When?
The first music video was made on the 1st of August 1981 (12:01am)
Why?:
-Sells the song in a way that the audience can remember the song from a music video
-To provide a better understanding of the song so they engage with it both visually and
audibly
-To entertain the viewer by highlighting the talents of the artist
How is it different to a Tv programme?
-There are lots of different approaches to a music video it is just not only a narrative concept
Purpose of music videos & how can they be accessed?
-The purpose of music video is to help promote the artists image and their song they can now
be accessed through television, mobile apps and online e.g. YouTube
3. MTV
What is MTV?
-MTV is music television
When did it launch and What opportunities it created?
-It launched on the 1st of August 1981 and this allowed artists to showcase their music
videos as well as their songs
What did MTV help usher in and what does “you’ll never
look at music in the same way again” mean?
MTV helped usher in the pop culture and the quote tells us how music television changes
the way we consume music as we can now listen and watch music videos rather than just
the radio
4. MUSIC VIDEOS
How have MVs developed?
-Music videos have developed massively since the first release of ‘video killed the radio star’ to songs now
like ‘Blank Space’ by Taylor Swift as the artist now give the music videos a much higher production value,
more of a narrative, collaborations with other artists and now have post modern intertextual references
like in Lady Gaga’s song ‘Telephone’ where the car they use is a reference to the film Kill Bill.
What does it enable artist to do and how are viewed now compared to
1980s?
Music videos enable artists to promote their image and expand their popularity. In the 1980s it used to just
be music television but now we can use online sites like Vevo and YouTube
How have websites like Vevo and YouTube changed the way we
interact and view MV’s?
These websites have aloud us to have more control over what we want to watch and artist are aloud to
express themselves more freely as they have their own channels
5. ANDREW GOODWIN
-“sometimes music videos provide a visual pleasure for an audience that encourage
repeated viewing-we become familiar with the genre and therefore have expectations”
Andrew Goodwin quote has several layers of meaning to it interpret
it as music videos give a visual aid for the audience in which making
the audience more likely to re-watch the music video- therefore
through watching many music videos they now have they
knowledge of what type of aspects that go with the genre and now
have a better understanding of what to expect from each genre

-party rock
What did I enjoy about them?
-survival- Eminem's general performance is entertaining to watch
-Pursuit of happiness- the party theme of the video and slow motion
clips
