Alfred Hitchcock s Rear Window is a voyeuristic point of view (POV) style of filming. The point
of view captures the intimate details of the neighbors lives through the view of Jimmy Stewarts
character L. B. Jefferies (Jeff). Hitchcock set the tone for movies of the POV style. There are
many films today that have used the same POV techniques, such as 2007 s Disturbia, directed by

As technology has progressed exponentially, there have been lots of contributions made in the
medical world. One significant contribution is no other than the advancement of artificial limbs.
Artificial limbs augment the abilities of amputees and other patients with malformed body parts,
lost due to trauma and injuries, or never formed due to congenital defect complications. Currently,
there are approximately two million people living with limb loss just in the United States alone.
Out of the two million people suffering with limb losses, 82% of them are secondary to vascular
diseases, 16% are secondary to trauma related injuries, 11% are secondary to cancers, and the last

improve, lighter and more durable prosthetic limbs are becoming available. But this may not
decrease the cost of the limb base on how the economy works. The cost for artificial limbs varies
depending on the parts one needs and whether or not one has insurance. For patients with
insurance, the out of pocket costs should be around 10% 50%. The cost for artificial limbs also
depends on the patient s amputation level, condition and needs. If the patient has a higher level
of needs then the insurance would be more likely to pay for a higher percentage of cost or

In December of 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, tearing through the levee systems,
and resulting in massive flooding that eventually covered 80% of New Orleans (1), leading to the
most significant number of deaths by the storm. As images of Hurricane Katrina were displayed
on front pages and television sets across the counry, Katrina became a strategic research site for
sociological theory and research of how identity shapes a natural disaster(1). In this essay, I want to
explore the fate of New Orleans. How will climate change affect human populations and which
human populations will it affect? To do this, I will need to review both scientific and socially
scientific papers to understand what the future of New Orleans and southern Louisianawill look
like. Though this concept is technically broad for the limitations of this paper, I will review
several pieces of literature to begin to gain an understanding of the social and ecological situations
at play.

constructed to celebrate Columbus arrival in the New World. Chicago was known as the White
City, but did not appear as pure and spotless as its name suggested. For instance, there were many
ways one could get killed. Fire took a dozen lives a day...There was diphtheria, typhus, cholera,

affected the city of Chicago. The Panic s effects included financial crises , bankruptcy , and high

GLAAD was formerly known as the Gay Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.[i] It was
founded in New York City in 1985 by Vito Russo, Jewelle Gomez and George Kolovakos.[ii]
GLAAD is a media monitoring agency that seeks to promote and protect issues affecting the
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community.
The organization was originally founded in response to the New York Post s homophobic and
defamatory coverage of the AIDS epidemic, which was at its height in the 1980 s. Initially,
AIDS was closely linked with gay men within the American psychology.[iii] The first time that
AIDS was detected in the United States was in 1981, when groups of men in New York and
Los Angeles were diagnosed with Kaposi s sarcoma and pneumocystis pneumonia.[iv] The
media had labeled it as a gay disease. Based upon the statistics compiled by the Center for
Disease Control, the AIDS virus disproportionately impacted gay men at a time when
Americans had an extremely negative attitude towards homosexuality. [I]t was perhaps
inevitable that AIDS would be defined in political and cultural terms as well as medically, and
that many heterosexuals reactions to AIDS would reflect their attitudes toward

Every day social order is taken for granted. Social order is related to social realities, which are
shared expectations about a chain of events, the types of people involved and associated
behaviors and feelings (O Brien, 2011). It is not until someone violates these realities and
interactional routines that they recognize the difference and become aware. For this reason,
during the 1950s, Harold Garfinkel developed the breaching experiment; a breaching experiment
is an activity used in social science to breach or violate common, taken for granted understandings
and practices of everyday life in order to better understand it. This showed that reality
maintenance requires a lot of interactional work. The objective of a breaching experiment is to
disrupt normal procedures so that the process by which everyday life is constructed or

watching the lives of his neighbors. Jeffries becomes increasing interested in the lives of his
neighbors as each day goes by. One rainy night, Jeffries sees one of his neighbors, Lars
Thorwald, leave and come back to his apartment a couple of times which raises his suspicion.
Following the night Jefferies also sees that Lars got a knife and a small saw. Jeffries also notices
that Lars s sickly wife is now missing too and suspects that Lars murdered his wife. At first, both
Jeffries girlfriend Lisa and his nurse Stella are skeptical of his theory but come around when they
both see more event unfold in front of them. Lisa comes up with a dangerous plan to break into

Government s nutritional guidelines. The contention of Fat Head is that the U.S Government and

The refuting of Spurlock s criticism of McDonald s is also shown in the scene, where Naughton
requests for Spurlock s food log. In this segment, where there is on screen text accounting the
number of hanged up calls, the audience is positioned to believe that Naughton has been refused
repetitively by the representatives of Super Size Me. From this, viewers are given the
impression that Spurlock is a liar, as Spurlock is unwilling to provide Naughton the food log.
While Spurlock is mentioned, but he himself is not given the opportunity to put forward his point
of view. Nowhere in this scene do viewers hear Spurlock s refusal, or the actual conversation
between the agents of Super Size Me and Naughton. It is clear from this scene that Fat Head is one
sided.
Another instance in Fat Head that effectively portrays Spurlock negatively is through the director s
body language while criticising Super Size Me. Much of the time, Naughton has his hands on his
hips with his eyebrows synclined. This gesture connotes anger. Viewers perceive through Naughton
s aggression that the information addresses in Super Size Me is mendacious, readily accepting
Naughton s invited reading. Moreover, the employment of the camera at medium, eye level shot is
to enable viewers to feel as though they are interacting with the real Tom Naughton. This sense of
closeness makes his intended message more convincing.
