5. INTRODUCTION
There are two important properties of
Bakuchi viz. vishaghna and shvitronasana.
In charka samhita it included into
tikta skanda. It used in arsha roga. It
considered as vishaghna in sutrasthana 2/22.
It is used in hair oil. In chiktsa sthana 26/268
it mentioned as one of the ingredient of
mahaanila tail which use in khalitya.
In sushruta samitha it included in
katu varga. In meda-ayushkamiya adhyaya
there is beautiful explanation about it. In
sushruta samitha it also considered as
vishaghna in kalpa sthana 5/86.

9. SYNONYMES
•Bakuchi: It effectively treats the skin
disease.
•Krishnaphala: It is having black fruits.
•Kustha-nashini: It cures the kustha.
•Avalguja: It’s fruits appear ugly.
•Somaraji: It’s seeds have white streak
inside.
•Kalameshi: It survives for long period.
•Putiphala: It’s fruits having foul smell.

•It is found throughout India as a weed in
waste places and also in Srilanka.
•It is grown in Maharashtra and Madhya
Pradesh states of India.

•Plants- Trees, shrubs, or herbs, generally with
tubercles on roots.
• Leaves:-Alternate,simple or usually compound,
stipulates.
• Flowers :–regular of irregular, bisexual.
•Sepals:-5, united, or free, often unequal, odd
sepal anterior.
•Petals:- 5, free, unequal, sometimes partly united.
•Fruit:- A legume or pod, sometimes lomentum.

12. It is a annual herb, which grows 30 to 80
cm in height
Leaves : broadly elliptic, inciso-dentate.
Flowers: in axillary longpeduncled heads,
bluish-purple or yellow.
Fruits: pods, indehiscent, ovate, in shape.
Dark chocolate to almost black in color.
3.5-4.5mm x 2.0-3.0mm in size ,having a
seed in it
Seeds: smooth, adhering to the pericarp.

According to Sushruta samhita chikitsa
sthana 28/3 there are two varieties of
Bakuchi.
•Shweta Avalguja
•Krishna Aalguja
The shweta avalguja used as medhya
rasayana
14. Some author considered bakuchi as
vernonia Anthemintica Wild. But it is the
name of arnaya-jiraka.
