Temperature Distribution and 
Heat Flux of a Furnace

CONDUCTION
CONVECTION
RADIATION
Given Data: 
• Outer Wall, 300 x 300 
• Inner Wall , 120 x 120 
• Furnace opening , 100x 100 
• Kc= 0.01 W/mK, thermal conductivity of the concrete wall (Mat’l No. 
1) 
• Kb=0.0057 W/mK, thermal conductivity of the brick wall (Material 
No.2) 
• T=673 K temp within the furnace 
• K1= 0.208 W/m2K, convection heat transfer coefficient in the furnace 
• Ta= 253 K temperature of the surrounding air, where the outside wall 
is exposed to. 
• K2=0.068 W/m2K, convection heat transfer coefficient of the outside 
wall and the surrounding air
Define Element types
Thermal conductivity for material No.1
Thermal conductivity for Material No. 2 
Click Material (pull down menu), then 
New Model
Modeling of a Furnace
Outline of Brick and Concrete Wall
Define Mesh Size Controls
Glue the areas, after performing mesh size 
controls,
Before meshing is done, it is 
necessary to specify material 
numbers for the 
concrete and the brick walls. 
From ANSYS Main Menu select 
Preprocessor →Meshing →Mesh 
Attributes→ Picked Areas.
Specify Material Numbers for the 
Concrete(1) and Brick (2) Walls
Material Number for Concrete Wall 
Preprocessor >Meshing>Mesh Attribute>Pick Areas
Material Number for Brick Wall
After defining the two areas, we can now Mesh the area., free
Be sure material numbering is ON, in 
Plot Controls ,Numbering, Attribute 
Numbering, Material Number
