The cell theory developed from early microscopic studies of cells and contributions from multiple scientists. It has three main principles: all organisms are made of cells, all cells come from preexisting cells, and the cell is the basic unit of life. Cells can be either eukaryotic, containing a nucleus and organelles, or prokaryotic, lacking these structures. The cell theory provides a unifying concept for understanding biology at the cellular level.
