BIO120: CHEMICAL SAFETY
Pool & Spa University
POOL CHEMICAL SAFETY
➤ Chemicals protect customers when they’re used correctly in
swimming pools or spas, but they may be hazardous if
mishandled, improperly stored or contaminated.
➤ Swimming pool and spa sanitizers and oxidizers are very active
chemical agents and they must be stored, handled and treated
with respect, care and common sense.
➤ This course will cover the safe handling and storage of
sanitizers (chemicals designed to kill bacteria) and oxidizers
(shocks, or chemicals designed to break down contaminants)
and what to do if a spill occurs or if first aid is required.
➤ We will also dive into some business-specific safety regulations
regarding the handling of oxidizers.

SAFE HANDLING
➤ Read all labels carefully and follow directions precisely. Never mix
chemicals together. Chemical reactions, toxic fumes, explosions or a
fire my occur. Add each chemical to pool water separately.
➤ All chlorine is not the same. Never mix two chlorine products from
different containers regardless of their similarities.
➤ If label instructions call for mixing or diluting with water, use a clean,
dry container.
➤ Never add water to dry chemical; always add chemicals to
water.
➤ Always use a separate, clean scoop when measuring chemicals. Do not
interchange scoops or place a wet scoop back in any chemical container.
➤ Never mix chemical products in automatic feeders.
SAFE HANDLING
➤ When adding products through skimmer, be sure only one product is
added at a time.
➤ Rinse out empty bags of shock or containers of chemicals in pool water; it
gets the full value of the product in your pool and cleans chemical residue
from the container.
➤ Always hold and open chemical containers in a well-ventilated area with
lid or cap pointed away from your face. Avoid breathing fumes and avoid
letting chemicals contact eyes, nose, mouth or skin.
➤ Always keep chemical containers closed when not in use.
➤ Do not smoke around chemicals. Some fumes can be highly flammable.
Pool and spa sanitizes and oxidizers can be ignited by a lighted cigarette
or match.
➤ Use exact quantities specified, never more. Do not overdose.
SAFE STORAGE
➤ Do not allow chemicals to stay in your car for a long period of time.
Unload and store them as soon as you get home. Brace liquids from
tipping over while in car.
➤ Never store household cleaners, detergents, bleaches, paints, oils,
greases, waxes, solvents, ammonia, fertilizers or gasoline near the pool
sanitizers and oxidizers. All of these household chemicals are
incompatible with pool sanitizers and oxidizers and, if they accidentally
mix together, could cause a chemical reaction that will give off irritating,
toxic or noxious fumes, or result in a fire or explosion.
➤ Store chemicals in a cool, dry and well-ventilated space.
➤ Keep chemicals away from heaters or open flames.
➤ Do not smoke in storage areas or when handling chemicals. Pool and spa
sanitizers and oxidizers can be ignited by a lighted cigarette or match.
SAFE STORAGE
➤ Separate sanitizers and oxidizers from each other and from other
chemicals with:
➤ Solid shelving
➤ Solid vertical partitions
➤ Large, open space
➤ Separate large containers or bins
➤ Intervening inert materials (sand, DE, etc)
➤ Never store liquids directly above sanitizers and oxidizers. They may
accidentally leak and contaminate packaging of sanitizers and oxidizers.
➤ Many pool and spa sanitizers are corrosive, so don’t store them near
metal products like bicycles, lawn mowers, cars, etc. because they may
cause rust.
ADDITIONAL STORAGE GUIDELINES
➤ Display organic oxidizers (i.e. dichlor shocks) and cyanuric
acid away from inorganic oxidizers (i.e. cal hypo shocks).
➤ When bagging products, keep individual bags of Smart
Shock®
and Burnout®
73 in separate bags.
➤ Display liquid products under dry products to prevent drips.
➤ Store muriatic acid away from all other chemicals, including
salt.
➤ Maintain physical and digital copies of the Safety Data Sheets
(SDS) for every chemical displayed in showrooms or stored in
warehouses.
SAFETY DATA SHEETS
➤ Safety Data Sheets (SDS, formerly MSDS) are a widely used system
for cataloging information on chemicals, chemical compounds, and
chemical mixtures. SDS information may include instructions for the
safe use and potential hazards associated with a particular material or
product. The SDS should be available for reference in the area where
the chemicals are being stored or in use.[1]
➤ SDS are maintained in a physical binder located in each retail
location as well as in Evosus as a download. SDS are also available to
download from MyBioGuard via a link in the Library.
➤ Consult with your manager on the location of the SDS binder to
provide to local emergency service personnel in the event of a spill or
injury on-site or to answer customer questions regarding a product.

HOW TO HANDLE SPILLS
➤ Be sure that no contaminant is present. Some common contaminants
are household cleaners, detergents, bleaches, paints, oils, greases,
waxes, solvents, ammonia, fertilizers, gasoline or kerosene.
➤ Use extreme caution when attempting to clean up any spilled
sanitizer or oxidizer that may have incompatible chemicals mixed
together. Isolate the spilled material in a clean, dry container away
from other stored chemicals, preferably outside the house or shed.
Call your BioGuard®
dealer or the manufacturer for disposal
instructions.
➤ If, at any point, evidence of a fire occurs, evacuate the area
immediately and call the fire department.
➤ We’ll go into detail on the proper procedures for how to handle a
spill.
HOW TO HANDLE SPILLS
➤ Provide ventilation and clear area of children and other
people.
➤ Wear protective gear, i.e. safety glasses, rubber gloves, etc.
➤ Use only clean, dry brooms, shovels and containers. Do not
use vacuum cleaners!
➤ Separate spilled material from original container. Never
return spilled material to original container.
➤ Never put spilled material in any sewer or stream.
➤ Small amounts of clean, spilled material may be put into your
pool water. Check water chemistry to avoid imbalance.
FIRST AID
➤ If an emergency occurs involving swimming pool and spa sanitizers or oxidizers,
immediately follow the first aid instructions given on the product label.
➤ Each product has specific instructions for how to treat eye contact, skin contact,
inhalation, and digestion incidents.
➤ Examples of instructions:
➤ Remove contaminated clothing; any clothing that has come into contact with
pool chemicals should be washed before reuse.
➤ Call a physician immediately.
➤ Skin contact: brush off excess chemical and flush with water for 15 minutes.
➤ Eye contact: hold eye open and flush for 15 minutes.
➤ Ingestion: immediately drink a large volume of water. Do not induce
vomiting.
➤ Inhalation: move person into fresh air.

BIO120: Chemical Safety

  • 1. BIO120: CHEMICAL SAFETY Pool & Spa University
  • 2. POOL CHEMICAL SAFETY ➤ Chemicals protect customers when they’re used correctly in swimming pools or spas, but they may be hazardous if mishandled, improperly stored or contaminated. ➤ Swimming pool and spa sanitizers and oxidizers are very active chemical agents and they must be stored, handled and treated with respect, care and common sense. ➤ This course will cover the safe handling and storage of sanitizers (chemicals designed to kill bacteria) and oxidizers (shocks, or chemicals designed to break down contaminants) and what to do if a spill occurs or if first aid is required. ➤ We will also dive into some business-specific safety regulations regarding the handling of oxidizers.
  • 3. OXIDIZERS ➤ Smart Shock® ➤ Easy Shock & Swim® ➤ Burnout® 73 ➤ Burnout® 3 ➤ Burnout® 35 ➤ Oxysheen® ➤ SoftSwim® C ➤ SpaGuard® Enhanced Shock ➤ SpaGuard® Spa Shock SANITIZERS ➤ Smart SilkGuard® Sticks ➤ SilkGuard® Tabs & Sticks ➤ Super Soluble ➤ PowerChlor® ➤ CLC® 3 & CLC® Classic ➤ Lithium Hypochlorite ➤ Brominating Tablets ➤ SoftSwim® B ➤ SpaGuard® Chlorinating Concentrate ➤ SpaGuard® Brominating Concentrate
  • 4. SAFE HANDLING ➤ Read all labels carefully and follow directions precisely. Never mix chemicals together. Chemical reactions, toxic fumes, explosions or a fire my occur. Add each chemical to pool water separately. ➤ All chlorine is not the same. Never mix two chlorine products from different containers regardless of their similarities. ➤ If label instructions call for mixing or diluting with water, use a clean, dry container. ➤ Never add water to dry chemical; always add chemicals to water. ➤ Always use a separate, clean scoop when measuring chemicals. Do not interchange scoops or place a wet scoop back in any chemical container. ➤ Never mix chemical products in automatic feeders.
  • 5. SAFE HANDLING ➤ When adding products through skimmer, be sure only one product is added at a time. ➤ Rinse out empty bags of shock or containers of chemicals in pool water; it gets the full value of the product in your pool and cleans chemical residue from the container. ➤ Always hold and open chemical containers in a well-ventilated area with lid or cap pointed away from your face. Avoid breathing fumes and avoid letting chemicals contact eyes, nose, mouth or skin. ➤ Always keep chemical containers closed when not in use. ➤ Do not smoke around chemicals. Some fumes can be highly flammable. Pool and spa sanitizes and oxidizers can be ignited by a lighted cigarette or match. ➤ Use exact quantities specified, never more. Do not overdose.
  • 6. SAFE STORAGE ➤ Do not allow chemicals to stay in your car for a long period of time. Unload and store them as soon as you get home. Brace liquids from tipping over while in car. ➤ Never store household cleaners, detergents, bleaches, paints, oils, greases, waxes, solvents, ammonia, fertilizers or gasoline near the pool sanitizers and oxidizers. All of these household chemicals are incompatible with pool sanitizers and oxidizers and, if they accidentally mix together, could cause a chemical reaction that will give off irritating, toxic or noxious fumes, or result in a fire or explosion. ➤ Store chemicals in a cool, dry and well-ventilated space. ➤ Keep chemicals away from heaters or open flames. ➤ Do not smoke in storage areas or when handling chemicals. Pool and spa sanitizers and oxidizers can be ignited by a lighted cigarette or match.
  • 7. SAFE STORAGE ➤ Separate sanitizers and oxidizers from each other and from other chemicals with: ➤ Solid shelving ➤ Solid vertical partitions ➤ Large, open space ➤ Separate large containers or bins ➤ Intervening inert materials (sand, DE, etc) ➤ Never store liquids directly above sanitizers and oxidizers. They may accidentally leak and contaminate packaging of sanitizers and oxidizers. ➤ Many pool and spa sanitizers are corrosive, so don’t store them near metal products like bicycles, lawn mowers, cars, etc. because they may cause rust.
  • 8. ADDITIONAL STORAGE GUIDELINES ➤ Display organic oxidizers (i.e. dichlor shocks) and cyanuric acid away from inorganic oxidizers (i.e. cal hypo shocks). ➤ When bagging products, keep individual bags of Smart Shock® and Burnout® 73 in separate bags. ➤ Display liquid products under dry products to prevent drips. ➤ Store muriatic acid away from all other chemicals, including salt. ➤ Maintain physical and digital copies of the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for every chemical displayed in showrooms or stored in warehouses.
  • 9. SAFETY DATA SHEETS ➤ Safety Data Sheets (SDS, formerly MSDS) are a widely used system for cataloging information on chemicals, chemical compounds, and chemical mixtures. SDS information may include instructions for the safe use and potential hazards associated with a particular material or product. The SDS should be available for reference in the area where the chemicals are being stored or in use.[1] ➤ SDS are maintained in a physical binder located in each retail location as well as in Evosus as a download. SDS are also available to download from MyBioGuard via a link in the Library. ➤ Consult with your manager on the location of the SDS binder to provide to local emergency service personnel in the event of a spill or injury on-site or to answer customer questions regarding a product. 1 Information provided by Wikipedia.
  • 10. HOW TO HANDLE SPILLS ➤ Be sure that no contaminant is present. Some common contaminants are household cleaners, detergents, bleaches, paints, oils, greases, waxes, solvents, ammonia, fertilizers, gasoline or kerosene. ➤ Use extreme caution when attempting to clean up any spilled sanitizer or oxidizer that may have incompatible chemicals mixed together. Isolate the spilled material in a clean, dry container away from other stored chemicals, preferably outside the house or shed. Call your BioGuard® dealer or the manufacturer for disposal instructions. ➤ If, at any point, evidence of a fire occurs, evacuate the area immediately and call the fire department. ➤ We’ll go into detail on the proper procedures for how to handle a spill.
  • 11. HOW TO HANDLE SPILLS ➤ Provide ventilation and clear area of children and other people. ➤ Wear protective gear, i.e. safety glasses, rubber gloves, etc. ➤ Use only clean, dry brooms, shovels and containers. Do not use vacuum cleaners! ➤ Separate spilled material from original container. Never return spilled material to original container. ➤ Never put spilled material in any sewer or stream. ➤ Small amounts of clean, spilled material may be put into your pool water. Check water chemistry to avoid imbalance.
  • 12. FIRST AID ➤ If an emergency occurs involving swimming pool and spa sanitizers or oxidizers, immediately follow the first aid instructions given on the product label. ➤ Each product has specific instructions for how to treat eye contact, skin contact, inhalation, and digestion incidents. ➤ Examples of instructions: ➤ Remove contaminated clothing; any clothing that has come into contact with pool chemicals should be washed before reuse. ➤ Call a physician immediately. ➤ Skin contact: brush off excess chemical and flush with water for 15 minutes. ➤ Eye contact: hold eye open and flush for 15 minutes. ➤ Ingestion: immediately drink a large volume of water. Do not induce vomiting. ➤ Inhalation: move person into fresh air.
