  1. One thing we all do daily is eat food. It is an experience we all share. “You are what you eat” is an old saying that still holds true today. What we eat affects our bodies .

  3. It is important for people to eat a variety of foods.

  5. This picture shows the food pyramid. It tells what foods you need to eat each day to stay healthy and grow and develop properly. You should choose food from each food group every day.
  6. As you can see there are SIX food groups in the food pyramid. A food group has the same kinds of foods.
  7. The biggest food group is bread, cereal, rice, and pasta. Your body needs lots of these foods. Crackers, pretzels, and pancakes would all fit into this group.
  8. It is important to eat vegetables each day. These foods give your body many vitamins that make energy. Energy is fuel for the human body.
  9. Fruits can be naturally sweet. But sometimes they are sour, bitter, or tangy. They are important sources of vitamin C. Fruit juices are also included in this group.
  10. As we go up the food pyramid, the sections for each food group get smaller. We need fewer servings of these foods every day.
  11. Milk, yogurt, and cheese give our body calcium and protein to help our bones and teeth grow strong.
  12. This next food group gives your body protein and iron. Proteins are one of the main building materials in your body. They help our muscles, skin, and hair.
  13. Besides meat, poultry, fish, and eggs, other foods belong in this food group. These foods include dried beans that may be used to make soups, nuts, and peanut butter.
  14. The top of the pyramid is the smallest part. That reminds us to eat only a little of these foods each day because our body does not need as much of them. Candy, butter, and soda are in this group.
  15. Sometimes foods are mixed together. Then foods from more than one food group are being eaten. Pizza, tacos, and many soups are examples of these foods.
  16. Now to review--This picture shows the food pyramid. It tells about the foods you need to eat throughout each day to stay healthy and grow and develop properly. You should choose food from each food group every day.
  17. To maintain good health, it is important to have three well-balanced meals every day. The human body has a constant need for different kinds of foods. A balanced meal has foods from many food groups. It has few fats or sweets.
  18. Breakfast is an especially important meal because it provides a great deal of energy needed to start the day. This breakfast shows meat, eggs, hash brown potatoes, juice, and milk.
  19. Eating three balanced meals can help you stay healthy. For lunch, you may eat a hotdog on a bun, an apple, and a glass of lemonade. Be sure you use just a little ketchup or relish.
  20. Supper or dinner is the third meal you should be eating each day. This spaghetti dinner has pasta with meatballs, a fresh salad, a breadstick, and a large glass of milk.
  21. If you have eaten all of this food throughout the day, you probably have had all that your body will need. But if you’re still hungry you may want a snack.
  22. Food you eat between meals is a snack. Some snacks are good for your body; some are not Nacho chips, cookies, and doughnuts have too much fat and oil in them.
  23. This picture shows healthful foods. Fruits and vegetables are good snacks because they are low in fat. Snacks can be from more than one food group, too. Cheese and crackers or celery with peanut butter and raisins on it are a few examples.
  24. So let’s go back to the beginning of our slides. Can you now select the kinds of foods that will keep your body fit and healthy?
  25. You can if you let the six groups on the food pyramid be your guide to healthful foods. These are important both at mealtime and snacktime.
