Work Ethics
And
Anti-Bullying
What is bullying?
• Bullying is deliberate – harming another colleague intentionally
• Bullying involves a misuse of power in a relationship
• Bullying is usually not a one-off – it is repeated or has the potential to be
repeated over time
• Bullying involves behavior that can cause harm
Is bullying harmful?
• Bullying can lead to increased stress levels, decreased emotional
wellbeing, reduced coping strategies, lower work performance and
disruptive work places
• Bullying can negatively impact the entire workforce and result in a
hostile work environment
• Bullying harms the person being bullied, the person doing the
bullying and can also harm those who witness it (bystanders)
Why do some people
get bullied?
There is never a good reason
for bullying. But, we know
people are more likely to get
bullied if they seem different to
their peers in any way. This
includes:
 Being clever or popular
 Race
 Sexuality
 Gender identity
 Religion
 Disabilities and abilities
 Weight and height
Why do some people bully others?
Just as there are many reasons someone might experience
bullying, there are also many reasons why someone might
bully someone else:
 They feel unhappy
 They have been the target to bullying themselves
 They want to feel important or powerful
 They don’t realize how their behavior harms others
 They believe being different is a bad thing
Labelling someone who bullies as a “bad person” isn’t right or
helpful. While the bullying behavior isn’t okay, someone who
bullies others often needs our help and support too!
Help and support is available if you
need them:
 Free counselling services
 Citizens Advice Bureau
 Church
 Community group
 Friends
 Family
 Talk to a co-worker
 Deal with the issues early – Sometimes the issue can be as simple as communication issues or personality
clashes, if this is the case then talk it out, you might be surprised how communication can resolve an issue.
 Speak to your manager – Raise your concerns with your manager, Managers will be able to deal with your
issue confidentially
 Speak to HR – If you aren’t confident enough to speak to your manager or the issues lie with your manager
then call Vicki Barratt(Human Resources) on 027 559 2327 for a confidential conversation.
 Informal complaint form – Fill out an informal complaint form and send to HR, this issue will be dealt with
informally in the form of a casual chat with HR to assess whether the complaint needs to be escalated or not.
 Formal complaint – Fill out a Formal complaint form and send to HR, these complaints will be investigated
thoroughly and may result in disciplinary action.
 These forms are available from your office with a postage paid envelope.
What can you do if you are being bullied or are a bystander.
Work ethics
What does it mean?
Work ethics include not only how we feel about
our job or career, but also how we do our job and
handle our responsibilities. This involves
attitude, behavior, respect, communication and
interaction, also characteristics such as honesty
and accountability. Work ethics demonstrate
many things about who and how a person is.
Positive work ethics
 To follow all company policies and procedures completely
 Honest
 Dependable
 Loyal
 Efficient
 Modest
 Enthusiastic
 Positive attitude
 Your attitude is a form of expression of
yourself
 A positive attitude helps you cope better
under stressful situations at work
 A negative attitude in the workplace
creates an atmosphere of distrust among
employees and causes employees to
attempt to achieve success at the expense
of each other.
 A positive attitude at work is beneficial
to you and your TEAM
