Editor's Notes

  • #3 In the following presentation, we will look at a few new areas in technology that have made a giant leap forward in the world of psychology. The advancement of technology, added to new forms of technology have enabled psychology to now find the causes of many disorders, making treatment now a possibility for millions of people.Laboratories, now contain many advancements of technology that now can take minutes compared to days, in the Laboratories of the past making diagnosis and treatment faster than ever. Research has improved in many areas such as Laboratories that now specialize, such as “Center for modeling, simulation, and analysis (CMSA) (PhysOrg.com, 2009, paragraph 2).”The future holds many new and improved technologies, with no limit on how far technology and the world of psychology will go, and even receiving counseling and therapy over the internet may one day become the way to receive help for many people possibly unable to leave their homes due to other restrictions. It is a exciting and new world that we are entering where technology and psychology are beginning to work hand and hand to help people once thought to not have a chance at a normal life now living full and productive lives
  • #4 Technology has come a long way in the last 100 years. Laboratories have always been part of the research in Psychology and the development of theories. Technology has advanced the ability to store and retrieve information with a simple click of a button on a computer. With the advancement of Psychology and technology there have been many theories such as the evolutionary Psychology theory based on the idea with information technology and the multiple medical advance machinery that can analysis the research gathered. “Traditional and emerging information systems topics that could benefit from evolutionary psychological theorizing include but are not limited to information systems development , technology-meditative learning, human-computer interface design, and use of virtual worlds to simulate and predict large scale group behavior in catastrophic situations” (Kock, N., 2009, pg. 2). With these advancements research can be cataloged and studied on a worldwide base and information can be exchanged in a matter of minutes. Though information technology has come a long way there are multiple emotional feelings towards the advancements of technology in laboratories. “One of the major flaws as shown in studies is that the usage of Information Technology shows that cognitive models do not capture all of the antecedents of behaviors’ (Beaudry, A., & Pinsonneault, A., 2010, pg. 2). While some believe that the technology has affected the laboratories to become detached with the human connection during research but it does bring together the ability to transfer information over great areas.
  • #5 Center for modeling, simulation, and analysis (CMSA) is a unique lab that combines psychology and technology, and focuses its research on work performed by human factors engineers” (PhysOrg.com, 2009, paragraph 2). CMSA is one of the latest laboratories that use the approach of laboratories and technology for Psychology. CMSA in located at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. This is just one of many different laboratories that are currently in use for the study of cognitive psychology most Universities have at least one if not more laboratories that are all researching psychology. The Military and Government have been working with CMSA but they also have their own programs that combine Psychology, laboratories, and technology. Most Universities and Community colleges had laboratories to study Psychology and Laboratories with advance Technology at their disposal.
  • #6 A computer in modeling (Computer simulation) is a program that creates models of a particular system. This system serves as great use to astrophysics, chemistry, biology, an psychology. Computers in modeling were developed shortly after the creation of the Manhattan Project in World War II. It was a method used in order to evaluate the nuclear detonation. In psychology, computers in modeling are used to illustrate specific scenarios to study the answers to solve the problem. With use of computers in modeling, a variety of solutions can be developed with any given situation.
  • #7 An example of computers in modeling in psychology is the (ACT-R) (Slide 2)(ACT-R) was created by Jon Robert Anderson. The (ACT-R) shows the basic thinking processes of the human brain and how information is perceived. This method was inspired by cognitive neuroscience
  • #8 Computer assigned therapy and cognitive psychology is not something that everyone can understand but as technology and the information age grows more people can be reached through their computers than through person to person communication. The most common diseases treated with computer assigned therapy is depression and anxiety. Some benefits of this form of therapy are privacy, reliability, flexibility, empowerment, variety, accessibility, and therapist support (Mitchell, J., Howell, C., Turnbull, D., & Murphy, M. 2005, pg. 3). Some common obstacles that are in the way of people seeking treatment are expenses, time, frequency of sessions, taking time of work, and traveling to sessions (Przeworski, A., & Newman, M. G., 2006, pg. 1). Mostly the problem is locations in rural locations it can be hard to find locations that give treatment so computer assigned therapy is great for those who are having any of these problems. There are many other benefits for the therapist they can treat and help multiple people in many different areas and it can be low cost. The problem with Computer therapy is it can give people the disconnected feeling. Some will not have the human connection of talking to a person in the flesh. Some people also have other problems that can interfere with their ability to benefit from this form of therapy some problems that occur are disease severity, co-morbidity, motivation, literacy level, learning style, social and cultural values can uptake and effectiveness of computer assisted therapy (Mitchell, J., Howell, C., Turnbull, D., & Murphy, M., 2005, pg. 2).
  • #9 This list is an example list given by Medicare benefits schedule. Psycho-Education involved the provision of verbal and written information on topics such as signs and symptoms of depression (Mitchell, J., Howell, C., Turnbull, D., & Murphy, M., 2005, pg. 6). Basically it helps to educate the patient as to disease and how to identify them and seek treatment. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is used to teach members to facilitate change in thoughts and subsequent behavior (Mitchell, J., Howell, C., Turnbull, D., & Murphy, M., 2005, pg. 6). This involves many different types of therapy that help to identify the problems for the individuals and help them change the way they are identifying with their problems. Relaxation is as it sounds the goal is to teach the patient to relax and the different relaxation therapies such as meditation. Skills Training has many different approaches but the goal is to teach the individual to look at the situations in a different perspective and understand their lives in a different point of view this is usually accomplished with journals the person keeps on their everyday lives and discussed during therapy sessions. Interpersonal therapy is where they talk to doctor or in group sessions about what bothers them and how they can be assisted.
  • #10 The future holds many different changes and with the advancement of the internet more therapist and Doctors and their Patients are able to reach out to each other and find ways to advance therapy through these means. “While there have been an increasing amount of people using the internet to provide counseling and therapy to the public there has been no actual record of how many Practitioners are actually providing the service but there are estimated few Practitioners that are currently offering counseling vs. the internet” (Maheu, M. M., & Gordon, B. L., 2000, pg. 1). The positive effects on society as a whole because of the computer assigned therapy is that more people will be able to get help via the internet and live chats with their Practitioners. This overcomes many obsticles that some patients curretly have to account for while trying to seek treatment for their Psychological disorders. With the increase of most Hospitals and other Facilities going to Iternet and intranet the chances are relatively good that Computer assigned therapy and its popularity among Pratitioners will increase. Though the negative effects of society becomeing detached on a physical level and some patients may need to actually still find treatment in facilities and other patients will try and find their own solutions via the internet which could lead to differences between patient and Practitioner.
  • #11 “Despite limitations on research subjects and the variety of people that actively seek treatment there is no doubt that the number of studies done will increase considerably in the next several years, while the promising results of the studies currently done indicate that the Internet will assume a major role in the delivery in computer based technology to patients with health problems” (Cuijpers, P., Straten, A., & Andersson, G., 2008, pg. 8). Computer assigned therapy has increased in popularity in the last ten years though some Practitioners are not embracing the idea of not spending time with their patients face to face. It has been found that more patients are able to be reached and are willing to find time to seek treatment with the advancement of this form of therapy. This form of therapy has been found to be used by every gender, race, age, and culture despite limitations of availability and advancements. This therapy according to research has been picking up popularity over the last ten years and is at an increasing momentum as the internet and intranets services are becoming the major forms of communication throughout the world.
  • #12 In conclusion we have taking a look at many new wonders in the world of technology and psychology and the great things that are now happening and continue to happen to make people’s lives now full and productive where once, years ago they were thought of as “hopeless”. Research, thanks to the advancement of technology are now being studied and cures found for many disorders that was once, years ago thought impossible to find reasons for or medications and other things that could be used to help the person live a better quality of life. Each new discovery made in technology and laboratories is opening the doors in the world of psychology even more helping to create better and happier lives for millions.
