Who Is Bartleby The Scrivener
Bartleby, the Scrivener by Herman Melville, is a story about the quiet struggle of the common man.
Refusing to bow to the demands of his employer, Bartleby represents a challenge to the materialistic
ideology by refusing to comply with simple requests made by his employer. The story begins with the
employer having trouble finding good employees. This is until the employer hires Bartleby. At first,
Bartleby works hard and does his job so well that everyone has a hard time imagining what it would
be like without him. After three days, Bartleby is asked by his boss to examine a legal paper. He
replies with I would prefer not to . The story ends with Bartleby being discovered occupying the office
at weekends and being taken into custody for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By the end of the story, the constant refusals wear everyone down and he is left alone. When new
people move into the building, Bartleby still refuses to move from his office, leading to his arrest.
Locked away in prison, Bartleby still refuses to eat, saying that I prefer not to dine today . This is
significant because it shows that he still uses polite wording even though he has given up living. He
courteously refuses to eat and chooses to live for as long as he prefers to live and curls up against one
of the prison walls. This refusal, even in the face of death, shows an almost courageous side of
Bartleby. He knows that he will most likely die, but he still musters up the courage to continue his
fight. Due to his refusal of food, he will be buried without sustenance for the afterlife, a final nod to
his status as a man without power, appetite, or

Twin Cancer Studies
Cancer has been around for longer than people expect, with the first documented case dating back to
1500 bc. Because of the complexity of tumors, the origin of the disease was unknown until the late
19th century and the search for treatment or a cure came even later. The 20th century saw the greatest
progression of cancer research, with twins being crucial to such studies. Twin studies were used as an
important method in the field of cancer study.
Scientists and researchers did not pay particular attention to twins and zygosity before the 20th
century. One of the earliest and the simplest of assessments was based on the question, Were you as
children as alike as two peas in a pod? When both twins answered affirmatively, they were defined ...

By comparing multiple types of cancer, not just lung cancer, results of over 14 studies indicated that
zygosity of twins play a minimal role in the causation of most types of cancer (3). This further

development of cancer, than the genetic makeup of humans does not affect the development of

Essay on Zora Neale Hurston
On January 7, 1891, Zora Neale Hurston was born in the tiny town of Notasulga, Alabama. She was
the fifth of eight children in the Hurston household. Her father John was a carpenter, sharecropper, and
a Baptist preacher; and her mother Lucy, a former schoolteacher. Within a year of Zora s birth, the
family moved to Eatonville, Florida; a town, which held historical significance as the first,
incorporated Black municipality in the United States. In 1904, thirteen year old Zora was devastated
by the death of her mother. Later that same year, her unaffectionate father removed her from school
and sent her to care for her brother s children. A rambunctious and restless teenager, Zora was eager to
leave the responsibility of that household. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1925, Hurston headed to New York, just as the Harlem Renaissance was at its crest. She enrolled in
Barnard College to study under Franz Boas, the father of anthropology. While there, Hurston married
an old Howard boyfriend named Herbert Sheen, but the marriage was short lived. After graduation,
Zora returned to her hometown of Eatonville to collect folklore as material for her blossoming writing
career. The late 1920 s marked a resurgence of her literary muse as Hurston published several works,
and consequently gained financial sponsorship from wealthy New York patrons. The 1930 s and early
1940 s marked the peak of Hurston s literary career. It was during this time that she completed
graduate work at Columbia, published four novels and an autobiography, and was awarded a
Guggenheim Fellowship. Her writing brought her to the Caribbean where she became so intrigued by
the practice of voodoo that she began incorporating these supernatural elements into her novels and
stories. Although her work was receiving increasing acclaim from the white literati of New York, Zora
often felt under attack from many members of the Black Arts Movement. She termed these detractors,
members of the quot;niggerati quot;, for being close minded in their criticism of her racial politics. By
the mid 1940s Hurston s writing career was faltering. At one point she was arrested and

Slanting and Charge
Our knowledge, not only the specific facts we observe and present but also the facts we remember, is
influenced by the principle of selection. The process of selecting knowledge and highlighting that
takes place when we put our knowledge into words to achieve the communicator. Since emphasis is
simply given stress to subject and indicating what is important or less important, slanting by use of
emphasis is unavoidable, both in speech and writing. Any knowledge that comes to us through words
has been subjected to the double screening of the principle of selection and the slanting of language,
so much of our information comes to us selected and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Be careful of anyone who plays on your emotions, instead of giving good sound reasons. An
emotional appeal used as a substitute for truth is worthless. Emotion is no substitute for reason. To
communicate clearly, you need to choose words that convince your audience of your fairness. Using
loaded words does not accomplish this. When you hold strong opinions, it is easy to slip into biased or
emotionally loaded language.
Slanted language usually will not convince a careful person to agree with your point, and may cause
them to doubt your ability to convey the facts fairly. Slanted or biased language often causes the
hearer to feel manipulated, wary or hostile. While those who already agree with you may become
more convinced of your point, those who disagree may become annoyed, and dig in harder against
your position. There are three major types of slanting: False implication, a careful selection of the
facts, and innuendo (suggestion). False implication: A true statement is made in such a way so as to
imply something else, which turns out be false. A careful selection of the facts: The fallacy equivalent
is suppressed evidence. Innuendo: A covert allusion to something not directly said. This is very similar
to false implication.
Once we have built our personal store of knowledge by selecting what we want to notice. When we
slant our writing, we are choosing what bits of knowledge we want to share, choosing what words we

21 Day Challenge Research Paper
The 21 day challenge was a great experience for me, and I think it overall made me a happier person.
It was easiest for me to just set apart a time each night to journal about a positive experience, write
down three things I am grateful for, and pray. For me writing three things I was grateful for each day
was the aspect of this challenge that increased my happiness the most. It is easy for me to just think
about all the negative aspects of my life and not really think about all the positives, so by writing them
down each day it made me realize how much I have to be grateful for. I realized that most of the day I
would focus on the bad things that happened, so it was nice to focus on all the good parts of my life.
When I started the challenge, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most of the time there are million things going on, so a few minutes to not think about things like
work and school was very relaxing or me. Overall I don t think praying made me much happier, but it
did help me because it was a time to just be alone with my thoughts. Completing a random act of
kindness each day was somewhat challenging at first because I would forget about doing it, and I
would remember later at night and have to do something before going to bed. However later in the
challenge I found it much easier to remember to complete these random acts of kindness. After
completing these acts of kindness, I felt much happier because it is a good feeling knowing you have
helped someone. I felt good knowing that I helped someone or made their day a little better. Overall, I
think this challenge increased my level of happiness because it made me realize I have a lot to be
thankful for, and there are many more positives in my life than what I realized. When I looked through
my notebook consisting of the positive experiences and the 3 things I was grateful for it was very nice
that instead of just remembering the bad things that happened those days I now can remember the
good things. I have a lot more to be happy about than I thought I did going into this challenge. I now
find myself realizing things that I am grateful for more often and

Lab Report For The Purpose Of Gram Staining
Gram Staining
Formal Lab Report
Miranda King
Intro Microbiology
Dr. Hendrickson

Purpose
For the purpose of the gram staining experiment was to learn this specific type of staining technique,
as well as learn how distinguish the differences between Gram positive and Gram negative stains. This
technique uses crystal violet stain, Gram s Iodine, Ethyl Alcohol, and Safranin. These dyes are used in
order to distinguish between the different types of cells. For example, Gram positive staining will
result in a purple color, and Gram negative staining will result in a red or pinkish color (University of
Central Oklahoma department of biology, 2016). When a bacteria results in a purple stain it is
categorized as a gram positive stain because the alcohol that was used to decolorize the bacteria was
not successful. Its cell wall is made with a thick layer of peptidoglycan and holds the crystal violet
color (Case, Funke, Tortora). When a bacteria results in a red or pinkish color, this means that it loses
the crystal violet dye color after being decolorized and keeps the Safranin dye. It would then become
categorized as a gram negative stain (Case, Funke, Tortora). A gram negative bacteria has a cell wall
made of a thin layer of peptidoglycan and a thick layer of lipopolysaccharides thus holding onto the
red dye (Case, Funke, Tortora). Bacteria have different shapes and these shapes determine what family
they belong in. There are

Otto Von Bismarck
Otto von Bismarck was an important figure in the unification of Germany. Bismarck was responsible
for transforming a collection of small German states, unifying them into the German empire, and
becoming its first chancellor. Under the rule of William I, Bismarck was appointed as Prime Minister
of Prussia for assistance over budget. Bismarck urged the king to ignore the liberals about the right to
approve taxes and to instead strengthen the army. Thus making Bismarck a leader of a unification
movement. Bismarck success was due in part because he was a master of Realpolitik, or realistic
policies based on the needs of the state. Bismarck knew how to influence public opinion through press
leaks and doctored documents and his alterations to the Ems Telegram were apart of his agenda in
prompting war with France to further strengthen the German empire. The original Ems Telegram was
a report on an encounter between King William I of Prussia and the French ambassador at the time.
Benedetti had been instructed by his superior, Foreign Minister to present the French demand that the
king should guarantee that he would never again permit the candidacy of a Hohenzollern prince to the
Spanish throne. The meeting was informal and took place on the promenade of the Kursaal with the

Internal Medicine Personal Statement
My first introduction to Internal Medicine was even before starting kindergarten, when as a young kid
I used to visit my dad s clinic. I was always fascinated by the compassion my dad had for the sick and
grief stricken and the sense of joy and happiness he experienced when he used to see them on the way
to recovery. 30 years down the line I graduated from the same medical school as my dad. One of the
proudest moment for me and him alike.
In our folklore it says that the great riders never fall, but even greater are those who ride having
experienced the fall. Failure is the greatest teacher and I experienced it first hand when I lost an
extremely uphill battle to get a spot into medical school. The ground shook beneath my very feet. All
my life I worked hard to fulfill the dream of being a physician, pursuing anything else was not an
option. I learned from the master teacher, the failure himself, studied even harder, and that hard work
led me to have an option of 5 medical schools to choose from. ... Show more content on

Chancellor of the university. His vast knowledge and clinical acumen inspired me even further. The

Paul s Discourse Against Slavery
Interestingly, Paul does not deliver a discourse against slavery but instead teaches on how we are to
relate to each other in Christ. Eventually, Paul was prepared to write to Philemon to explain what they
needed to do to have an exceptional relationship with Onesimus. However, Onesimus conversion had
made a genuine difference in his life that made him consider himself and others differently, including
Philemon. Paul knew by having a different concept of slavery and how to treat others who are in
authority is truly a blessing to for Onesimus and Philemon to know. As a result, all such authority
begins with God, for there is no authority except from God (Rom 13:1).
Paul mentioned that Onesimus at one time was not useful to Philemon, but

Analysis Of The Film Smoke Signals
As Martin Luther King Jr. said, We are not makers of history. We are made by history. History plays a
part in who we are as people, configuring us through our thoughts and actions. Such an idea of history
s importance in the building of one s character manifests in the movie Smoke Signals. In Smoke
Signals, author Sherman Alexie uses literary devices such as costumes, flashbacks, a detailed
narrative, and other devices to create two distinct characters, Victor Joseph and Thomas Builds The
Fire, that symbolize a clash between Native American culture and modern society through the theme
of storytelling. Victor Joseph s portrayal of the classic Native American man is exemplified by Alexie
s use of dialogue, costumes, and flashbacks. For example, when Victor sees Thomas smiling as they
ride their way to Arizona he says, Indians ain t supposed to smile like that. Get stoic (Smoke Signals).
This example of dialogue reveals how Victor believes a Native American man should present himself
traditionally, which strongly contrasts with Thomas s demeanor and appearance. Victor continues on,
saying, Look at your hair, it s all braided up and stuff. You gotta free it. An Indian man ain t nothing
without his hair. (Smoke Signals). Hair design is used to symbolize Victor s close ties with his
ancestral past as a Native American. Additionally, Victor s comment on hair foreshadows when Victor
himself cuts his hair, symbolizing a moment in which Victor embraces his traumatic past by accepting
who he is as a person. In a more literal sense, flashbacks are also used to symbolize the trauma that
Victor experienced in his direct past living with an alcoholic father, Arnold Joseph, who abandoned
him. However, by the end of the movie, Victor embraces this past through the spreading of his father s
ashes. On the other hand, Thomas Builds The Fire symbolizes an embrace of the present and future, as
demonstrated by Alexie s use of oral traditions, costumes, and allegories. For instance, Thomas
represents the future through his uplifting storytelling. Thomas, similarly to Victor, experienced
trauma in his childhood, but it is made obvious that the two are practically opposites. To cope with the
past, Thomas uses oral

The Expansion Of The European Empire
The expansion of the European empire through the start of the 15th century became a distinctive
feature in world history. By the 20th century, large parts of Africa and Asia were colonies of European
powers. In modern society, there is a clear separation between the 1st and 3rd world. A main
contributor to this division occurred over 150 years ago with Britain and its colonization of India.
Colonization has had a prodigious influence on developing the modernity of a country. In addition to
the centralized political system gained from Britain, India gained numerous modern technologies and
ideologies that helped them progress as a nation. These progressions, however, have had some
negative effects on India that are associated with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The East India Company effectively ruled India from 1757 to 1857, where their rise to power came to
an end after the start of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 (Lawson, 35). The direct reason for the rebellion
still remains unclear. It was either a planned war of independence against the British power, an
uncoordinated uprising of soldiers who felt a threat to their religion and traditional practices, or simply
a mutiny by soldiers who wanted increased pay and greater career opportunities (Iyer, 4). The British
Crown signed the Government of India Act 1858, which liquidated the East India Company,
relinquishing all of its assets to Britain, including the control of the territories seized in India. This was
the beginning of the British rule over India, the British Raj, which established India as a British colony
commonly referred to as British India.
Under British rule, India began receiving some positive changes that modernized its society. The
British had already introduced their political, social, and economic ideals to India due to the previous
influence of the East India trade company. India adopted the ideas of liberty, equality, human rights,
science and technology from the British, and reformed their government into a centralized political
system. In addition, many new legal measures were taken to protect the women and children of India.

Embryo transfer is the fourth step.
Embryos transfer is much like a pelvic exam. The fertility doctor will place a flexible catheter into
your cervix. When it is positioned about 1 2cm from the top of the uterus, the embryos are released.
Then, a serum pregnancy test will be performed two weeks after egg retrieval.
5. Hormonal support during the luteal phase with progesterone is the fifth and final step.
Studies have shown that pregnancy and delivery rates are higher when women receive luteal phase
support with progesterone after embryo transfer. Progesterone is a hormone that is produced by the
ovaries to prepare the uterine lining for implantation.
Progesterone can be administered intramuscularly or by using a vaginal progesterone product called
Crinone. Whichever method is selected, your physician will administer progesterone starting 2 days
after egg retrieval until you take a pregnancy test. Depending on your serum progesterone levels, the
progesterone may be continued after you get pregnant.

The Effects Of The Holocaust
Between the years 1939 and 1945, the Allies and the Axis Powers were fighting World War II. The
Nazis were steadily rising into power and began the slow first acts of what would later be known as
the Holocaust. Holocaust is a Geek term meaning execution, or sacrifice, of an entire group involving
fire. The Jewish population of Europe went through years of horrific events and many lost their hope,
family, and their inner selves. Their stories and legacies have lived on and will continue to leave a
lasting impact on our world for many years to come. During the Holocaust, the Nazi Regime took the
Jewish community through a very traumatic period of suffering, discrimination, and oppression. Long
before the Holocaust, Jews were already not accepted into the society very well. The Nazis were not
the first official group who did not agree with them; in fact many believed in Anti Semitism.
Christians were often rude to Jews because they remained faithful to their own traditions and refused
to convert to Christianity. Martin Luther, who believed Jews were venomous, began multiple attacks
harassing Jewish people because they would not accept his new beliefs. However, the Enlightment
emphasized the importance of religious tolerance, and Napoleon took away restrictions from Jews
during the French Revolution. A man named Adolf Hitler had a very strong hatred for all Jewish
people. He believed they were responsible for society s troubles as well as ruining Germany s

Franklin D Roosevelt Qualities
My great leader is the late president Franklin D. Roosevelt. Roosevelt was an American statesman and
a political leader in the 1900 s. He served as America s 32nd President of the United States from 1933
to 1945. Roosevelt is widely considered one of the best presidents the U.S. has ever had, for a wide
array of reasons. First, Roosevelt was bafflingly charismatic. With the combination of the fact that he
was handsome, as well as a great orator, he was able to capture the attention of many American
people. Within a week of entering office, he delivered his first fireside chat, which has been hailed as a
stellar performance by FDR. Charisma is an important quality to have as a government official,
because it allows you to relate to and befriend ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When he was 39, he contracted polio, which left him paralyzed and handicapped. The way he handled
the sickness was with strength and courage, and he never stopped doing his very best for the American
people and inspiring the public. Having a strong moral character is very important when working in
big government, because having this quality will help to steer you in the right direction for the masses
of people you would be making decisions for. If one lacks moral character, they are more likely to
make self serving decisions based on the idea of a payout rather than on the idea of a positive change
for their citizens. Another quality that is important, and also demonstrated by FDR is self confidence.
This is important because if you don t have courage and confidence in your decisions, how can you
expect anyone else to be confident in your decisions. In order to inspire others and make them trust
you, you first have to show them that you know what you are doing and you are comfortable and sure
in your choices and changes. By demonstrating self confidence, the public will be more likely to
consider and agree with what you are trying to do, because it is easier to believe in people who believe

The Plausible Theory Of Perception Direct Realism Or...
Title
Which is the more plausible theory of perception Direct Realism or Indirect Realism?
Introduction
In this essay I will consider two common theories that attempt to account for the problem of
perception, namely Direct, and Indirect realism. I will outline several arguments against direct realism
and show how the theory of indirect realism more plausably accounts for the problem of perception.
Objections to the arguments against direct realism will be considered and possible counterarguments
given. This paper will consider two theories of perception that attempt to account for this problem,
namely Direct and Indirect realism, and argue against direct realism in favour of indirect realism,
leading to the conclusion that indirect realism is the more plausable of the two.
Background
The nature of perception, such as sight, touch, and smell appears intuitively straightforward; direct and
immediate access to a mind independent world (naive realism). We feel as if we looking through our
eyes, as if they are open windows to an external world, and when we feel the texture of objects
through haptic (touch) perception, it feels as if we are directly touching the external surface of a mind
independent objecting. Sitting on a couch it intuitively feels as if one is looking at an object which
exists independent of ones visual perception (e.g. the couch continues to look green and have a soft
texture even if one leaves the room). The problem of perception arises from the existence

Relationship Between Jason And Medea In Jesmyn Ward s...
In the book Salvage the Bones, by Jesmyn Ward, there is a parallel storyline between Esch s life and
the ancient myth of Jason and Medea. Throughout the book, Esch constantly compares herself with
Medea, while referring to Manny as Jason. Both Esch and Medea are forced to cope with the fact that
the two people whom they loved and cherished most in the world have deceived them. As Esch s
character comes of age throughout the book, her decreasing dependency on Manny helps her gain
strength, just as Medea did once she realized the depth of Jason s betrayal. Although the relationship
of Jason and Medea mirrors that of Esch and Manny in some important ways, Esch s story ends better

Luckily for Esch, not only did she have three loving brothers, but she also had all of her brother s
friends, whom looked after her like she was their little sister. After Hurricane Katrina had ended, Esch
had a chat with her dad, in which he was convinced that Esch should keep the baby. This made her
more confident, to know that she had not only her brother s approval, but also her father s approval
(247). Esch s family and friends are accepting of her pregnancy, and they all even offer to help take
care of her and the baby, in hopes that this baby will be the miracle which will bring the family
together. After this conversation with her dad, Big Henry also confronts her about this conversation,
which he has accidentally listened on. He asked her Who the daddy? , and when she cautiously replies
with It don t have no daddy , he caringly replies to her You wrong...this baby got multiple daddies ,
which shows that even though he isn t a part of the family, he is implying that he will assist in raising
the baby, along with her real family (254). Medea is not as fortunate as Esch. After being betrayed by
Jason, she had no one to turn to, not even her own family. So, to take revenge on Jason, she resorts to
murdering all of their children, and even his new bride, leaving him with no one, the way that he left

Every time I had a caring moment with a patient it was not always a positive outcome. With some
patients when we try to hold their hand or take care of them or give them the encouragement or
support that they re looking and it backfires. The patient becomes upset defensive and has a belief that
you are not addressing their needs as quickly or as appropriately as they would like. When walking
into a patient s units in pain and you put your hand on their hand the offer some support turns into the
patient wondering why you re there and why can t they have anything more for pain and so on. When
dealing with the public especially in healthcare you must always remember that the patient is the
customer. When we are taking care of the customer that we must do it as respect fully and as
efficiently as possible. The patient needs to feel that they are feeling as if they are the only one that
matter. Usually when creating the caring moment, the patient is very receptive to words of

Oligopolistic Companies and How They Compete
Oligopolistic is a market structure which under the imperfect competition. According to Sloman
Garratt, oligopoly is only few large firms share a large portion of industry and control the market.
When we hear that a term about Big three , Big four or Big five it can be set down as oligopolistic
industry. In the oligopoly market competition, depends on the firms produce homogeneous or
differentiated products and it will be categorize as homogeneous oligopoly or differentiated oligopoly.
As Mcconell Brue, 2008 stated because of the small number of firms, oligopolistic have worthy of
consideration command over the prices and they have to think about their competitors conceivable
reaction to their product`s price, product`s quality, advertising outlays and so on. The few large firms
are interdependent but they have to always be awake of competitor`s action to maintain their firm can
stand strong in the industries. Oligopolistic have a strong barriers of entry for the new competitors,
which alike and dedicative by the pure monopoly. According to Jackson, Mclver Wilson stated
oligopolistic industries have a large economies of scale have to be consider for the new competitors
because they must have a large amount of capital to invest heavy on the technology in the beginning,

The Importance Of Cultural Literacy
Cultural literacy is not a well known word in today s society but being culturally literate is essential to
be an active participant in one s nation. Cultural literacy is the ability to understand a culture enough
to be able to participate in it actively. In modern society, a large portion of Americans, especially in
the younger generations, are not culturally literate and this poses a problem for the future of our
community and our economy.
Often fads are the defining points of recent cultural changes for example in the 70 s the hippie
movement was a defining portion of American culture and even global culture. If someone did not
understand that reference in that time, they would be unable to follow media, news, and possibly even
everyday interaction. By examining the economic trends of manias, one seeks to gain a deeper
understanding of how they affect our culture on a deeper level. As the very nature of fads is to have an
unexplained and short lived popularity predicting economic trends of crazes is very nearly impossible
to do accurately although there have been attempts to model fads (Plott and Smith). This can have a
devastating effect on the economy and at the very least severely hurt individual investors. When the
demand for certain fads becomes uncontrollable, they may cause an economic bubble to form. A
financial bubble is when the price of an object dramatically outweighs its actual value (Singh) an
example of this is the demand for twinkies during the Hostess

Allegory in Edward Albee s The American Dream Essay
Allegory in Edward Albee s The American Dream
Our understanding of Edward Albee s achievement in The American Dream (1960) has come a long
way since 1961 when Martin Esslin hailed it as a brilliant first example of an American contribution to
the Theatre of the Absurd 1 and 1966 when Nicholas Canaday, Jr. labeled it America s best example of
what has come to be known as the theatre of the absurd. 2
The shrewdest assessment of absurdism in Albee is by Brian Way, who shows convincingly that,
although Albee has successfully mastered the techniques of theatrical absurdism, he has nevertheless
shied away from embracing the metaphysics that the style implies.3 That is, Albee knows that Theatre
of the Absurd is an absorption in art ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Albee s title, on the other hand, is rich in intellectual and moral substance, since it refers to a host of
ideas and feelings associated with the fondest hopes of participants in the American experience, both
historic and contemporary. The title is also a fitting thematic label for the play since the dialogue
explicitly refers to the American Dream after the Young Man appears on stage. Ionesco s title like all
titles, an authorial comment on the text rightly says that the play lacks meaning; Albee s says that it
refers to a lot of meaning.
That meaning is most obviously associated with the Young Man, since he is specifically identified as
the American Dream by the dialogue of the play. The less obvious but more important meaning is
embodied in Grandma. The goal of this essay will be to clarify how Grandma s character and
experience bear most of the meaning of the American Dream that Albee wants to communicate in this
play. As we shall see, that meaning fits squarely within the mainstream American humanist tradition
stretching back to the early, idealistic years of the American republic.
Even though she is a physical disaster, many critics have noticed various kinds of attractive qualities
in Grandma. Don D. Moore finds her the most appealing, the most refreshing and the wisest figure in
the play. 8 Canaday, who has written the most about Grandma, praises her for her realism, clear vision,

Snare Drum History
A paradiddle is a rudiment used to practice accents and tempo on the snare drum. Once one learns the
paradiddle, it could be identified in nearly every rock song. However, without the snare drum, the
paradiddle would not have that same groove that it does today. Meaning that music would not be the
same either. The snare drum is the catalyst for a clear majority of the music played today. The snare
drum dates to as far as 6000 BCE in Mesopotamia. Back then, it was simply a square piece of clay
that could be hit with a stick. The idea of a strand on the drum did not exist until the 1400s with the
Tabor at its prime. The Swiss and Ottoman empires used it during military expeditions. The Tabor
evolved into what s known as a field drum , which is a larger drum that was carried by a strap. This
drum still rattled every time it was struck. It wasn t until the 1600s that there was a screw used to hold
the cover of the drum down. This gave the drum the sharp and tight snapping sound heard today. It
could be argued that once the drum was made of brass, that s when it became known as the snare
drum. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Why? Because there s nothing like it. It s typically a small drum, but it can have a variety of sounds
that affect the tone and tempo of a song. The very composition of the snare itself makes a huge
difference. For instance, a triple flanged hooped snare would ring longer, making the strikes, and rolls
more intense, or more melodic. Also, metal shells are more durable, allowing heavier rim shots that
add a heavier feel to a song. Muffling the snare can also incredibly impact the sound. Some drummers
tend not to muffle it at all, leaving the sound to be pure and unadulterated. Some drummers muffle the
snare to the point where the sound is more felt and less heard. All types of snare drums serve their
purpose as a staple in any drum kit for many genres of

Indian India s Indian National Congress
Colonial History of India
Some factors that lead India to independence from England was World War II, protests, and changes in
government including the Indian National Congress. During World War II, when the Indian natives
fought alongside the colonists against the imperial forces of Hitler, they came to the realization that
they wanted independence after they finished fighting in the war . In August 1942, Mahatma Gandhi
and other Quit India activists protested for independence which was the first step to independence
after World War II. The Indian National Congress was considerably the largest and most prominent
Indian public organization, and central and defining influence of the Indian Independence Movement .
This allowed some sort of government representation of the people with the goal of ending the East
India Company s rule as a purpose.
Indian colonization began when traders were looking for a path via the oceans to trade with India
because the land route through the Middle East was cut off by the Ottoman Empire. Vasco da Gama
circumnavigated Africa and found the route to India which allowed other sailors and merchants to
come to India as well. Nations began erecting settlements near and on the Indian coastline for a safe
port for merchant ships to load, unload, and conduct business. Some of these settlements began to
evolve into colonies. By mid 19th century, England had control, either directly or indirectly, of almost
all of India. India was the hub of English

Analysis Of The Dead By Charlie Higson
This summer, I read the book The Dead by Charlie Higson is a novel about a large group of kids, left
to live by themselves without guidance from their parents. In this run down setting of London,
England, people who are over the age of 16 turn into kid hunting, flesh eating zombies. The younger
kids are forced to live on their own, fighting for life against the wrath of the Adults. The message
Higson showed in his book is: after people are forced to rely on themselves without experience, their
lack of experience and knowledge will lead them to failure.
In the novel, the kids face constant fear and by telling the story from a 3rd person omniscient point of
view, Higson can really show how they are forced to only appeal their need for survival. The adults
are a mysterious entity to the kids. Since they are doing things only to live, their actions are limited.
We think there s something in us that adults need to eat in order to stay alive, (375). They move in
groups to keep support between the kids, and by doing this, their fear of adults is slightly eased.
Connecting the fact that the kids are living in fear to that London is big, the kids are constantly
moving. The possibilities of adults attacking the kids at any point are endless. And when it had gotten
really bad, when those adults who d gotten sick but hadn t died had started to turn on the kids,
attacking them like wild animals, (8). These kids start to constantly move because of their fear. This
causes

What Is Martin Luther King Persuasive Speech
One of the greatest to ever to be know to be part of the human race was Martin Luther King Jr. A
renowned member of the civil rights movement in the 40s and 50s , he paved a way for the coming
generations to not only stand, but also speak out on the inequalities of mankind in this country. In
order to create a new everlasting hope, for every generation to come. Today we celebrate a man for his
audacity to end the discrimination in its tracks, and continue striving and hoping for a better world
from everyone. We must accept finite hope, but never lose infinite hope. From the inspirational words
of the great man himself, I myself have merely become an advocate of the message that Dr. King has
belayed upon me. The idea that in the process of delivering his message and trying to get his message
heard there would be hardships and disappointments through the course of attempting to fight the
injustice. However, the true character would appear knowing that this disappointment would only be
temporary or finite. In search of an eternal hope that could ultimately present itself with the win of
their infinite goals. Myself has always been an advocate of showing the best character that you can
possible be any time to represent yourself. After reading Dr.King s quote from his unfathomable
speech, I recognize a clear motivation to myself to continue being the person that I hath am. From
time and time again I have bestowed myself as a respectable gentleman. As this essay is not a place
for me to bloat about astonishing qualities. I do however, want to state that if my strive to always have
a great character type is in such similarity to the some of the same principles that the man himself
preached, I am more motivated than ever to continue this process to always have a strong character to
continue pushing and striving for something better in this world even when all odds are against you.

In the first project, I knew how to write a professional email. Actually, I never use email in my high

mails or texts are different with official email. On the one hand, every email must include a formal

the rule of the email, and we need to say dear even if the recipient is a old man. On the other hand, the
language choose in text is unlimited. The abbreviations are very common in text, because it is more
convenience. But we cannot use ASAP in official email, whatever Professors understand it means as
soon as possible or not.
The second project was the very difficult assignment for me. I need to make an interview with others.

Symbolism In Woman At Point Zero
Woman at Point Zero Through Symbolism
The main point of clarification and interpretation in the story Woman at Point Zero is symbolism.
More specifically, symbolism in the story represents a reference, emotion, or an object that provides a
meaning that goes up and beyond the written meaning. From the contemporary feminist perspective,
the author Nawal El Saadawis uses the narrative speeches and symbolism to express and demonstrate
the fight and the struggle of women under marginalization and alienation. Furthermore, the reflection
in the defiance and the complexities that override the behavior of the protagonists has found its way in
the modern world. Similarly, the reflection on the story Woman at Point Zero provides a clear
reference to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In light of the above statement, the narrator alludes that only the woman has the power to determine
her value and not the man. Furthermore, Sharifa tells Firdaus that the higher she prices herself, the
more her worth increases (Saadawi 57). On the other hand, she realizes that the value of her body to
men has a monetary value attached to it. Since men desired pleasure in the novel, she had an innate
advantage when the men depended on her. Her value improved as she strengthened and continued to
build her self esteem; therefore, the more confident she felt, the more value of price she added to her
services. Intriguingly, the author uses narration to demonstrate symbolism and express a
comprehensive understanding of the predicament of women in the novel. For instance, Firdaus tears
the money just to demonstrate that money had little power over her at the time because of the
transformation she had undertaken to improve her value (Saadawi 49). Still, she wants to be paid for
more than the money for the job she does. What s more, Firdaus wants the society to recognize her as

War Is A Human Endeavor
War is a human endeavor. Humanity continually pursues solutions to counter evolving threats with the
end of preserving power while also enabling peace. Civilizations resort to war to maintain their
perception of this equilibrium. Defined threats and adversaries have changed throughout history,
however, the essence of human nature and the base concept of conflict itself have not. Carl von
Clausewitz s theories on warfare capture the relationship between humanity and its application of war,
remaining relevant in today s era through their pensive explanations of timeless philosophical
principles regarding the concept of war. These theories regarding war in politics, the key factors
affecting war, and the extent that war is applied are inherently interconnected, providing insight on the
relationships between humanity and its application of war.
One of Clausewitz s most prevalent theories is that war is an instrument of politics, or as stated in his
work On War, When whole communities go to war...the reason lies in some political situation, and the
occasion is always due to some political object. War, therefore, is an act of politics. War in itself as
defined by Oxford dictionary is a state of armed conflict between different nations or states or
different groups within a nation or state. Furthermore, politics is defined by Oxford as the activities
associated with the governance of a country or area, especially the debate between parties having
power. The 1648 Treaty

Sierra Leone Imperialism
Sierra Leone is one of the many countries that are on the coast of West Africa. A rich country fell
victim to barbaric people. Sierra Leone was named but not founded, by Portuguese sailor, Pedro de

start of their rule over West Africa. Great Britain brainwashed, rapped, and robbed Sierra Leone.
Sierra Leone was robbed of their people by Great Britain, Portuguese, French, and Dutch before they
was officially colonized. Portuguese traders arrived at the harbor. By 1495 they had built a trading

Psychological And Psychological Factors Of Terrorism
The ever evolving subject of terrorism and terrorists is the subject of significant study worldwide. The
psychological and behavioral factors involved in terrorism are one of the most studied issues. It has
implications across the board for both the detection and deterrence of terrorism. How terrorists
communicate and the influence that it plays in growing terroristic ideology, mission, and goals are also
of significant importance, as well.
There are many things can be seen in the psychology of terrorism. Unfortunately there is not good
science on psychological factors of terrorism; there are theories and educated opinions (DeAngelis,
2009). The one overarching factor is the fear with which terrorism is based. By definition, terrorism is
acts that cause terror by one group on to another, usually for political goals ( Terrorism , n.d.). Why
people suffer from these fears is related to their psychological behavior. Terrorist activity can be
described as fostering a sense of helplessness and hopelessness, in demonstrating the incompetence of
the authorities, destroying a sense of security and safety, and in provoking inappropriate reactions
from individuals and authorities. (Alexander Klein, 2005). Terrorists themselves are affected by
psychological behavior; their own and that of others around them. They may even be affected by the
behavior of victims and potential victims. Osama Bin Laden has even been known to admit that in the

Power of Buyers
In the United States, most states require three separate components in the supply chain: producers,
distributors, and retailers. This three tiered system insulates distributors, as beer producers are not
permitted to sell beer directly to retailers or consumers.[5] The regulations in place augment the power
of buyers. Furthermore, distributors purchase volume as a percent of the focal industry s output is
high. Conversely, the relative power of distributors is dependent on how reliant their revenues are on
beer sales. Overall, due to the relatively larger number of distributors compared to beer manufacturers,
the dominant position of the three largest brewers, as well as the brand loyalty created by the
manufacturers through brand differentiation, the power of buyers is moderate.
Substitutes
The threat of substitutes is high for the beer industry, and specifically for this strategic group.
According to the trade group Beverage Industry, alcohol beverage consumption per capita has risen
since 2000 at around one percent per year, which suggests that consumers on average are not
substituting non alcoholic beverages for the alcohol they currently consume[6]. Since 1994,
consumption per capita has increased for the three major substitutes premium beers, wine, and spirits.

Branches of Government and UCC
BRANCHES OF GOVERNMENT AND UCC 1.FLOWCHART OF BRANCHES OF
GOVERNMENT The government is a single term yet comprised of several different components that
collaborate to run the business of the country by making, stating, implementing and ensuring law. The
US government has three branches namely legislation, executive and judiciary (Three Branches of
Government, 2008). 2. DESIGNATE TWO UCC CLAUSES THAT ALIGN WITH EACH BRANCH
The term UCC stands for Uniform Commercial Code that was published in 1952 (Uniform
Commercial Code, 2013). The code tells how to correspond the sales law and other business and
commercial transactions in America. There are two clauses of codes that deal with each branch at one
level or the other: a. If the court as a matter of law finds the contract or any clause of the contract to
have been unconscionable at the time it was made the court may refuse to enforce the contract or it
may enforce the remainder of the contract without the unconscionable clause, or it may so limit the
application of any unconscionable clause as to avoid any unconscionable result (What Is the Uniform
Commercial Code (UCC)? n.a). b. When it is claimed or appears to the court that the contract or any
clause thereof may be unconscionable the parties shall be afforded a reasonable opportunity to present
evidence as to its commercial setting, purpose, and effect to aid the court in making the determination

You robbed me of something very precious and I will never forgive you for that. Mr. McKinney, I give
you life in the memory of one who no longer lives. May you have a long life and may you thank
Matthew every day for it. Those were the words said by Dennis Shepard at the sentencing of Aaron
McKinney, one of the men who tortured, robbed, and murdered his son Matthew Shepard. He was
given a life sentence. States must inflict a harsher punishment for people who commit gay violence
crimes because over the years hate crimes based on sexual orientation have become the third highest
category reported.
Many people claim that the violence happenes not because of sexual orientation, but because it is just
an act to be committed. According ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 2002, the FBI Uniform Crime Reports affirmed that between 1991 and 2001, crimes based on
sexuality had rose 16.7 percent (HRC 6). Research done by the Human Rights Campaign showed that
Arkansas, Indiana, South Carolina and Wyoming do not have laws protecting homosexuals in any
way. In 2003, the Local Law Enforcement Enhancement Act was introduced to congress. The bill
would give local law enforcement officials the resources they need to fight hate crimes based on actual
or perceived sexual orientation, gender or disability. Senator Gordon Smith, a sponsor for the bill said:
A government s first duty is to protect and defend its citizens. Our laws should do that by reflecting
our highest values, not by sheltering our lowest fears. ... Over the past several years, Americans have
been listening with their hearts, not just their ears, and they are ready for a hate crimes bill.
The Human Rights Campaign is still lobbying Congress to pass the bill.
In 1998 the Florida Times Union wrote that the Supreme Court overturned a death sentence against a
man who repeatedly killed homosexual men. The court ruled that prosecutors should not have
admitted his hatred towards gay people. Justices ordered

Essay on Madam Curie
Madame Curie, as the scientist is venerably called, was a true pioneer of her time. Growing up amidst
political turmoil and sexual discrimination she was able to persevere with austere determination to
make breakthrough scientific findings, while also fighting for humanitarian betterment. In a long list
of renowned female scientists Madam Curie stands at the top of the list not only for her findings, but
also for her efforts to aid those with the worst afflictions; she is long remembered as a pioneer, a
leader, a truly gifted scientist, and a humanitarian who died while helping others to live. Madam Curie
was born Maria Sklodowska on November 7, 1867 in Warsaw, the city that had once been the capital
Poland, but that was at the time of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While working as a governess north of Warsaw, Maria read books of all subjects searching for her
calling. Despite the fact that the Russian Czar had outlawed the teaching of laboratory science in
Poland, Maria was drawn to chemistry. It was during this time that Maria became enchanted with
Chemistry, and became determined to pursue her education in this field. During this time Maria was
also secretly studying chemistry in a floating university that would teach outlawed subjects in
changing locations to avoid suspicion of the Czar. These students would also conduct experiments in
museums to put their knowledge to test without Russian interference. After working for roughly two
years Maria had saved the money required to travel and pay tuition costs at the famous Sorbonne
University in Paris. To avoid suspicion on Polish decent Maria changed her name Marie and
undertook her studies. Although Marie was not as well prepared for the coursework as her classmates,
her desire and determination to learn separated her from her peers. Due to her outstanding results in
Physics Marie was given a scholarship by the Society for the Encouragement of National Industry.
The Society paid her to test the magnetic properties of various steels, and provided her with a lab to
conduct research. This lab also housed Pierre Curie, who had conducted brilliant research in
Magnetism himself. The two began a relationship of love and

Essay On The Subconscious And Subhuman Temper In Wuthering...
The Subconscious and Subhuman Temper
In Young Goodman Brown , Wuthering Heights, and Hamlet, subconscious and subhuman tendencies
indicate the detrimental tolls of obsession inflicted upon the main character. Dreams symbolize the
onset of an obsession and imply that the seemingly harmless nightmares we experience may be more
than merely a bad dream and instead serve as an indicator of the deterioration of our mental stability.
Animalistic vocabulary dehumanizes and reduces characters to a more primitive form causing readers
to question their understanding of what it truly means to be human. Ultimately, this corruption of the
mind leads to undesirable thoughts and seemingly inhuman attributes, all out of the victim s control.
In all cases, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In chapter nine, she discloses her fear that her dream may be a warning of what will become of her if
she neglects her heart s desires and succumbs to her obsession with wealth by marrying Edgar Linton.
Distressed and in search of consolation, Catherine asks her maid, Nelly, do you never dream queer
dreams? (Brontë 49). Catherine proceeds to say, I ve dreamt in my life dreams that have stayed with
me ever after, and changed my ideas: they ve gone through me, like wine through water, and altered
the colour of my mind (49). The simile used here, like wine through water, is symbolic of herself and
her obsession. The water, pure and clean, is herself and the wine, addictive and manipulative, is her
obsession. Once wine is poured into water, they combine to create a new solution. This analogy shows
the way that her fundamental self and obsession have intertwined over time and the effects have been
irreversible. In her most recent dream, she finds herself in heaven but feels misplaced. She fears that
this dream is foreshadowing how she will feel if she marries Edgar Linton. Although she would
possess a desirable status, much like how many yearn to go to heaven, it is not what she truly wants.
In a more literal sense, her marriage to Edgar would be the death of her true

Technology And The Human Computer Interface
There are certain technology programs that are emerging in the software industry that have key uses.
These current technologies are those that surround the human computer interface. As a software
engineer, I will use this paper to describe the term Haptic Feedback, its key uses and why it is needed.
In addition, I will compare the various types of human memory mentioning their impact on the human
computer interface. I will also give a detailed description of the potential outcomes of not making use
of consistency in the human computer interface, summarize and explain the steps of user centric
design process and the role of human motion in the human computer interface.
Haptic Feedback Haptic can be defined as the science of applying the touch sensation as well as
control to guide human interactions with the computer applications. This is done using the special
devices such as data gloves and joysticks to enable users to receive computer application feedback in
form of a felt body part sensation, especially the hand. In that regard, it can be deemed that Haptic
Feedback is the feedback that users derive from the interaction with computer applications that is only
felt, not heard or seen. The key uses of Haptic Feedback are in the image outlines delineated by the
feel sensation in a way like object simulation in a location near the user. In this way, it can be used in
the training of individuals to perform tasks that require hand and eye coordination, including space

For quite some time now the stock market and the dollar have been locked in a reverse correlation.
When the dollar went up the market went down and so forth.
In particular 2009 has seen that correlation play out in dramatic fashion. The stock market had a
bottom in November 2008 and then the final bottom of the bear market run down in March 2009.
The stock market as measured by the Dow 30 industrials bottomed in March at which time the Dollar
index negatively correlated by peaking in price. In all the retracements and minor corrections that
occurred, since then, in the Dow the dollar also experienced a similar but opposite reaction.
Within the last week or so the dollar has begun to react with slightly more strength and the market
seems to be attempting to dislodge that inverse correlation between a falling dollar and a rising
market.
On Friday Dec. 4th. the Dow was up strongly in the morning with a rising dollar. In the weeks and
months prior to this if the dollar had risen strongly the market almost inevitably would have fallen.
The Dow did give back

Essay Comparing Beowulf and The Saga of King Hrolf Kraki
Beowulf and The Saga of King Hrolf Kraki
There are so many similarities between the hero of the poem Beowulf and The Saga of King Hrolf
Kraki, an Iceland saga representing 1000 years of oral traditions prior to the 1300 s when it was
written, that these similarities cannot be attributed solely to coincidence.
The Cambridge History of English and American Literature states that the hero of the poem, Beowulf
himself, may be the same person as Bodvar Biarki, the chief of Hrolfr Kraki s knights (v1, ch3, s3,
n13). George Clark in The Hero and the Theme mentions: The form of Beowulf taken as a whole
suggests both the Bear s Son folktale type (especially as we find it in Scandinavia) and the combat
myth . . . . (286). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bodvar avenges wrongs done to his family by killing the one who did the injustices; Beowulf avenges
wrongs done to his family: he avenged Heardred s death, I repaid Hygelac ... with my bright sword, I
was the killer of Daghrefin.
When King Hring took sick and died, Bodvar became ruler of the kingdom; when Heardred was killed
in battle, Beowulf became king. Bodvar thought of others first; he found support for his mother before
leaving his people; Beowulf likewise placed the concerns of others before his own, putting his life in
jeopardy in order to satisfy a family debt to King Hrothgar for paying wergild for the hero s father s
indiscretion as a young man.
Bodvar leaves Gautland to travel to the kingdom of the Danes; Beowulf leaves Geatland to travel to
the kingdom of the Danes. Bodvar goes to King Hrolf, widely known for his generosity, magnificence
and courage; Beowulf goes to King Hrothgar, widely known for the same virtues. In Denmark Bodvar
meets a farmer who thinks that the hero is imposing; in Denmark Beowulf meets a coast guard who
considers him imposing. The farmer s wife says to Bodvar, Your hand seems to be strong. . . . (48);
Beowulf s handgrip was so strong that he ripped off Grendel s arm and shoulder; he had the strength
of thirty in his mighty hand grip

Summary Of The Article Deeply Flawed By Lance Armstrong
The article Deeply flawed. Lance Armstrong admits using performance enhancing drugs is about
Lance Armstrong admitting to using performance enhancing drugs in his sport of cycling. It outlines
key concepts of the what he said in the Oprah interview. It explores how he took testosterone and
human growth hormone, as well as EPO which is a naturally occurring substance in the body which
stimulates red blood cell growth (it increase the amount of oxygen that can travel to your muscles,
which improves recovery and endurance) and why he did it. He said to do it because everyone was,
Armstrong believed he wouldn t have been able to win his 7 Tour de France titles without doping. The

The article has increased my knowledge on how EPO, testosterone and human growth hormones are
the most commonly used drugs in cycling. It explored how the performance level of cyclist s was so
high and this was because they were using performance enhancing drugs. I realised that the cyclist
was taking the drugs because everyone was and there was very little chance of being caught.
Armstrong admitted to using them because everyone in the field was and he believed he couldn t win
without taking them. Armstrong at the time didn t even consider it cheating. It was just something you
did if you wanted to win. Drugs in cycling lead to an environment where people weren t winning
because they had trained the hardest and had the most ability but rather an environment where they
didn t even consider taking performance enhancing drugs as cheating. The consequences and prospect
of being caught were always there, but the cyclist were willing to cheat even though they could
potentially lose everything; respect, titles and trust. The article also increased my knowledge on how
they got away with it for so long. The drug use in cycling was occurring so much over Armstrong s
time because the drug testers didn t have a way to find out whether the cyclist were

Self-Images and Selfies
Self Image and Selfies: A Freudian Analysis
Chosen as Oxford dictionaries as the 2013 word of the year, the term selfie refers to a photograph that
one has taken of oneself, typically with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media
website . The term has made a definite mark on popular culture, the frequency usage increased over
17,000% in the 2012 2013 year (BBC News). With the rise in popularity there has also been much
discussion on the possible effects of the selfie phenomena. Some articles argue that taking a high
number of selfies is a sign of the increasing narcissism and self objectification of modern culture that
may lead to mental health issues such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Body Dysmorphic
Disorder. Others suggest that taking selfies empowers the individual and promotes healthy levels of
self esteem. While viewpoints on the topic tend to be diametrically divided, a Freudian perspective
provides support for both views, as the topic is more complex than it first seems.
In order to understand the interest in selfies, their ramifications, and to better apply a Freudian
perspective, it is important to first discuss the cultural prevalence and significance. Selfies are
widespread due to the ease of access of the technology. People everywhere, from the US President and
the Pope to astronauts in space to elementary school children have the ability to capture photos of
themselves and have been involved in selfies. The popularity of the practice is

Theme Of Brutality In The Book Thief
In The Book Thief, Markus Zusak uses his characters to demonstrate the theme that there is both
beauty and brutality in human nature. The characters that are examples of the novel are Rosa
Huberman, Hans Huberman and Max Vandenberg. Rosa exemplifies the theme through her language
and her tolerance. Hans exemplifies the theme through his interactions with Liesel. Max shows both
characteristics through the novel. Rosa, Hans and Max are prime example of how human nature can
have both beauty and brutality. Firstly, Rosa Huberman is an example of the beauty and brutality in
human nature through her beating Liesel, the language she use, and her tolerance of Max. Rosa beats
Liesel for the smallest offenses. When Rosa lost some of her laundry clients she blames Liesel. Rosa
uses offensive language towards both Liesel and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Max shows the beauty in human nature by leaving the Huberman household when he felt that it was
too dangerous for the family to let him stay there. On the day that Han gives the Jewish man the bread
it draws too much attention to the family. Hans wanted Max to stay away for a few days and then
come back, but when Hans comes to where he was hiding out, Hans finds a note that Max left You ve
done enough (398). Another way that Max shows the beauty in human nature is when Max leaves a
gift for Liesel. It was a book called The Word Shaker . The book about Liesel and how the words she
uses matters. Max did not want Liesel to read Mein Kamp so he tore the book up and turned the book
into a quality book. Max shows the brutality in human nature when he says When death captures me,
he will feel my fist on his face. (189). Max s first response to death would be to punch him in the face.
Max Vandenberg exemplifies the theme because of the beauty he shows when he writes a book for
Liesel and the brutality he shows when wants to punch death in the

Refusing to bow to the demands of his employer, Bartleby represents a challenge to the materialistic ideology by refusing to comply with simple requests made by his employer. The story begins with the employer having trouble finding good employees. This is until the employer hires Bartleby. At first, Bartleby works hard and does his job so well that everyone has a hard time imagining what it would be like without him. This is significant because it shows that he still uses polite wording even though he has given up living. He courteously refuses to eat and chooses to live for as long as he prefers to live and curls up against one of the prison walls. This refusal, even in the face of death, shows an almost courageous side of Bartleby. He knows that he will most likely die, but he still musters up the courage to continue his fight. Due to his refusal of food, he will be buried without sustenance for the afterlife, a final nod to his status as a man without power, appetite, or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Because of the complexity of tumors, the origin of the disease was unknown until the late 19th century and the search for treatment or a cure came even later. The 20th century saw the greatest progression of cancer research, with twins being crucial to such studies. Twin studies were used as an important method in the field of cancer study. Scientists and researchers did not pay particular attention to twins and zygosity before the 20th century. Her father John was a carpenter, sharecropper, and a Baptist preacher; and her mother Lucy, a former schoolteacher. Within a year of Zora s birth, the family moved to Eatonville, Florida; a town, which held historical significance as the first, incorporated Black municipality in the United States. In 1904, thirteen year old Zora was devastated by the death of her mother. Later that same year, her unaffectionate father removed her from school and sent her to care for her brother s children. In 1925, Hurston headed to New York, just as the Harlem Renaissance was at its crest. She enrolled in Barnard College to study under Franz Boas, the father of anthropology. While there, Hurston married an old Howard boyfriend named Herbert Sheen, but the marriage was short lived. After graduation, Zora returned to her hometown of Eatonville to collect folklore as material for her blossoming writing career. The late 1920 s marked a resurgence of her literary muse as Hurston published several works, and consequently gained financial sponsorship from wealthy New York patrons. The 1930 s and early 1940 s marked the peak of Hurston s literary career. It was during this time that she completed graduate work at Columbia, published four novels and an autobiography, and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. Her writing brought her to the Caribbean where she became so intrigued by the practice of voodoo that she began incorporating these supernatural elements into her novels and stories. Although her work was receiving increasing acclaim from the white literati of New York, Zora often felt under attack from many members of the Black Arts Movement. She termed these detractors, members of the quot;niggerati quot;, for being close minded in their criticism of her racial politics. By the mid 1940s Hurston s writing career was faltering. The process of selecting knowledge and highlighting that takes place when we put our knowledge into words to achieve the communicator. Since emphasis is simply given stress to subject and indicating what is important or less important, slanting by use of emphasis is unavoidable, both in speech and writing. Emotion is no substitute for reason. To communicate clearly, you need to choose words that convince your audience of your fairness. Using loaded words does not accomplish this. When you hold strong opinions, it is easy to slip into biased or emotionally loaded language. Slanted language usually will not convince a careful person to agree with your point, and may cause them to doubt your ability to convey the facts fairly. Slanted or biased language often causes the hearer to feel manipulated, wary or hostile. While those who already agree with you may become more convinced of your point, those who disagree may become annoyed, and dig in harder against your position. There are three major types of slanting: False implication, a careful selection of the facts, and innuendo (suggestion). False implication: A true statement is made in such a way so as to imply something else, which turns out be false. A careful selection of the facts: The fallacy equivalent is suppressed evidence. Innuendo: A covert allusion to something not directly said. This is very similar to false implication. Once we have built our personal store of knowledge by selecting what we want to notice. It was easiest for me to just set apart a time each night to journal about a positive experience, write down three things I am grateful for, and pray. For me writing three things I was grateful for each day was the aspect of this challenge that increased my happiness the most. It is easy for me to just think about all the negative aspects of my life and not really think about all the positives, so by writing them down each day it made me realize how much I have to be grateful for. I realized that most of the day I would focus on the bad things that happened, so it was nice to focus on all the good parts of my life. When I started the challenge, ... Completing a random act of kindness each day was somewhat challenging at first because I would forget about doing it, and I would remember later at night and have to do something before going to bed. However later in the challenge I found it much easier to remember to complete these random acts of kindness. After completing these acts of kindness, I felt much happier because it is a good feeling knowing you have helped someone. I felt good knowing that I helped someone or made their day a little better. Overall, I think this challenge increased my level of happiness because it made me realize I have a lot to be thankful for, and there are many more positives in my life than what I realized. • 7. Lab Report For The Purpose Of Gram Staining Gram Staining Formal Lab Report Miranda King Intro Microbiology Dr. Hendrickson 13 September 2017 Purpose For the purpose of the gram staining experiment was to learn this specific type of staining technique, as well as learn how distinguish the differences between Gram positive and Gram negative stains. This technique uses crystal violet stain, Gram s Iodine, Ethyl Alcohol, and Safranin. These dyes are used in order to distinguish between the different types of cells. For example, Gram positive staining will result in a purple color, and Gram negative staining will result in a red or pinkish color (University of Central Oklahoma department of biology, 2016). When a bacteria results in a purple stain it is categorized as a gram positive stain because the alcohol that was used to decolorize the bacteria was not successful. Its cell wall is made with a thick layer of peptidoglycan and holds the crystal violet color (Case, Funke, Tortora). When a bacteria results in a red or pinkish color, this means that it loses the crystal violet dye color after being decolorized and keeps the Safranin dye. It would then become categorized as a gram negative stain (Case, Funke, Tortora). A gram negative bacteria has a cell wall made of a thin layer of peptidoglycan and a thick layer of lipopolysaccharides thus holding onto the red dye (Case, Funke, Tortora). Bacteria have different shapes and these shapes determine what family they belong in. There are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Bismarck was responsible for transforming a collection of small German states, unifying them into the German empire, and becoming its first chancellor. Under the rule of William I, Bismarck was appointed as Prime Minister of Prussia for assistance over budget. Bismarck urged the king to ignore the liberals about the right to approve taxes and to instead strengthen the army. Thus making Bismarck a leader of a unification movement. Bismarck success was due in part because he was a master of Realpolitik, or realistic policies based on the needs of the state. Bismarck knew how to influence public opinion through press leaks and doctored documents and his alterations to the Ems Telegram were apart of his agenda in prompting war with France to further strengthen the German empire. • 14. Analysis Of The Film Smoke Signals As Martin Luther King Jr. said, We are not makers of history. We are made by history. History plays a part in who we are as people, configuring us through our thoughts and actions. Such an idea of history s importance in the building of one s character manifests in the movie Smoke Signals. In Smoke Signals, author Sherman Alexie uses literary devices such as costumes, flashbacks, a detailed narrative, and other devices to create two distinct characters, Victor Joseph and Thomas Builds The Fire, that symbolize a clash between Native American culture and modern society through the theme of storytelling. Victor Joseph s portrayal of the classic Native American man is exemplified by Alexie s use of dialogue, costumes, and flashbacks. For example, when Victor sees Thomas smiling as they ride their way to Arizona he says, Indians ain t supposed to smile like that. Get stoic (Smoke Signals). This example of dialogue reveals how Victor believes a Native American man should present himself traditionally, which strongly contrasts with Thomas s demeanor and appearance. Victor continues on, saying, Look at your hair, it s all braided up and stuff. You gotta free it. An Indian man ain t nothing without his hair. (Smoke Signals). Hair design is used to symbolize Victor s close ties with his ancestral past as a Native American. Additionally, Victor s comment on hair foreshadows when Victor himself cuts his hair, symbolizing a moment in which Victor embraces his traumatic past by accepting who he is as a person. In a more literal sense, flashbacks are also used to symbolize the trauma that Victor experienced in his direct past living with an alcoholic father, Arnold Joseph, who abandoned him. However, by the end of the movie, Victor embraces this past through the spreading of his father s ashes. On the other hand, Thomas Builds The Fire symbolizes an embrace of the present and future, as demonstrated by Alexie s use of oral traditions, costumes, and allegories. For instance, Thomas represents the future through his uplifting storytelling. Thomas, similarly to Victor, experienced trauma in his childhood, but it is made obvious that the two are practically opposites. To cope with the past, Thomas uses oral ... A main contributor to this division occurred over 150 years ago with Britain and its colonization of India. Colonization has had a prodigious influence on developing the modernity of a country. The East India Company effectively ruled India from 1757 to 1857, where their rise to power came to an end after the start of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 (Lawson, 35). The direct reason for the rebellion still remains unclear. It was either a planned war of independence against the British power, an uncoordinated uprising of soldiers who felt a threat to their religion and traditional practices, or simply a mutiny by soldiers who wanted increased pay and greater career opportunities (Iyer, 4). The British Crown signed the Government of India Act 1858, which liquidated the East India Company, relinquishing all of its assets to Britain, including the control of the territories seized in India. This was the beginning of the British rule over India, the British Raj, which established India as a British colony commonly referred to as British India. Under British rule, India began receiving some positive changes that modernized its society. The British had already introduced their political, social, and economic ideals to India due to the previous influence of the East India trade company. The Nazis were steadily rising into power and began the slow first acts of what would later be known as the Holocaust. The Jewish population of Europe went through years of horrific events and many lost their hope, family, and their inner selves. Their stories and legacies have lived on and will continue to leave a lasting impact on our world for many years to come. During the Holocaust, the Nazi Regime took the Jewish community through a very traumatic period of suffering, discrimination, and oppression. Long before the Holocaust, Jews were already not accepted into the society very well. The Nazis were not the first official group who did not agree with them; in fact many believed in Anti Semitism. Christians were often rude to Jews because they remained faithful to their own traditions and refused to convert to Christianity. Martin Luther, who believed Jews were venomous, began multiple attacks harassing Jewish people because they would not accept his new beliefs. Introduction In this essay I will consider two common theories that attempt to account for the problem of perception, namely Direct, and Indirect realism. I will outline several arguments against direct realism and show how the theory of indirect realism more plausably accounts for the problem of perception. Objections to the arguments against direct realism will be considered and possible counterarguments given. This paper will consider two theories of perception that attempt to account for this problem, namely Direct and Indirect realism, and argue against direct realism in favour of indirect realism, leading to the conclusion that indirect realism is the more plausable of the two. Background The nature of perception, such as sight, touch, and smell appears intuitively straightforward; direct and immediate access to a mind independent world (naive realism). We feel as if we looking through our eyes, as if they are open windows to an external world, and when we feel the texture of objects through haptic (touch) perception, it feels as if we are directly touching the external surface of a mind independent objecting. Sitting on a couch it intuitively feels as if one is looking at an object which exists independent of ones visual perception (e.g. the couch continues to look green and have a soft texture even if one leaves the room). Cultural literacy is the ability to understand a culture enough to be able to participate in it actively. In modern society, a large portion of Americans, especially in the younger generations, are not culturally literate and this poses a problem for the future of our community and our economy. Often fads are the defining points of recent cultural changes for example in the 70 s the hippie movement was a defining portion of American culture and even global culture. If someone did not understand that reference in that time, they would be unable to follow media, news, and possibly even everyday interaction. By examining the economic trends of manias, one seeks to gain a deeper understanding of how they affect our culture on a deeper level. As the very nature of fads is to have an unexplained and short lived popularity predicting economic trends of crazes is very nearly impossible to do accurately although there have been attempts to model fads (Plott and Smith). This can have a devastating effect on the economy and at the very least severely hurt individual investors. Albee s title, on the other hand, is rich in intellectual and moral substance, since it refers to a host of ideas and feelings associated with the fondest hopes of participants in the American experience, both historic and contemporary. The title is also a fitting thematic label for the play since the dialogue explicitly refers to the American Dream after the Young Man appears on stage. Ionesco s title like all titles, an authorial comment on the text rightly says that the play lacks meaning; Albee s says that it refers to a lot of meaning. That meaning is most obviously associated with the Young Man, since he is specifically identified as the American Dream by the dialogue of the play. The less obvious but more important meaning is embodied in Grandma. The goal of this essay will be to clarify how Grandma s character and experience bear most of the meaning of the American Dream that Albee wants to communicate in this play. As we shall see, that meaning fits squarely within the mainstream American humanist tradition stretching back to the early, idealistic years of the American republic. • 28. Snare Drum History A paradiddle is a rudiment used to practice accents and tempo on the snare drum. Once one learns the paradiddle, it could be identified in nearly every rock song. However, without the snare drum, the paradiddle would not have that same groove that it does today. Meaning that music would not be the same either. The snare drum is the catalyst for a clear majority of the music played today. The snare drum dates to as far as 6000 BCE in Mesopotamia. Back then, it was simply a square piece of clay that could be hit with a stick. The idea of a strand on the drum did not exist until the 1400s with the Tabor at its prime. The Swiss and Ottoman empires used it during military expeditions. The Tabor evolved into what s known as a field drum , which is a larger drum that was carried by a strap. This drum still rattled every time it was struck. It wasn t until the 1600s that there was a screw used to hold the cover of the drum down. This gave the drum the sharp and tight snapping sound heard today. It could be argued that once the drum was made of brass, that s when it became known as the snare drum. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Why? Because there s nothing like it. It s typically a small drum, but it can have a variety of sounds that affect the tone and tempo of a song. The very composition of the snare itself makes a huge difference. For instance, a triple flanged hooped snare would ring longer, making the strikes, and rolls more intense, or more melodic. Also, metal shells are more durable, allowing heavier rim shots that add a heavier feel to a song. Muffling the snare can also incredibly impact the sound. Some drummers tend not to muffle it at all, leaving the sound to be pure and unadulterated. Some drummers muffle the snare to the point where the sound is more felt and less heard. All types of snare drums serve their purpose as a staple in any drum kit for many genres of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. Indian India s Indian National Congress Colonial History of India Some factors that lead India to independence from England was World War II, protests, and changes in government including the Indian National Congress. During World War II, when the Indian natives fought alongside the colonists against the imperial forces of Hitler, they came to the realization that they wanted independence after they finished fighting in the war . In August 1942, Mahatma Gandhi and other Quit India activists protested for independence which was the first step to independence after World War II. The Indian National Congress was considerably the largest and most prominent Indian public organization, and central and defining influence of the Indian Independence Movement . This allowed some sort of government representation of the people with the goal of ending the East India Company s rule as a purpose. Indian colonization began when traders were looking for a path via the oceans to trade with India because the land route through the Middle East was cut off by the Ottoman Empire. Vasco da Gama circumnavigated Africa and found the route to India which allowed other sailors and merchants to come to India as well. Nations began erecting settlements near and on the Indian coastline for a safe port for merchant ships to load, unload, and conduct business. Some of these settlements began to evolve into colonies. By mid 19th century, England had control, either directly or indirectly, of almost all of India. India was the hub of English ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Analysis Of The Dead By Charlie Higson This summer, I read the book The Dead by Charlie Higson is a novel about a large group of kids, left to live by themselves without guidance from their parents. In this run down setting of London, England, people who are over the age of 16 turn into kid hunting, flesh eating zombies. The younger kids are forced to live on their own, fighting for life against the wrath of the Adults. The message Higson showed in his book is: after people are forced to rely on themselves without experience, their lack of experience and knowledge will lead them to failure. In the novel, the kids face constant fear and by telling the story from a 3rd person omniscient point of view, Higson can really show how they are forced to only appeal their need for survival. The adults are a mysterious entity to the kids. Since they are doing things only to live, their actions are limited. We think there s something in us that adults need to eat in order to stay alive, (375). They move in groups to keep support between the kids, and by doing this, their fear of adults is slightly eased. Connecting the fact that the kids are living in fear to that London is big, the kids are constantly moving. The possibilities of adults attacking the kids at any point are endless. And when it had gotten really bad, when those adults who d gotten sick but hadn t died had started to turn on the kids, attacking them like wild animals, (8). These kids start to constantly move because of their fear. This causes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What Is Martin Luther King Persuasive Speech One of the greatest to ever to be know to be part of the human race was Martin Luther King Jr. A renowned member of the civil rights movement in the 40s and 50s , he paved a way for the coming generations to not only stand, but also speak out on the inequalities of mankind in this country. In order to create a new everlasting hope, for every generation to come. Today we celebrate a man for his audacity to end the discrimination in its tracks, and continue striving and hoping for a better world from everyone. We must accept finite hope, but never lose infinite hope. From the inspirational words of the great man himself, I myself have merely become an advocate of the message that Dr. King has belayed upon me. The idea that in the process of delivering his message and trying to get his message heard there would be hardships and disappointments through the course of attempting to fight the injustice. However, the true character would appear knowing that this disappointment would only be temporary or finite. In search of an eternal hope that could ultimately present itself with the win of their infinite goals. Myself has always been an advocate of showing the best character that you can possible be any time to represent yourself. After reading Dr.King s quote from his unfathomable speech, I recognize a clear motivation to myself to continue being the person that I hath am. From time and time again I have bestowed myself as a respectable gentleman. As this essay is not a place for me to bloat about astonishing qualities. I do however, want to state that if my strive to always have a great character type is in such similarity to the some of the same principles that the man himself preached, I am more motivated than ever to continue this process to always have a strong character to continue pushing and striving for something better in this world even when all odds are against you. • 33. Symbolism In Woman At Point Zero Woman at Point Zero Through Symbolism The main point of clarification and interpretation in the story Woman at Point Zero is symbolism. More specifically, symbolism in the story represents a reference, emotion, or an object that provides a meaning that goes up and beyond the written meaning. From the contemporary feminist perspective, the author Nawal El Saadawis uses the narrative speeches and symbolism to express and demonstrate the fight and the struggle of women under marginalization and alienation. Furthermore, the reflection in the defiance and the complexities that override the behavior of the protagonists has found its way in the modern world. Furthermore, Sharifa tells Firdaus that the higher she prices herself, the more her worth increases (Saadawi 57). Since men desired pleasure in the novel, she had an innate advantage when the men depended on her. Her value improved as she strengthened and continued to build her self esteem; therefore, the more confident she felt, the more value of price she added to her services. Intriguingly, the author uses narration to demonstrate symbolism and express a comprehensive understanding of the predicament of women in the novel. For instance, Firdaus tears the money just to demonstrate that money had little power over her at the time because of the transformation she had undertaken to improve her value (Saadawi 49). • 36. War Is A Human Endeavor War is a human endeavor. Humanity continually pursues solutions to counter evolving threats with the end of preserving power while also enabling peace. Civilizations resort to war to maintain their perception of this equilibrium. Defined threats and adversaries have changed throughout history, however, the essence of human nature and the base concept of conflict itself have not. Carl von Clausewitz s theories on warfare capture the relationship between humanity and its application of war, remaining relevant in today s era through their pensive explanations of timeless philosophical principles regarding the concept of war. These theories regarding war in politics, the key factors affecting war, and the extent that war is applied are inherently interconnected, providing insight on the relationships between humanity and its application of war. One of Clausewitz s most prevalent theories is that war is an instrument of politics, or as stated in his work On War, When whole communities go to war...the reason lies in some political situation, and the occasion is always due to some political object. War, therefore, is an act of politics. War in itself as defined by Oxford dictionary is a state of armed conflict between different nations or states or different groups within a nation or state. The psychological and behavioral factors involved in terrorism are one of the most studied issues. It has implications across the board for both the detection and deterrence of terrorism. How terrorists communicate and the influence that it plays in growing terroristic ideology, mission, and goals are also of significant importance, as well. There are many things can be seen in the psychology of terrorism. Unfortunately there is not good science on psychological factors of terrorism; there are theories and educated opinions (DeAngelis, 2009). The one overarching factor is the fear with which terrorism is based. By definition, terrorism is acts that cause terror by one group on to another, usually for political goals ( Terrorism , n.d.). Why people suffer from these fears is related to their psychological behavior. Terrorist activity can be described as fostering a sense of helplessness and hopelessness, in demonstrating the incompetence of the authorities, destroying a sense of security and safety, and in provoking inappropriate reactions from individuals and authorities. (Alexander Klein, 2005). Terrorists themselves are affected by psychological behavior; their own and that of others around them. This three tiered system insulates distributors, as beer producers are not permitted to sell beer directly to retailers or consumers.[5] The regulations in place augment the power of buyers. Furthermore, distributors purchase volume as a percent of the focal industry s output is high. Conversely, the relative power of distributors is dependent on how reliant their revenues are on beer sales. Overall, due to the relatively larger number of distributors compared to beer manufacturers, the dominant position of the three largest brewers, as well as the brand loyalty created by the manufacturers through brand differentiation, the power of buyers is moderate. Substitutes The threat of substitutes is high for the beer industry, and specifically for this strategic group. When the dollar went up the market went down and so forth. In particular 2009 has seen that correlation play out in dramatic fashion. The stock market had a bottom in November 2008 and then the final bottom of the bear market run down in March 2009. The stock market as measured by the Dow 30 industrials bottomed in March at which time the Dollar index negatively correlated by peaking in price. In all the retracements and minor corrections that occurred, since then, in the Dow the dollar also experienced a similar but opposite reaction. Within the last week or so the dollar has begun to react with slightly more strength and the market seems to be attempting to dislodge that inverse correlation between a falling dollar and a rising market. On Friday Dec. 4th. the Dow was up strongly in the morning with a rising dollar. In the weeks and months prior to this if the dollar had risen strongly the market almost inevitably would have fallen. • 48. Essay Comparing Beowulf and The Saga of King Hrolf Kraki Beowulf and The Saga of King Hrolf Kraki There are so many similarities between the hero of the poem Beowulf and The Saga of King Hrolf Kraki, an Iceland saga representing 1000 years of oral traditions prior to the 1300 s when it was written, that these similarities cannot be attributed solely to coincidence. The Cambridge History of English and American Literature states that the hero of the poem, Beowulf himself, may be the same person as Bodvar Biarki, the chief of Hrolfr Kraki s knights (v1, ch3, s3, n13). George Clark in The Hero and the Theme mentions: The form of Beowulf taken as a whole suggests both the Bear s Son folktale type (especially as we find it in Scandinavia) and the combat myth . . . . (286). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bodvar avenges wrongs done to his family by killing the one who did the injustices; Beowulf avenges wrongs done to his family: he avenged Heardred s death, I repaid Hygelac ... with my bright sword, I was the killer of Daghrefin. When King Hring took sick and died, Bodvar became ruler of the kingdom; when Heardred was killed in battle, Beowulf became king. Bodvar thought of others first; he found support for his mother before leaving his people; Beowulf likewise placed the concerns of others before his own, putting his life in jeopardy in order to satisfy a family debt to King Hrothgar for paying wergild for the hero s father s indiscretion as a young man. Bodvar leaves Gautland to travel to the kingdom of the Danes; Beowulf leaves Geatland to travel to the kingdom of the Danes. Bodvar goes to King Hrolf, widely known for his generosity, magnificence and courage; Beowulf goes to King Hrothgar, widely known for the same virtues. In Denmark Bodvar meets a farmer who thinks that the hero is imposing; in Denmark Beowulf meets a coast guard who considers him imposing. The farmer s wife says to Bodvar, Your hand seems to be strong. . . . • 49. Summary Of The Article Deeply Flawed By Lance Armstrong The article Deeply flawed. Lance Armstrong admits using performance enhancing drugs is about Lance Armstrong admitting to using performance enhancing drugs in his sport of cycling. It outlines key concepts of the what he said in the Oprah interview. It explores how he took testosterone and human growth hormone, as well as EPO which is a naturally occurring substance in the body which stimulates red blood cell growth (it increase the amount of oxygen that can travel to your muscles, which improves recovery and endurance) and why he did it. The article has increased my knowledge on how EPO, testosterone and human growth hormones are the most commonly used drugs in cycling. It explored how the performance level of cyclist s was so high and this was because they were using performance enhancing drugs. I realised that the cyclist was taking the drugs because everyone was and there was very little chance of being caught. Armstrong admitted to using them because everyone in the field was and he believed he couldn t win without taking them. Armstrong at the time didn t even consider it cheating. It was just something you did if you wanted to win. Drugs in cycling lead to an environment where people weren t winning because they had trained the hardest and had the most ability but rather an environment where they didn t even consider taking performance enhancing drugs as cheating. The consequences and prospect of being caught were always there, but the cyclist were willing to cheat even though they could potentially lose everything; respect, titles and trust. The article also increased my knowledge on how they got away with it for so long. The drug use in cycling was occurring so much over Armstrong s time because the drug testers didn t have a way to find out whether the cyclist were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 50. Self-Images and Selfies Self Image and Selfies: A Freudian Analysis Chosen as Oxford dictionaries as the 2013 word of the year, the term selfie refers to a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website . The term has made a definite mark on popular culture, the frequency usage increased over 17,000% in the 2012 2013 year (BBC News). With the rise in popularity there has also been much discussion on the possible effects of the selfie phenomena. Some articles argue that taking a high number of selfies is a sign of the increasing narcissism and self objectification of modern culture that may lead to mental health issues such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Body Dysmorphic Disorder. Others suggest that taking selfies empowers the individual and promotes healthy levels of self esteem. While viewpoints on the topic tend to be diametrically divided, a Freudian perspective provides support for both views, as the topic is more complex than it first seems. In order to understand the interest in selfies, their ramifications, and to better apply a Freudian perspective, it is important to first discuss the cultural prevalence and significance. Selfies are widespread due to the ease of access of the technology. People everywhere, from the US President and the Pope to astronauts in space to elementary school children have the ability to capture photos of themselves and have been involved in selfies. The popularity of the practice is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
