How to do your part
Every year, thousands of workplace incidents involving hazardous
substances occur. These accidents happen daily, usually because
someone doesn’t understand the risks involved when using chemical-
based products. We do our utmost in the design of the containers and
labelling to ensure safety, but depend on you, the end user, to take
sensible precautions. A care home is a safe environment if you know what
the potential risks are and how to manage them.
Know your responsibilities
• As an employer: ‘It shall be the duty of every employer to ensure so
far as reasonably practical, the health, safety and welfare at work of
all his employees.’ - The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
• As an employee: ‘It shall be the duty of every employee while at work
to take reasonable care for the health and safety of himself and of

Key points to consider
• Have you assessed the risks to staff and others from exposure to
hazardous substances?
• Have you introduced appropriate precautions to control the risks?
• Do you inform, instruct and train staff about the risks and
precautions?
• Do you provide staff with appropriate protective equipment/clothing?
• Do you ensure that the precautions are used and procedures
are followed?
• Are hazardous substances stored safely, eg locked in a cupboard and
out of reach of vulnerable adults?
Training
Legislation regarding the use of hazardous substances is in place to
protect you, visitors to your care home and residents. NHG offers a
complementary training package to help you understand and manage
health risks, and satisfy the requirements of this law, known as The
Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH).
Comprising a training presentation DVD, workbook and quiz, it enables
you and your employees to understand your responsibilities in the control
of hazardous substances.
• Understand why a COSHH assessment is required and what
information it must contain.
• Develop an understanding of chemical hazards, how they cause harm
and the factors that affect the likelihood of harm.
• Learn how to control exposure to hazardous substances in a variety
of workplace situations.

Tips for Your Kitchen
How to Prevent the Spread of Bacteria.
• Keep your wash basin clean, provided with hot and
cold water, soap and preferably disposable paper
towels to dry hands.
• Ensure that equipment isn’t left in the washbasin -
that it is available for use. Wash hands frequently,
especially after handling raw food (eg raw meat and
unwashed vegetables).
• Between different tasks, clean and disinfect food
areas and equipment. Clear away used equipment
and clean any split food as you work. Do not let
food waste build up.
• Identify items that are used frequently - surfaces,
taps, handles, boards, and knives - and clean and
disinfect them regularly.
• Use cleaning and disinfection products that are
suitable for the job, and follow the instructions on
the label.
Dishwasher Care
• To avoid the build-up of limescale, and the
associated cost of repairs, ensure that the fitted
water softener is refilled regularly with salt.
• Hard water requires more detergent, so keep the

Hygiene is seen as a key indicator of

• Studies show that regularly washing your hands, especially after
going to the toilet or if you have a cold or flu, lowers the transmission
of diarrhoea and colds.
• Soap and water must be used if your hands are obviously soiled
or contaminated with bodily fluids, or when caring for people with
diarrheoa or vomiting. Wash your hands with soap for 15 seconds –
about the time it takes to sing Happy Birthday. Rinse thoroughly and
turn off the taps using a disposable paper towel. Dry your hands well,
preferably with a paper towel to avoid recontamination.
• Thoroughly dry surfaces after cleaning, or dampness may allow any
remaining germs to survive and, if there’s enough water, multiply.
Germs multiply quickly; within eight hours, one bacterium on a damp
cloth can multiply to six million.
