The heart has four chambers. The two superior receiving chambers are the atria (= entry halls or chambers), and the two inferior pumping chambers are the ventricles (= little bellies).

Estas diretrizes visam melhorar a qualidade dos cuidados pós-natais essenciais e de rotina prestados às mulheres e aos recém-nascidos, com o objetivo final de melhorar a saúde e o bem-estar materno e neonatal.
Uma “experiência pós-natal positiva” é um resultado importante para todas as mulheres que dão à luz e para os seus recém-nascidos, estabelecendo as bases para a melhoria da saúde e do bem-estar a curto e longo prazo. Uma experiência pós-natal positiva é definida como aquela em que as mulheres, pessoas que gestam, os recém-nascidos, os casais, os pais, os cuidadores e as famílias recebem informação consistente, garantia e apoio de profissionais de saúde motivados; e onde um sistema de saúde flexível e com recursos reconheça as necessidades das mulheres e dos bebês e respeite o seu contexto cultural.
Estas diretrizes consolidadas apresentam algumas recomendações novas e já bem fundamentadas sobre cuidados pós-natais de rotina para mulheres e neonatos que recebem cuidados no pós-parto em unidades de saúde ou na comunidade, independentemente dos recursos disponíveis.
É fornecido um conjunto abrangente de recomendações para cuidados durante o período puerperal, com ênfase nos cuidados essenciais que todas as mulheres e recém-nascidos devem receber, e com a devida atenção à qualidade dos cuidados; isto é, a entrega e a experiência do cuidado recebido. Estas diretrizes atualizam e ampliam as recomendações da OMS de 2014 sobre cuidados pós-natais da mãe e do recém-nascido e complementam as atuais diretrizes da OMS sobre a gestão de complicações pós-natais.
O estabelecimento da amamentação e o manejo das principais intercorrências é contemplada.

3. The Heart
A hollow muscular organ that pumps the
blood through the circulatory system by
rhythmic contraction and dilation. In
vertebrates there may be up to four
chambers (as in humans), with two atria
and two ventricles.
4. Size of Heart
• The heart is relatively small, roughly the same
size (but not the same shape) as your closed
fist.
• It is about 12 cm long, 9 cm wide at its
broadest point, and 6 cm thick.
• It has an average mass of 250 to 300 grams.
5. Location of Heart
• The heart rests on the diaphragm, near the
midline of the thoracic cavity.
• Heart lies in the thoracic cavity in the
mediastinum and between the lungs.
• It lies obliquely, a little more (about 2/3) to
left than the right.
• Present a base above and apex below
6. Organ Associated With The Heart
• Inferiorly:
• The apex rest on the central tendon of the diaphragm.
• Superiorly:
• The great blood vessel aorta is located.
• Posteriorly:
• Esophagus, Trachea, Left and Right
bronchioles, Descending Aorta.
• Laterally:
• Lungs
• Anteriorly:
• Sternum, Ribs, Inter costal muscles.
7. Pericardium
• The membrane that surrounds and protects
the heart is the pericardium.
• It confines the heart to its position in the
mediastinum, while allowing sufficient
freedom of movement for vigorous and rapid
contraction.
• It consists of two main parts:
– Fibrous pericardium
– Serous pericardium
8. Layers of the Heart Wall
• The wall of the heart consists of three layers
– the epicardium (external layer)
– the myocardium (middle layer)
– the endocardium (inner layer).
• The epicardium is composed of two tissue layers.
The outermost, as you just learned, is called the
visceral layer of the serous pericardium.
• The middle myocardium is composed of cardiac
muscle tissue. It makes up approximately 95% of
the heart wall.
• The innermost endocardium is a thin layer of
endothelium overlying a thin layer of connective
tissue.
