From the 2001 General Election results, we can deliberately see that through our pluralist

count, and judging by labour s landslide victory. In fact, we can see that Labour did not even
gain a majority from voters but only from seats. Another example is the Liberal Democrats; they
received 18.3% of the electorate s votes, but only received less than half the percentage of seats
at 7.9%. Labour also received a mere 9% more votes than the Conservatives, but yet still
managed to acquire around 247 more seats. This also shows that some parties, especially Labour
in the 2001 elections, are over represented and this can lead eventually lead to a dangerous one

The South, on the other hand, was highly dependent upon the institution of slavery. It was still
primarily an agricultural society that needed as many laborers as possible in order for the
plantation owners to make ends meet. According to historian Douglas Harper, In 1793 came the
cotton gin, which brought a 50 fold increase in the average daily output of short staple cotton,
promoted the rapid expansion of a cotton kingdom across the Deep South, and made large scale
slaveryprofitable. Because of this, the slave became an essential tool to the farmers of the south;
more money became invested in slavery rather than in industrial improvements. Based upon the
1860 U.S. Census, there were almost a whopping total of four million slaves in the South alone.
In fact, the more slaves an owner had, the more prestige. Most slave owners owned fewer than
five slaves, and only 12 percent of Southerners had twenty or more slaves. Many whites who had
no slaves looked with envy upon the wealthy, and to a degree admired them. This hierarchy had a
clearly defined social structure which created distinctions between rich and poor whites as well as
racial segregation. This agricultural society and its strict hierarchy only increased the social and

Poverty is a complex issue that has always been around, but has been a growing concern over
time. Holding a debate on the issue of poverty, is one that can easily go awry due to it s
complexity and emotional aspects. In order to evaluate the debate, both teams need to fully
understand the proposal and clearly articulate their stance.
The debate teams need to be able to clearly explain their position, refute the opponent s argument,
provide solutions, provide a stimulating counter examination, and effectively answer questions
from the judges. Other logistical aspects of the debate that will be judged on is the ability to
efficiently use time and allocate it between team members, as well as refraining from interrupting
other debates and keeping an appropriate volume and demeanor.

demographics and all areas of the world that struggle with at least one mental illness. The
unfortunate part of this fact is that there is also a large amount of stigma surrounding mental
illnesses which causes mental illness patients to feel alone and unable seek needed help. Most of
this stigma is due to a lack of education and understanding of mental illnesses. This ignorance is
what creates the majority of negative connotations related to mental illnesses. But what would
happen if our society had the opportunity to become more educated about mental illnesses? It is
important to educate people about mental illness stigma in order to prevent discriminationand
prejudice.
A study used a total of 303 adolescents that all completed a revised version of an Attribution
Questionnaire that described four different patients: a peer with a mental illness, a peer with a
mental illness caused by a brain tumor, a peer with an alcohol abuse problem, and a peer with
leukemia. The adolescents discriminated among conditions. Important variables that lead to
discrimination were blame and dangerousness. Adolescents who believed that mental illness
patients are responsible for their own illnesses believed that those patients are dangerous. This
caused the adolescents to discriminate more towards these patients. However, the adolescents did
not feel the same way toward alcohol abuse patients.
