What do real audiences consume? 
The music industry in the present day 
The music industry continues to expand. Music is now 
developing and expanding into new markets which is attracting 
more users to digital music and bringing more artists to a wider 
global audience. In 2013 the music industry’s digital revenues 
increased by 4.3% which added up to US$5.9 billion. Unlike the 
music 10 years ago this modern music industry has found new 
ways to reach out into new markets meaning the music industry 
is bringing much more money shown by the statistic below. 
This is a statistic showing the Increase in per cent of the global digital revenue
Music Brands 
In the recent years of the music industry music Global brands 
have been introduced some popular brands such as Deezer and 
Spotify are feeling the benefits of the music industry 
development. Other regional services such as KKBOX and WiMP 
are continuing to bring expand and improve by attracting new 
users to their sites. New participants such as YouTube 
announced there plans to launch a brand new subscription 
service which is set to launch in early 2014. 
This is a statistic showing the percentage of people paying for music subscription
Budgets of music videos 
In the recent years of the music industry Passman has stated that 
most music videos now cost between $15,000 and $50,000 to 
create. This is a huge difference compared to the previous era 
when music videos would of cost much less to make. This is 
because there were less things which were needed in music 
videos for example the new equipment such as the green screen, 
different types of lighting, special effects. But in the previous era 
there wasn’t the use of green screens and the use of special 
effects so for back In the previous era this is why music videos 
cost less. This shows how much the music industry has changed 
because now music videos are going to much more extremes 
reaching out for more audiences.
Who are the specific audiences for 
particular products? 
The fans of the pop genre 
For the genre of pop the general main audience are 
boys and girls aged at 13 to 21. But on some 
occasions pop is also listened to people who are 
aged older. For the genre of pop it can be listened by 
anyone but for the people who are older they might 
not enjoy listening to pop songs because they might 
find it immature.
The fans of the pop genre 
In some pop music videos and songs there are scenes 
of a party going on and also sometimes the artists 
singing about parties. People of this age range can 
relate to this because people of that age tend to go 
to parties. Also people of this age tend to dress like 
some of the artists, shops like river island, Topman 
and H&M are well known shops because its where 
teenagers go to buy the latest's trends of fashion.
How do media industries target those 
audiences? 
In pop music videos the use of product placement is a 
method which music videos use to attract their 
audiences. This method is used because if viewers 
see these products then they might be interested so 
they might go out and buy the product this might 
also lead to them watching more music videos 
because they can see more products.
Relating to the age group 
With pop music videos the settings and also themes are 
parties. For a lot of people they can relate to this 
because they themselves have been to parties so 
showing a party through the use of a music video 
gives the chance for the people who have been or 
had a party to see one through the use of a music 
video so the artist and the viewer can relate.
