Discipline And Punish Foucault
In Discipline and Punish, Michel Foucault is concerned with state systems of
punishment, providing a historical analysis of the modern penal system s creation
and continuity. He initially addresses the notion that prison based penal systems are
progressive and more humane than ever before, directly juxtaposing the experiences
those publicly gruesomely tortured and those privately incarcerated. However, he
acknowledges this dichotomy only to immediately flip it on its head, arguing that
public torture touches the criminal s body while incarceration aims to direct the
criminal s soul. In fact, he asserts that social progress is only a guise for the true,
sinister underpinnings of the modern prisonsystem. This, then, begs the question: how

As such, knowledge has influenced power relations between the inmate and the
prison. So, power has brought about a new knowledge, and knowledge has brought
about a new type of power. Foucault describes this as a nexus of power and
knowledge , in which the two terms reinforce one another in a circular process (p.
224). Power leads to knowledge and knowledge leads to power, and power
knowledge reproduces itself; therefore, power knowledge is an unending cyclical
force. While the power/knowledge nexus is observable in formalized institutions such
as prisons, Foucault generalizes it, explaining that it describes human power relations
in all settings. In order to do so, he draws upon Jeremy Bentham s panopticon, which
he characterizes as a distilled, ideal representation of power structures in society
(p. 205). The panopticon is, at its core, a ring shaped tower surrounded by cells
that windows on each side (the side of the cell toward the central tower and the side
of the cell toward the outside world). By the effect of backlighting, the panopticon
ensures that inmates cannot see a supervisor or guard in the central tower, but can
themselves be watched (p. 200). Because prisoners do not know if they are being
watched at any moment, visibility becomes a trap ; the fear of being observed
outweighs the motivation to do wrong (p. 200). In the panopticon, the observation of
inmates stimulates the
A Bog In Space Case Study
A Bogan in Space It s the year 1957, the 21st of October, and Australia launches its
space program. This exciting advance in technology reached the headlines in all
states; it was a big and a proud day for Australians. The news reached other
countries too, intrigued but sceptical of the program s future success. But for now,
the Australian government is confident in KX VB00 s development, boldly
claiming to be a spaceship ahead of its time. The ASA (Australian Space
Association) is eager to select two Australians to accompany the space ship s
captain in the first mission to outer space. Dingus awoke the same time as usual, not
too early, but not too late, a good sleep through to 8AM. He walked to the bathroom
and faced the mirror. Dingus is a short, baby faced bloke. Stubby facial hair on the
bottom of his chin, with an unkempt mullet reaching down to the back of his neck,
Dingus was truly the average Australian . Dingus quickly examined his face, brushed
his teeth and rinsed. It brimmed with morning air outside the Crufty family home.

Mortgage Refinancing Myths
Mortgage rates have been at an all time low for many years and while they ve gone
up a bit recently, they are still historically low. This has led to masses of homeowners
scrambling to refinance their mortgages. The reason so many homeowners have
waited to refinance their mortgage is because there are so many mortgagerefinancing
myths out there. That s why we re going to help you wade through the information
and dispel those mortgage refinancing myths, which will help you make an educated
decision about whether or not refinancing your home is the right decision for you and
your situation. Here are the top nine mortgage refinancing myths that keep so many
homeowners from taking advantage of these historically low interestrates.

Wouldn t It Be Better for Me to Invest My Money Rather Than Using It to Refinance
My Mortgage?
Investing is all about making money, but so is refinancing your mortgage in a
roundabout way. Smart investors don t put all their eggs in one basket. That s why
refinancing your mortgage is a good idea. If you refinance your mortgage, you will
have more money to invest. And if you are reinvesting for a shorter term, but a
higher monthly payment, then you will be able to pay off your mortgage sooner.
That means once your mortgage is paid off, you can take that money and invest the
entire amount. Additionally, paying on a mortgage doesn t come with any risk like
investing in the stock market does.
Another way to look at it is by comparing how much money you would make if you
had invested your money rather than using it to refinance your mortgage. Then
compare that to what you would save if you had used your money for mortgage
refinancing. Once you have those two numbers, you will also have a clear picture
as to which route is best for you. Of course this is not an exact science, because
there s no way you can predict how much you will make if you invest your money.
However, you can use your best guess based on the current market and hope for the

Feminism can be defined as a recognition and critique of male supremacy combined
with efforts to change it.

The goals of feminism are:
To demonstrate the importance of women
To reveal that historically women have been subordinate to men
To bring about gender equity.

Society s Influence
Fashion and the film industry are two huge influences on societal expectations that
women display their bodies sexually.
The sexual revolution liberated women from the
Victorian of modesty but also demanded a commitment to diet and beauty.
Doing Gender
Many feminist theorists believe that an individual is labeled at birth as a member of
a sex category, either male of female, and from that point on, is held to acting
accordingly.
Gender is not something that one has or something that one is; rather, it is something
that one does.
Gender as Social Structure
Risman does not accept the criteria of nature as a way to distinguish behavior
expectations.
She is especially upset by the field of sociobiology.
Gender as Social Structure
By assigning people to one or two categoriesmale or female society has created
difference between them.
Risman feels that genders strongest influence is found at the interactional level, and
therein lies the deepest liability for the continuation of inequality in American family
life
Relevancy
Feminism can be defined as a social movement and an ideology in support of the
idea that a larger share of scarce resources should be allocated to women. Feminist
believe that women should enjoy the same rights in society as men and that should
share equity in society s opportunities.
A Study On New Guinea
New Guinea is located in Indonesia, which is situated between Asia and Australia.
Papua is a country which occupies the eastern half of New Guinea and is not a very
well explored country, geographically, or culturally. A small tribe of about 3000
people occupies a remote and rural part of the southeastern side of the island and
they are known as the Korowaitribe. The Korowai people were discovered in Papua
New Guineain 1974. This tribe along with many other tribes in Papua New Guinea
experience little to no contact with other tribes or outsiders. The Korowai tribe is
unique because they are one of the few tribes on Earth that are still believed to
practice cannibalism. Even though they were only discovered in 1974, they are

The tall treehouses serve the purpose of protecting the children and women from

around the treehouses protect children. Yes, the Korowai people have practiced
cannibalism, according to anthropologists. Emily Payne, a publisher in the Daily
Mail, says anthropologists suspect that cannibalism is no longer practiced by the
Korowai clans, despite reports of it as recently as 2006 (Payne, 2015). A reporter
for the Smithsonian magazine named, Paul Raffaele, visited the Korowai tribe in
New Guinea to find the truth about their cannibalism. He reported that, today the
Korowai are among the very few tribes believed to eat human flesh. They live
about 100 miles inland from the Arafura Sea, which is where Michael Rockefeller,
a son of then New York governor Nelson Rockefeller, disappeared in 1961 while
collecting artifacts from another Papuan tribe; his body was never found. Most
Korowai still live with little knowledge of the world beyond their homelands and
frequently feud with one another. Some are said to kill and eat male witches they call
khakhua.

The Covered Wagon By Kenneth Holmes Essay
Throughout history, men and women experienced life changing situations that
impacted their lives in many different ways. The roles of both genders in society
show the narrow thread of their gender specific roles and social standards. The
customs of masculinity and femininity in the eastern part of the U.S, contributed
tremendously to the roles men and women played in the Overland Trial. However,
the development of the west showed the orthodox practices of American cultural
and the way in which many American identified themselves. The novel by Kenneth
Holmes called The covered wagon , illustrates the lives of the women who traveled
the west in covered wagons during the 19th century through their letters and diaries.
Women like Tamsen Donner as well as Virginia Reed, members of the donner
party. In addition, there are letters and diaries from a Mormon midwife who
delivered five babies on the trail and Rachel Fisher, who had to bury her husband
and daughter before getting to Oregon. Through the text of Holmes, current
historians are able to visualize the different places and details revolving around the
trail, crafting scenarios that are both devastating and heart warming to its audience.
Holmes focused primarily in the roles of women in the expansion to the west and
how the absence of women history shows the physical barrier crafted by genderroles.
During the 1840 s, the roles of men and women to their communities became defined
by the social and economic changes around

Environmental change is one the most genuine natural dangers confronting our
world. It is urgently critical for all organizations to reduce greenhouse gas outflows or
emissions from business operations so as to secure the earth against environmental
change and achieve sustainable growth, (Michael.B.2013, p.17) (Barry Dalal and S.

Samsung has been building up corporate level approaches or strategies to address the
immediate effect on environmental change. Through striving to decrease immediate
and aberrant outflows of greenhouse gases and avoid potential dangers via

As indicated by the verification, a few suppliers were found to ineffectively oversee
risky substances, for example, not naming unsafe substances or not double layering
containers in preparation for water spillage or leakage. Samsung electronics gave the
suppliers concerned training on unsafe substance management and asked for
improvement. Together with this, we likewise frequently dispatch its worksite

Triton s Role In The Novel Reef By Romesh Gunesekera
Introduction
Romesh Gunesekera; the author of the novel Reef (1994), begins the story with a
young boy by the name of Triton, entering Mr Salgado s household as a Kolla ,
meaning boy, and starting to become weary of himself and his own capabilities.
Throughout the novel, Triton faces certain hardships, but quickly learns to overcome
them as he begins to develop a sense of responsibility and independence within the
household. Mr Salgado becomes the centre of Triton s world and he is someone that
Triton looks up to and wants to become. However, everything changes when Miss
Nili becomes the central aspect of Mr Salgado s life and changes the relationships
within the household, allowing Triton to see things from a new perspective.
Throughout the novel we see how Triton plays the role of an Outsider as well as
Insider within the home and how he starts becoming very observant with regards to
Miss Nili. In this essay I will discuss how Triton s role in Mister Salgado s household
alters and becomes a turning point in the novel.

part in shaping Triton s life and helping him to become the person that he is now. At
a later stage in the novel, Triton even suggests that they should open up a restaurant
in London. This indicates that he does not want to let go of the relationship he has
with Mr Salgado. Therefore he would rather be a servant in Mr Salgado s household
all over again than be an empowered restaurant owner without Mr Salgado in his

2.5REVIEWS ON RFID IN WAREHOUSE
The RFID system mainly includes three parts: reader, antenna, and RFID tag, as
shown. Because of the uniqueness of the RFID tag, the reader can locate and track
the target once it is attached on an RFID tag. Passive tags are used to attach on the
target object because they are much cheaper, long lived, lightweight and have a
smaller foot print. The reader can communicated with host computer through RS232.
1.An RFID interrogator, or more often called an RFID reader, is a RF transmitting
and receiving device used to communicate with an RFID Tag. The device was
named an interrogator because it interrogates the tags. The term reader is a more
colloquial term, but is sometimes misleading in that many of these devices also have
the ability to encode, or write information to an RFID Tag. A reader basically acts as
an RF sensor because it can communicate with RFID tags that are within its range and
is designed to interface with an information process system.

Is There a Link between Violent Video Games and Violent...
A huge controversy in today s society is violent video games and their behavioral
effect on the children and adults who play them. Violent video games have been
blamed for bullying, school shootings, and even violence towards women. Many
have fought that violent video games desensitize players to real life violence, and
that they are teaching the youth that violence is an acceptable conflict solving
strategy. Other sources have stated otherwise. The 2004 Secret Service has stated
that only one eighth of attackers have exhibited interests in video games. Violent
Video games do not cause violent behavior or behavior problems because it has not
been proven that there is a link between violent video games and behavioral issues,
playing video games provide a safe outlet for aggressive and angry feelings and
reduces violence in young children, and violent juvenile crime has actually gone
down since the violent video game popularity has increased. A secure link between
violent video games and violent behaviors has not yet been proven. Studies have
shown numerous design flaws and have used unreliable sources such as noise blast
tests to test their theory. Aforementioned only one eighth of attackers have exhibited
interests in video games. A report has not yet been proven to link violent video
games with violent behaviors in school shootings but show that behavioral problems
come from violent movies and other resources. It has been shown that playing video

Back in Jesus time, Jews controlled the Gentiles; back in Moses time, Egyptians

Huffy The Vampire Figurative Language
Hush is an episode from Buffy the vampire slayer series it is forty four minutes and
twenty eight seconds long. In this episode the cast of Buffy the vampire slayer lose
their voices by monsters that need to steal human hearts without the victim
screaming. After the monsters steal the human voices they keep them in a small box
because human voices are their weaknesses, after the voices are sealed they start
attacking. The whole town starts going into panic because they lost their voice and
have to start expressing themselves nonverbally; this episode is a metaphoric
representation of how people have hard time expressing themselves verbally. This
episode is when the cast learns to overcome the difficulty of expressing their feelings,

In this episode two other fictional characters who had difficulty expressing
themselves like Xander did was Willow and Tara, these two girls had difficulty
expressing themselves when it came to confidence. Willow joins the Wicca group
thinking it is an actual group of witches wanting to help each other with powers so
she shares her thoughts in a joking suggestive manner, even though she means
what she says, yet, her thoughts get rejected and laughed at. Tara was also at the
same meeting for the Wicca group and it is evident that she struggles to speak her
opinions at the Wicca meeting especially when it seems like she wants to agree
with Willow who has already shared her opinions but when she does get the
opportunity to say her ideas she decides not to. Both girls find themselves in a bad
situation without their voices but Tara finds the confidence to show Willow that
she also shares the same ability of powers. They both were able to find their
confidence without their voices to show each other their powers, and because of this
when they regained their voices back they were able to talk to each other about their
witch ways. If they never found the confidence to show each other nonverbally they
probably would of never found out and /or talked to each
The Importance Of Student Athletes
Many critics stereotype athletes to be these young cocky jocks who only care about
how they look physically and the big game that night. But clearly in today s society
student athletes are making a strong effort to destroy that reputation. By athletes
getting involved in the school s campus life as well at the community, they are
showing that their lives aren t all about sports. NBC News writer, Lisa Heffernan,
shows just exactly how students are becoming involved in the school in her recent
article titled CollegeAthletes Find Success in College and the Workplace . She
writes Athletes were more likely than non athletes to say that they had a professor
who cared about them as a person and were more involved with campus clubs and
organizations. (Heffernan). It is very important for an athlete to become close
with a teacher or professor, because being an athlete means road games and
possibly missing class which is never easy to do. Another statistic Lisa Heffernan
points out, is that sports kept students in school and at one school for all four
years. Statistics show that Despite the time demands of playing for a team, athletes
were highly engaged in campus life. They were far less likely to transfer (39% vs.
22%)... (Heffernan). A school s mission should be to better their students and want
them to stay at school for all four years. One way this is possible is by motivating
students to participate in sports as well as clubs and organizations.

Shrek s Impact On Society And Symbolic Interactionism
As Shrek was judged, we are as humans judged today. This is true for anything we do.
Whether politics, television, or social media, it still defines how society and the
individual will behave. See through everything society does, no matter the period of
time, social interaction was navigated through words, and symbols. Which over time
developed an emotional meaning, which are projected thru action or behaviour today.
According to Dictionary.com, the definition of Symbolic Interactionism is a theory
that human interaction and communication is facilitated by words, gestures, and
other symbols that have acquired conventionalized meanings , with this definition
one can assume that the interactionist perspective is based around communication
that is made easier, by things like words, gestures and symbols, so that they can gain
the artistic meaning that will eventually make an effect ( symbolic interactionism ).
Those who study the interactionist perspective often take every day social
conversation and they use that to explain society, instead of taking the grand scheme
of everything in its entirety and using that to explain a large societal area in its
entirety. In the movie Shrek, the symbolism of each interaction has a deeper meaning
somewhere down the road. For instance, Shrek losing his swamp leads to him going
to Lord Farquaad. This in turn meeting Donkey and other fairy tale creatures, and
then going to save Fiona. This adventure, down the road of course, leads to him
getting a wife and friends.
When Shrek first meet the fairy tale creatures, he was about to start his quest to
talk to the great lord Farquaad. The fairy tale creatures, who were all imprisoned
and banished to Shrek s swamp by lord Farquaad from his kingdom, all came to
Shrek s swamp. This led to many friendships being formed, intricate and even
direct relationships were formed. The fairy tale creatures who came to Shrek s
swamp in the first place were ginger bread man named Gingy, the big bad wolf ,
named Wolfie, Pinocchio, 3 blind mice and 3 little pigs. While Shrek, Gingy and
Pinocchio are closer in relationship with a more intricate relationship, the rest of the
gang mentioned were not that close to Shrek. The symbols behinds all their

Sancho Panza as Governor in Don Quixote
While reading Don Quixote, I am sure that many people wonder whether or not
Sancho Panza will get his island to govern. The main reason that Sancho agrees to
be the squire of Don Quixote is because he is promised riches and an isle to govern.
As the book progresses it appears that Sancho s dream will not come true and he
will not become a governor. Many times in the book, Sancho asks his master if he
was really going to get his isle and Don Quixote always promises him that he will.
Eventually Sancho does become governor, although it is all because of a trick

Before Sancho sets out to his isle, Don Quixote gives him some advice. Don
Quixote tells Sancho many things and it appears that Sancho does a good job of
following his advice. Don Quixote says, Let the poor man s tears find more
compassion in you, but not more justice, than the pleadings of the rich (739). He is
basically saying not to favor the rich, but look at both sides evenly. Sancho does a
good job of following this advice when two old men come to him for help. One of
the men, who happened to have a cane, lent his friend ten crowns of gold some
time ago on condition that he would repay him on demand. When the man needed
his money paid back, he asked his friend several times for it but he denied
everything and said he was never given the ten crowns or if he was he repaid it
back. Sancho makes the man with the cane take an oath swearing that he paid him
back. The man was sneaky and gave his cane to the other man before taking the
oath and he swore he paid him back. Sancho realizes that something is up and he
orders the man with the cane to give the other man his cane and everything would
be settled. Everyone was very surprised by this but Sancho actually makes the wise
decision. Sancho orders the man to crack the cane open and when he does the ten
gold crowns are inside the cane. The audience is amazed by Sancho s decision. Don

Introduction
After several decades of development, computers have changed a lot. Nowadays, it
is quite hard to work without any assistance of computers in most areas, even some
traditional fields, such as agriculture, tourism, education etc. A computer is defined
as a general purpose device that can be programmed to carry out a set of arithmetic

which can solve some sort of problems through calculating data or taking statistics.

addition or subtraction operations in one second. It means ENIAC was better than
last generation of computer one thousand times, or manual calculation two hundred

Background
The idea of developing an electronic computer was generated during the World War
II. At that time, every country was busy with researching new strategic weapons
and equipment. Therefore, producing new types of airplanes and artilleries tended
to be more and more significant and necessary. For this reason, the Ordnance
Department of US Army set up a Ballistic Research Laboratory in Aberdeen,
Maryland. The US military required that the lab needed to provide six firing tables
of Army artillery units daily in order to identify the development of missile
technology. Although it was just six firing tables, they needed a staggering amount
of work. As a matter of fact, each table must calculate hundreds of shooting ballistic,
and each model of trajectory is a set of very complex nonlinear equations. These
equations are no way to find the exact solution, it can only be calculated

JFK Inaugural Address Analysis
The 1960s would become one of the most formative decades in American history, and
that trend was majorly influenced by one of the most influential presidents John F.
Kennedy. In his Inaugural Address on the cold January day in 1961, JFK united the
citizens of the United States under one common purpose, beginning his presidency
much like he would end it, with political strength and determination. Through her use
of repetition, anecdotes, and humor, Eleanor Clift reminds us that while many view it
as one of the most momentous events in history, to those closest to the inauguration,
it was the end of a long and tiring road. Clift first mentions the weather on the day of
the inauguration, and the winter motif is repeated throughout the rest of the article,
both literally and figuratively. On the day before the election, snow fell throughout

Kennedy s sister Jean commented on his terrific sense of humor (12) after he
wrote Don t deny you did it (12) on a picture that he gave to her. Even while
discussing how he became president, it was just jokes (12) , which echoes the
casual atmosphere of the inauguration. Humor is also used in a more ironic fashion.
Fred Dutton, a Kennedy special assistant, was good friends with a popular political
columnist. When she was sick and needed someone to ghostwrite her column,
Dutton agreed to help. And Fred uses this as a way to goad the president for not
being liberal enough... so the president walks in with the Washington Star one
afternoon, throws it on Dutton s desk, and says Can t you control that friend of
yours? (17) Through the use of humor, we are able to connect with JFK as a person,
not just a stately political figure. This association makes the rest of the article more
compelling because the audience is more invested in the inauguration and the stories

Online Brand Engagement Is Different From Offline...
Online brand engagement is qualitatively different from offline engagement as the
nature of the customer s interactions with a brand, company and other customers are
different on the internet (Chak 2003). Verhoef et al. (2010) support that customer
engagement consists of multiple online behaviors as blogging, customer ratings and e
word of mouth. Furthermore, they state that customer engagementis affected by firm
initiatives, customer characteristics, and environmental/contextual factors (Verhoef et
al., 2010).
According to Sashi (2012) customer engagement is a topic that has had an emerging
interest during the last years, based on the development of Internet and the new tools
that have emerged with it Web 2.0 (Sashi, 2012). Due to the increasingly networking
society customers can easily interact with other customers and this non transactional
customer behavior has become more important for companies when developing their
strategies (Verhoef et al., 2010). Hollebeek et al. (2014) and van Doorn et al. (2010)
mention how important the understanding of online brand engagement is in the social
media platforms as well as recognizing the opportunities for brand to extract value
from their followers. Van Doorn (2010) supports also, that it is important for
companies to fully understand the impact of customer brand engagement since the
digital world involves a broad audience with immediacy breadth.
To be more precise, social networks are communities where people are able to
Human Trafficking And Slavery
Human trafficking and slavery has been in existence across the globe for thousands
of years. Many forms of human trafficking and slavery is taking place in our world
today. It is horrible and no one should have to experience what those victims have
gone through. Human Trafficking and slavery should be stopped and laws should be
enforced.
Slavery was banned worldwide more than a century ago. Unfortunately, thousands
of people are still victims each year. It is estimated that there is approximately 40.3
million people subjected to slavery in the world currently. This includes 10 million
children, 24.9 million people forced to labor, 15.4 million forced to marriage lastly
4.8 million people forced in sexual exploation ( AntiSlavery ILO 2017). Slavery
implies ownership states Susa Thatun a child protection specialist at UNICEF
(Human Trafficking and Slavery. Robert Kinur. 2012). That statement is correct.
Slavery comes in all forms. For instance, a person can be forced to work, through
coercion or mental and physical threat. Someone may be dehumanized and treated as
a commodity or may be sold as property and some may have restrictions placed on
their freedom.
The most common form of Slavery is Debt Bondage. Debt Bondage is a form of
slavery that holds its victims in an endless cycle of debt and poverty. Extreme
poverty often forces parents to offer themselves or their own children as collateral
against a loan. Though, they are promised they will only work until their
Essay on History of Surfing
History of Surfing
Surfing, act of riding on waves as they break over a shallow shoreline surface, such
as a reef, sand bar, or some other submerged surface. People can surf with just their
body, this is called body surfing, or by lying, kneeling, or standing on a surfboard.
Equipment Used The Surfboard Modern surfboards are constructed of a plastic
foam core that can be shaped by hand or machine, then covered with a shell of
fiberglass and resin. Personal boards can vary in dimensions. The high performance
surfboards used by top professional competitors are about 6 to 6.5 feet long, and
18.5 inches wide, less than 2.5 inches thick, and weigh about 6 pounds. These boards
are called shortboards. Most longboards are 9 feet ... Show more content on

The Roots of Surfing Hawaii Although no one knows exactly where and when
stand up surfing began, there is no doubt that over the centuries the ancient sport
of he e nalu (wave sliding) was perfected by the Kings and Queens, and by men and
women in the Sandwich Isles, long before the 15th century. Of the Hawaiians who
surfed, it was the chiefly class who claimed the highest reputation for dedicated
proficiency with board and waves. They had their own prayers, chanters, board
shapers, wood and beaches where they alone could surf with others of similar rank.
No one dared to drop in on their wave, that meant death, or at least a near death
experience. Surfing achieved a special status and respectability in ancient Hawaii.
Renowned surfers were celebrated in song and dance and often enjoyed special
privileges in the royal circle. Which ever board they choose, being the long or short
board, the Chiefs took great pride in the skill, grace, speed and courage with which
they rode the Pacific s swells. However humble one s surfboard was, it was treated
with respect. Even before the board was shaped a proper surfbuilding ritual was
observed. It began with a tree. Only three types of trees were

I am Bohai, a 37 year old Buddhist from China. I strongly believe in the Buddhists
principles of karma and rebirth. Also, I am an imported laborer from China. In

Urbanization and Its Effects
Introduction Chapter No. 1
Urbanization brings about a social change. This is most prominent in the expansion
of entrepreneurship and industrialization. It is known that the progress of the landless
laborer and the absorption of wealth into a few hands promote urbanization. A lot of
people say that urbanization is the predictable outcome of economic growth, with the
increase of expert craftsmen, merchants, and proprietors. Urban growth or
urbanization brings an attraction for the people residing in rural areas. They get
attracted by the luxuries, comforts and opportunities which people of cities are

The film The Agony and the Ecstasy, 1965, is the epic portrayal of Michelangelo
and Pope Julius II based on the historical novel of the same name, by Irving Stone,
published in 1961. Their working relationship is documented as the struggle between
two powerful and egocentric men. While one is the leader of the Christian world, the
other means to change the world through his art. The paradox is that the Pope
jealously believes Michelangeloto be the man that can capture the nature of God
more successfully and translate that to his followers. The film follows their warring

as notes the inspiration that Michelangelo gets from God for his work on this... Show

The viewer watches the developing relationship between Michelangelo and Pope
Julius II, but their exchanges become repetitive. Literary license has always
allowed history to be changed for the sake of plot, including the order that
Michelangelo paints the ceiling as well as the age of Pope Julius II at the time of
Michelangelo s commission. Additionally, the film is unable to properly convey
the passage of time. While the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel was painted from 1508
1512, dates are hardly mentioned in the film and the viewer is left unaware of the
length of time that Michelangelo is at work except through the graying of his hair.
Towards the end of the film, Pope Julius II tells Michelangelo that he wishes he
could have been an artist, that Michelangelo is able to inspire faith in others in a
way that even the Pope cannot. The Agony and the Ecstasy portrays Michelangelo
as a divine messenger a prophet, carrying the message and images of God to the
masses. Even Michelangelo s inspiration for his paintings comes from God. The full
somatic experience of the ceiling compels the participation of the whole body in the
complex action of the ceiling and, therefore, transforms the soul. Certainly,
Michelangelo s work is otherworldly in its beauty and magnificence, but must the
viewer s experience be restricted through a Judeo Christian

Analysis Of Spirited Away By Hayao Miyazaki
When do we truly grow up? In most modern day societies, there is a legal age
where young people legally become adults, in this country it is once the clock
strikes 12 on the 18th birthday. In popular science, becoming mature means your
prefrontal cortex has finally fully developed around 24 or 25 years of age for
important decision making moments. Others perceive being all grown up when they
move out and are no longer dependent on their parents any longer. In, Hayao
Miyazakis most acclaimed animation film Spirited Away, Miyazaki s shares his
perception on what it means to become mature through an adventurous story of a 10
year old girl named Chihiro. Based on Chihiro s experiences Mr. Miyazaki portrays

our guiding light of virtue.
Spirited Away is a film that is chock full life lessons. It is very dense in symbolism
and filled with symbolic moral messages; no scene or word spoken is wasted. But
one very prominent theme that Miyazaki wants to explain to his young audience is
the dangers of greediness and the freedom that could be found in selflessness.
Both humans and spirits all have qualities of covetousness in Spirited Away. In the
beginning of the film, Chihiro s parents voraciousness allows disregard respect and

The Great Gatsby American Dream Failure Essay
The Great Gatsby is a 1925 novel that was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The
American Dream is the main theme of this novel; this is what Gatsby s life
depends on. The underlying cause for everything that happens in the novel is an
idea, an idea towards which everyone strives and dreams of. This unattainable,
destructive, and hindrance dream, as Fitzgerald calls it, is the American Dream.
What exactly is The American Dream some might ask? Well this dream could
change from person to person, but through Fitzgerald s character we see that is of
wealth, success, and generally a high position in society. Fitzgerald shows us as the
reader, that this dream is unattainable by the way that Gatsby s dream dies due to

Fitzgerald makes a big point that the American Dream is nothing, but an obstacle
in people s future. The American Dream is like the green light; when people want
it they stay focused on that one thing, and will do anything to have it. Often times
though people lose sight of reality and forget about others around them or just lose
feeling all together. When you have lost the sight of reality there is no future that
is ahead of you so there really is no place to go. The American Dream is an imaginary
dream that prevents people from living there life the way they should and having a
future. Once that dream is gone or the green light fades that person has nothing to
live for, just like Gatsby. Gatsby s life was over as soon as Daisy left; he had nothing
to look forward to or even live for. His life revolved around the American Dream. He
was always living in the yesterday and no the today as Fitzgerald said So we beat on,

dies, never grow old, but the crowd often forgets. now the telephone doesnВЎВ¦t ring,
the young girls are gone, the party is over.ВЎВЁ These simple and light words are
the truest portrayal of the reality. The tone is also reflective because the poem leaves
people the space of reflection. The brilliance of an athleteВЎВ¦s victory is relatively
short, but the achievement (works of literature) of a great poet is everlasting.
Both of the poems deal with the same subject ВЎV poet. However, they have quiet
different themes. Both of the poets use figurative language to portray vivid images
I Am Proud At The United States Essay
When I came to the United States three years ago, I didn t know how to speak
English at all. I started learning this new language after only speaking Spanish for 16
years; it was certainly an intimidating and daunting challenge. I thought it was going
to be impossible for me to learn English in time to attend a respectable university,
since my surrounding peers were constantly discouraging me. Through hard work and
determination, I managed to learn how to fluently read and write English like a
native speaker in just a year and a half. I am blessed enough to say that I now attend
one of the most prestigious universities in the United States. Initially, I was ignorant
to the potential that laid dormant within me. Now, I understand that we, as people,
limit ourselves by paying attention to limitations rather than our ability to permeate
and conquer them. Focusing on our limits hinders our progression and prevents us
from achieving our full potential. Society inculcates us with the idea that we are born
with a predetermined future, to which some of us who lack critical thinking skills
become robotically attached. We are raised with prearranged boundaries,
consequently, keeping our minds away from revolutionary ways of thinking. Instead
of being encouraged to think outside of the box, we are conditioned to remain inside
that box. This is a violence that we ourselves perpetuate; we hurt ourselves by
underestimating our ability to transcend beyond these artificial boundaries
Pros And Cons Of Airlift Rescue
A patient may be more readily harmed during an airlift rescue than during an on the
ground rescue. There are many additional challenges and other factors personnel
involved in an air rescue must account for compared to personnel in a ground rescue
to ensure the safety of the survivor.
A panicking patient is a more common occurrence during an airlift rescue, which can
cause inadvertent harm to both the victim and the rescuer. As previously
mentioned, a swimmer often has to break away from a panicking survivor ( USCG
RS Manual ). This, as well as panic in general, can lead to worsening of a patient s
injuries. Panic can lead to a person s judgement becoming clouded by fear, which can
get him or her and the rescuer(s) into more danger. It can ... Show more content on

They can be a hazard when entering because of their proximity to the cabin door.
They are also dangerous because they can still become angled towards rescuers
during a hover. This means that if a rescue personnel is entering the cabin, they can
hit the rotor and suffer severe injuries. The downwash from the spinning rotors can
also make entry into the cabin difficult. (Fact...structure of a helicopter; might find a
case of injury due to the rotors) The extreme environment in which rescues of this
nature take place also contribute to a patient s difficulty in surviving. Patients are
typically critically injured, and in need of a speedy rescue. For instance,
hypothermia can set in very quickly in cold water. This condition causes a patient s
mobility to become limited due to a dropping core temperature. It means the survivor
is often unable to help and that means the rescue becomes more challenging for the
rescue swimmer. (USCG RS Manual; knowledge of

Serena Williams 10 second tirade in the 2009 U.S. Open tennis tournament may
have cost her the semi final match, but what is the lasting impression on her legacy
(Ford 1)? Sometimes during a sporting event, athletes let their emotions get the best
of them. Their attitude is like a ticking time bomb, waiting to be set off by a bad
call from the line judge, a good shot by the opponent, or a simple mistake made by
the player. Many people believe athletes should be able to control their emotions and
always exhibit great sportsmanship. However, the media and most spectators have
never been in the same high pressure situations as these athletes, and they should not
judge without personal experience.
Many people question the character of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Consider figure skating s Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan. In 1994, the assault
of Nacy Kerrigan by a hired assailant, supposedly hired by Harding, made the
headlines and peaked the ratings of figure skating (Mass Moments 1). Publicity is
publicity, whether it is positive or negative (Bondy 1). Serena was quoted in her
apology as saying, The whole point of leaning from your mistakes is not to do the
same thing. She pledged that she would not allow herself to lose control again (Ford
1). Many will argue that Serena s raging personality and internal fire make her one of
the best female tennis players of all time (Bondy 2). Long time tennis coach, Nick
Bolletteri, called what Serena did not excusable, but certainly forgivable (2).
Obviously, what she did was unacceptable, but she should be forgiven by society as a
whole.
Another debatable topic on Williams boorish act is how it fits in with the role of
her gender. The foolish foot fault call can be compared to an illegal defense
violation made in the final seconds of a tight NBA Finals game. Many analysts say
that her reaction to the horrendous call was similar to the reaction of a man. Serena
s poor sportsmanship is proof that women can act as irrationally as me, but should
women be punished more harshly than men (Bondy 1)? Serena was fined $82,500
which is nearly double the previous highest fine at $48,000 to Jeff Tarango in the
1990 s when he stormed off the
Symbols Of Power In Lord Of The Flies
Symbols of Power in Lord of The Flies
Symbols have been used to express power throughout history. Judges have gavels.
Police officers wear badges. Kings wear crowns. Symbols are used to categorize
people into different social classes or groups. In Lord of the Flies, by William
Golding, those in leadership use tangible objects as symbols in an attempt to gain
control over the group.
There are two main symbols of power in the novel the conch shell and the ????
PIGGY s GLASSES? BEAST?
CONCH
At the beginning of the novel, one symbol of power is the conch shell. Piggy finds
the shell and realizes it can be used as a horn to call the boys together. We can use
this to call the others. Have a meeting. They ll come when they hear us. Later, he
suggests that whoever holds the conch shell in their meetings has permission to
speak, and everyone accepts that the shell is a symbol of authority. Ralph uses the
conch as a symbol of dominance. He always speaks using the conch in meetings: I
ll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he is speaking
(39). The boys gain power through holding the conch shell it represents law and
order. Golding writes that, Most obscurely, yet most powerfully, there was the
conch. Toward the end of the novel, Jack no longer recognizes the conch shell as a
symbol of power and authority. Jack declares that the conch is meaningless as a
symbol of power, and its decline in importance parallels the decline of civilization on

Persuasive Diary Entry
October 28, 2015: Isn t it funny how some things you will always remember and
some things you still don t quite fully recall. And some things are a mix of both. It
is those things, the ones that are a mix of both, that are the big ones the ones that
are the most important. Take my situation. Oh man, I hate life here. The worst part
is that I don t even deserve it. I am innocent, I don t care what the judge and
everybody else thinks! I am innocent! My teacher used to tell us that we are to
never, ever say the word hate, and if we ever did, we were to stay in at break and

Mrs. Halbert, but I hate that judge. He put me here. He is the reason I m in juvie.

in the mood. That was going on for the entire first week and guards started to
notice. I tried not to show it, but I was mad! I wasn t mad at anything in particular,
just the situation, so I kept ignoring the world. Finally, the guard said that I needed
to express my feelings, so he gave me this diary. That felt better. Next time, I will
explain it all. November 2, 2015: My name is Samantha McWilliams and I am

Aspects Of A Negro Life Essay
Aspects Of A Negro Life
Through his political activism and his artwork, Douglas dramatically changed the
way other artists viewed African Americans. Politically, he helped found and served
as president for the activist organization that drastically assisted with employing
thousands of artists.
he 1920s and 1930s brought drastic changes to the lives of many African Americans.
Geographically, they migrated toward the urban, industrialized North, not only to
escape racial prejudices and economic hardships, but also to attain higher social and
economic status. This Great Migration transformed the streets of Harlem, New York,
and gave rise to cultural changes of the New Negro movement. As this movement
gradually gained popularity, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Through his political activism and artwork, Douglas was able to reveal the ideas and
values exemplified during the Harlem Renaissance, despite significant criticism of his
style.
With this rebirth of traditional African culture, the number of African American
artists rapidly increased. It became difficult for these artists to gain employment,
even with the assistance of government work relief programs, such as the Works
Progress Administration (WPA). Set up by President Roosevelt as part of his New
Deal program, the WPA offered jobs to thousands of unemployed artists, in an
attempt to boost the nation s morale, as well as stimulate the depressed economy.
Despite its good intentions, the government program was unable to pay decent
wages and failed to provide employment for nearly five million artists (American). In
response to this failure, the Harlem Artist Guild, founded in 1928, aggressively
began to work alongside the WPA to ensure the success of African American artists.
Led by its first president, Aaron Douglas, the activist organization played an
influential role in helping artists attain the recognition necessary to qualify them for
the WPA work projects (Bearden 131). With the assistance of Douglas, the Harlem
Artist Guild, and the WPA, millions of African American artists succeeded in gaining
employment despite the hard times of the 1930s (Artnoir s).
In his own works, Aaron Douglas used a strong,
The Bombing Of The United States
Throughout the 1990 s terrorism became more and more widely used as a means for
achieving political ends. By the 2000 s, bin Laden had directed various attacks
against the U.S. through the al Qaeda terror network, including the 1993 World Trade
Center bombing and the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings in Africa (Mulhausen). On
September 11th, 2001 things would change, Bin Laden would strike on United States
soil. Nineteen terrorists hijacked four separate planes and crashed them into World
Trade Center one and two and into the Pentagon while a fourth plane crashed in a
field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. These attacks left roughly 3000 people dead.
Americans immediate response was to invade Afghanistan but the attack had changed
the nature of American foreign policy. Eighteen months after the attacks, President
Bush and the United States invaded Iraq. And since that day, the United States has
been involved in rebuilding both nations. A large part of the reasoning given for the
invasion of Iraq was the threat that Saddam Hussein posed in terms of his ability to
acquire nuclear and/or chemical weapons. As you said in discussion, the threat of a
terrorist organization acquiring nuclear capabilities is one of the things that make
terrorismso scary. (Beaulieu)
According to your Chapter 28 PowerPoint, since 2000, very few Americans have
been killed by terrorist, even counting 9/11 U.S. terrorism deaths are just over 3400
(Beaulieu). Personally, I think terrorism is so scary because
Dynamic Characters In The Scarlet Ibis
Just like real people characters in books have many different traits, and they can
affect the plot of the story in many different ways. In the story The Scarlet Ibis by
James Hurst, tThe narrator has a little brother who is ill, so the older brother has to
teach him basic skills such as walking. The narrator is a round dynamic characterwho
possesses many traits. Throughout the story the narrator reveals theme and
contributes a major role in revealing the theme. The narrator has many
characteristics. One of the traits the narrator possesses is he gets frustrated with his
brother. Before the narrator s brother can walk he has to bring him places, and he
describes his brother as a burden. He was a burden in many ways (417). By calling
his brother a burden it shows he is frustrated with his brother, and his brothers
disabilities, which left a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The theme is that being proud can lead to negative consequences. I did not know
then that pride is a wonderful, terrible thing, a seed that bears two vines, life and
death (419). The narrator teaches his brother how to walk and run out of his own
pride, which ultimately leads to his brother s death when his brother can no longer
keep up with narrator. Another element in this story is symbolism. The scarlet ibis
represents Doodle the. Both the scarlet ibis and Doodle are their neck position
when they died, red, and don t belong. The scarlet ibis and doodle are both red. He
had been bleeding from his mouth, and his neck and front of her shirt were stained
a brilliant red. (426). Doodle was red red after he died and the scarlet ibis is
naturally colored red. Those are just two of the many literary elements in the story.
Without the narrator the symbol of the ibis might not have shown because the
narrator is the one who taught Doodle how to walk, and the narrator left him in the
storm witch the doodle death witch revealed two out of three of the similarities
between Doodle and the

  • 2. Discipline And Punish Foucault In Discipline and Punish, Michel Foucault is concerned with state systems of punishment, providing a historical analysis of the modern penal system s creation and continuity. He initially addresses the notion that prison based penal systems are progressive and more humane than ever before, directly juxtaposing the experiences those publicly gruesomely tortured and those privately incarcerated. However, he acknowledges this dichotomy only to immediately flip it on its head, arguing that public torture touches the criminal s body while incarceration aims to direct the criminal s soul. In fact, he asserts that social progress is only a guise for the true, sinister underpinnings of the modern prisonsystem. This, then, begs the question: how ... So, power has brought about a new knowledge, and knowledge has brought about a new type of power. Foucault describes this as a nexus of power and knowledge , in which the two terms reinforce one another in a circular process (p. 224). Power leads to knowledge and knowledge leads to power, and power knowledge reproduces itself; therefore, power knowledge is an unending cyclical force. While the power/knowledge nexus is observable in formalized institutions such as prisons, Foucault generalizes it, explaining that it describes human power relations in all settings. In order to do so, he draws upon Jeremy Bentham s panopticon, which he characterizes as a distilled, ideal representation of power structures in society (p. 205). The panopticon is, at its core, a ring shaped tower surrounded by cells that windows on each side (the side of the cell toward the central tower and the side of the cell toward the outside world). By the effect of backlighting, the panopticon ensures that inmates cannot see a supervisor or guard in the central tower, but can themselves be watched (p. 200). Because prisoners do not know if they are being watched at any moment, visibility becomes a trap ; the fear of being observed outweighs the motivation to do wrong (p. 200). In the panopticon, the observation of inmates stimulates the

This exciting advance in technology reached the headlines in all states; it was a big and a proud day for Australians. The news reached other countries too, intrigued but sceptical of the program s future success. But for now, the Australian government is confident in KX VB00 s development, boldly claiming to be a spaceship ahead of its time. The ASA (Australian Space Association) is eager to select two Australians to accompany the space ship s captain in the first mission to outer space. Dingus awoke the same time as usual, not too early, but not too late, a good sleep through to 8AM. He walked to the bathroom and faced the mirror. Dingus is a short, baby faced bloke. Stubby facial hair on the bottom of his chin, with an unkempt mullet reaching down to the back of his neck, Dingus was truly the average Australian . Dingus quickly examined his face, brushed his teeth and rinsed. It brimmed with morning air outside the Crufty family home. Wouldn t It Be Better for Me to Invest My Money Rather Than Using It to Refinance My Mortgage? Investing is all about making money, but so is refinancing your mortgage in a roundabout way. Smart investors don t put all their eggs in one basket. That s why refinancing your mortgage is a good idea. If you refinance your mortgage, you will have more money to invest. And if you are reinvesting for a shorter term, but a higher monthly payment, then you will be able to pay off your mortgage sooner. That means once your mortgage is paid off, you can take that money and invest the entire amount. Additionally, paying on a mortgage doesn t come with any risk like investing in the stock market does. Another way to look at it is by comparing how much money you would make if you had invested your money rather than using it to refinance your mortgage. Then compare that to what you would save if you had used your money for mortgage refinancing. Once you have those two numbers, you will also have a clear picture as to which route is best for you. Of course this is not an exact science, because there s no way you can predict how much you will make if you invest your money. However, you can use your best guess based on the current market and hope for the

  • 8. The Covered Wagon By Kenneth Holmes Essay Throughout history, men and women experienced life changing situations that impacted their lives in many different ways. The roles of both genders in society show the narrow thread of their gender specific roles and social standards. The customs of masculinity and femininity in the eastern part of the U.S, contributed tremendously to the roles men and women played in the Overland Trial. However, the development of the west showed the orthodox practices of American cultural and the way in which many American identified themselves. The novel by Kenneth Holmes called The covered wagon , illustrates the lives of the women who traveled the west in covered wagons during the 19th century through their letters and diaries. Women like Tamsen Donner as well as Virginia Reed, members of the donner party. In addition, there are letters and diaries from a Mormon midwife who delivered five babies on the trail and Rachel Fisher, who had to bury her husband and daughter before getting to Oregon. Through the text of Holmes, current historians are able to visualize the different places and details revolving around the trail, crafting scenarios that are both devastating and heart warming to its audience. Holmes focused primarily in the roles of women in the expansion to the west and how the absence of women history shows the physical barrier crafted by genderroles. During the 1840 s, the roles of men and women to their communities became defined by the social and economic changes around

Violent video games have been blamed for bullying, school shootings, and even violence towards women. Many have fought that violent video games desensitize players to real life violence, and that they are teaching the youth that violence is an acceptable conflict solving strategy. Other sources have stated otherwise. The 2004 Secret Service has stated that only one eighth of attackers have exhibited interests in video games. Violent Video games do not cause violent behavior or behavior problems because it has not been proven that there is a link between violent video games and behavioral issues, playing video games provide a safe outlet for aggressive and angry feelings and reduces violence in young children, and violent juvenile crime has actually gone down since the violent video game popularity has increased. For the past 30 years that I have been on this earth, I have not seen a movie where the character being a woman of color played a part that where she is timid or light hearted. The argument that I have came across in my research that I do not believe has been thoroughly investigated is the need to demean or shed a harsh tone on women of color in film. But clearly in today s society student athletes are making a strong effort to destroy that reputation. By athletes getting involved in the school s campus life as well at the community, they are showing that their lives aren t all about sports. NBC News writer, Lisa Heffernan, shows just exactly how students are becoming involved in the school in her recent article titled CollegeAthletes Find Success in College and the Workplace . She writes Athletes were more likely than non athletes to say that they had a professor who cared about them as a person and were more involved with campus clubs and organizations. (Heffernan). It is very important for an athlete to become close with a teacher or professor, because being an athlete means road games and possibly missing class which is never easy to do. Another statistic Lisa Heffernan points out, is that sports kept students in school and at one school for all four years. Statistics show that Despite the time demands of playing for a team, athletes were highly engaged in campus life. They were far less likely to transfer (39% vs. 22%)... (Heffernan). A school s mission should be to better their students and want them to stay at school for all four years. One way this is possible is by motivating students to participate in sports as well as clubs and organizations. One of the biggest

Whether politics, television, or social media, it still defines how society and the individual will behave. See through everything society does, no matter the period of time, social interaction was navigated through words, and symbols. Which over time developed an emotional meaning, which are projected thru action or behaviour today. According to Dictionary.com, the definition of Symbolic Interactionism is a theory that human interaction and communication is facilitated by words, gestures, and other symbols that have acquired conventionalized meanings , with this definition one can assume that the interactionist perspective is based around communication that is made easier, by things like words, gestures and symbols, so that they can gain the artistic meaning that will eventually make an effect ( symbolic interactionism ). Those who study the interactionist perspective often take every day social conversation and they use that to explain society, instead of taking the grand scheme of everything in its entirety and using that to explain a large societal area in its entirety. In the movie Shrek, the symbolism of each interaction has a deeper meaning somewhere down the road. For instance, Shrek losing his swamp leads to him going to Lord Farquaad. This in turn meeting Donkey and other fairy tale creatures, and then going to save Fiona. This adventure, down the road of course, leads to him getting a wife and friends. When Shrek first meet the fairy tale creatures, he was about to start his quest to talk to the great lord Farquaad. The fairy tale creatures, who were all imprisoned and banished to Shrek s swamp by lord Farquaad from his kingdom, all came to Shrek s swamp. This led to many friendships being formed, intricate and even direct relationships were formed. The fairy tale creatures who came to Shrek s swamp in the first place were ginger bread man named Gingy, the big bad wolf , named Wolfie, Pinocchio, 3 blind mice and 3 little pigs. While Shrek, Gingy and Pinocchio are closer in relationship with a more intricate relationship, the rest of the gang mentioned were not that close to Shrek. The symbols behinds all their

Therefore, producing new types of airplanes and artilleries tended to be more and more significant and necessary. For this reason, the Ordnance Department of US Army set up a Ballistic Research Laboratory in Aberdeen, Maryland. The US military required that the lab needed to provide six firing tables of Army artillery units daily in order to identify the development of missile technology. Although it was just six firing tables, they needed a staggering amount of work. As a matter of fact, each table must calculate hundreds of shooting ballistic, and each model of trajectory is a set of very complex nonlinear equations. According to Sashi (2012) customer engagement is a topic that has had an emerging interest during the last years, based on the development of Internet and the new tools that have emerged with it Web 2.0 (Sashi, 2012). Due to the increasingly networking society customers can easily interact with other customers and this non transactional customer behavior has become more important for companies when developing their strategies (Verhoef et al., 2010). Hollebeek et al. (2014) and van Doorn et al. Then, in the last stanza of the poem, the author uses repetition again and metaphor to depict how wonderful to be a poet. ВЎВ§you can keep your hustle going until the last minute of the last day. you can keep getting better instead of worse, you can still keep hitting them over the wall.ВЎВЁ The authorВЎВ¦s consummate writing skill enables him to convey his opinion clearly and vividly to the readers. In comparison with the first poem, the tone of this poem is light and amusing as well as reflective. By using terse yet light languages to describe the changes of the things around the athletes, the author delineates the cruel reality that the athletes have to face after their brilliant victory. ВЎВ§the crowd has other heroes. the crowd never dies, never grow old, but the crowd often forgets. now the telephone doesnВЎВ¦t ring, the young girls are gone, the party is over.ВЎВЁ These simple and light words are the truest portrayal of the reality. The tone is also reflective because the poem leaves people the space of reflection. The brilliance of an athleteВЎВ¦s victory is relatively short, but the achievement (works of literature) of a great poet is everlasting. Both of the poems deal with the same subject ВЎV poet. However, they have quiet different themes. Both of the poets use figurative language to portray vivid images
  • 39. I Am Proud At The United States Essay When I came to the United States three years ago, I didn t know how to speak English at all. I started learning this new language after only speaking Spanish for 16 years; it was certainly an intimidating and daunting challenge. I thought it was going to be impossible for me to learn English in time to attend a respectable university, since my surrounding peers were constantly discouraging me. Through hard work and determination, I managed to learn how to fluently read and write English like a native speaker in just a year and a half. I am blessed enough to say that I now attend one of the most prestigious universities in the United States. Initially, I was ignorant to the potential that laid dormant within me. Now, I understand that we, as people, limit ourselves by paying attention to limitations rather than our ability to permeate and conquer them. Focusing on our limits hinders our progression and prevents us from achieving our full potential. Society inculcates us with the idea that we are born with a predetermined future, to which some of us who lack critical thinking skills become robotically attached. We are raised with prearranged boundaries, consequently, keeping our minds away from revolutionary ways of thinking. Instead of being encouraged to think outside of the box, we are conditioned to remain inside that box. This is a violence that we ourselves perpetuate; we hurt ourselves by underestimating our ability to transcend beyond these artificial boundaries

There are many additional challenges and other factors personnel involved in an air rescue must account for compared to personnel in a ground rescue to ensure the safety of the survivor. A panicking patient is a more common occurrence during an airlift rescue, which can cause inadvertent harm to both the victim and the rescuer. As previously mentioned, a swimmer often has to break away from a panicking survivor ( USCG RS Manual ). This, as well as panic in general, can lead to worsening of a patient s injuries. Patients are typically critically injured, and in need of a speedy rescue. For instance, hypothermia can set in very quickly in cold water. This condition causes a patient s mobility to become limited due to a dropping core temperature. It means the survivor is often unable to help and that means the rescue becomes more challenging for the rescue swimmer. (USCG RS Manual; knowledge of

Not Excusable, But Certainly Forgivable Essay Serena Williams 10 second tirade in the 2009 U.S. Open tennis tournament may have cost her the semi final match, but what is the lasting impression on her legacy (Ford 1)? Sometimes during a sporting event, athletes let their emotions get the best of them. Their attitude is like a ticking time bomb, waiting to be set off by a bad call from the line judge, a good shot by the opponent, or a simple mistake made by the player. Many people believe athletes should be able to control their emotions and always exhibit great sportsmanship. However, the media and most spectators have never been in the same high pressure situations as these athletes, and they should not judge without personal experience. Many people question the character of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Consider figure skating s Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan. In 1994, the assault of Nacy Kerrigan by a hired assailant, supposedly hired by Harding, made the headlines and peaked the ratings of figure skating (Mass Moments 1). Publicity is publicity, whether it is positive or negative (Bondy 1). Serena was quoted in her apology as saying, The whole point of leaning from your mistakes is not to do the same thing. She pledged that she would not allow herself to lose control again (Ford 1). Many will argue that Serena s raging personality and internal fire make her one of the best female tennis players of all time (Bondy 2). Long time tennis coach, Nick Bolletteri, called what Serena did not excusable, but certainly forgivable (2). Obviously, what she did was unacceptable, but she should be forgiven by society as a whole. Another debatable topic on Williams boorish act is how it fits in with the role of her gender. The foolish foot fault call can be compared to an illegal defense violation made in the final seconds of a tight NBA Finals game. Many analysts say that her reaction to the horrendous call was similar to the reaction of a man. Serena s poor sportsmanship is proof that women can act as irrationally as me, but should women be punished more harshly than men (Bondy 1)? Serena was fined $82,500 which is nearly double the previous highest fine at $48,000 to Jeff Tarango in the 1990 s when he stormed off the

Kings wear crowns. Symbols are used to categorize people into different social classes or groups. In Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, those in leadership use tangible objects as symbols in an attempt to gain control over the group. There are two main symbols of power in the novel the conch shell and the ???? PIGGY s GLASSES? BEAST? CONCH At the beginning of the novel, one symbol of power is the conch shell. Piggy finds the shell and realizes it can be used as a horn to call the boys together. We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They ll come when they hear us. Later, he suggests that whoever holds the conch shell in their meetings has permission to speak, and everyone accepts that the shell is a symbol of authority. Ralph uses the conch as a symbol of dominance. He always speaks using the conch in meetings: I ll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he is speaking (39). The boys gain power through holding the conch shell it represents law and order. Golding writes that, Most obscurely, yet most powerfully, there was the conch. Toward the end of the novel, Jack no longer recognizes the conch shell as a symbol of power and authority. Jack declares that the conch is meaningless as a symbol of power, and its decline in importance parallels the decline of civilization on

Politically, he helped found and served as president for the activist organization that drastically assisted with employing thousands of artists. he 1920s and 1930s brought drastic changes to the lives of many African Americans. Geographically, they migrated toward the urban, industrialized North, not only to escape racial prejudices and economic hardships, but also to attain higher social and economic status. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through his political activism and artwork, Douglas was able to reveal the ideas and values exemplified during the Harlem Renaissance, despite significant criticism of his style. With this rebirth of traditional African culture, the number of African American artists rapidly increased. It became difficult for these artists to gain employment, even with the assistance of government work relief programs, such as the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Set up by President Roosevelt as part of his New Deal program, the WPA offered jobs to thousands of unemployed artists, in an attempt to boost the nation s morale, as well as stimulate the depressed economy. Despite its good intentions, the government program was unable to pay decent wages and failed to provide employment for nearly five million artists (American). In response to this failure, the Harlem Artist Guild, founded in 1928, aggressively began to work alongside the WPA to ensure the success of African American artists. Led by its first president, Aaron Douglas, the activist organization played an influential role in helping artists attain the recognition necessary to qualify them for the WPA work projects (Bearden 131). With the assistance of Douglas, the Harlem Artist Guild, and the WPA, millions of African American artists succeeded in gaining employment despite the hard times of the 1930s (Artnoir s). • 47. The Bombing Of The United States Throughout the 1990 s terrorism became more and more widely used as a means for achieving political ends. By the 2000 s, bin Laden had directed various attacks against the U.S. through the al Qaeda terror network, including the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings in Africa (Mulhausen). On September 11th, 2001 things would change, Bin Laden would strike on United States soil. Nineteen terrorists hijacked four separate planes and crashed them into World Trade Center one and two and into the Pentagon while a fourth plane crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. These attacks left roughly 3000 people dead. Americans immediate response was to invade Afghanistan but the attack had changed the nature of American foreign policy. Eighteen months after the attacks, President Bush and the United States invaded Iraq. And since that day, the United States has been involved in rebuilding both nations. A large part of the reasoning given for the invasion of Iraq was the threat that Saddam Hussein posed in terms of his ability to acquire nuclear and/or chemical weapons. As you said in discussion, the threat of a terrorist organization acquiring nuclear capabilities is one of the things that make terrorismso scary. (Beaulieu) According to your Chapter 28 PowerPoint, since 2000, very few Americans have been killed by terrorist, even counting 9/11 U.S. terrorism deaths are just over 3400 (Beaulieu).
