Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. What is GD ??????
• Group discussion i.e. GD is a way through which an
organization identifies whether the candidate has certain
personality traits that it desires in its members.
• Hence group discussion is simply a method instrumental in
judging the team spirit, leadership qualities, out of the box
thinking, and other managerial qualities in an individual.
• It is more a technical tool than a conventional test to check
one’s personality and communication skills.

3. GD Structure
• An average GD usually has 10 to 15 participants & the time
allotted for the discussion is normally twenty-thirty minutes.
• The GD process begins by the announcement of the topic to
the group, which is (usually) followed by a preparation time of
3 to 5 minutes.
• More than 5 minutes’ preparation time may be given only if the
GD is a case-study discussion, and has a long case statement.
• At the end of the preparation time, the panel signals the group
to commence the discussion, and from then on plays the role
of a non-participating observer.
4. • Basically, The GD ends in either of the two ways: first, the
panel may abruptly stop the GD and announce the end of the
process.
• Second, they may ask a participant (or more than one
participant) to summarise the GD.
• If you are asked to summarise, do remember what summary
means, your summary cannot have anything in it that was not
discussed during the GD.
• The summary must be an objective presentation of the
important points brought up during the discussion, and the
conclusion of the discussion.

• A pleasing personality makes a favorable impression giving
one an edge over the others.
• Personality includes not only one’s external appearance but
also the traits one possesses.
• Thus, during group discussions the dressing style, speaking
style, attitude towards others, presentation style, and so on,
are evaluated.
• During the twenty-five-thirty minutes one has, one needs to
create a favorable impression on the evaluators.

6. 2. Dressing Style
• Don’t wear flashy clothes while going for a group discussion or
interview.
• Candidates should also avoid cakey makeup or flaunt heavy
jewellery.
• The clattering sounds of your wearing (jewellery) sometimes
act as a disturbing element in formal discussions.
• Be in professional attire and avoid loud (dark) colors.

7. 3. Fish Market
• During the Group Discussion there are many instances where
you will find every one is saying something and no one is
heard.
• It is better to be quiet for a while and then after gathering your
thoughts, raise your voice initially and make your point.
• But being aggressive, shouting and not allowing others in the
group to speak, is not appreciated.

8. 4. Convincing Power
• The ability to convince others by means of your speech is a
great skill that is useful for any company.
• The candidate should be able to impact the other candidates
through his thought process and indeed one must learn this
skill.
• If you are good at convincing others, one half of your work is
done.
• Failure to convince is a failure to communicate effectively.

9. 5. Interpersonal skills
• It is a skill that helps to convert a normal conversation into an
impactful conversation.
• When we say that ‘you should sound confident’, it not only
involves the way you speak but your overall appearance as a
whole.
• The soft skills required include using voice modulation,
pronunciation and tone in an appropriate manner.
• One can take proper training in soft skills or imbibe some tips
of presenting oneself in the corporate world.

10. 6. Body language
• The candidate must maintain a consistent eye contact with
the entire group as he or she speaks, and the listeners must
reciprocate.
• Hand movements are to your speech what punctuation is to
your writing.
• If used wisely they beautifully enhance the effect of your
words; if used unwisely they attract unnecessary attention
and distract the listener from your words.
• Do not engage your hands with something pointless such as
playing with the pen, or tapping on the desk, or running
through your hair.

11. 7. Content
• What you say during the discussion is looked into from two
perspectives, relevance and comprehensiveness.
• It is possible that a participant has talked a great deal in a GD,
but he or she may have deviated from the topic significantly, in
which case the content is deemed largely irrelevant without the
possibility of further evaluation.
• If the content has been relevant to the topic, the panel
examines whether your treatment of the topic is superficial or
in-depth, distinction we shall discuss in detail in the next few
posts.

12. 8. Communication Skills
• You may have good and rich content with lot of ideas but if you are
not able to communicate well your thoughts and opinions, all is
useless.
• Be well versed in your communication skills.
• You should have a good vocabulary and a decent command over
English.
• Much before your actual group discussion, rehearse well. Not only
will this increase your knowledge, you will be a better speaker by
the time it is time for your GD.
• In case you are not sure about something, you can use phrases such
as: “I think” or “Probably/Approximately” or “If I remember
correctly”.

13. 9. Clarity of Points
• Without stating your views clearly, you can’t make an impact
even if you have more insightful knowledge about Group
Discussion topic.
• So, try to state your opinions clearly. But, don’t forget to use
simple and easily understandable words while speaking.
• And one more thing to remember is that don’t get aggressive
even if you’re disagreeing with someone.
• All these key things can help you to convince others on your
logical and right ideas on the topic given in GD.

• Having good subject knowledge and rich content is the first and
foremost GD tip to enter the Group Discussion Round.
• You should have subject knowledge and be well aware of the latest
happenings around you, not just in India but around the world as
well.
• If you are a good reader and read on variety of topics, it will help you
in group discussion round.
• Reading not only adds to your knowledge database, but enhances
your vocabulary skills as well.
• Always choose the magazines, journals, newspapers, and watch
current affairs programmes that are information rich.

15. 11. Initiator
• Introduce yourself and your team members and then start with the
topic
• Initiate the group discussion only when you are clear about the topic
because speaking without the subject knowledge gives bad
impression.
• Don’t wait for the others to start the discussion. Always volunteer
yourself and start the discussions in an extremely confident manner.
• Try to start the group discussion with your opinion if you have
complete knowledge of the subject, this will leave a good impression
in evaluator’s mind.
• Also give chance to let speak others and then respond with a polite,
intelligent comment. Don’t dominate.

• The participant’s ability to coordinate the team and work in
harmony with others is another ingredient for success in
group discussions.
• One must display the ability to take control of the discussion
without operating to be dominating.

• While discussion goes to a tense point, many candidates lost
patience and starts shouting out their points that messes up
their point in their voice.
• Be polite while discussing and give your point politely to
maintain the discussion and make your point understandable
to others.
• Speedy voice, crossing others comments or aggressive mood
makes your point useless and affectless.

• Use facts and illustrations to add value.
• However, be very sure of the validity of any statistic you quote.
• If you mention a wrong figure, someone in the group could
point out the mistake.
• A fact or a statistic can support a point you are making.

19. 15. Dominance (Interrupt)
• Always remember that it is a discussion and not a battle.
• In the heat of the moment never lose your control of speech
and decency.
• You are there to share your point of view and not to start an
argument. Respect others views and do not try to dominate
your views or point. Being patient and calm is the key.

• Always remember that your attitude will make a huge
difference in GD-PI.
• Stay positive and show your positive personality. Be kind
enough to give others a chance to speak, and when putting

• Remember you just have to put your points and not force other
person to accept your point and end up in argument.
• Listening not only helps to understand the topic from others

• If you have a valid point, but do not put it across confidently,
you might fail to earn a brownie point there.
• On the other hand, if you speak with confidence, you will be

• It’s very important to keep an eye contact while you are talking
as it reflects your confidence.
• Be real. Be yourself. In an attempt to be someone else, your

• Keep a track of topics that are mainly discussed in the GDs.
• Beware of what’s happening around you, what’s making news
and what’s the latest buzz.
• But the research on a particular topic should be more nuanced
rather than a generic one as you are supposed to debate on it.
• Your knowledge might be sourced from news headlines,
newspapers, internet, books, informative TV channels etc.

25. 21. Leadership
• Driving the discussion is a good idea, but make sure that you
appear as a leader and not a dominator.
• There could be a situation where you do not have enough
information on the given topic.
• Take charge and start your conversation forward.
• Once you take charge of the discussion, make sure that you
speak to the point without dragging the topic for the sake of
it.

• It can help you to impress the selectors who closely observe
every candidate participating in the GD.
29. 25. Summarization
• Just as initiating a group discussion helps to grab the attention
of the GD evaluators.
• Similarly, summarization too is an opportunity to turn heads of
the evaluators.
• The summary should be short and to the point and no new
points should be added for further discussion.
• Make sure that the summary is not single sided but an
amalgamation of the both sides of the discussion.
