The document contains responses to questions about conducting a survey on documentary viewing habits. It discusses that the survey received responses from equal numbers of males and females between ages 16-25 and 25-40. The majority of respondents preferred documentaries about human behavior over wildlife or sports. Respondents were split on whether they enjoyed watching documentaries. The BBC was the most popular channel for documentaries. Most respondents preferred to see archive footage rather than other elements in documentaries. Tablets and TV were the most popular ways to watch documentaries. The conclusions were that people generally prefer human behavior documentaries and archive footage.
Measures of Central Tendency: Mean, Median and Mode
Â
Audience research
1. Q1 Q2
Q1-The results that I have collected are biased as I specifically sent it out to 4 males and 4 females. I did this purposely to get a
balanced amount of results. This will affect my outcome because then it can help make my documentary suitable for both male
and female.
Q2-The ages that filled in this survey consisted from 25-40 and 16-25 year olds, the reason why I choose these different age
limits was because the style of documentary that I will be producing is human behaviour more suitable to younger adults and
teens. This will affect my outcome as I know what ages suit what genre, therefore determine what my documentary style will
be, and the age that it is suitable for.
2. Q3 Q4
Q3- In terms of ranking the styles of documentary's for question 3, it came back that everyone had a
different preference to what they watch. However it is evident that human behaviour is dominated in this
survey. In comparison to wildlife and sport were they arenât as popular to watch. This may be influenced
because of the generation and the age difference that completed the survey.
Q4- This question was a balanced argument, 50% saying yes and the other 50% saying no. This could be
gender biased, two women said they like to watch documentaries alongside 2 men and then 2 men and
women said they donât like watching documentaries, this could be a trend that is set or could identity the
style of documentaries that men and women both like. This may affect my outcome because it is a split
decision about people liking and not liking documentaries so only a few people would be interested to
watch my documentary.
3. Q5 Q6
Q5- in terms of the most popular institution, it was very clear that the BBC dominated this question, with 50%. BBC is one of the most popular TV institutions that produce a lot of
different documentary's genres. ITV didnât get any votes which may be because I limited the amount of people which the survey was sent to, and maybe some people werenât being
brutally honest with their choices. This may have an impact on my outcome because, it determines people preferences and preferred channels , which may lead my decision to change.
Q6- This question was a question which was left to the audiences own opinions simply creating an active audience. As you can see there are a lot of different answers about the channel
which they watch documentary's on, some more similar than others.
4. Q7 Q8
Q7- The majority of people being 50% said that they would want to see archive footage, rather than text, voiceovers and
interviews. I think the archive footage helps engage with the audience more because they actually get to see some aspects of
the tragic events that happened.
Q8- There are a lot of different types and styles of documentaries that people watched from Plant earth to sex, drugs and
murder: life in the red light zone.
5. Q9 Q9- it is clear that the tablet and tv dominates all the other
sources that people watch programmes on. I think it is clear
that more and more people are becoming attached to their
phones and watching programmes on BBC iPlayer, ITV., which
will eventually dominate the Television industry.
As I analysed the questionnaire, I have come to the conclusion
that the majority of people like to see archive footage in
documentaries. Most people voted for human behaviour as
there most favourite ranking.
6. Educating Essex The demographics for Educating
Essex is females from 18-24.
The top regions where the
majority of people watch it is in
the Midlands.
This will help determine my
results in order to produce a
documentary. I am going to use
this information by being
specific with the roles and
making sure it fits for the
gender, making it a gossip,
drama kind of documentary.
7. Keeping up with the KardashianâsThe demographics for Keeping
Up With the Kardashians is
females from 18-24.
The top regions where the
majority of people watch it is
East Anglia.
If I was producing a
documentary based on The
Kardashian, I would
appropriately set the scene and
get the right outfits for the
characters to fit the gender and
age.
8. Planet earth/ frozen planet The demographics for Planet
Earth is females from 55+
The top regions where the
majority of people watch it is in
the West country.
If I was to produce a nature
documentary I would make it
interesting for the viewers by
using lots of voiceovers and
archive footage to suit the
audience.
9. Making of a murder The demographics for Making a
murder is females from 25-39.
The top regions where the
majority of people watch it is in
the North West.
If I was to produce a crime
documentary, I would want to
get the location right, and the
actors to again suit the gender. I
wouldnât want to be gender bias
in relation to the actors so
having a variety of both male
and female actors will engage
the audience.
10. Yougov
⢠I have used Yougov as an additional audience research, it was really beneficial
as it provides detailed specific demographics for different programmes and
documentaries.
⢠The knowledge provided from this data, reinforces the demographic needed
to suit my genre of documentary âHuman Behaviourâ. As it states the gender,
age and region; ultimately this determines how the audience may react based
on these given catergories.
⢠YouGov has really helped me target the audience for my documentary with
the small but really beneficial information it provided, it has just given me
more sense and understanding of the demographic that I need to hit with my
documentary and advertisements.
