MY AUDIENCE
WHO IS THE AUDIENCE?
My audience is based around men/women aged 17-24 and predominantly students too. This can be
evidenced from the graph below. I made this decision before making the magazine so that i could tailor
my design to the demographic needs. I have done this through the features included on my magazine…
- I have added the reference to ‘top 40 as this shows the genre of new, modern music and also links
to the audience as they are people who are into this music as they are students so listen to this in
the clubs, showing age and also their social class.
- I have made my splash image unrevealing, so it does not cater towards men or women either as
no flesh is being shown. I have done this to cater to my gender audience of both sex’s so that no
sex is biased.
- The text based on the new tour is linked to the audience's age as it shows that they are young and
are interested in gigs, especially new music, which is a commonly listened to (as discovered in
research).
- I have tailored my main splash image to the audience also as it is based upon a new and
upcoming artist which reflects their want of modernity showing their youth too. Another way in
which i have done this is to use the prop of a pot noodle as it links to the social class of a student
as they live on basics and also caters to their lifestyle too as they do not eat posh meals and live
on a budget too.
- I have also made my DPS story about how a teen got into music as i think it is something that the
audience will be interested in, both sex’s as it does not show a particular gender’s artist.
- I have mentioned ‘gigs’ on my contents page, showing the audience's interests and hobbies.
NEW READER PROFILE
I think that my new reader profile is more appropriate as it contains more
information suited to my audience. I think this as, as i have made my
magazine i have realised that the audience fits more into the social group of
students and so have made my reader profile more fitting by adding qualities
of their lifestyle. ie hobbies. In comparison to my old profile i think that it was
quite varied and the new one is more specific in the audience's interests.
please refer to blog for a larger,
clearer version of both reader
profiles.
How did I attract this audience?
I used my masthead to attract my audience as it is bold and bright. It is also in capital
letters allowing for it to stand out clearly. I have also used 3D effect on my masthead
to make it stand out and to define the shape too. This is a useful method as it has
been used on NME cover too.
In comparison to my initial research i think that my
masthead attracts the audience well as it is
prominent on the page and clear to see. I have used
some of the techniques, ie shape and capital letters
on mine as it is similar to the magazines which i
have researched and effective in attracting the eye.
I have also made the title short and relevant so that
it is remembered.
How did I attract this audience?
In my images i have targeted the themes discussed in the magazine so that it relates to the audience more. I have pictured
images of concerts and gig ticket as from my research i discovered that this is something my target audience are interested in.
I think that these attract the audience as they allow a link into the story and will make the audience want to read more. I have
been influenced by other magazines which i researched in my project, such as this image below, taken from NME, showing a
band member of whom the audience are interested in. However i have also made sure to attract my audience by referring
back to my audience research. In my research i discovered that on average, 52% attended 1-3 music gigs per year, which is
why I have included the images below. My audience also showed a large interest in pop music in contrast to rock or any other
type of genre of music. In order to attract my audience here I pictured bands such as ‘Arctic Monkeys’.
How did I attract my audience?
I have attracted my audience by using adverts to sell certain products and giving away free things also. This makes the
audience want to buy the magazine and attracts the eye too. I took influence for these from other music magazines, such as
‘Kerrang’. In my audience research it showed how 48% of the participants were working on a weekend which shows their
dedication to earning money. It also suggests that they have low money funds so would appreciate the 70% off. I have also
added these to attract my student audience as i know, as a student that money of new clothes is always viewed as a positive. In
my research i discovered that most students shop at ‘highstreet brands’ therefor the idea of having a 70% off would attract
them. I have also added ‘free music posters’ due to the age range of the target audience.
These are some examples
from Kerrang and NME and
also my magazine, showing
the comparison of real
publications and how this is a
convention to attract
audiences.
How did I attract my audience?
Inside of my magazine, on the contents page i have mentioned many artists such as
‘ED SHEERAN’ and ‘JUSTIN BIEBER’. I have done this as in my research it clearly
showed that the audience were wanting new musicians like that as they listened to
them. This can be evidenced in my survey responses as i asked the audience to name
some of their favourite artists. This entices my audience as they are the musicians
that they are into so will be more interested in the magazine. I have also seen this in
other magazines, as it is clear in such as ‘Kerrang’ as all of the bands fit a certain
genre, showing the audiences research for the genre.
evidence from surveys.
How did I attract my audience?
I have attracted my audience by referring to social media throughout. I have done
this on my contents and double page spread as it re issues the media. I have also
done this to attract the audience as in my research i found that most of the
participants thought that they ‘could not live without social media’ (taken from
interview 1). Therefore using sites such as ‘facebook’ or ‘twitter’ to advertise my
magazine would be acceptable as it would be more relatable to my target audience. I
have done this mainly by offering the hashtag to be able to use on twitter.I have also
evidenced the use of this from other magazines below, showing that this method of
attracting your audience is efficient and a popular convention.
Kerrang’s twitter page shows how they use
social media to attract their audiences..
Addressing the Audience
When addressing my audience I used colloquial language so that the target
audience would understand and be attracted into reading this. An example of
this is the term ‘TOP 40’. This shows how i have related my language to the
audience as it is a reference to the music charts which they will understand. I
have suited the language used, on the contents and DPS to be fitting into the
theme of music and i have not used over complicated either as i know that
reading an over complicated, boring piece is something which the audience
won’t be interested in! Another example of this could be my reference to a ‘gig’
instead of a ‘show’. This shows a more modern turn on the subject. I have
used my DPS article to address the audience as it is a relatable topic.
