The simplicity of bonding can be misleading. The technique undoubtedly can be misused, not only by an inexperienced clinician but also by more experienced orthodontists who do not perform procedures with care.
Success in bonding requires understanding of and adherence to accepted orthodontic and preventive dentistry principles.
The advantages and disadvantages of bonding versus banding of different teeth must be weighed according to each practitioner’s preferences, skill, and experience.
Bonding should be considered as part of a modern preventive package that also includes a strict oral hygiene program, fluoride supplementation, and the use of simple yet effective appliances. In other words, complicated mechanics with abundant use of coil springs and multilooped arches lends itself less well to bonding and easily can compromise the integrity of tooth enamel and gingival tissues around brackets on small bonding bases.

Bonding in orthodontics involves applying composite resin to brackets and bonding them directly to etched enamel. The history of bonding includes developments like acid etching to increase adhesion. Advantages include esthetics, easier placement, and reduced risk of decay. Factors like enamel composition, saliva contamination, and acid concentration affect bonding. The bonding procedure involves cleaning, etching with phosphoric acid to create a frosted appearance, drying thoroughly, applying adhesive, and curing it to bond the bracket.

1. Bonding involves cleaning the enamel, conditioning it using acid, and applying adhesive resin to chemically bond brackets. Proper moisture control and enamel pretreatment are important for achieving optimal bond strength.
2. Various adhesive materials like composite resins, glass ionomer cements, and self-etching primers are used. Different light curing sources help polymerize the adhesives. Trays can aid in accurate bracket placement.
3. Debonding requires carefully removing brackets and cleaning residual adhesive to minimize enamel damage. Daily fluoride and good oral hygiene help prevent decalcification during treatment. Polishing can remove superficial discoloration when remineralization is exhausted.

This document discusses adhesive science and bonding in orthodontics. It covers the rationale of adhesive science including different attractive forces between molecules. It describes the structure of enamel, factors affecting its solubility, and morphology. It discusses advantages and disadvantages of banding versus direct bonding. The document outlines the broad rationale of adhesive science, bonding procedure including cleaning, enamel conditioning, and bonding. It discusses alternatives to acid etching for enamel pretreatment and iatrogenic factors from bonding.
This presentation is about BONDING in Orthodontics and its reference is "Contemporary Orthodontics by William R. Proffit, Henry W. Fields, and David M. Sarver"
Orthodontic adhesives have progressed through five generations, moving from unfilled acrylic resins to modern light-cured resin composites. First generation adhesives were unfilled poly(methyl methacrylate) that caused enamel damage. Second generation used UV light activation but had radiation hazards. Third generation introduced two-paste filler systems like Concise. Fourth generation were "no-mix" but had inhomogeneous curing. Current fifth generation utilize visible light curing for safer, deeper curing without diminishing over time.
Indirect bonding involves placing orthodontic brackets onto dental models or casts in the lab, then transferring them to the patient's teeth using transfer trays. There are several methods for indirect bonding, including the Thomas method using double sealant technique, Knights method bonding brackets directly to casts, and Sondhi's method using Bioplast trays. Indirect bonding provides more accurate bracket placement compared to direct bonding but requires extra lab time and carries risks of adhesive flash or bracket loss during transfer.

The document discusses mini implants used in orthodontics. It covers the definition and history of implants, parts and types of implants, bone physiology related to implants, indications and contraindications for implants, and treatment planning considerations for implants. The types of implants discussed include root form, blade form, mini-screws, and plates based on their shape, material, and area of implantation. Bone healing after implantation and osseointegration are also summarized.
This document discusses acid etching of dental surfaces. It describes how acid etching was first proposed in 1955 to increase bond strength between composite resin and enamel. Acid etching removes enamel and creates an irregular porous surface that allows resin to penetrate through micromechanical interlocking, improving bond strength. Factors like acid type/concentration, etching duration, and fluoride levels can affect bonding. While acid etching is effective, some alternatives under investigation include crystal growth solutions, air abrasion, and lasers, but they have not achieved bond strengths as high as acid etching.

This document provides an overview of dental composite materials. It begins with an introduction and then discusses the history, definitions, indications, advantages, disadvantages, and classifications of composites. It describes the composition of composites including the resin matrix, inorganic fillers, and coupling agents. Different types of composites are explained such as traditional composites, small particle composites, microfilled composites, hybrid composites, and nanofilled composites. Recent advances like flowable composites, packable composites, antibacterial composites, nanocomposites, ormocers, compomers, and smart composites are also summarized.
Composite materials are made of a resin matrix and filler particles. They have superior properties to their individual components. There are several types of composites classified by filler particle size: macrofilled (8-12 μm), small particle (1-5 μm), microfilled (0.04-0.4 μm), and hybrid (1 μm). Macrofilled composites have the largest particles and produce the roughest surfaces, while microfilled composites have the smallest particles and smoothest surfaces. Hybrid composites have a mixture of particle sizes. The different types have various indications for use depending on their mechanical properties and ability to be polished.
This document discusses various indirect bonding techniques in orthodontics. It describes the limitations of direct bonding and advantages of indirect bonding. Several pioneers of indirect bonding techniques are cited from the 1970s onwards. The document outlines the basic procedure for indirect bonding using silicone transfer trays or the double sealant technique. This study evaluated the shear bond strength between acrylic resin teeth and denture bases when using different surface conditioning materials. Acrylic teeth were treated with either monomer or a silane coupling agent and tested against an untreated control group. Bond strength was highest for teeth treated with the silane coupling agent, followed by monomer, with the control group showing the lowest bond strength. The results suggest that surface treatment of acrylic teeth can improve bonding to denture bases and help prevent debonding failures.

Recent advances in orthodontics allow for better treatment results with fewer visits and shorter treatment times. New materials like self-ligating brackets, nickel-titanium wires, and bonding agents that adhere to porcelain provide more options with less friction and faster tooth movement. Digital technologies and customized clear aligners also give orthodontists modern solutions to longstanding challenges of dental alignment and jaw development.
This document discusses various techniques for debonding orthodontic brackets, including mechanical debonding with pliers, electrothermal debonding using heat, and chemical solvents. It notes that debonding ceramic brackets can be more difficult than metal brackets due to the stronger bond from silane coupling agents. Different debonding techniques are recommended depending on the specific ceramic bracket type to avoid bracket fracture or enamel damage. The document provides details on specific debonding tools and methods for various popular ceramic brackets.

Use of modified tooth forms in complete denture occlusion / dental implant...Indian dental academy
This document discusses dental occlusion concepts and philosophies for complete dentures. It introduces key terms like physiologic occlusion and defines different occlusion schemes like balanced articulation and monoplane articulation. The document discusses advantages and disadvantages of using anatomic versus non-anatomic teeth for complete dentures. It also outlines requirements for maintaining denture stability, such as balanced occlusal contacts and control of horizontal forces. The goal of occlusion for complete dentures is to re-establish the homeostasis of the masticatory system disrupted by edentulism.

How to Make a Field Mandatory in Odoo 17Celine George
In Odoo, making a field required can be done through both Python code and XML views. When you set the required attribute to True in Python code, it makes the field required across all views where it's used. Conversely, when you set the required attribute in XML views, it makes the field required only in the context of that particular view.
This document provides an overview of wound healing, its functions, stages, mechanisms, factors affecting it, and complications.
A wound is a break in the integrity of the skin or tissues, which may be associated with disruption of the structure and function.
Healing is the body’s response to injury in an attempt to restore normal structure and functions.
Healing can occur in two ways: Regeneration and Repair
There are 4 phases of wound healing: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. This document also describes the mechanism of wound healing. Factors that affect healing include infection, uncontrolled diabetes, poor nutrition, age, anemia, the presence of foreign bodies, etc.
Complications of wound healing like infection, hyperpigmentation of scar, contractures, and keloid formation.

28. BOND STRENGTH
“The bond between
enamel and orthodontic
bracket is unique”
www.indiandentalacademy.com
29. It is intended to be strong yet temporary
Required to be intact for at least 2 years
Withstand orthodontic forces and forces of
occlusion
Must be broken with minimum amount of
trauma - to tooth and patient
www.indiandentalacademy.com
30. Numerous adhesives and bracket configurations
Bond testing – bonding potential of new systems
Goals of bond testing –
1. Measure force of debonding
2. Observe location of bond failure
www.indiandentalacademy.com
31. 1. Debonding force –
Force on bracket during mastication – 40 to 120 N
Newtons(N), pounds(lbs), kilograms(kg)
Misleading – substantial differences in bonding
areas of brackets tested
Bracket bases – different geometries
www.indiandentalacademy.com
32. BOND STRENGTH:
Force of debonding divided by area of bonded
interface
MPa, kg/cm2
, psi
Reynolds et al –optimum bond strength –
6 to 8 MPa
Various factors affecting bond strength
www.indiandentalacademy.com
33. 2. Bond failure:

39. Types of tests:
1. Clinical Simulation Model – tooth + bracket
Clinically relevant
Bond failure at both interfaces – weak link
cannot be identified
www.indiandentalacademy.com
40. 2. Isolated Interface Model
Both interfaces studied separately
Metal bracket – adhesive interface – bond failure
common
www.indiandentalacademy.com
41. 2. CLINICAL STUDIES
Clinical bracket retention – FAILURE RATE
No. of brackets that failed over the study
period by the no. of brackets bonded
www.indiandentalacademy.com
42. Bracket failure rate affected by –
1. Age and sex of patient
2. Treatment mechanics
3. Operator
4. Tooth type
Lack of standardized protocols for lab and
clinical testing
www.indiandentalacademy.com
43. Intraoral aging of orthodontic materials : The
picture we miss and its clinical relevance
-AJO-DO 2005
-Eliades and Bourauel
To analyze the effect of various aging variables
affecting the structure and properties of
polymeric and metallic orthodontic materials
www.indiandentalacademy.com
44. Clinical requirement of bond strength based on
1975 article by Reynolds – 6 to 8 MPa
Cited more than 150 times in literature
Not accurate –
1. Conjectural – based on vaguely assumed load
application during mechanotherapy
2. Does not account for stresses during mastication
of hard food / higher chewing velocity
3. Does not include aging of polymeric adhesive
and associated environment stress fatigue
phenomenon www.indiandentalacademy.com
45. CONCLUSION:
1. Intraoral aging – modifies physical and
mechanical properties – bond failure at lower
magnitudes
2. Bond strength data interpretation – limited to
relative effectiveness of adhesives and not
extrapolated to clinical ‘Gold standard’
3. Understand limitations of materials arising
from aging, modify expectations and monitor
treatment progress

47. Orthodontic bonding to artificial tooth surfaces:
Clinical versus laboratory findings – AJO-DO 2000
- Bjorn Zachrisson
Striking difference between lab and clinical findings
1. Continually increasing tensile or shear load
applied in lab - not a true representative of
clinical force application
2. Type of debonding forces
3. Complex oral environment not reproducible in
lab – temp, stresses, humidity, acidity, plaque
www.indiandentalacademy.com
48. Lab studies – which product / material most
valuable to include in supplementary clinical
evaluation
CLINICAL SUCCESS IS THE FINAL TEST.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
49. DEBONDING
“The entire cycle of bonding,
treatment and debonding
should preserve the integrity
of enamel as far as
possible.”
www.indiandentalacademy.com
50. After debonding – tooth exposed to oral
environment for the remainder of the life of
the tooth
As important to debond safely as it is to bond
strongly
Greater strength of adhesives – potential
damage during debonding
www.indiandentalacademy.com
51. Definition:
To remove the attachment and all the adhesive
resin from the tooth and restore the surface as
closely as possible to its pre-treatment
condition without inducing iatrogenic
damage.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
52. DEBANDING:
Retained by elasticity of band material
GIC / Zn-phosphate – no strong bond to
enamel
No risk of enamel damage
Procedure:
1. Band-removing plier
2. Break cement attachment and lift off band
3. Maxillary – first debonding force – palatal
4. Mandibular – buccal
5. Residual cement - scaling
www.indiandentalacademy.com
53. DEBONDING OF BRACKETS:
Principles:
1. Minimum damage to enamel – fracture
• Within bonding material itself
• Between bracket – resin – most desirable
• Between resin – enamel - undesirable
1. Failure has to be induced between bracket and
resin
2. Distorting metal bracket base – non-reusable
3. Remaining adhesive cleaned-up
www.indiandentalacademy.com
54. 5. Debonding ceramic brackets problematic -
6. Bracket bases cannot be distorted
• Grind brackets – rotary instruments
• Mechanical instead of chemical bond
between base and resin
• Heat to soften resin, for easy removal –
electrothermal / lasers

brackets
Designed for specific bracket design
www.indiandentalacademy.com
67. Advantages of Laser debonding-
1. Compact debonding instrument - atraumatic
debonding
2. Heat produced is localised and controlled

1. Remove / finish treatment in shortest time?
2. Removal – regression of lesions
- provided other factors removed
3. Ogaard et al – white spots – fluoride agents
- not on buccal lesions – arrested
- remineralization by saliva
4. Croll and Cavanagh – Acid pumice abrasion
- 18% HCl + Pumice
- rub on affected enamelwww.indiandentalacademy.com
86. Clinical Implications
Use of brackets that have mechanical retention.

most of the composite on the tooth surface.
Avoid scraping away adhesive remnants with
hand instruments.
Use of slow speed tungsten carbide bur for
finishing.
Intentional leaving of adhesive to seal pre-
treatment surface irregularities.
