Desmond Doss My Hero
In May 1945, soldiers scaled a 400 foot cliff onto a plain that had been torn by war. Almost
immediately, they were bombarded by enemy fire and bombs. In a very short time, over many men
had fallen and the leader ordered the men to retreat and take cover. All the remaining soldiers dashed
back to safety. Only one man refused to take cover. That man was Desmond Doss. Doss remained and
was determined to bring back as many men as possible. All through the night, he kept moving around
and rescuing more and more men. In the morning, more than seventy five men had been saved. Doss
was a Seventh Day Adventist with strong beliefs in God. His childhood taught him to never kill. When
World War II arrived, he enlisted in the army. However, he refused to carry a gun into battle and kill
others. As a result of his actions, he became the first conscientious objector to receive the Medal of
Honor and inspired many to be self sacrificing. He is my hero because he put others before himself.
Doss behaved heroically, had great character traits, and overcame his adversities, and therefore, he had
the qualities to be my hero.
Doss had the qualities of a hero because of his great actions such as saving men and putting others
before himself. He was a combat medic during World War II and saved many men. During the Battle
of Okinawa, Doss and his company were told to assault and take Hacksaw Ridge, one major cliff on
the island of Okinawa. The company scaled the cliff and began to fight. However,

Free Living in Fitzgerald´s Echoes of the Jazz Age Essay
Fitzgerald does not associate the Jazz Age with jazz music, but he does associate it with free going
men and women. Fitzgerald believes that the Jazz Age was a was a time of no care and living life to
the fullest. He says wherefore eat, drink, drink and be merry, for to morrow we die (16). This is
showing that the people of the Jazz Age did not care what happened tomorrow as long as they lived
today to its fullest. When he says that something had to be done with all the nervous energy stored up
and unexpended in the War, (13) he shows why people were so free going. Fitzgerald is saying that
people did not know if there was going to be another war or if when they were going to die, so they
had to live life today and not wait for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When he says great filling stations full of money he is talking about how people could get as much
credit as they wanted without really worrying about paying it back. People spent a lot of money with
no regrets or any worries of paying it back or how much they were actually spending. When Fitzgerald
says Even when you were broke you didn t worry about money, because it was in such profusion
around you (21), he is saying that even when you were poor you could always find some money to
help you out of a tough situation. You could always count on someone helping you because there was
so much money around you. It was possible for someone to have a bad job and still live a large life.
Someone could use make little to no money but then use credit to live large. They could either could
pay with credit or just use someone elses money to have fun and live a fun life. This is what
Fitzgerald says that this is one of the reasons for the Great Depression, people couldn t pay off their
share of credit.
Fitzgerald see the reactions to the events in 1919 as a landmark and a new way of life and thought.
When the news of the Harding and the Ohio Gang or Sacco and Vanzetti scandal were released by the
news people s idealism flared up (14). People did not believe that the government was dealing with
the situation in the correct way and believed that they could show the government by going against
them. The government had made bad decissios in the Sacco

The Importance Of Kneeling During The National Anthem
It has been a custom of all citizens, including professional athletes, to stand and remove their hats
during the National Anthem since 1931. Although as of late, in an obscure manner of protest, many
athletes and now fans have been kneeling during the National Anthem. Perhaps no group has more
influence of the general public than professional athletes, which has been clearly documented as of
late. All of this protest began when Colin Kaepernick, a back up quarterback for the San Francisco
49ers, kneeled during the National Anthem in the 49er s first preseason game. Although this form of
protest is very peaceful, many people believe it is disrespectful and have begun to question
Kaepernick s patriotism. Kneeling during the National Anthem creates a lot of tension between
citizens, especially when it is used to protest a highly controversial topic to begin with. Kneeling
during the National Anthem began as a protest about police brutality and racial injustice but exploded
into many other subcategories and arguments. Many people have begun to question the integrity and
beliefs of many players who have used kneeling or sitting during the National Anthem as a form of
protest. One of the more frequents interpretations of the protest has been that the protestors don t
support our military or government. Although an article recently released quickly ended those
misinterpretation, Kaepernick announced afterward that he would donate the first million of his $11.9
million salary

Rory Deveaux s The Name Of The Star
The Name of the Star
The Name of the Star follows Rory Deveaux, an American teenager from Louisiana as she attends her
senior year at a London boarding school. Her arrival in England coincides with the outset of a series of
gruesome murders by what seems to be a Jack the Ripper copycat. As the bodies pile up, Rippermania
spreads throughout England and Rory gets stuck in the middle of it all when she becomes a witness
after seeing a mysterious man on school grounds. A man no one else has seen and who becomes the
prime suspect of the crimes. As the plot and mystery unfolds, Rory finds herself in great danger and
part of a group of people that are, apparently, the secret ghost police of London.

stories that beg further development; what happens in the end opens up a can of worms that will have

philosophical, ethical aspects to what the Shades do and I want to see how it will be explored in

Environmental Impacts Of Ecuador Essay
In today s hectic world people work longer hours and utilize more technology and energy more than
ever. The impact that this is having on the environment is substantial in both negative and positive
ways. It is hard to deny the benefits modern technology has produced for the world, in industry and in
everyday life. With more and more technological breakthroughs, there have been many positive
ecological impacts, but the negative impacts are almost overwhelming. A Perfect example would be
the deforestation of our rain forests.
Ecuador is located on the equator in the tropical Andes of South America. Its territory includes four
principal regions: the Amazon, the Andes, the Pacific Coast, and the Galapagos Islands; and is home
to at least 14 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Before human impact Ecuador must have been covered by an estimated fifty two million acres of
forest. During the coca and banana boom, the coastal lowland forests were cleared for these
agriculture crops. In the interandean basin native vegetation has been practically eliminated since
colonial times, replaced by crops, pasture, towns and cities, and eucalyptus and pine plantations. This
region suffers serious soil erosion problems. Today only about 1 2% of its original forest covers
remains. Only about 5% remain of the rich forests of the coastal region, most of which have been
destroyed in the last 50 years by logging, agroindustrial monocultures (banana, cacao, coffee, African
palm) and colonization. In the province of Esmeraldas (in northwest Ecuador), the last unprotected old
growth forests on the coast are now being liquidated by the timber industry and cleared for huge
plantations of African palm which are currently responsible for the fastest deforestation rate in South
America.
Currently Ecuador s major environmental problems are erosion in the highland areas, deforestation,
and water pollution. Water Resources estimated that the amount of arid land increased by 31.5%
between 1954 and 1979, when 7.5% of the coastal lowland and Sierra were classified as arid (meaning
severe lack of water). Between 1981 and 1985, 840,000 acres of land were deforested annually. By the
1990s, Ecuador had lost over 30% of the

Descriptive Speech
When I was six years old, my father would take me his frequent stops to Walmart every week. One
could imagine how repetitive the car ride would be so as a way to make it a little more thrilling, I
would entertain my father by asking him facetious questions. These questions ranged from subjects
like, Why is the sky blue? or Are there bathrooms in Heaven? No matter how childish the question,
my father would always have an elaborate answer that left me with more questions. However, once I
asked my father about the origin of my name, he just answered me with four simple words: We just
liked it. Recently, I ve tried to bog the mind of my mother and try to understand where she got the
name Taylor Ashley from. So, you just liked the name. Like there isn t a story behind it, I asked over
the sounds of my fellow Tuskegee classmates. I m sorry but there ain t no story behind it. I just always
like the name Taylor, baby. My mother always liked the name Taylor, so much so, that when she was
little she wanted the name to be her own. My mother s birth name is Tawanda which to her is deemed
as a ghetto name. I never really understood why she would want to give up a name that left a certain
twang on your tongue after saying it. The only way I could comprehend her reason for this was the
fact that my mother desired a life outside of the New Orleans St.Bernard projects; a life that offered
her more than week old lunch meat and flying roaches as roommates. A girl with the

When using beauty products, you expect them to not only enhance your appearance, making you look
irresistible, but you think that they don t have negative effects for you either. Unfortunately, this isn t
the case with a lot of the beauty products on the market, and to know which are the beauty products
that actually do more harm than good, read the following lines and avoid ever using them. Xlash
Eyelash Enhancer Lash growth serums have been around for quite some time, and while mostly all of
them deliver the expected results and give you irresistible long lashes, some products unfortunately
contain prostaglandin analogues, which are basically pharmaceutical substances that shouldn t be

avoid using precisely because it contains prostaglandin analogues is the Xlash Eyelash Enhancer
which in addition to being filled with ingredients that are actually harmful for your eyes, comes at the
very high price of $60. Instead of buying this harmful and exorbitantly priced lash growth serum, buy

The First Of Disney Pixar s Animated Films Without A Male...
BRAVE The first of Disney Pixar s animated films without a male centered cast featuring a spunky,
defiant, and disheveled Scottish princess (figure 5), Merida, was Brave. Opening with the expected
invocation, Once Upon a Time, Disney prepares the audience to expect the stereotypical gender
patterns of the past to include a land far away and a beautiful princess (Preston 198). Immediately
opening with what might appear to be an twist from Disney tale s tradition, the audience discovers that
Merida is an adolescent proclaiming with unwavering certainty, The one thing we [all] search for is
the right to change (Brave). This statement in this stage of life indicates, perhaps, that one should not
grow up as quickly as possible but rather one should desire to enjoy the adventures of discovering one
s individual path without mimicking the romantic desires of adults (Ebrahim 46). Following the
traditional fairy tale format, Merida sees her archenemy in another woman, her beautiful, proper, royal
mother. The antagonistic Queen instructs her daughter with language that employs a two value system:
Princesses don t snort like boys, Only men carry weapons, and The amount of food on your plate is
like your brothers, to which Merida responds in song, I am alive when [doing these masculine things]
(Brave, Sunderland 87). The plot quick unfolds indicating that Merida, expected to follow tradition, is
bound by duty to enter into a marriage with a man who has won her hand by a

Based On The Study Of Various Security Models Of Cloud
Based on the study of various security models of cloud computing we have proposed a new security
model of cloud computing the steps in the proposed security model are: first the user creates a local
user agent, and establish a temporary security certificate, and then user agents use this certificate for
secure authentication in an effective time. With this certificate, which includes the host name, user
name, user id, start time, end time and security attributes etc; the user s security access and
authorization is complete. When the user s task is to use the resource on the cloud service provider,
mutual authentication take place between user agent and specific application, while the application

Standards, procedures, and guidelines referred to as policy in the superior sense of a worldwide
information security policy [14].
Privilege Control: This security component is necessary to control cloud usage by different individuals
and organizations. It protects user s privacy and ensures data integrity and secrecy by applying an
anthology of rules and policies. Cloud users are granted different levels of access permissions and
resource ownerships based on their account type. Only authorized users can access the authorized
parts of the encrypted data through identity based decryption algorithm. For example, in a healthcare
cloud, not all practitioners have the same privileges to access patient s data, this may depend on the
degree to which a practitioner is involved/specialized in treatment; patients can also allow or refuse
distribution their information with other healthcare practitioners or hospitals [24].
Encryption/Decryption algorithms [23] such as AES [5] [7] and RC4 [6] can be employed by this
component to achieve confidentiality of information [22].
Data Protection: Data stored in the cloud storage resources may be very sensitive and critical, for
example, clouds may host electronic healthcare records (EHR) which contain patients private

Essay About Jiao Zi
When people talk about Chinese food culture, I have to mention the traditional Chinese food Jiao Zi.
After Zhang Zhongjing create cold dispelling dumpling soup , it passed to Mongolia in Song Dynasty
(960 1279) and became as festival food named Bian Shi. With the conquest of the Mongolia Empire,
Bian Shi gradually introduced to East and North Asia, eat dumplings during festivals customs
gradually for a number of ethnic identity. In Yuan Dynasty (1271 1368) Bian Shi once again returned
to China, after Qing Dynasty (1644 1912), Bian Shi collectively known as Jiao Zi and has been spread
to today.
Why dumplings called Jiao Zi? In ancient times, people divided one day into twelve periods to record
time, the beginning of one day was called Zi Shi , which is 11 pm. to 1 am. In New Year s Eve, Zi Shi

Foils in literature are characters that contrast another character, highlighting important traits or flaws.
Foils are often mine characters that are polarized from the main protagonist/antagonist. In Beowulf,
Unferth is the foil to the hero, Beowulf; he s a complete opposite to the hero. Unferth is jealous and
seeks to disparage Beowulf, has lesser morals and isn t a hero. When Beowulf arrived, Unferth was

Theme Of The God Of Small Things
The Post colonial experiences have made the relationships of families much more difficult due to the
fragmentation throughout the country. Children and adults lost their home and the struggles and
troublesome difficulties they had in their homeland. The development of the colonizer s land, made
them to become confused with where their loyalties should lie. In Arundhati Roy s novel The God of
Small Things , the Kochamma family is a family of tragic people. It is their own cultural traditions
that lead them to the tragedy. However, the theme within the novel is of the people oppressed by the
colonisation of India especially by England, and how a society is consumed with prejudices based on
class or caste and color that begin to turn on itself, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hybridity occurs as a result of movements of cultural suppression, as when the colonial power invades
to over rule political and economic control, or when settler disposed people and forced them to
assimilate to new social patterns. The impression that Sophie left for herself is loved from the
beginning. The entire family s behavior is peculiar especially in Baby Kochamma s. In the novel there
are different levels of meaning other than the peripheral one. It means that people are forced into a
unique pattern of thinking and practice which is enabled by the public school education established by
the colonial rulers. Roy herself is a representative of such a phenomenon. The post colonial mind is a
fragmented post war ground; a war that s won and lost. As said by Post colonial writer Edward Said
who argued that the West had always dominated the East for more than 2,000 years. Europe had
dominated Asia politically and so completely that even the Western texts were based on the Eastern
subjects and even most Western scholars could not recognize that it is a fact that the characters in the
novel have adopted the Western ways to suit their needs they remain centered on the power structures

Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen,
First and foremost, thank you for being here in support of the student government association. I want

have asked me why I am running for vice president. Would you ask a fifth grader if he is going to go

Marketing Discourse Community Analysis
As a Marketing major at Roger Williams University, I am involved with a lot of activities on campus.
More importantly, I am a part of a marketing discourse community. A discourse community is a group
of people who share a common interest in a subject. This subject uses language, terms and problems
foreign to other people not in the community. Marketing at RWU is used for everything that we use
today, and there is a lot of psychology work behind it. Together I believe that all students in a class

Classroom Rules
Simple classroom rules created by the class will provide ownership and understanding. A daily review
of the rules will reinforce expectations. The first week of each quarter will include a review of the
explanations for the rules to reinforce the importance of rules. They will be posted throughout the
classroom as reminders for the entire class. Johnny will have a visual representation taped to the top of
his desk for continual cuing of expected behavior. (Sprick, Garrison Howard, 1998).
All students will receive cueing when displaying minor disruptive behaviors. Students that display
more disruptive behaviors such as those causing the class to stop, running around the room, throwing
items in the room, or hitting will receive consequences (giving up their job, not earning a star, may not
participate in particular activities) for their behavior. Students that display proper behavior will be
reinforced with encouragement. (Sprick, Garrison Howard, 1998).
Classroom Routine and Transitions

The Greatest Pass Rusher Of College Football
By: Daryan Jessie
The greatest pass rusher in college football today said Coach Tom Osborne of the Nebraska,
Cornhuskers. Have you ever heard of the biggest ovation you never heard. 73,650 fans all for a single
deaf person named Kenny Walker. It was his last game for university and he was going on to the
Denver Broncos.
Kenny Walker was born in april 6th, 1967, in Crane, TX. He became deaf at the age of 2, from spinal
meningitis. He was offered a football scholarship from the University of Nebraska
Rare is it that warmth crowds wrath for the spotlight when the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the
Colorado Buffaloes crack helmets in their annual Big Eight showdown. Yet that was the mood this
season at chilly Memorial Stadium in Lincoln as fans applauded loudly every senior playing his final
home game.
Nothing matched the reception waiting Kenny Walker, however. He received the biggest ovation you
never heard. There was no applause. When Walker ran onto the field for the last time, he saw Big Red
fans thanking him in sign language. They were deaf clapping, a majority of the 73,650 using a hand
gesture to show affection that went far beyond Walker s crunching tackles and sacks as an All America
lineman. Their arms raised, appropriately, like a referee signaling touchdown and their wrists rotating
counterclockwise, the fans applauded Walker.
Deaf since contracting spinal meningitis at 2, Walker had inspired the Midwest, publicly sharing his
story so others

Strickland states, In tact, the ASCA National Model (2005) promotes cross walking student
competencies by grade level (sequence) and by specific guidance lesson or curricula, (Strickland,
2007). This information is valuable in determining the correct area of competency when determining a
students focused goals. The ASCA National Crosswalking Tool helps create a balanced of
interventions that support, enhance and foster all areas of development. Development can be described
as a change over time in any a structure, thought, or behavior that have been adapted by biological or
environmental influences. In my definition of development, the crosswalk tool is an excellent resource
to help with this progression in students academics. There are differences in from child to child in the
timing for reaching developmental milestones. Henceforth we as counselors will come in contact with
a wide range of students. This tool will help us focus on areas the student need to pay more closer
attention to inevitable become a high achieving student. In the Martin s article it discovered that, This
study also found that over a 3 year period, students showed better academic performance in schools
with CDG programs, even if the programs were not fully implemented (Martin, 2009). In conclusion

The Cause Of Breast Cancer In Women
Breast cancer is one of the prominent causes of death amongst women of all ages and ethnicities.
However, not many people are informed that men also are at risk for breast cancer. Many non profit
organizations such as the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, sports teams, food advertisers and celebrities
promote the pink ribbon as an international symbol for breast cancer that is used to express moral
support for women but not men. Unfortunately less research and promotion of breast cancer in men is
publicized due to common stigma that only women, suffer from this type of cancer.

Breast cancer in men is relatively uncommon but its incidence has been rising. Traditionally, the
management of breast cancer in men is based on extrapolation from clinical trials of breast cancer in
women, due to the much more extensive data available in women with this disease. There are,
however, unique characteristics that distinguish breast cancer in men and these should be taken into
consideration when managing this patient population (Massarweh, Alfred, Choi 1). Male breast cancer
is a rare disease that accounts for less than 1% of all cases of cancer in men (Sasco 1993). Limited
research has been conducted in this setting and most available data comes from observational
retrospective studies. Therefore treatment of male breast cancer has been extrapolated from results of
trials conducted in female patients, which renders knowledge uncertain about the optimal therapy in
this setting (Sousa, Berta 1). Studies account for less than 1% of all cases of cancer in men, men are
still capable of getting cancer. Though the rate is acute for men getting breast cancer or any other
cancer they should not be counted out of studies and not focused on, because the rate is so low, that

Book Banning Book
Everyone who has ever read a book has read a book by a banned author. Book banning has been
around for hundreds of years. People should be allowed to read whatever they choose. The ability to
read, speak, think, and express ourselves freely is a right, not a privilege
(Celebrate). Standing up for what people believe in is something they re taught to do at a bright,
young age; making sure people are capable of reading the literature they want is one of the biggest
controversies. No one should have the restriction of book banning forcing itself on their reading
choices. There are many things that go along with book banning, the history of how banning has come

Many parents monitor what their child is reading. When something is brought home that they don t
agree with, this is when the anger comes out. Every parent believes the library s policies should be set
by the people (Berry). Parents believe when a book is threatening towards their child it should
immediately be removed from all shelves and forbid from being read by any other students. This
situation happens quite often, but in realization no child should be told what they are allowed or not
allowed to read by another student s parent. Some parents have even began to call them challenged
books because they believe the term is too harsh, and sounds too much like censorship. Once again the
term fear manifests itself; parents are extremely afraid of what their child can find in between the
pages of a book. Many of the times the parent will not read the book, but rather read the premise and
decide from there. Parents do not realize that the book they are reading could be the most important
books that child or teen could ever read. Words and ideas... will help them fight their monsters
(Finan). Children will never know how to be the best that they can be unless their parent s guide them

Persuasive Essay About Cheerleading
According to the article Cheerleading Most Dangerous Sport for Females Andy Soltis states,
Cheerleading is by far the most dangerous role for female athletes...the study of junior and senior high
school cheerleaders found that 37 percent had symptoms of a concussion but failed to report them, and
soon enough I would begin my cheerleading career. Little did I know I would lose something I couldn
t get back, yet this would be my best mistake. My cheerleading career began in the seventh grade
when I tried out for the Meadow Glen Middle School cheer team. The year I tried out Meadow Glen
was a new school, so I did not know the cheer coach, most of the people at tryouts, or how difficult
the tryout process was going to be. Trying out for the team and taking this risk was a step out of my
comfort zone. Eventually the first day of tryouts rolled around and I was ready. I went through the
process with confidence and a smile on my face. Every other day of tryouts went by fast and the final
day had come. After tryouts were over, I went home to wait for the time the results were going to be
posted. Nervously I came back to Meadow Glen when the results of the girls who made the team were
posted and I saw my name on the list! My face gleamed with joy. Both of my two friends made the
team as well and I was so thrilled for the year to come. My first year as a cheerleader was all I
expected it to be. We were not a competition team because we were a first year school but

Three Theoretical Approaches to Conselling
This essay will compare and contrast three theoretical approaches to counselling psychoanalysis,
person centered therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).
Underlying assumptions
Psychoanalysis assumes behaviours we display when we are adults are rooted in our childhood
experiences and CBT assumes behaviour as a learned response. Psychoanalysis links childhood event
and associated feelings to current problems which is similar to CBT where many of client s schemas
were created when he was very young and usually stems from childhood too. However, despite the
similarity of involving childhood experiences, psychoanalysis sees an individual as being driven by
unconscious urges but CBT sees an individual s behaviour as a learned response. Person centered
differs from the previous two theories and it assumes clients as previously not being able to have self
actualised. It does not necessarily view an individual as a product of their past experiences.
CBT assumes that the way we feel and behave is determined by how we perceive and structure our
experience, whereas person centered therapy assumes client had various experiences and a personality
is developed as a result of the previous subjective experiences.
Freud s structural model assumes that human psyche is created via the interaction of id, ego and
superego. It also assumes that we are driven by internal biological sexual (Eros) and aggressive
(Thanatos) drives. It is similar to Person centered such that the latter

Dangerous Toys for Our Children As a mother, there is no greater concern than the safety of our
children. Yet with the recent reports of lead in toys for kids, mothers and fathers alike now have a new
worry. One of the world s largest entrusted and respected toy companies has been criticized for

The magnets can stick to one another through human tissue, leading to punctures. According to the
CPSC s website, the children suffered intestinal tears that required surgery. The company has ordered
that all products be pulled off retail shelves, said Nancy Nord, acting chairwoman of the Consumer
Product Safety Commission. The 1.5 million toys recalled by Fisher Price s preschool division
included Elmo, Big Bird, and Dora, all made in China. The recall was prompted by concerns about
lead paint and risks associated with small, high powered magnets (CNN, 2007). According to the
executive vice president for Mattel International, the dangerous levels of lead paint came from the
subcontractor of a vendor that did not use certified paint. The subcontractor has been associated with
this company for 20 years. Eckert said Mattel has changed the way it attaches magnets to its toys to
make them safer. These recent statements mark the latest in a series of recalls of defective products
made in China, which is the second largest trading partner of the United States after Canada.
Incidentally, China produces 80 percent of the world s toys. To prevent these problems from recurring,
Nord said the Chinese manufacturers are coming to Washington, D.C. this fall for product safety
training sessions (CNN, 2007). In conclusion, we must make sure that our government lives up to its

Marketing Strategy Of Pampers
Pampers
Pampers was discovered in 1956, by Vic Mills, who worked at Proctor Gamble. The company
struggled when Huggies as created, but have developed a new strategy, which has helped the company
rise back to the top of the diaper industry. Pampers new strategy focuses on customer feedback and
relationships, global social media marketing, promotions, and producing quality products. Pampers
has grown to be the number one brand in the diaper industry, due to their heavy utilization in social
media marketing, and the personal relationship with their customers.
History
Vic Mills is an engineer that worked for Proctor Gamble, who did not enjoy changing his grandkids
cloth diapers, so he wanted to come up with an easier solution for changing diapers. With that being
said, he worked with other researchers to develop a disposable diaper in 1956, which was the start of
Pampers. In 1958 the company introduced the costly plastic diaper in Texas, but quickly realized how
uncomfortable they were for the babies and not economically cost effective for the parents, so it was
back to the drawing board. According to the Pampers Newsroom (2011) six months after the Dallas
Test market, P G designed a diaper with better features including zee pleats, superior containment, a
hydrophobic top sheet and a plastic back sheet. The testing of the new and improved diaper was a hit.

Duality Between Nature and Society in The Tempest
One of the essential themes of The Tempest is the duality between nature and society. This is made
evident through the character of Caliban: the disfigured fish like creature that inhabits the island upon
which the play takes place. Caliban lacks civility because he was born on the island deprived of any
social or spiritual morality other than nature and instinct. He is literally man untamed. Caliban is not
monstrous simply for the sake of being frightening; his ghastly appearance is intended to literally
depict the essential differences between civilization and natural instinct.

These are present because life is easier with rules like this. Human beings no longer had to worry
about being killed or being looted as much as long as they were within the confines of a civilization.
People started to be able to take up specialized professions and be able to count on other people to
perform tasks such as carpentry, cooking, etc. Governments were formed to organize the people and
efficiently run a civilization. Now the individual was not responsible for every aspect of survival but
contributed to the overall survival of a civilization. From this economies were born either through
trade or currency. However, the cornerstones of human civilizations (money and power) have lead to a
whole new form of evil and brutality that was never present in nature. Its almost of a blind perversion
of human nature. Through bettering our situation, we have corrupted ourselves to an extent (greed).
Civilization can produce more savage and evil beings than nature. While Caliban is perceived as being
evil and monstrous, he really is not. He just does not know any better. However, Antonio is much
more malicious than Caliban because he knows what he has done is evil This goes back to the concept
of nature vs. society.
Caliban is Shakespeare s representation of natural instinct and how it collides with society. Of course
Caliban could have simply been a man raised in nature,

How Modern Cities Can Become Energy Efficient
The nuclear accident in Fukushima, Japan revealed the fragility of highly centralised energy systems
that are not adapted into complex societies. Some technological solutions such as carbon dioxide
capture or shale gas could even turn out to be mere illusions in the future. Meanwhile, energy costs are
increasing every day, with social consequences. As a result, there have been calls for strong
involvement of local authorities in formulating energy policies for cities. This will give rise to a more
prominent place to decentralise policies on the basis of energy efficiency, energy savings as well the

The second method is conducting regular energy audits and retrofits. Cities can conduct energy audits
on all buildings they control in order to inventory current energy costs as well as identify the most
affordable and efficient retrofits. The third method that cities can adopt in order to achieve high
performance buildings involves implementing green building standards. According to
sustainablebusiness.com, these standards help existing buildings become more energy efficient while
also ensuring that future buildings will be more energy efficient and environmentally friendly. Thirdly,
cities should shift from conventional energy grids to smart grids. Upgrading the grid is one of the most
significant investments in infrastructure that cities that can undertake. Smart grids use digital
technology to react in real time to grid load fluctuations, blackouts and price spikes; by transmitting
signals to customers homes and appliances requesting them to reduce energy use during these periods
(Mazza, 2005). Advanced grids even incorporate power sources so that they are able to moderate loads
coming from each source based on cost and availability. In summary, the advantages of smart grids
include: improving energy efficiency, improving cost savings and providing consumers with extensive
information on pricing and usage. Bailey (2006) argues that smart grids are pivotal in countering

  • 2. Desmond Doss My Hero In May 1945, soldiers scaled a 400 foot cliff onto a plain that had been torn by war. Almost immediately, they were bombarded by enemy fire and bombs. In a very short time, over many men had fallen and the leader ordered the men to retreat and take cover. All the remaining soldiers dashed back to safety. Only one man refused to take cover. That man was Desmond Doss. Doss remained and was determined to bring back as many men as possible. All through the night, he kept moving around and rescuing more and more men. In the morning, more than seventy five men had been saved. Doss was a Seventh Day Adventist with strong beliefs in God. His childhood taught him to never kill. When World War II arrived, he enlisted in the army. However, he refused to carry a gun into battle and kill others. As a result of his actions, he became the first conscientious objector to receive the Medal of Honor and inspired many to be self sacrificing. He is my hero because he put others before himself. Doss behaved heroically, had great character traits, and overcame his adversities, and therefore, he had the qualities to be my hero. Doss had the qualities of a hero because of his great actions such as saving men and putting others before himself. He was a combat medic during World War II and saved many men. During the Battle of Okinawa, Doss and his company were told to assault and take Hacksaw Ridge, one major cliff on the island of Okinawa. The company scaled the cliff and began to fight. However, ... • 3. Free Living in Fitzgerald´s Echoes of the Jazz Age Essay Fitzgerald does not associate the Jazz Age with jazz music, but he does associate it with free going men and women. Fitzgerald believes that the Jazz Age was a was a time of no care and living life to the fullest. He says wherefore eat, drink, drink and be merry, for to morrow we die (16). This is showing that the people of the Jazz Age did not care what happened tomorrow as long as they lived today to its fullest. When he says that something had to be done with all the nervous energy stored up and unexpended in the War, (13) he shows why people were so free going. Fitzgerald is saying that people did not know if there was going to be another war or if when they were going to die, so they had to live life today and not wait for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When he says great filling stations full of money he is talking about how people could get as much credit as they wanted without really worrying about paying it back. People spent a lot of money with no regrets or any worries of paying it back or how much they were actually spending. When Fitzgerald says Even when you were broke you didn t worry about money, because it was in such profusion around you (21), he is saying that even when you were poor you could always find some money to help you out of a tough situation. You could always count on someone helping you because there was so much money around you. It was possible for someone to have a bad job and still live a large life. Someone could use make little to no money but then use credit to live large. They could either could pay with credit or just use someone elses money to have fun and live a fun life. This is what Fitzgerald says that this is one of the reasons for the Great Depression, people couldn t pay off their share of credit. Fitzgerald see the reactions to the events in 1919 as a landmark and a new way of life and thought. When the news of the Harding and the Ohio Gang or Sacco and Vanzetti scandal were released by the news people s idealism flared up (14). People did not believe that the government was dealing with the situation in the correct way and believed that they could show the government by going against them. • 4. The Importance Of Kneeling During The National Anthem It has been a custom of all citizens, including professional athletes, to stand and remove their hats during the National Anthem since 1931. Although as of late, in an obscure manner of protest, many athletes and now fans have been kneeling during the National Anthem. Perhaps no group has more influence of the general public than professional athletes, which has been clearly documented as of late. All of this protest began when Colin Kaepernick, a back up quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, kneeled during the National Anthem in the 49er s first preseason game. Although this form of protest is very peaceful, many people believe it is disrespectful and have begun to question Kaepernick s patriotism. Kneeling during the National Anthem creates a lot of tension between citizens, especially when it is used to protest a highly controversial topic to begin with. Kneeling during the National Anthem began as a protest about police brutality and racial injustice but exploded into many other subcategories and arguments. Many people have begun to question the integrity and beliefs of many players who have used kneeling or sitting during the National Anthem as a form of protest. One of the more frequents interpretations of the protest has been that the protestors don t support our military or government. Although an article recently released quickly ended those misinterpretation, Kaepernick announced afterward that he would donate the first million of his $11.9 million salary ... • 5. Rory Deveaux s The Name Of The Star The Name of the Star The Name of the Star follows Rory Deveaux, an American teenager from Louisiana as she attends her senior year at a London boarding school. Her arrival in England coincides with the outset of a series of gruesome murders by what seems to be a Jack the Ripper copycat. As the bodies pile up, Rippermania spreads throughout England and Rory gets stuck in the middle of it all when she becomes a witness after seeing a mysterious man on school grounds. A man no one else has seen and who becomes the prime suspect of the crimes. I am sick and tired of everything being a series these days but I would read more of The Shades of London now if it were available. This series has real potential: all characters are well developed with background stories that beg further development; what happens in the end opens up a can of worms that will have to be dealt with and is basically an even greater life changing event for Rory and finally, there are real philosophical, ethical aspects to what the Shades do and I want to see how it will be explored in further ... • 6. Environmental Impacts Of Ecuador Essay In today s hectic world people work longer hours and utilize more technology and energy more than ever. The impact that this is having on the environment is substantial in both negative and positive ways. It is hard to deny the benefits modern technology has produced for the world, in industry and in everyday life. With more and more technological breakthroughs, there have been many positive ecological impacts, but the negative impacts are almost overwhelming. A Perfect example would be the deforestation of our rain forests. Ecuador is located on the equator in the tropical Andes of South America. Its territory includes four principal regions: the Amazon, the Andes, the Pacific Coast, and the Galapagos Islands; and is home to at least 14 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Before human impact Ecuador must have been covered by an estimated fifty two million acres of forest. During the coca and banana boom, the coastal lowland forests were cleared for these agriculture crops. In the interandean basin native vegetation has been practically eliminated since colonial times, replaced by crops, pasture, towns and cities, and eucalyptus and pine plantations. This region suffers serious soil erosion problems. Today only about 1 2% of its original forest covers remains. Only about 5% remain of the rich forests of the coastal region, most of which have been destroyed in the last 50 years by logging, agroindustrial monocultures (banana, cacao, coffee, African palm) and colonization. In the province of Esmeraldas (in northwest Ecuador), the last unprotected old growth forests on the coast are now being liquidated by the timber industry and cleared for huge plantations of African palm which are currently responsible for the fastest deforestation rate in South America. Currently Ecuador s major environmental problems are erosion in the highland areas, deforestation, and water pollution. Water Resources estimated that the amount of arid land increased by 31.5% between 1954 and 1979, when 7.5% of the coastal lowland and Sierra were classified as arid (meaning severe lack of water). Between 1981 and 1985, 840,000 acres of land were deforested annually. By the 1990s, Ecuador had lost over 30% of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Descriptive Speech When I was six years old, my father would take me his frequent stops to Walmart every week. One could imagine how repetitive the car ride would be so as a way to make it a little more thrilling, I would entertain my father by asking him facetious questions. These questions ranged from subjects like, Why is the sky blue? or Are there bathrooms in Heaven? No matter how childish the question, my father would always have an elaborate answer that left me with more questions. However, once I asked my father about the origin of my name, he just answered me with four simple words: We just liked it. Recently, I ve tried to bog the mind of my mother and try to understand where she got the name Taylor Ashley from. So, you just liked the name. Like there isn t a story behind it, I asked over the sounds of my fellow Tuskegee classmates. I m sorry but there ain t no story behind it. I just always like the name Taylor, baby. My mother always liked the name Taylor, so much so, that when she was little she wanted the name to be her own. My mother s birth name is Tawanda which to her is deemed as a ghetto name. I never really understood why she would want to give up a name that left a certain twang on your tongue after saying it. The only way I could comprehend her reason for this was the fact that my mother desired a life outside of the New Orleans St.Bernard projects; a life that offered her more than week old lunch meat and flying roaches as roommates. Xlash Eyelash Enhancer When using beauty products, you expect them to not only enhance your appearance, making you look irresistible, but you think that they don t have negative effects for you either. Unfortunately, this isn t the case with a lot of the beauty products on the market, and to know which are the beauty products that actually do more harm than good, read the following lines and avoid ever using them. Xlash Eyelash Enhancer Lash growth serums have been around for quite some time, and while mostly all of them deliver the expected results and give you irresistible long lashes, some products unfortunately contain prostaglandin analogues, which are basically pharmaceutical substances that shouldn t be introduced in the production of cosmetic products. For example, a lash growth serum that you should avoid using precisely because it contains prostaglandin analogues is the Xlash Eyelash Enhancer which in addition to being filled with ingredients that are actually harmful for your eyes, comes at the very high price of $60. Instead of buying this harmful and exorbitantly priced lash growth serum, buy the Rimmel Lash Accelerator Serum for only $10, because it doesn t contain any harmful ingredients for your eyes, and it gives great results very fast. • 9. The First Of Disney Pixar s Animated Films Without A Male... BRAVE The first of Disney Pixar s animated films without a male centered cast featuring a spunky, defiant, and disheveled Scottish princess (figure 5), Merida, was Brave. Opening with the expected invocation, Once Upon a Time, Disney prepares the audience to expect the stereotypical gender patterns of the past to include a land far away and a beautiful princess (Preston 198). Immediately opening with what might appear to be an twist from Disney tale s tradition, the audience discovers that Merida is an adolescent proclaiming with unwavering certainty, The one thing we [all] search for is the right to change (Brave). This statement in this stage of life indicates, perhaps, that one should not grow up as quickly as possible but rather one should desire to enjoy the adventures of discovering one s individual path without mimicking the romantic desires of adults (Ebrahim 46). Following the traditional fairy tale format, Merida sees her archenemy in another woman, her beautiful, proper, royal mother. The antagonistic Queen instructs her daughter with language that employs a two value system: Princesses don t snort like boys, Only men carry weapons, and The amount of food on your plate is like your brothers, to which Merida responds in song, I am alive when [doing these masculine things] (Brave, Sunderland 87). With this certificate, which includes the host name, user name, user id, start time, end time and security attributes etc; the user s security access and authorization is complete. • 27. Three Theoretical Approaches to Conselling This essay will compare and contrast three theoretical approaches to counselling psychoanalysis, person centered therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Underlying assumptions Psychoanalysis assumes behaviours we display when we are adults are rooted in our childhood experiences and CBT assumes behaviour as a learned response. Psychoanalysis links childhood event and associated feelings to current problems which is similar to CBT where many of client s schemas were created when he was very young and usually stems from childhood too. However, despite the similarity of involving childhood experiences, psychoanalysis sees an individual as being driven by unconscious urges but CBT sees an individual s behaviour as a learned response. Person centered differs from the previous two theories and it assumes clients as previously not being able to have self actualised. It does not necessarily view an individual as a product of their past experiences. CBT assumes that the way we feel and behave is determined by how we perceive and structure our experience, whereas person centered therapy assumes client had various experiences and a personality is developed as a result of the previous subjective experiences. Freud s structural model assumes that human psyche is created via the interaction of id, ego and superego. • 31. Opal Card Essay The Opal card is a contactless smartcard that is the new centrepiece of the new electronic ticketing system implemented by Cubic Transportation Systems (CTS). It allows the user to top up a balance either through manual loading (via Opal top up machines), or linked to a credit card. This balance is used against Opal card readers to scan where the trip begins and ends, automatically calculating the fare and deducting it from the balance on the card. • 34. tempnature Duality Between Nature and Society in... Duality Between Nature and Society in The Tempest One of the essential themes of The Tempest is the duality between nature and society. This is made evident through the character of Caliban: the disfigured fish like creature that inhabits the island upon which the play takes place. Caliban lacks civility because he was born on the island deprived of any social or spiritual morality other than nature and instinct. He is literally man untamed. Caliban is not monstrous simply for the sake of being frightening; his ghastly appearance is intended to literally depict the essential differences between civilization and natural instinct. Human beings no longer had to worry about being killed or being looted as much as long as they were within the confines of a civilization. People started to be able to take up specialized professions and be able to count on other people to perform tasks such as carpentry, cooking, etc. Governments were formed to organize the people and efficiently run a civilization. Now the individual was not responsible for every aspect of survival but contributed to the overall survival of a civilization. From this economies were born either through trade or currency. However, the cornerstones of human civilizations (money and power) have lead to a whole new form of evil and brutality that was never present in nature. Its almost of a blind perversion of human nature. Through bettering our situation, we have corrupted ourselves to an extent (greed). Civilization can produce more savage and evil beings than nature. While Caliban is perceived as being evil and monstrous, he really is not. He just does not know any better. However, Antonio is much more malicious than Caliban because he knows what he has done is evil This goes back to the concept of nature vs. society. Caliban is Shakespeare s representation of natural instinct and how it collides with society. Of course Caliban could have simply been a man raised in nature, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Some technological solutions such as carbon dioxide capture or shale gas could even turn out to be mere illusions in the future. Meanwhile, energy costs are increasing every day, with social consequences. As a result, there have been calls for strong involvement of local authorities in formulating energy policies for cities. The second method is conducting regular energy audits and retrofits. Cities can conduct energy audits on all buildings they control in order to inventory current energy costs as well as identify the most affordable and efficient retrofits. The third method that cities can adopt in order to achieve high performance buildings involves implementing green building standards. According to sustainablebusiness.com, these standards help existing buildings become more energy efficient while also ensuring that future buildings will be more energy efficient and environmentally friendly. Thirdly, cities should shift from conventional energy grids to smart grids. Upgrading the grid is one of the most significant investments in infrastructure that cities that can undertake. Smart grids use digital technology to react in real time to grid load fluctuations, blackouts and price spikes; by transmitting signals to customers homes and appliances requesting them to reduce energy use during these periods (Mazza, 2005). Advanced grids even incorporate power sources so that they are able to moderate loads coming from each source based on cost and availability. In summary, the advantages of smart grids include: improving energy efficiency, improving cost savings and providing consumers with extensive information on pricing and usage. Bailey (2006) argues that smart grids are pivotal in countering terrorism because they can be used to provide backup power in case of external ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
