Android is a mobile operating system developed by Google, based on the Linux kernel and designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Android's user interface is mainly based on direct manipulation, using touch gestures that loosely correspond to real-world actions, such as swiping, tapping and pinching, to manipulate on-screen objects, along with a virtual keyboard for text input. In addition to touchscreen devices, Google has further developed Android TV for televisions, Android Auto for cars, and Android Wear for wrist watches, each with a specialized user interface. Variants of Android are also used on notebooks, game consoles, digital cameras, and other electronics.

1.ANDROID
2.INTRODUCTION
Android is a Linux-based operating system designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers.
Initially developed by Android, Inc., which Google backed financially and later bought in 2005, Android was unveiled in 2007 along with the founding of the Open Handset Alliance: a consortium of hardware, software, and telecommunication companies devoted to advancing open standards for mobile devices. The first Android-powered phone was sold in October 2008.
3.ARCHITECTURE
4.Android consists of a kernel based on Linux kernel version 2.6 and, from Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich onwards, version 3.x, with middleware, libraries and APIs written in C, and application software running on an application framework which includes Java-compatible libraries based on Apache Harmony.
Android uses the Dalvik virtual machine with just-in-time compilation to run Dalvik 'dex-code' (Dalvik Executable), which is usually translated from Java bytecode. The main hardware platform for Android is the ARM architecture.
5.APPLICATIONS
Android has a growing selection of third party applications, which can be acquired by users either through an app store such as Google Play or the Amazon Appstore, or by downloading and installing the application's APK file from a third-party site.
The Play Store application allows users to browse, download and update apps published by Google and third-party developers, and is pre-installed on devices that comply with Google's compatibility requirements.
6.APPLICATIONS
The app filters the list of available applications to those that are compatible with the user's device, and developers may restrict their applications to particular carriers or countries for business reasons. Purchases of unwanted applications can be refunded within 15 minutes of the time of download, and some carriers offer direct carrier billing for Google Play application purchases, where the cost of the application is added to the user's monthly bill.
As of September 2012, there were more than 675,000 apps available for Android, and the estimated number of applications downloaded from the Play Store was 25 billion.
7.SECURITY & PRIVACY
Android applications run in a sandbox, an isolated area of the system that does not have access to the rest of the system's resources, unless access permissions are explicitly granted by the user when the application is installed. Before installing an application, the Play Store displays all required permissions: a game may need to enable vibration or save data to an SD card, for example, but should not need to read SMS messages or access the phonebook. After reviewing these permissions, the user can choose to accept or refuse them, installing the application only if they accept.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

3. Introduction of Android OS
Android is a Linux-based operating system and software
platform for smart phones, tablets and now smartwatches
(Android Wear).
Android is one of the most widely used mobile OS these
days. It is a powerful operating system supporting a large
number of applications.
Android applications are written in java and C programming
language. There are around 13,00,000 applications available
for Android.
In such a short span of time the growth of android market is
fabulous. The ease of use coupled with the convenience and
entertainment factor have been key features of this
technology
4. Introduction of Android OS
Android devices comes in all kinds of sizes,
features and prices. Each version of android is
named after a desert, and the most recent being
the Android 4.4 KitKat.
Millions of people use Android because it’s so
powerful yet so easy to use. The home screen,
applications, widgets all are simple to use right out
of the box, but completely customizable. With
Android you can create a unique mobile
experience that’s just right for you.
5. History of Android OS
• Android was founded by a company, named Android Inc. in Palo
Alto of California, U.S. in 2003 whose founder was Andy Rubin.
• Early intentions of the company was to develop an advanced
operating system for digital cameras, but then it was realised that
market for such devices was not large enough so they diverted
their attention to producing a Smartphone operating system.
• Android was then acquired by the Google in 2005 for US50 million
$ and unveiled its distribution in 2007 with formation of Open
Handset Alliance led by Google.
• The first commercially available phone to run Android was the HTC
Dream, released on October 22, 2008 With Android Version 1.0
6. Open Handset Alliance (OHA)
The Open Handset Alliance (OHA) is a group of companies
Which are allowed to use source code of Android and
develop applications.
The OHA was established on 6 November 2007, led by
Google with 47 members including mobile handset makers,
application developers and chip makers.
In OHA group companies are allowed to use source code of
Android and develop applications according to the needs of
customers.
Major group members of OHA group is Google , HTC, Sony,
Dell , Intel, Samsung, Nvidia, LG etc.
7. Revolution in Mobile Experience
• Before invention of mobile OS, only technological device that
required an operating system was a personal computer. Initially it
was just one or two high-end mobile phones that ran on operating
systems, but with the success of those particular models, more
models started using Smartphone operating systems.
• One Smartphone operating system that has truly revolutionized
the whole idea of a mobile phone is Android. The first mobile
phone to run on android OS was ‘HTC DREAM’. After the
success of Android based HTC(Dream), more and more
Smartphone manufacturers joined the android project and the
members of the Open Handset Alliance (OHA) increased. This
resulted in Android becoming the most widely used Smartphone
OS in the market.
8. Revolution in Mobile Experience
• The open source and flexible nature of Android allows the
developers and device manufacturers to modify the software
according to their needs, As a result of this constant
development and innovation, Android has been adapted to work
on technological devices other than smart phones.
• Android devices are much more cost effective than its rivals and
offer a more stimulating and fulfilling user experience, thus,
making Android the most preferred choice by users.
• Android has become the core operating systems of many other
devices like Smart books , Wristwatches , Car, CD/DVD players
, Camera and other devices
9. Features of Android OS
Android supports wireless communication using
3G Networks
4G Networks
802.11 Wi-Fi Networks
Bluetooth Connectivity
Android runs on many devices of different companies which
are member of OHA.
User gets millions of applications for free that any other OS
users cannot get.
Interface that is better then the previous touch screen
mobiles.
10. Features of Android OS
Multitasking , Multi-touch , Modern web browser , Smart

14. Android L
• It is the upcoming android OS and the successor to the
Android 4.4 (kitkat). It was unveiled on June 2014. It’s
developer’s preview has already been released for nexus
devices and the final completely developed ‘Android L’ is
expected to be release in late 2014.
• The most prominent changes to Android L includes a
redesigned user interface, and improvements to the
notification system which allows them to be accessed through
the lock screen and displayed within apps as banners at the
top of the screen. According to Google, it has been designed
to manage memory (RAM) to keep the power consumption at
minimum, so more battery.
15. Android Rooting
Android Rooting is the process of allowing users of devices
running Android OS to attain privileged control, also known
as root access, of their android system.
It is performed with the goal of overcoming limitations that
manufacturers put on their devices, resulting in the ability to
replace device’s operating system or perform other
operations that are otherwise inaccessible to a normal
android user.
Many manufacturers have tried to make “unrootable” devices
with harsher protections but they are usually still rootable in
some way. There may be no root available for a new device,
but one is usually available in a few weeks.

17. Limitations of Android OS
Android requires an active internet connection. At least there
should be a GPRS internet connection so that the device is
ready to go online according to our needs.
Application in the Android phones can easily be obtained and
for free, but the consequences in each of these applications,
will always be ads on display, either the top or bottom of the
application.
Android operating system has a lot of "process" running in the
background that lead to the quick battery drains.
Making source code available to everyone inevitably invites
the attention of hackers and less secure than other mobile
OS.
18. Fact & Figure about Android OS
Android powers hundreds of millions of mobile devices in more than
190 countries around the world.
Every day more than 1 million new Android devices are activated
worldwide.
Android accounts for 85% of the Worldwide Smartphone OS Market
as of July 2014.
It's the largest installed base of any mobile platform and growing
fast—every day another million users power up their Android devices
for the first time and start looking for apps, games, and other digital
content.
Android users download more than 1.5 billion apps and games from
Google Play each month.
Android is launching all the versions in the alphabetical order.
The primary source of income from Android for Google is only mobile
19. Fact & Figure about Android OS
Android was about to close. After the company was founded,
it became difficult for the founder to keep it floating and to
carry out daily business operations. Steve Perlman, a friend
of Andy Rubin, saved the company by infusing much needed
funds.
Microsoft considered it a very underrated project and they
thought that android cannot make a big hit.
The logo of android was inspired from a character of 1990’s
game called ‘Gauntlet - The Third Encounter’.
Android space- in 2010 a British satellite firm launched a
nexus S into space which controls satellite and collects
information.
20. Future Scope of Android OS
Customers are always demanding something new and
innovative. That’s the reason all companies are shifting from
those boring phones to much more interesting android phones
with lots of new exclusive content.
Google will launch another version of Android that starts with
‘L’ because Google launches all its android versions in the
alphabetical order with upgraded and new features.
More future development of smart watches, digital cameras
and other devices with Android OS. There are chances of
Android becoming the widely used operating system in world in
almost every kind of technology.
Mobile Apps development industries are considering Android
Application Development as one of the best remunerative
business opportunities.
21. Future Scope of Android OS
Android introduced some innovative and new features
with every new version and try to overcome it’s
drawback in previous version.
Many companies are now working just on developing
android based applications.
There has been an unexpected rise in the demands of
the android developers and this demand is expected to
increase in future.
Future of android is beyond imagination. There seems
to be no end to evolving new applications and mobiles
using android technology.
