The Vortex: Experiments in Online Collaboration

Critical aspects of digital tools in learning processes during the near future
“We tend to overestimate the effect of a technology in the short run and underestimate the effect in the long run.” Roy Amara. Therefore we may predict or at least get an idea on what will happen next by closely following the technology development and by having a active role in it. The design and development of digital tools for learning or tools in general that are adapted to teaching and learning is not unproblematic. The three mega trends in technology; (1) Internet-based networks, (2) growing computing capacity and (3) automatization and robotics are providing new pedagogical and societal opportunities but also new challenges. The most interesting research themes related to the digital learning tools are the future of formal and informal learning, virtual social environments and analytics and adaptation. Working with the themes as a design researcher and designer one should be highly aware of the possible ethical issues related to these. To analyze the impact, positive and negative, we can use so called McLuhan’s Laws of Media, four questions we present to new media / tools.

Computing education has faced a variety of ongoing and critical self-examinations over the past 15 years. This paper provides a set of critiques and alternative teaching approaches for two vital but under-reported computing knowledge areas: web development and computing ethics/social issues. It concludes with a claim that these two knowledge areas can also provide an important way to integrate the often-heterogeneous knowledge areas in the computing curriculum.

Abstract: Inspired by a Seamus Heaney poem (Lightenings viii), I’ll explore “navigating the marvellous”, the challenge of embracing open practices, of being open, in higher education, from the perspective of educators and students, citizens and policy makers. To be in higher education is to learn in two worlds: the open world of informal learning and networked connections, and the predominantly closed world of the institution. As higher education moves slowly, warily, and unevenly towards openness, students deal daily with the dissonance between these two worlds; navigating their own paths between them, and developing different skills, practices, and identities in the various learning spaces which they visit and inhabit. Educators also make daily choices about the extent to which they teach, share their work, and interact, with students and others, in bounded and open spaces. How might we construct and navigate Third Spaces of learning, not formal or informal but combined spaces where connections are made between students and educators (across all sectors), scholars, thinkers, and citizens — and where a range of identities and literacy practices are welcomed? And if, as Joi Ito has said, openness is a survival trait for the future, how do we facilitate this process of “opening education”? The task is one not just of changing practices but of culture change; we can learn much from other movements for justice, equality and social change.

However, a study by the American Foundation for the Blind found serious accessibility issues that prevent blind users from independently creating accounts and fully participating on major social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, Friendster, and LinkedIn. CAPTCHAs that require users to type letters and words seen onscreen cannot be completed by blind users without sighted assistance. I had the opportunity to take this course because of the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges. There are many without such an opportunity.
