Social media platforms like verified artist accounts and user sharing are effective for marketing music videos by directly promoting to fans and new audiences. Releasing teasers also increases curiosity and views. YouTube is similarly useful as the world's second largest network, allowing artists their own pages for all content and subscriber notifications of new uploads. While magazines still market to dedicated fans, their reach is limited compared to Internet options. Billboard advertising in busy areas gets music seen by thousands daily but ads risk blending together. Music television channels have long played a role with dedicated programming appealing to target audiences.
2. Social Media Platforms:
Nowadays there are more and more social media apps/sites being created and this is making a considerable
difference within the music marketing industry! Due to the fact that many of the artists who create these
popular tracks have their very own ‘verified’ accounts on the social media apps they are able to directly post
links to their target audience and fans helping to promote their work increasing both views and sales. As well
as this, members of the public who have an account with these apps are able to then share and like these
videos which would allow the music to reach into new audiences that would never have necessarily listened
to them without the use of social media.
In addition, many artists tend to release teasers (short clips) of their songs/music videos to entice their
audience and to make sure that they are on the look out for their upcoming work. I personally think this is a
really effective method of increasing the views and sales because I infact find myself looking out for the new
songs once I have watched a teaser because I often become very curious as to what the final product is going
to look/sound like.
Overall, social media is a great way to market music as nowadays so many people are accessing and using
different social media platforms, and therefore there is always going to be a huge audience out there to look
at the product it just must be presented in a certain way to make it ‘different and appealing.’
3. YouTube:
The YouTube site was created in the year of 2005 and is the world’s second biggest networking site where
hundreds of videos are uploaded each and every day. YouTube has roughly over one billion users.
As individual artists/bands have their own personal accounts on YouTube this is usually where they
originally post their new music as not only is it easy for the public to access but all of their music and work
will be placed in one single place together making it easy accessible. Not only do artists choose to post their
music on YouTube for this reason, but also the reason that YouTube has a ‘subscribe’ feature allowing users
to supposedly subscribe to their favourite users and this means that they will always be notified when that
user posts any content on YouTube, meaning that many fans will choose to subscribe to their favourite
artists in an attempt to support them.
YouTube has been shown to be a highly successful method of marketing music with music sales increasing by
just over 30% which is a considerable amount.
4. Music Magazines:
Some pre existing music magazines have been known to be considerably successful in marketing music such
as the magazine's: Q, Billboard and NME. As well as these more popular magazines, magazines such as Top of
the Pops which are directed at a younger audience have pages dedicated to advertising new music and
artists in the hope to increase sales for their songs/albums.However, a limitation of using music magazines to
market music is that they only have a limited audience, as there is a much smaller amount of people who are
interested in buying music as most people now would prefer to find the same information on the Internet as
it would cost them less and would probably be more practical if they have access to a smartphone, laptop or
tablet.
I believe that magazines are a whole lot more successful in promoting older music for those more ‘traditional’
people who would prefer to actually buy or collect a certain brand of magazine and have the
advertisements/posters in a paper format for them to keep and look back on in the future. These people
would also most likely be quite dedicated fans to a particular artist.
5. Billboards:
Billboard advertising is more of a prominent method in bigger popular locations, such as capital cities like
London and Paris as locations like these have a large amount of people passing through them each day as
they are two examples of popular tourist attractions. London is a very busy place, and has multiple
advertisements placed around the city with small posters on the sides of telephone boxes, to bigger posters
in the windows of shops/on the side of buildings, to extremely large advertisements on the sides on buses.
These adverts are seen by thousands of people every single day as they are always put in the most obvious
places so we therefore have no other choice but to be presented with them and have a look.
However, due to the large amounts of billboards around, there is only quite a small possibility of your
particular advert standing out against the others as nowadays they all just merge together and many people
tend to lose interest in them. Smaller posters could actually be seen as a better method as they tend to look
less intimidating and would possibly intrigue more people into looking at them.
6. Music Television:
Music Television channels such as MTV, Kerrang and 4 Music have been around for a long time now and
these channels have infact played a large role in the marketing of music, with MTV being one of the first
channels launched in the year 1981. By these channels playing a wide variety of different songs they were
open for large audiences who also would’ve been presented with the advertisements.
Another good way that music television entices certain target audiences is by having features such as ‘theme
hours’ where the channel will dedicated maybe an hour of the show to play songs just by either one
artist/band or genre, which would also enable advertisements to be aimed at the correct audiences, which is
a very tactical way of advertising music.
