Introduction to Biogas
 Biogas typically refers to a gas produced by
the breakdown of organic matter in the
absence of oxygen.
 It is a renewable energy source, like solar
and wind energy.
 Can also be produced by different raw
material like Sugarcane residue and maize
silage

 Biogas is produced by the anaerobic
digestion or fermentation of
biodegradable materials such as
manure, sewage, municipal
waste, green waste, plant material, and
crops.
 Biogas comprises primarily methane
(CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) and
may have small amounts of hydrogen
sulphide (H2S), moisture.

 The gases methane, hydrogen, and
carbon monoxide (CO) can be
combusted or oxidized with oxygen. This
energy release allows biogas to be used
as a fuel.
 Biogas can also be cleaned and
upgraded to natural gas standards when
it becomes bio methane.
Production
 Bio gas can be produced using
anaerobic digesters.
 During the process, as an air-tight tank
transforms biomass waste into methane
producing renewable energy that can be
used for heating, electricity
Biogas Plant
Anaerobic Digestors
 Anaerobic digestion is a series of
processes in which microorganisms break
down biodegradable material in the
absence of oxygen.
 It is used for industrial or domestic
purposes to manage waste and/or to
release energy.
 The digestion process begins with bacterial
hydrolysis of the input materials to break
down insoluble organic polymers, such as
carbohydrates, and make them available
for other bacteria.
Production Process
 Acidogenic bacteria then convert the
sugars and amino acids into carbon
dioxide, hydrogen, ammonia, and organic
acids.
 Acetogenic bacteria then convert these
resulting organic acids into acetic acid,
along with additional ammonia, hydrogen,
and carbon dioxide.
 Finally, methanogens convert these
products to methane and carbon dioxide.

Composition
 The composition of biogas varies
depending upon the origin of the
anaerobic digestion process.
 Usually methane is 50 %, Co2 25 %, N
0-10 % , H 0-1 %.

at domestic or commercial purpose.
 For production of Electricity.
 In Decomposition of Biodegradable
Materials

Biogas production

  • 3. Introduction to Biogas  Biogas typically refers to a gas produced by the breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen.  It is a renewable energy source, like solar and wind energy.  Can also be produced by different raw material like Sugarcane residue and maize silage

Cont…  Biogas is produced by the anaerobic digestion or fermentation of biodegradable materials such as manure, sewage, municipal waste, green waste, plant material, and crops.  Biogas comprises primarily methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) and may have small amounts of hydrogen sulphide (H2S), moisture.
  • 5. Cont…  The gases methane, hydrogen, and carbon monoxide (CO) can be combusted or oxidized with oxygen. This energy release allows biogas to be used as a fuel.  Biogas can also be cleaned and upgraded to natural gas standards when it becomes bio methane.
  • 6. Production  Bio gas can be produced using anaerobic digesters.  During the process, as an air-tight tank transforms biomass waste into methane producing renewable energy that can be used for heating, electricity

Anaerobic Digestors  Anaerobic digestion is a series of processes in which microorganisms break down biodegradable material in the absence of oxygen.  It is used for industrial or domestic purposes to manage waste and/or to release energy.  The digestion process begins with bacterial hydrolysis of the input materials to break down insoluble organic polymers, such as carbohydrates, and make them available for other bacteria.

Production Process  Acidogenic bacteria then convert the sugars and amino acids into carbon dioxide, hydrogen, ammonia, and organic acids.  Acetogenic bacteria then convert these resulting organic acids into acetic acid, along with additional ammonia, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide.  Finally, methanogens convert these products to methane and carbon dioxide.
  • 11. Composition  The composition of biogas varies depending upon the origin of the anaerobic digestion process.  Usually methane is 50 %, Co2 25 %, N 0-10 % , H 0-1 %.
