1. HOW DID YOU ATTRACT/ADDRESS
YOUR AUDIENCE?
First of all I created a questionnaire using the
website surveymonkey.com. I wanted to find
out what my audience wanted from a music
magazine.
3. Audience Research
From my questionnaire I found:
The average age of people that I surveyed was 17.
The reasons people are most likely to buy a magazine is
because an artist they like is featured, the price is reason
able and the design is good.
The most popular genres are rock, electronic and hip hop.
Twitter, YouTube and Facebook are the most popular
websites used.
People like to read articles about artist’s or band’s
backstories or personal life and information about band’s or
artist’s tour dates or future albums.
4. How I used audience research to attract
my audience
I based the content of my
product on the information
gathered from my audience
research.
People said that they like will
buy a magazine if they like
the artist that is featured.
So I made sure that my
magazine had a lot of artists
featured in it and that the
artist’s names are on the
front cover to attract my
audience.
5. How I used audience research to attract
my audience
My audience said that a reasonable price is important when
deciding whether or not to buy a magazine. So of course I
made sure that my magazine’s price is reasonable at
£2.99.
This was also addressing my audience (young people)
because they may not always have a vast income and
therefore like things to be cheap.
6. How I used audience research to attract
my audience
People also said that a good design would be a reason for
them buying a magazine. Of course this was already an
important aspect in my eyes, but this made me realise how
key the design was in relation to attracting and addressing
the target audience.
I went for simplicity and sophistication. I think my audience
would like to see something easily understandable which
means minimalistic. Something that is stylish but not too ‘in
your face’ or with too much information, bright colour and
effects that are blatantly there to con the reader into buying
the product.
7. How I used audience research to address
my audience
Social media is a big part of
modern culture, especially with
my young target audience.
Which is why I chose to address
them through the use of the most
popular social networking sites.
I found that young my audience’s favourite genres are rock,
hip hop and electronic. So I focussed mainly on these genres
with GOODMUSIC.
8. How I used audience research to address
my audience
The results of the survey told
me that people are most
interested in information
about bands and artists such
as back stories, personal life
and future tour dates etc.
People also said they are
interested in posters and
competitions.
I took this into account when
thinking of cover lines for my
front cover and news and
features for my contents
page.
9. Front cover
To attract and address my target
audience I used an artist of a
similar age to them. Also she is
an artist that my audience would
like. The pose that she is in
connotates things like humour,
youth, freedom and unorthodox.
These are themes that will attract
my young audience and also
address their wants and needs
from a media product.
10. Front cover
The bold font and colour of red
used in the masthead symbolised
importance and professionalism.
I wanted to signify these
connotations when attracting my
audience so they would take the
magazine seriously and consider
it to be a legitimate purchasable
product. Therefore the magazine
will get a good reputation and
people will repeatedly buy it.
11. Double page spread
In the DPS article I addressed
the audience’s want and need for
backstories and information
about artists.
I also addressed the need for
simplicity that I felt was
necessary. As you can see the
layout of the DPS is minimalistic.
There is only text on the first
page which creates a feeling of
sophistication because pictures
or overcrowding is not needed to
convey the information.
12. Double page spread
Carrying on the simplistic theme
to the second page. I chose to
use two columns with the DPS
because it makes the page look
less crowded.
Again I addressed the
audience’s want for information
about artists by putting
information about the producer.
The audience like the fact that
they have more information
about the story behind the
artist.
