Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is a sudden, progressive lung disease characterized by acute lung inflammation and diffuse injury to the alveolar-capillary membrane. It is caused by lung insults like bacteria, trauma, or other medical conditions. Early signs include rapid, shallow breathing and hypoxemia. Treatment goals are respiratory support, treating the underlying cause, and preventing complications. Management involves mechanical ventilation with positive end-expiratory pressure, sedatives, and treating any shock or infection.
