3. Petrarch and Machiavelli Essay
Thoughts on Ruling: Machiavelli VS. Petrarch In the fourteenth century, the
humanist philosopher Francesco Petrarch wrote a letter entitled How a Ruler Ought
to Govern His Sate. Nearly a century later, another philosopher by the name of
Niccolo Machiavelli wrote a book about governing, The Prince. The two documents
show many similarities in content and theme. While the two wrote in similar subject
matter, it is clear that these philosophers possess distinctly different viewpoints on
how a ruler should govern. In Petrarch s How a Ruler Ought to Govern His Sate and
Machiavelli s The Prince, both philosophers possess different opinions on how a ruler
ought to govern. In particular Machiavelli pays specific attention to the importance of

In The Prince, Machiavelli repeatedly brings up the theme of importance of
appearing like a virtuous ruler. In chapter XV Machiavelli discusses how it is
important to appear as a virtuous ruler, but to not actually possess these qualities. He
states, one is considered a giver, the other rapacious; one cruel, another merciful; one
treacherous, another faithful; one effeminate and cowardly, another bold and
courageous; one humane, another haughty; one lascivious, another chaste; one
trustworthy, another cunning; one harsh another lenient; one serious another
frivolous; one religious another unbelieving; and the like. And I know that
everyone will admit that it would be a very praiseworthy thing to find in a prince,
of the qualities mentioned above, those that are held to be good; but since it is
neither possible to have them nor observe them all completely, because human
nature does not permit it, a prince must be prudent enough to know how to escape
the bad reputation of those vices that would lose the state for him (The Portable
Machiavelli 127). In this chapter Machiavelli is suggesting that a good ruler can t be
virtuous at all times because it would not be in the best interest of the people.
Machiavelli received much criticism from this suggestion, but he saw nothing wrong
with it. To Machiavelli, the definition of virtue was anything that receives praise from

4. Market Wage Essay
Market analysts Thomas Piketty and Emmanuel Saez have built wage measurements
in view of IRS information that backpedal to 1913 to give a long haul point of view
on patterns in the centralization of wage inside the main 10 percent of the circulation.
Since they have no immediate information on non filers and on the grounds that in
any year just around 10 to 15 percent of potential assessment units needed to record a
pay government form before World War II, Piketty and Saez concentrate on the offer
of pay got at the highest point of the dispersion.

They likewise don t represent government money exchanges or for open and private
non money advantages, for example, government wellbeing and sustenance help
advantages and boss paid medical coverage benefits.
The offer of individual pay originating from people in general and private non
money benefits that are absent from the Piketty Saez salary measure has expanded
throughout the years. Subsequently, add up to salary as registered by Piketty and
Saez has represented a diminishing offer of individual pay in the national pay and
item accounts after some time. This could contort their appraisals of what offer of
the development of aggregate salary has come at the highest point of the circulation.
For instance, business supported medical coverage benefits are undoubtedly a
significantly littler part of pay for the main 1 percent than for by far most of center
pay charge units; excluding them could downplay wage development amidst the
conveyance in respect to development at the best.
Since every individual wellspring of promptly accessible information on pay
dispersion has distinctive points of interest and constraints, no single source
delineates the greater part of the significant patterns in disparity in the course of
recent decades or something like that. In a perfect world, we would take a gander at
an extensive measure of pay

SOPA, DMCA, and HIPAA
With the introduction of computers and the internet opens limitless possibilities for
the world to become so much more interconnected and interactive. However, that
same limitless potential is both a blessing and a curse. The open internet is a system
that allows for unlimited access to almost any sort of information. That same
openness makes security for one s self difficult and there isn t anyone who is
completely secure. The introduction of the internet for broad use and public
consumption also came with the federal government s attempts to prevent the theft of
personal information. In the late 1990s, President Bill Clinton signed into law two
provisions to protect copyright and affordability of healthcare: the Digital Millennium
Copyright Act (DMCA) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
In 2011, a bill was introduced into the United States House of Representatives called
the Stop Online Privacy Act (SOPA) to combat online copyright infringement and
online trafficking in counterfeit goods. Obviously the DMCA and SOPA have much
more in common as they deal with copyright infringement. As such, they also have a
profound impact on information security. HIPAA is important as well as it keeps
confidential information like medical records to only be accessed by patients and
medical professionals. All three of them touched on an important subject, information
security, that warrants the
6. Factors That Influenced The State Of The Criminal Justice...
Managerialism and populism are key concepts that have influenced many state
organised responses to crime. Populism, on one hand, is defined by Shils (1956,
p.100 1) as existing wherever there is an ideology of popular resentment against the
order imposed on society , so it is seen to establish policies that reflect the voices
and needs of the public. Whereas McLaughlin (2013) defines managerialist policies
as a set of governmental knowledges, techniques and practices which aim to fracture
and realign power relations within the core agencies of the criminal justicesystem
(2013, p.260). This is so the criminal justice system is run in a more cost effective,
efficient way (Pratt, 2007, p.133). McLaughlin discusses two waves of... Show more

Garland (2001) provides that as crime became more apparent, one of the main
problems arising was the difference in what the public expected from the criminal
justice system in terms of justice and their protection (Garland, 2001, p. 113). Roberts
et al (2003) cited in Pratt (2007, p.28) argues that imprisonment is the most important
and significant aspect of penal populism with one of its recurring themes relating to
accommodating both harsher and longer sentences of imprisonment (Pratt, 2007,
p.28). As we can see from this, penal populism has become dominant within policy
areas to ensure public safety.
There has been a decline in rehabilitative ideals of punishments following the
Criminal Justice Act 1991 (CJA), and instead, Garland (2001) suggests how the just
deserts philosophy has become, what he argues to be a generalised policy goal
(Garland, 2001, p.9). By this he means that instead of rehabilitating offenders, by
focusing on a more populist form of policy making, the punishments are deserved.
This is further supported by Cavadino and Dignan (2002) who discuss how the idea
of retributive punishments, particularly just deserts have been revived in some way
over the past few decades. Instead, shifting to more of a law and order ideology
discussed within the CJA 1991 whereby punishments such as incarceration are much
more appealing and effective than more romantic forms of punishment (Cavadino

male in the genus Australopithecines is 43 kg and for Paranthropusis 44.5 kg. The
average weight of a female in the genus Australopithecines is 29.5 kg and for
Paranthropus is 33 kg. The average maleheight for Australopithecines is 1.45 m and

Africa
Lions Lions are wild mammals classified under Felidae family of Panthera Genus
(like of the other big cats) and assigned a specific name Panthera leo. They are
found in the Sub Saharan Africa and parts of Eurasia. Lions are generalist carnivores
with mammals, particularly ungulates as their main meal. They are referred to as the
king of the jungle because of their appearance, raw strength and power, and partly
their unique social structure of a pride. An average lionhas a 10 to 14 years lifespan
but can live up to 20 years in monitored captivity.
Distribution of Lions
Africa
In Africa, lions are live in the Sub Saharan region except in the equatorial rain forest
and in the heavily populated regions along the southern coast of the western portion
of the continent. Lions are known to typically thrive in savanna grasslands with
scattered Acacia trees where they camouflage well with the surrounding. However,
there are unique desert adapted lions in the southwestern part of Africa which have
evolved to withstand the harsh environment of the Namib Desert in Namibia. Most of
Africa s wild lions live in Eastern African countries like Kenya and Tanzania as well
as the Southern African countries like South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and
Zambia.

Most lions now live in eastern and southern Africa, and their numbers are rapidly
decreasing. The number of mature lions in West Africa is estimated at 850 to 1,160.
Another surviving population is in northwestern Africa, with approximately 14 to 21
lions. Both the African and Eurasia lions are under conservation within national
parks and game reserves set up to preserve the dwindling species. However, some
lions in Africa occasionally find themselves roaming in residential areas. Diseases and
human interference have proven to be the major challenges in conservation
10. Gas Exchange Or External Respiration
Gas exchange or external respiration is where we get oxygen from the air into the
blood and remove waste carbon dioxide from the blood into the air. Gas exchange
happens in the lungs between the alveoli (air sacs) and a network of tiny blood
vessels called capillaries. The capillaries are located in the moist thin walls of the
alveoli. The alveoli give the lungs a really big surface area for diffusion to take
place. There are millions of alveoli in the lungs. When inhalation occurs oxygenis
taken in through the mouth and nose flowing along the trachea and bronchial tubes
to the alveoli of the lungs. The breathed in air, which is now rich with oxygen comes
into contact with the bloodin the capillary network surrounding the alveoli, which
11. Borders By Thomas King Analysis
In the short story Borders by Thomas King there is a predicament with First Nations
identity while attempting to cross Canadian and US borders. These problems can
relate with an article by Brian Kolva titled Lacrosse Players, Not Terrorists: The
Effects of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative on Native American International
Travel and Sovereignty . In this article there is the same identity predicaments
occurring as found in Borders. These two readings are similar when displaying the
issues First Nationspeople face when addressing who they are because of policies put
in place by governmentthat do not include everyone s personal identity. The
governments of the world need to be aware of these many different identities and
policies must change for the inclusion of all people. Firstly the most clear piece of
evidence supporting the topic is the overall denial of entry into the countries. In
Borders the Canadian and US borders will not let a mother and her son through
because she identifies as Blackfoot (King, pg 284 line 8). This denial factor can be
seen in LacrossePlayers, Not Terrorists also; the Iroquois Nationals team was
denied access into Britain due to their Haudenosaunee passports(Kolva, para 1).
The options given to these two different groups were extremely similar, in Borders
the mother and her son were asked to identify as Canadian or American to cross and
the lacrosse players were asked to use Canadian or American passports to gain access

12. Jefferson And Andrew Jackson
Both Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson believed that they positively influenced
the people of the United States. These two Presidents considered themselves as
helping the common interests of the people, yet had different and similar approaches
to running the government and conducting Presidential tasks. Thomas Jefferson,
elected in 1800, had different views on the National Government and its affairs
compared to Jackson (Davidson and Stoff 310). Jefferson believed that the states
should have more power than the Federal Government, essentially supporting a
limited central government (311). Also, in regards to foreign affairs and expansion,
Jefferson chose to handle them peacefully instead of forcefully (315 and 324). Within

In other words, Jackson believed that the Federal Government should have more
power over the state legislatures, in order to maintain a stable and effective U.S.
government for all to see. This difference is supported by Jackson s arguments
against nullification (365). Nullification is the action of a state to cancel any
objectionable federal law (364). The support against nullification means that Jackson
did not believe that the states should be able to object to any federal laws; assering
the Federal Government s dominance over the states. Within this argument, Jackson
issued a document known as the Proclamation to the People of South Carolina (365).
This proclamation stated that, even if the state of South Carolina supported
nullification and President Jackson did not, South Carolina could not threaten to
leave the Union. This was named treason in the document. It was released in
response to an attempt by South Carolina to nullify tariffs placed on textiles in 1828
(364). In a final display of Federal Government power, Jackson passed a law which
allowed members of the government to forcefully collect tariffs if necessary (365). In
this situation with South Carolina, it is clear that an irate President Jackson was keen
on showing the country the power of the American Federal Government. On the other
hand, President Jefferson fired government employees as part of his Revolution.

Amber, help! I jumped out of bed and ran down the hall, not aware of my

15. Training Methods For The Olympics
The Training Transition Although, there are many differences in the techniques and
training methods that were used to prepare for the Olympics, during the Ancient
Greek period and now, research has shown that there are still some similarities and
systems that are still practiced today. The first Olympic Games started in Olympia
around 776 B.C.E. but later the Games were discontinued by the emperor
Theodosius, in 393 A.D. The Olympics have quickly gain back popularity after
resuming in 1896 in Athens, Greece, and has been a very anticipated event occurring
every four years (Ancient Olympics: History). This has allowed athletes to have the
opportunity to look forward and prepare for one of the most important sport
competitions in history, as many others have done hundreds of years ago. When
getting ready for the Olympic Games, training methods such as, athletic, weight, and
mental training are used to prepare athletes for better performance, as they were in
ancient times. Athletes practice these training methods to help them achieve greater
ability when participating in their sporting events, in hoping to ultimately win a
medal. To begin with, the Olympics started with running races, called stadions,
being the first sport for athletes to participate in the ancient times. The runners had
to run the length of the stadium (192 m), which was referred to as 1 stade). There
were also 2 stade races, and for long distance it could be up to 24 stades (Ancient
Olympic Events). In

Perhaps the most famous of all his mind games was his Watch tapping technique. He

19. Gender Inequality In A Doll s House
Playwright Henrik Ibsen is often thought of as the founder of realist drama and
one of the plays that belong to Ibsen s realism period is A Doll s House, written in
year 1879. This play is not only remembered because of the impact it had on the
society in the Nineteenth century but also because of its artistic achievements. Isben
depicts a female protagonist in his play, who initiates a rebellious movement by
defying her husband and forsaking her duty as a wife and mother to seek out her
individuality. During the time when this play was written, the Nineteenth century, a
new literary style, Symbolism, was developed. It involves looking at insignificant
things with a new eye in order to discover inexplicit ideas and concepts. Throughout
the play, Ibsen uses distinctive objects and their relation with the characters to
externalize the presence of falsehood in the society. Using symbolism, he creates a
story in parallel, where unspoken matters such as the notion of male predominance
and the theme of lies and deception are brought to the surface. The cultural
implications and the norms of the society in the Nineteenth century are established in
Ibsen s work. Issues of gender inequality and the notion of feminism become
relatively perceivable in A Doll s House. During that era women had no rightful

Effectiveness of the United States and Canada s Polices Towards Refugees
Has United States or Canada been more effective with implementing and abiding by
refugee rules and laws? Before discussing and comparing which of these countries
had been more successful, the historical context of refugees needs to be explored.
Although refugees have existed throughout the course of history, the definitions of
what a refuge is had shifted and evolved over time. The League of Nations in the
1920s defined refugees by categories, specifically in relation to their country of
origin. Up until 1950s, the League of Nations, which later became the United Nations
, established and dismantled several international institutions devoted to refugees in
Europe. After World War II, creating and facilitating solutions for refugees were of
high importance internationally. This is evident in the first session of United Nations
General Assembly in 1946 when it adopted the principle that no refugee who had
expressed valid objections to returning to their countries [sic] of origin ... shall be
compelled to return. Additionally, the United Nations in 1947 established the
International Refugee Organization (IRO), a specialized temporary agency aimed
at handling the displacement of refugees after the conclusion World War II. A
refugee was by the IRO defined as a person who was a victim of state intolerance or
was a genuinely motivated political dissident. Since the IRO was established as a

empires rise and fall. Some empires have been more conventional to the Western
understanding, such as the Roman Empire where there was a central capital that had
direct control over other territories in which it conquered. Other empires consisted of
a more complex system, like the AztecEmpire which consisted of a capital,
Tenochtitlan, but had very loose control over its conquered territories. The Aztec

With the capital city of Tenochtitlan founded upon a small island that became one of
the biggest cities in the world of its time to the spread of the Aztec conquest
throughout Central America, the Aztecs questioned the conventional definition of
what makes up a city and an empire. New ideas of culture, social organization, and
military conquests developed because of the Aztec Empire. The Aztec Empire
however, eventually fell because of its flaws within the empire like the lack of fast
travel and the lack of loyalty among the commoners of the conquered city

Henry and Hillel Hassenfeld founded Hasbro in 1923, it started out selling textile
remnants and quickly moved to school supplies. Over the years it has evolved into
one of the largest and most successful toy companies in the world. Also, since

24. Triage Case Studies
My initial reaction after reading the case study was how impressed I was. Even
though the responders expressed their inexperience with handling a real life mass
casualty event, they were able to plan and conduct their triage smoothly. They were
able to quickly set up a designated area for the minimal and no injuries individuals to
stay while they assessed the more serious individuals. After reading the chapter, I
noticed some areas of improvement that could have occurred during the response
phase of the incident. There were some personnel resources that were not being
utilized correctly in triage efforts. For instance, half went to the minimal and no
injuries area to triage while the other half went to triage the more serious individuals.

I also felt the individual with the potential limb amputation should have been placed
on immediate instead of delayed. Even though they placed a tourniquet on the
patient s arm to control the hemorrhaging, the risk of him losing his limb should
have been high priority. The delayed category is only for individuals with finger
and toe amputations. The immediate category consists of life or limb. I also did not
see any information about the staff conducting reassessments of the individuals to
confirm their triage category. I do believe after reading this chapter that I could play
an essential role in disaster triage. It is a very black and white system that is easily
understandable. I enjoy working in a fast pace environment and helping those in
need. However, I do believe training and constant refreshers are essential to obtaining
and maintaining the learned

As a young child, Follow the Leader was not my favorite game; the idea of blinding
following someone who made all the decisions was not something I was ever
prepared to do. And, it certainly did not bring me any enjoyment when I was
forced to play. Although it seems like an oxymoron, being forced to play happened
to me quite frequently in my youth and young adulthood, and later, as single

Creativity involves putting your imagination to work. In a sense, creativity is applied
imagination (Robinson, 2012, p.142). One of the many statements in this particular
text that made me think and respond with disagreement. First, I was proud of myself
that I felt strongly enough to voice the fact that I disagree with a leader in the field in
the development of creativity. Second, this statement is a logical fallacy similar to
the chicken and the egg conundrum. According to Robinson (2012) creativity is the
physical manifestation of the imagination, but without the muse of creation, there
would be no imagination. Creativity can spark the

29. Magic Flute Analysis
Die Zauberflöte, The Magic Flute is composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It is
a singspiel in two acts. Its German libretto is written by Austrian actor and theatrical
producer Emanuel Schikaneder.
In early 1791, Mozart was deeply in debt as his music no longer appealed to the
Viennese public. Thus Mozart was extremely keen when Emanuel Schikaneder
suggested that they work together on a new opera.
Schikaneder had arrived in Vienna in 1789. He managed the Theater auf der Wieden,
a theatre that specialized in popular German language musical entertainment, which
were often comical with foreign or fantastic settings.
Soon after his arrival, Schikaneder had been extremely successful with the magic
opera Oberon by composer Paul Wranitzky and librettist Carl Ludwig Giesecke.
Following this success, Schikaneder decided to write the libretto to The Magic Flute,
with Mozart composing the music. Schikaneder promised to give Mozart the rental
fees for productions following the premiere. However, he later went back on his
word and for years, Mozart s widow fought for the money while The Magic Flute
made profit all over Europe.
The Magic Flute began composition in May/June and most of it was completed by
July. Mozart composed most of the music in a little hut on the grounds of Theater
auf der Wieden. In mid September, Mozart began the final preparations for the
premiere of The Magic Flute, which included composing the Overture, the part of
his opera which he always wrote last. The full score of The Magic Flute was
finished on September 28th and it premiered at Theater auf der Wieden on September
30, 1791. Mozart conducted the orchestra, while Schikaneder sang the role of
Papageno.
Mozart wrote many vocal parts for specific singers he knew. One example is The
Queen of the Night, whose arias require the singer to sing F6, which is extremely
demanding. For the less experienced singers, Mozart wrote and supported their parts
with the orchestra.
On the opening night, although the performance was good, the audience did not
respond enthusiastically as the unconventional and wide range of music in the opera
were breaking the norms and expectations of what an opera was. However, this
sparked immense curiosity and drew in huge

Uncontrolled profanity is found in many neurolinguistics disorders, the most famous
is Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS). GTS, which was first identified by Itard and
Gilles de la Tourette in the 1800s, is a hyperkinetic motor speech disorder
characterized by frequent involuntary tics, which are sudden pattern like movements

In fact, through childhood and adolescent trial and error they tested words to see
where the line of appropriateness is drawn in certain social circles. Neuroscientists
from Weill Medical College of Cornell University explored the brain to understand
how profanity reverberates inside the complex wiring of humans minds using the
neuroimaging technique PET (positron emission tomography) scans. By 1999, they
found the amygdala, which is responsible for processing emotion and memory, was
highly active when exposed to profanity, But because the amygdala is also
connected to the memory function part of the brain, duplication decreases the
activity. If a child grew up hearing people saying curse words around their friends,
the possibility of curse words shocking you in other social circles lowers. In
particular, amygdala activity is correlated with negative emotional associations.
Stimulating the amygdala can cause panic attacks and aggressive behaviors while
destroying the amygdala causes unusual placidness or fearlessness Therefore; it
makes sense that the amygdala would be activated in association with unpleasant
words such as Profanity. The amygdala also makes several connections to memory
and association centers in the brain, which could also be responsible for the increased

The automotive industry is a large industry and a significant economic sector; as it is
with all large industries, it has faced many challenges to become the economic giant it
is today and will continue to face more challenges in the future. There are not only
domestic rivals for U.S. automotive companies to compete with, but strong foreign
ones as well. To remain competitive, companies must utilize the latest technology in
such a way that their products become more efficient and therefore more competitive.
Unfortunately, this harsh competitiveness may make leaders in the industry negligent
of the negative impacts their industry has on the environment.
The automotive industry is one that has proved to be lucrative, which may compel
more competitors to partake in it. Construction of overseas facilities and the merging
of large multinational automakers have attributed to the globalization of the auto
industry (Esterhuizen, n.d.). This globalization of the industry increases competition,
putting pressure on domestic companies to compete with their foreign counterparts.
This pressure may lead many big companies to merge or establish partnerships with
other companies. In fact, The Big Three of the United States (General Motors, Ford,
and Chrysler) have done so with European and Japanese manufacturers. Merging may
be done to diversify a company, grow its market share, increase its supply chain
pricing power, or even eliminate competition (Renaud, 2006). Whatever the reason,

Sectarianism, trade unions and politics James King a union activist was vociferous
in 1886 on the barriers presented by sectarian divisions for effective trade

for throttling his obnoxious neighbour more readily than he would a penny for

held such fanatical and extreme religious views, William Small was of the belief
that weak union organisation in Lanarkshire in the 1890s had not helped due to
jealousy between certain sections there are religious differences...and racial

in the 1894 Scottish miners strike when the union had been crucified between racial
an religious prejudices . Campbell highlights how sectarian divisions were
symptomatic of the time in recalling two incidents that took place in the miners
strikes of 1879 and 1894. The 1879 strikes were over wage reductions and resulted in
pits throughout the Hamilton area being closed. On their return from one of many
strike meetings a group of Catholic miners mistook a Cambuslang band, of no
religious affiliation, for that of the local Orange band known as the True Blue . There
followed a full scale running attack on the band, wrecking their instruments and
physically attacking band

History itself is a diachronic science and constructing a true historical record
coincidentally begins its origins in the West. History starts in Mesopotamia and
Egypt then somehow works its way into Rome, then the text books, then the

countries keep, which Americans rely on. This goes side by side with the
repetitive role Euro centrism plays in defining our origins and identity in society.

BILLY BUDD
There are many ways you can argue if the novel Billy Budd was a good novel or a
bad one. You can determine this by looking at such things as plot, character, and the
use of language. The book is about a sailor that has been impressed (the act of
forcibly taking sailors and making them serve in the navy) by the British navy. It is
set in the late 1700 s during the French Revolution which overthrew the anarchy,
addressed peoples concerns, and it was mainly a focus on human rights. The
Revolution also influenced the way sailors thought because of the mutinies at Spit

Also it can make it more exciting because you know where they would be on the
boat and you know if a person can be maybe close to falling off the boat. The plot
was also interesting because you know that the people on the boat are far away
from land so if anything happens such as a low supply of food then you know they
most likely will not be able to get back to land to replenish their food supply. It is
just mainly interesting because you know that they, for the most part; are cut off
from society, because they have no way of contacting them. They did not have things
like cell phones or anything then so they had to rely on each other.
The novel was not so great due to some of the characters. Mr. Claggart to be more
specific. The role he played was the ships master at arms. But the cruel nature of the
man was taken a little to far. Making you more wonder why he was yelling at some
one and at some times making the book a little more confusing than it should had
been. If you have no clue why a character is yelling at another character you are
more confused then anything. And when you did know what he was yelling at
someone for you where still confused because the reason he was yelling at some one
was probably ridiculous, instead of just.

What were the Causes and Consequences of the War of Independence (1857) The

43. Role Of God In Iberian Conflict
God as an Observer to Iberian Conflict Throughout the accounts of war in Iberia,
both Christians and Muslims alike call upon God to grant them favor, strength, and
protection as they charge into battle. Where they differ on the subject is typically
ingrained in the belief that only one form of worship is correct for the monotheistic
deity, and in doing so use Gods invocation to justify the Christian and Muslim
invasions. However, God himself does not intervene with the conflicts, but rather
plays a role as an observer to the conflict whose name continues to be mentioned
despite his lack of contributions to said wars. In this paper I will argue that God is an
omnipotent observer to the Iberian conflicts between Christians and Muslims, in

For example, during the Umayyad campaigns when territories were taken by the
Muslims it s described that Castles and fortresses quaked as though death had rushed
upon them, [...] / their hearts, publicly recognizing obedience, unanimously agreed to
join the Islamic community, which suggests that the military conquest was the
reason for the conversion, not God as the Muslims believed (The First Campaign
Undertaken by the Prince of the Faithful, 80 82). Because the denizens of the lands
converted, they were spared from further death and destruction, and so it begs the
question: if God was going to have them convert at the end of the battle, why would
he not have them convert before innocents were killed? Therefore, it seems that God
once again is merely observing the developments as the Umayyad Caliphate expands,
and he has no particular favor with Islam or Christianity because if he did he probably
would have shown a sign to either religion or saved them from death. In the same
way, El Cid justifies his conquests by declaring that I win battles as it pleases the
Creator, and both Moors and Christians fear me, which suggests that God favors no
side in the conflict as he allows El Cid to plunder the countryside of its wealth (Cid,
153). This also establishes that God observes El Cid s conquests and victories, does
nothing when his followers The Moors called on Muhammad
44. Essay about Sweatshops
Written over 50 years ago, was a declaration made, promising equality and fair
treatment for the working, which unfortunately turned out to be a false promise for
some. The people I speak of, are our fellow human beings working in slave like
conditions called sweatshops. Sweatshops have always been prevalent in society,
this can be shown by looking at the history of sweatshops. Presently organizations
are failing in there strive to end sweatshops, companies are failing to abide by the
moral code (apparel industrycode), there is an ever growing gap between rich and
poor, and consumers are continuing to buy the companies products and remain
unaware.

UNITE is helping workers form unions to get the fair labor conditions they deserve.

sweatshop conditions for American workers, it s making the most difference,
probably because they are so close to home. Although there have been many
successes for these groups, all these efforts and many more, have still not put a stop
to the issue of sweatshops.

45. The Rifle Into The Federal Army
With a new century, came new advancements in technology, and weaponry. Muskets
used in the American Revolutionary War were outdated and inaccurate when it came
to the Civil War. The introduction of the rifle into the Federal Army put the Northern
Army leagues ahead of the Southern Army at the battlefield. Because of the highly
industrial based economy in the North, the usage of rifled bore firearms became
widespread in the Federal Army. Moreover, rifles also saw improvements in loading
efficiency, changing the main method of loading to breech loading. Breech loading a
rifle, when compared to the archaic method of ramming the bullet down the barrel or
muzzle loading, greatly reduced the chance of injury caused by the rifle. In... Show

This allowed the cylinder of the pistol to spin freely while in half cock, enabling the
soldier/wielder to easily reload whenever he/she felt necessary. With such numerous
advantages over the flintlock pistols , the Colt Revolver essentially revolutionized
the way weapons were created and their mechanisms. In the current day, most
firearms operate with a magazine which holds the bullets that are to be fired from the
weapon. Similarly, in the Colt Revolver, there was a cylinder containing the bullets
that were to be shot from the Revolver thereby maximizing the efficiency of weapons.
In addition to advancements in smaller firearms, the US military also saw
improvements in the sector of long range rifles. Muzzle loading muskets from the
Revolutionary War were highly inefficient and and extremely dangerous to use. When
on the battlefield, trying to load a muzzle loading musket became very complicated.
If the soldier loaded a bullet but it got jammed, and they tried to fire, the musket
would explode in their face, causing many unnecessary injuries to the soldier force
(National Park Service, Evolution of the Breechloader ). With the invention of the
breech loader, loading a rifle became exceedingly simple. In a breech loading rifle,
the soldier loads a cartridge containing the bullet and the gunpowder into a chamber.
They would then proceed to fire the weapon. This method of loading a weapon was

The true impact of discoveries examines whether they lead the individual to new
perceptions of the world or new understandings of self. This isn t expressed through
the process, but instead through the aftermath of discovering. This notion is
communicated in the text of The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas by Ursula K.
Le Guin. Citizens who walk away from Omelas have gained a new perception of the
world and understanding of themselvses, as they are able to grasp the significance of
the horrible treatment of the sacrificial child beneath the utopian city unlike the
citizens who aren t impacted by the discovery, choosing to ignore and neglect the
existence of the child whose existence guaranteed their happiness. New
understandings are developed
47. A Rose For Emily s House As A Symbol And Or Metaphor
Essay
1. Discuss the ways in which Faulkner uses Miss Emily s house as a symbol and/or
metaphor both her character s personality and circumstances and for the narrative s
broader themes. What does the description of Emily s house at the beginning of the
story, particularly, but also throughout the narrativereveal about her character? About
the story s historical setting? About the narrative s central concerns? As an image
of decrepit grandeur, Miss Emily s house is used to symbolize Miss Emily s
character herself, the historical setting in which the story takes place, and some of
the story s central themes. Described as a big, squarish frame house that had once
been white, decorates with cupolas and spires and scrolled balconies (Faulkner 1),
the house is ornate and grand in design, even being located on what was once an
exclusive street in Jefferson. However, over time, it had become dilapidated and
unkempt, with the interior being dark and full of dust, possessing a close, dank
smell (Faulkner 1). Similarly, Miss Emily was once a young lady of high standing,
opulent in her own ways, but slowly aged and lost her grandeur, becoming a small,
fat woman(Faulkner 1) whose hair was turning grayer as the days went by. Much
like her home, Miss Emily was losing her charm over time, showing that her
character was stubbornly grasping on to the idea that she still retained an image of
splendor she no longer possessed, all while isolating herself from the rest of the town.

Angelman syndrome can be diagnosed within the first year of the life if the
abnormalities are noticed and investigated, but the disorder is more often diagnosed
between 1 and 4 years of age as the child s abnormalities become more clinically
apparent (Bevinetto). In order to confirm the diagnosis, a blood test must be done to
look at the child s genetics (Angelman). Then, a combination of genetic test can
reveal the chromosome defects. There are three different defect tests may reveal:
parental DNA pattern, missing chromosome, or gene mutation. Parental DNA pattern
test screens for three of the four genetic defaults that cause this syndrome. To find out
if the chromosome is missing either a fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) test or
a comparative genomic hybridization test (CGH) can show if portions of
chromosomes are missing. It is rare if Angelman syndrome occurs with only a gene
mutation. This happens when the UBE3A gene is present and active, but mutated. A
UBE3A gene sequencing test is used to look for maternal mutation (Mayo). After the
diagnosis is complete, treatments are discussed with the patient and their

A study by the Palm Center, a research branch from the University of California
Los Angeles Law School, conducted a study a year after the repeal of DADT. The
research group wanted to discover what impacts the repeal has done to the military
and according to their findings they concluded: (1) The repeal of DADT has had no
overall negative impact on militaryreadiness or its component dimensions, including
cohesion, recruitment, retention, assaults, harassment or morale. (2) A
comparison of 2011 pre repeal and 2012 post repeal survey data shows that service
members reported the same level of military readiness after DADT repeal as
before it. (3) Even in those units that included openly LGB service members, and
that consequently should have been the most likely to experience a drop in
cohesion as a result of repeal, cohesion did not decline after the new policy of open
service was put into place. In fact, greater openness and honesty resulting from
repeal seem to have promoted increased understanding, respect and acceptance. (4)
Recruitment was unaffected by the repeal of DADT. In an era when enlistment
standards are tightening, service wide recruitment has remained robust. (5)
Retention was unaffected by the repeal of DADT. There was no mass exodus of
military members as a result of repeal, and there were only two verifiable
resignations linked to the policy change, both military chaplains. Service members
were as likely to say that they plan to re enlist after DADT repeal as

Gravity is a natural force that acts on every thing, and every one on Earth, it is the
force that keeps us down to the ground. How does a roller coaster defy a 360
degree loop without falling down toward the ground? Lets take a look at the
factors that affect the loops of a roller coaster. Gravity is counteracted by the force
of acceleration, which is force that can either be forwards known as positive
acceleration, or negative which is known as negative acceleration (Everyday
Mysteries, 2013). A roller coaster is not powered by a engine compared to a car.
The only wait they raise up a hill is by a lift or cable that pulls the train up, which
contradicts what many think that the tracks are what have belts. The lifts or cables
build potential energy built up which will be used to go down a hill along with the
force of gravity. The potential energy is transformed to kinetic energy as the cart or
train reaches the bottom of the hill (Everyday Mysteries, 2013). According to
Newton s First Law of Motion, which states, an object in motion tends to stay in
motion, unless another force acts against it (Everyday Mysteries, 2013). Wind, or
even the friction between the wheel and the tracks cause the train to slow in speed.
This explains why the hills normally at the end of the ride are lower because there is
less energy.
53. The Extent Of Success Of The Land Registration Act 2002
The Extent of Success of the Land Registration Act 2002
Introduction
Being one of the most extensive law reforms of the Law Commission, Land
Registration Act 2002 aims to create a flawless legal framework for land registration,
especially in terms of conveyancing with emphasis on overriding interests and
adverse possession. It is agreed that the Land Registration Act 2002 (hereafter LRA
2002), by putting emphasis on strict registration, moved the idea of land ownership
from ownership by possession to bureaucratization of title via registration. Therefore,
LRA 2002 is said to bring further strictness and clarity to land ownership and
subsequent conveyancing. In conjunction, LRA 2002 was expected to bring an e
conveyancing revolution to land registration which was awaited to be a major
success. Although steps are taken towards this development, it is claimed that there
is still long way to go before a complete and problem free e conveyancing system.
Apart from matters relating to conveyancing, LRA 2002 consists of sections
regarding overriding interests where their number and scope are widely reduced with
specifications of registration introduced. Moreover, the Act includes strictly drafted
provisions about adverse possession, aiming to bring further restrictions to this matter
by bringing further difficulties to the acquisition of title and therefore shifting from a
squatter prone approach to a registered owner supporting view.

INTRODUCTION
With the furtherance of computer networks extending boundaries and joining distant
locations, wireless sensor networks (WSN) emerged as the new frontier in
developing opportunities in order to collect and process data from remote locations.
A wireless sensor network is a collection of nodes organized in a cooperative
manner. Multiple sensor nodes arranged in proximity to sense an event and
subsequently transmit sensed and collected information to a remote processing unit
or base station. The nodes are able to communicate wirelessly and often self
organize after being deployed in an ad hoc fashion. More than 1000s or even 10,000
nodes are expected. Currently, wireless sensor

First of all, though both having been influenced by Buddhism, the reincarnations of
main characters in the two stories are somehow different because they are also
affected by other ideologies and cultures. In Vietnamese Tam Cam, Tam undergo
four times of reincarnation (a nightingale, a white cedar tree, a wooden loom and a
persimmon fruit) whereas in Neang Angkat, the girl reborns two times. The
reincarnation process of Tam is linked with Confucian ideology of female virtues
and behaviour. For instance, her transformation from a persimmon fruit into a human
shape to do the housework and cook for the old woman represents the virtue of
skillful of work, which is one of four Confucian virtues that Vietnamese women need
to obtain (Bui, 2009). Differently, two forms of reincarnation in Cambodian
Cinderella a banana tree and a grove of bamboo only describe two symbolic images
of this eastern country. Another difference is the supernatural power. Whereas the
Bụt in Tam Cam stands for the Buddha, the Spirit of Virtue in Cambodia s Neang
Angkat is said to be stand in for her dead mother (Bettelheim, 1974). The Bụt is a
religious image, appearing in many other folk lores in Vietnam and willing to help

A tidal salt marsh is a community of plants and animals that thrive in wet saline
conditions (ADBC, 2010), which rely on the tides to bring nutrients, such as
oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorous. As the tide leaves the wetlands, pools are
exposed which shorebirds can feed on larvae without competition from fish that
was impossible during the time period of water diversion and dam construction.
The land became baron; an area of waste land, until 1967, when the water originally
diverted for irrigation of fields, was redirected to the lowland area. In 2006, a tidal
inlet was successfully opened after 107 years, allowing the tide to flow to various
parts of the wetlands which had previously been closed off (ADBC, 2010).

57. Conspiracy Theories Of The American Conspiracy
Conspiracy has been deeply rooted into American culture since before the
Constitution. Many Americans still believe that there are secret societies of the
elite that exert great influence in not just the American government, but events on
an international scale as well. These conspiracy theories appeal to a populist
perspective, one that says that there are people much more powerful than the
average American and they are knowingly infringing on American liberties, with
the goal to either control or harm the country. These supposed conspiracy groups
are well known because they have become engrained in America s culture for
hundreds of years; elite groups such as the Illuminati and the Freemasons are
known for stirring political anxiety in the early years of the American Republic.
Some of this anxiety would be justified early on, but much of it would later prove
to be hysteria and paranoia. As those Masonic groups would die down in relevance
as the years went on, the paranoia that they created in conspiracy theorist s minds
would be replaced by other branches of secret societies for the elite that were
focused on wealth, political power, and globalist visions. Elite invite only groups,
such as the Bilderbergs, the Skull and Bones, and the Bohemian Club are all looked
at by some conspiracy theorists as organizing a New World Order that is outside of
the public s eyes. Furthermore, other conspiracy theorists believe that it is not the
secret societies that Americans should be
