Patriarchy In The Canterbury Tales
Chaucer has mastered the techniques required to skilfully put his points across and subtle irony and
satire is particularly effective in making a point, (Sheppard). As written by this college professor,
Chaucer is very effective in using comedy, and satire, to casually attack sacred ideals of his time.
Chaucer carefully uses his characters to battle common ideals, such as his use of the Wife of Bath to
pick on patriarchy. In his Canterbury Tales, Chaucer begins with a general prologue where all
characters are introduced, including a few who don t quite fit the mold of holy . In the Pardoner s Tale,
Chaucer speaks through him and brings the hypocrisy of the church into the light. Chaucer uses his
writing of Canterbury Tales to attack two major idea s of his time, including the idea of men being
superior to women and the purity of the church. In Chaucer s day society was built on patriarchy, but
Chaucer uses Canterbury Tales to voice his radical ideals. A few of these radical ideas come to the
surface in the Wife of Bath s prologue. When the woman stands before the group and speaks about
herself, she reveals a side of Chaucer that is a threat to society. As the Wife speaks she tells the
pilgrims how she believes that women run the world, and how men are the inferior sex. The Wife tells
her audience in her prologue, And when I d mastered him, and out of deadlock secured myself the
sovereignty in wedlock, (p.129 lines 517 518). This line tells her listeners that she mastered her
husband and gained control of the household. The idea of a woman having control of anything in that

Dewey s unorthodox teaching methods cut against the grain of traditional schooling, which makes him
an excellent, well qualified teacher to instruct others in the unschooling movement. I had previously
argued his moral character is beyond repair, and how he goes about scheming through the film to
achieve his own ends is sociopathic. I am going to look beyond that and analyze how he would make a
good unschooling teacher. The lesson I took from the movie that I will be presenting is that this film

As I have stated before this is the counterargument to unschooling lacking social skills. Students are
learning how to be social through actively doing and working together on a goal. By the end of the
film, the children seem more socialized and unified then they were before Dewey graced their
presence.
Whether or not Dewey is based on Paul Green, which still remains debatable, he epitomizes a great
unschooling teacher. The old chicken and egg question can be applied to the film and the real life
School of Rock, and they are definitely interrelated.
The fact is that the culmination of the School of Rock has become a example actually providing
opportunities for young musicians to become Rock Stars. The film has its happy ending and Dewey s
afterschool business takes off. Meanwhile, the real life School of Rock provides opportunities to those
just looking for their outlet. The real lesson is that it challenges the students to learn the skills they
will actually use.

Kincaid, being from the two Caribbean island of Antigua and Barbuda, is basically Caribbean. Which
could give the story more of a different feel, depending on where it takes place. Being raised in a
Caribbean household, and having mostly Caribbean friends, I was widely exposed to this lifestyle. The
parents were harsher towards their children, when punishing or giving lectures. Another point which
gives hint to the Caribbean viewpoint is the phrase that comes up in the story. Which says but I don t
sing benna on Sundays at all and never in Sunday school. Two point of views come out of this, one
