  2. Quickly go over agenda Ask how many have done an NID, etc? Thank those that have. Ask how many feel they have not done anything worth a story Tell story of Overland Secretary training and DG request.
  3. Even with all the Social Media and Press Releases done by Rotarians, Rotary is still not that well known in the world. Only 20% of the general public know something about us and what we do. And, the ‘General Public’ is who we go to for membership and fundraising. It makes our jobs of increasing members and raising funds much more difficult when we first have to educate them on Rotary.
  4. Our Public Image is also important for our own membership. Who doesn’t like to see their photo and/or name in print? On the web? Mentioned on the radio or television? This is a way to instill pride in our members. It is also a way for us to increase membership, funding and partners – once they know WHO Rotary is and what WE do.
  5. These are three parts of a GREAT story. A story should not ramble – it should help to clarify what we do & who we are. A story should elevate understanding and awareness of what we do and who we are. A story should motivate, engage and inspire ourselves AND OTHERS once we AND they know what we do and who we are. TELL STORY OF SCHOOL AND POLIO WITH FACEBOOK
  6. History is very different from the STORY of Rotary. History has to do mainly with facts and figures. Stories are PERSONAL and have a much more impact due to the EMOTION and PASSION from which it is told. Compare reading a History book to reading about Nelson Mandela’s biography, for example.
  7. So….what are the Building Blocks of Rotary? What is it that makes us US?
  8. Essence – Joins Leaders – Exchange Ideas – Take Action. Rotary is made up of leaders – business, civic AND community – who exchange idea of what needs to be done to better the world – local, regional or truly world-wide – and TAKE ACTION. We do not just come up with the ideas, but actually do something about it.
  9. These are important. These are the values that all Rotarians share.
  10. Interesting to note that the WHAT WE ARE NOT is very important. We do not want to appear conceited, know-it-all, arrogant, zealous, etc.
  11. So….how do we JOIN LEADERS? This is where our sheer numbers come into play. With our membership, we transform the world. We don’t just find problems….we solve them!
  12. One of the things that sets Rotary apart from other fine organizations is the truly international aspect. We have members WHERE THE PROJECT(S) WILL BE DONE guiding and advising the partner Clubs on what is needed. We REQUIRE both a HOST and INTERNATIONAL partner to make things work.
  13. Again….we TAKE ACTION. And, given today’s world culture, the HIGH ETHICAL STANDARDS are a very important theme to emphasize.
  14. Stories sometimes come when you least expect them. TELL STORY OF NEW ORLEANS MISSION PROJECT.
  15. Individuals are what make stories interesting. And, the more the story impacts YOU, the more impact it will have on others. CONTINUE WITH NEW ORLEANS MISSION STORY
  16. Stress the Rotary Jargon part.
  17. Each audience will have a slightly different ‘feel.’ Be sure to have several different stories ‘in your back pocket’ to fit the particular audience AND result(s) you encounter. NEW ORLEANS MISSION STORY GOAL – I could not do it on my own; but with help of 3 other DG Classmates, many Rotary volunteers AND non-Rotary groups, we were able to impact the 150 men who lived in the shelter and to change their lives. We JOINED LEADERS, EXCHANGED IDEA & TOOK ACTION. This is the Power of Rotary.
  18. Tell LIZ ‘LISTENING’ STORY
  19. As DG, you are required to attend each Club and give a presentation. For ease of operation, you tend to present the same message. However, it changes some based on the Club visited. For example, when I visited one Club in a small community, they were all sitting around one table. Rather than appear in the ‘formal’ setting of up at a podium – which I would have done at larger Clubs – I visited with them while still seated around the table. The Rotarian sitting next to me said she almost didn’t come today, given the fact that the District Governor was visiting. She said she was very glad she came because I was approachable, and not like she envisioned.
  20. It is best to learn through examples. I will NOT grade them! Would anyone like to share their Rotary Story?
  21. My dad used to quote this man many times. The phrase has been attributed to Dizzy Dean as well as others. However, it still holds true today – Have YOU bragged? Have YOU told YOUR story?
