10. My Research Information about Slavery and
The Underground Railroad (Using Galileo)
• The Underground Railroad was not an actual railway. It was a secret organization that was in
the United States before the Civil War. The people of the Underground Railroad helped
escaped slaves from the South get to places of safety in the North or in Canada.
• Harriet Tubman was a black abolitionist. She organized the Underground Railroad. The
Underground Railroad was a way for slaves to escape to the North. Abolitionists worked to end
slavery. Abolitionists were black people and white people.
• Most African Americans have ancestors who were slaves.
• “Slaves were taken from their African homelands and shipped to the Americas. There, white
people forced them to work without pay and in harsh conditions. English settlers brought the
first African slaves to the colony of Virginia in the early 1600s. By 1790 black people made up
nearly one fifth of the population of the United States. Most slaves lived and worked on
plantations, or large farms, in the South.”
