Audience research
1. • Industry Audience Research
• 2016 proved a very successful year for the recording music industry. The market grew by 5.9%, which is
the fastest rate of growth since IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry0 began
tracking 20 years ago. The success for the recording industry's global revenues came from a number of
revenue streams; the largest being digital sales at 50%, 34% physical format sales, 14% from
performance rights and the smallest coming from synchronisation revenues at 2%. Digital revenues
alone - sales of music through digital platforms like iTunes and Spotify - grew by 17.7% to $7.8 billion.
The music industry is still growing.
• Pop music seems to be the most popular genre of the charts at the moment - examples being; Taylor
Swift's 'Ready for It' and Charlie Puth's 'Attention' reaching top 10 spots. Also, genres like hip hop make
up a majority of the top 10 aswell. DJ Khaled's banger featuring Rihanna and Bryson Tiller; 'Wild
Thoughts' making the top 6. But also, Logic's '1-800-273-8255' making it top 5. It seems that Pop and
Hip Hop have been the most popular genres in recent times, sometimes it's hard to tell the difference
between the two. Most of the artists who have managed to make it onto the top 10 Billboard have
created a unique personality to suit their music. For example, would've 'Wild Thoughts' have ever been
as successful as it is without Rihanna? A very well known Model/ Actor / Singer who many teenagers
have looked up to as a role model. Her bold personality among her fanbase has caused the song to
up on the charts. Another example of this is Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee's; 'Despacito'. If Justin Bieber
not a feature among this song, would it still have been as successful? Justin Bieber has already made a
called 'image' to his audience. Many people look up to Justin Bieber and he has one of the largest fan
bases for a singer in this day and age - therefore they listen and like the song that he is featured in.
2. Donald Passman wrote a book called All You Need To Know About the
Music Business. In the book he stated that most music videos now cost
between $15,000 and $50,000. This has definitely changed from past
eras of music videos.
In 2010, the average studio music video budget for a well-known artist
was around $200,000 - $500,000. However in the past, this amount of
money was never thought to be used for a music video, or a
'promotional film' as they called it in the 70's. During late 1972–73
David Bowie featured in a series of promotional films directed by pop
photographer Mick Rock, who worked extensively with Bowie in this
period. During their time together they directed and produced the
clips for "John, I'm Only Dancing" and "Jean Genie", which together
only cost $550. Nowadays, a small production for a music video will
cost at least $1,000 - $5,000 - according to recent research.
3. The Ed Sheeran Target Audience
Ed Sheeran's target audience consists of majority male and female youth,
within a typical age range if 14 - 24. Although, the age range of the target audience
is not restricted due to different people's preferences and the range of different
styles and genres that Ed produces. Most of his fanbase are based online with Ed
having over 20 million followers, the 77th most followed account on the website.
This allows him to connect personally with his audience, improving his star image.
4. • One example of when Ed used this audience to preview new music is
just before he released 'Shape of You'. He simply posted a little video
of himself holding up a sign saying 'New music coming Friday!!'. This
video went viral on twitter in a number of hours, fuelled with
excitement from young Ed Sheeran fan's wanting his new music. This
overall boosted his star image due to the quirky way he announced
his new music and sent millions of his fans into meltdown with a 2
second video.

6. Audience Research
I created a Survey Monkey for
the type of music videos that my
target audience like the most. I
featured questions like what they
like the most about music videos
and what type of music videos
they enjoy the most.
My target audience is between
the age ranges of 15 and 25
which is also the age range of
the people that I sent this survey
to. Therefore the answers from
this survey will give me an idea
on the type of music videos that
my audience typically likes the
most.
7. • In this question, I wanted to know what type of music video my target
audience enjoy. I featured a 'narrative' type music video; which
features a story line within the music video. I also featured a
'performative based' type music video; which is where the music
video consists of the artist or artists performing on a stage or at a
concert. There is also an option for a mix of both for people that are
interested in both of these types of music videos. The 'Narrative'
option got the most votes which clearly shows that most of my
audience prefer a story line to a music video. However, a mix of both
also got a lot of votes so maybe in our music video we can feature our
artist performing some of the song and the rest should be narrative
driven. This will please most of my audience.

9. • In this question I got my audience to watch three different music
videos, all of them unique in one way. The most upvotes went to both
Rudimental's 'Not Giving In' and Kendrick Lamar's 'DNA'. Rudimental's
music video is narrative driven, whereas Kendrick Lamar's is very
performative based as it does feature the artist rapping the song. This
tells me that my audience prefer a music video where it features both
a storyline and also the artist performing the song. As said in question
1, I can implement both types of music videos into my video as this
seems the most popular mix.
10.
11. I then asked my audience for the reason why the video they chose seemed the most effective. Most of my audience believe that the use of editing is the
reason why their chosen video is the most effective in sending a message across to the audience. As this is the feature that most of my audience look out
for in a video, I can prioritise editing to be one of the main attractions of the video. I can do this through the use of different transitions, visual effects and
fast or slow paced editing. I can use my inspiration from my director's study post to make this happen.
The second most upvoted option was the use of setting and lighting. For our music video these two options are important to us. The locations of our shots
are very important at sending different messages to the audience and the lighting can be used to emphasise emotion.
n this queston I asked a general question on what my target audience favourite genre of music is. My audience seem to have a very wide
variety of different genres that they prefer. Which is good as I can have more choice to which genre to choose for my music video. Most of my
audience said they prefer the hip-hop genre the most, however, I think a pop genre music video will be easier to create. This is because the
hip-hop genre usually produces unconventional music videos and I feel like Pop music tends to focus more on the conventional side of music
videos. Plus our main objective for this project is to create a conventional music video.
