theaters within.
The theater of the public realm, where the
celebrating public are visible to the southern
sweep of the city.
8. The enveloping structure of the complex is a
-series of undulating
-vertical segments of a circle forming the northern container of
the theater's stage, concert hall, and experimental theater.
- As these elements ascend, they create a segmented, gently
curving crown to the building.
-From this crest, the roof descends in a curve following the
toroidal geometry of light cables, metal, and glass toward the
south.
-The roof intersects with an outwardly inclined and curved
glass wall(which contains the foyer with a southern view).
-The tensile forces of the suspended glass foyer roof are
counteracted by a series of cables tying down the structure to
anchors at the entrance terrace
9. The curved, segmented northern walls are sheathed in
silvery stainless steel and punctuated by acid etched,
limestone-colored, precast concrete perpendicular walls.
-The roof is stainless steel over the performing halls,
changing to glass over the foyers .
-The theater facades are clad in veneer plaster forming
continuous curved, stacked balconies.
-The lobby bars form sculptural shapes visible under the
glass structure
