Bioremediation uses microorganisms to degrade contaminants into less toxic or non-toxic substances. It became popular in the 21st century after Dr. Anandamohan Chakrobarty discovered that Pseudomonas putida bacteria could degrade oil spills. For effective bioremediation, certain conditions must be met including an adequate microbial population, oxygen levels, water, nutrients, temperature, and pH. There are two main types - natural bioremediation which has occurred for millions of years as microbes break down dead organic matter, and managed bioremediation where humans apply the process by controlling soil conditions to degrade contaminants.

Bioremediation
Bioremediation refers to the use of either naturally occurring or
deliberately introduced microorganisms to consume and break down
environmental pollutants, in order to clean a polluted site.
The process of bioremediation enhances the rate of the natural
microbial degradation of contaminants by supplementing the
indigenous microorganisms (bacteria or fungi) with nutrients, carbon
sources, or electron donors (biostimulation, biorestoration) or by
adding an enriched culture of microorganisms that have specific
characteristics that allow them to degrade the desired contaminant at
a quicker rate (bioaugmentation).
It is a cleaning process that degrades dangerous contaminants using
naturally existing microbes. These bacteria may consume and
degrade organic chemicals as a source of food and energy, degrade
organic substances that are dangerous to living creatures, including
humans, and degrade the organic pollutants into inert products.
Because the bacteria already exist in nature, they offer no pollution
concern

PROTECTION
Bioremediation is defined as ‘the process of using microorganisms to remove
the environmental pollutants where microbes serve as scavengers’.
• The removal of organic wastes by microbes leads to environmental clean-up.
The other names/terms used for bioremediation are biotreatment,
bioreclamation, and biorestoration.
• The term “Xenobiotics” (xenos means foreign) refers to the unnatural, foreign
and synthetic chemicals, such as pesticides, herbicides, refrigerants, solvents
and other organic compounds.
• The microbial degradation of xenobiotics also helps in reducing the
environmental pollution. Pseudomonas which is a soil microorganism
effectively degrades xenobiotics.
• Different strains of Pseudomonas that are capable of detoxifying more than
100 organic compounds (e.g. phenols, biphenyls, organophosphates,
naphthalene, etc.) have been identified.
• Some other microbial strains are also known to have the capacity to degrade
xenobiotics such as Mycobacterium, Alcaligenes, Norcardia, etc.

The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. 9. NATURAL BIOREMEDIATION
• Natural bioremediation has been occurring for millions of
years. Biodegradation of dead vegetation and dead
animals is a kind of bioremediation. It is a natural part of
the carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur cycles. Chemical energy
present in waste materials is used by microorganisms to
grow while they convert organic carbon and hydrogen to
carbon dioxide and water.

11. MANAGED BIOREMEDIATION
• When bioremediation is applied by people, microbial biodegradation
processes are said to be managed. However, bioremediation takes place
naturally and often it occurs prior to efforts to manage the process. One of
the first examples of managed bioremediation was land farming (refers to
the managed biodegradation of organic compounds that are distributed onto
the soil surface, fertilized, and then tilled). Many petroleum companies
have used it. High-molecular-weight organic compounds (i.e., oil sludges
and wastes) are spread onto soil and then tilled into the ground with
fertilizer, as part of the managed bioremediation process. Good conditions
for microbial biodegradation are maintained by controlling soil moisture
and soil nutrients. In 1974 R.L. Raymond was awarded a patent for the
bioremediation of gasoline. This was one of the first patents granted for a
bioremediation process.
• Since about 1980, prepared bed systems have been used for
bioremediation. In this approach, contaminated soil is excavated and
deposited with appropriate fertilizers into a shallow layer over
an impermeable base. Conditions are managed to obtain biodegradation of
the contaminants of concern.
12. COMPOSTINGCOMPOSTING
Composting has been used as a bioremediation
process for many different organic compounds. It is
widely employed to recycle nutrients in garden and
yard waste. A finished compost can be used as a soil
conditioner. Extending composting technology to new
bioremediation applications requires experiments. The
biodegradation process must be effective within the
context of existing environmental conditions, and
odors and gases that are generated by the process have
to be strictly controlled.
