2. My film is about a young, upper class man who has a drug problem but is unaware of this problem. The film
involves a lot of violence and drug misuse so I want to portray this negative topic with very dark and gritty
shots. Also the main character will be wearing dark clothes to portray his low mood.
3. This park would be a good location for the first scene as it has enough space for the football game. The
many trees and bushes also give this park a slightly unsafe feel as someone could be hiding there.
4. These locations could be perfect
for multiple scenes in my film as
it gives a unsafe and dirty feel.
5. Questionnaire Results.
Gender
Females are the largest portion
meaning they should be the
priority in terms of marketing
this film.
However, a large portion of my
audience are male and non-
binary. They should also be
targeted towards.
6. Gender.
60% of people do not mind what the
gender of the main character is and 36.7%
would prefer a female lead.
Female lead would please both parties.
7. Gender
50% Don’t Mind as the story is more important.
10% said No as they also thing the story is more
important.
40% said Yes as it would be more relatable and
want better gender representation and diversity
in film.
The actor in my film will be cast based on skill
rather than specific gender gender but i will be
looking at primarily females to bring in a larger
audience.
8. Questionnaire Results.
Age
The majority of my target audience
are 16-34 years old. The secondary
audience will be 25-34 year old.
To target these audiences I will
have younger actors playing the
characters and stick with themes
that relate to young audiences.
9. Location
Most listed locations are Manchester, York,
Morecambe and Stockport. All towns in the
North of England.
All most all the audience lives in the U.K.
10. Location
50% said Yes as it would be more relatable and
would be interesting to see locations that are
familiar to them.
40% Don’t Mind as the story is more important
and their location does not particularly interest
them.
10% said No as their location does not interest
them and they prefer to watch foreign films.
As almost of my audience lives in the U.K and a
large portion from the North of England, my film
will be set in the North to accommodate my
audience.
11. Ethnicity
Almost all of my audience are
caucasian meaning that they
are they are the main target
audience for this film.
12. Ethnicity
63.3% Don’t Mind as the quality of the actor
is more important to them.
30% said No as they wish to see more
diversity and good actors in films.
6.7% said Yes as it would be more relatable.
To target these audiences I would cast
actors based on their skills rather than
ethnicity. However, I would try to branch
out so actors of multiple ethnicities audition
to have a more diverse cast.
14. Social Class
73.3% answered with Don’t Mind as the story is
more important. However some did mention that
they are sick of seeing “generic” upper and middle
class stories.
13.3% answered Yes as it would be more relatable
and are sick of seeing “rich white men” in films.
13.3% answered No as the story is more important
and it is interesting to see stories from other social
classes.
My film will avoid social class stereotypes and tell a
different story turning stereotypes on their heads.
15. Mature Topics.
76.7% said Yes as mature topics are interesting, reflect
real life and need to be discussed.
13.3% said Maybe as it all depends on the story and how
it is portrayed.
My film should have a realistic and serious portrayal of
the mature topics to bring in this audience.
My film will have a serious and realistic portrayal of
mature issues.
16. Conclusion
The primary target audience for my short film will be females that are 16-24 years old as these categories were
the biggest percentages. However, I will also try to appeal to males of the age range as 26.7% is still a big
percentage.
I will base my film in the north of England as this is where most of my audience is based. From my research I have
learnt that audiences tend to want to watch films set in their hometowns as it is familiar to them.
Although most a large majority of my audience is caucasian, they prefer films with a more diverse cast. With this
in mind, I will not select a specific ethnicity or gender for the characters and instead try to find the best actor.
The majority of my audience are middle class but stated that the social class of the characters do not influence
their decision to watch a film, as long as it does not follow stereotypes.
Overall, my target audience will be middle class females, aged 16-24, living in the North of England. I will not
specify one particular ethnicity as that would be too large of an audience to dismiss.
Editor's Notes
Mood board
Mock up
The majority of people who answered my survey were female with an overall 63.3%. Followed then by Males with 26.7% and non-binarys with 10%.
Females are the largest portion meaning they should be the priority in terms of marketing this film.
The majority of people said that they did not mind what the gender of the main character was. Then followed by 36.7% saying they would prefer a female lead. This means that the lead would preferably be a female to market to both parties that answered “don’t mind” and “female”.
I then asked if they would be more inclined to watch a film if the main character were as the same gender as you. Again, the largest group did not mind the gender. When I asked why many said they were more interested in a good story than the gender. However, 40% answered Yes. Many said that this would make the film more relatable to them. Another issued raised with the group that answered Yes is that they want to see more representation and diversity of genders in film. One person stated that “Women and nonbinary people are very underrepresented in film”. The 20% that answered no shared the same values as the Don’t Mind group saying that they just want a good story.
Most listed locations are Manchester, York, Morecambe and Stockport. All of these towns are in the north of England meaning to try and target these audiences the film should also be set in the north of England. Almost all the results came from within the U.K, apart from two, so settings it in the U.K will also target this secondary audience.
Almost all of the people who participated in my survey were white meaning that they are the main audience for this film.
To target these audiences I would cast actors based on their skills rather than ethnicity. However, I would try to branch out so actors of multiple ethnicities audition to have a more diverse cast.
For the last question I asked audiences if they were open to watching a film with mature topics and gave the example of drug misuse.
Overall, my target audience will be middle class females, aged 16-24, living in the North of England. I will not specify one particular ethnicity as that would be too large of an audience to dismiss.
