The Foxfire Book Summary
When people think Appalachia, they think of West Virginia, but the Appalachian Mountains
stretch far from West Virginia and the people living in their hills have a shared cultural heritage
that is evident no matter what state they are a part of. The above excerpt is taken from The
Foxfire Book, the first in a series of books compiling various articles originally published in
Foxfire. Foxfire began in 1996 as a class project for high school students at a Georgian private
school. The students were tasked with interviewing locals to compile pieces of Appalachian
culture and wisdom that these locals had to offer. Aunt Arie is one of those locals and is the first
character you meet when you open The Foxfire Book. She is a little old lady living... Show more

There she shares with them stories about her past and her present as well as they help with her
chore of removing the eyes from a hogs head. From the way she talked about her preparation and
canning of the souse meat as she called it, to her way of speaking in general, anyone who s grown
up in the more rural areas of West Virginiawould almost feel like their reading a transcript of their
own grandma s words. Her generosity is not to be missed either. Even though she only has the
food she can grow herself or from her neighbors own generosities, she still found some to share
with the students for a meal. She also talks about, near the end of the interview, how she would
always make corn pones (corn bread) for her father to take with him to when he went to the city
and for the neighbors when they would come to visit. Her kindness and generosity doesn t go
unreturned by her neighbors though. As her description of the hog s head shows. Her neighbors
obviously really like her, enough to give her a hogs head with a surplus of meat, one that most
people would save for themselves, much less give away for free and refusing any payment at that.
It can also be said that she is not too proud to accept help from others, a trait that is very often
thought to be possessed by those living in the more southern parts of the

Dysfunction In American Beauty
American Beauty What is it saying about the pursuit of the American Dream?
The portrayal of an American family as shown in the movie, American Beauty, is one of
dysfunction. In fact, the homosexual couple is the only family that seem to display somewhat
normal behavior. As a non traditional family, the homosexual couple appear connected, loving, and
very happy. Most importantly, they demonstrate great respect for each other, something the
heterosexual families do not. This non traditional family is seen in small doses throughout the
movie. However, the families that are prominently displayed for the majority of the movie are The
Burnhams and The Fitts; the so called normal family unit. What is striking about this display of
normalcy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Burnhams strive to follow a modern version of the American Dream . The father, Lester, has
taken a passive role in the family and is viewed as feeble by both his daughter and wife. His wife,
Carolyn, sees herself as a strong and independent working woman. Her own insecurities become
more obvious throughout the film. She must have a beautiful single family home in a suburban
neighborhood, a successful career, and a display of perfectly groomed roses that line her fence.
Carolyn has insecurities that run deep. She often catches herself in a weak, emotional moment
where she feels inferior. A quote from Carolyn, My company sells an image. It s part of my job
to live that image. I interpreted this quote as how she views life on a global scale. This is her
American Dream and her own happiness. Janey Burnham, Lester and Carolyn s daughter, is
shown at the beginning of the film viewing articles online for breast augmentation. This reveals
her low self esteem and desire towards a perfect image. Janey feels as though she doesn t live up
to the standards of what a young teenager should look like. Throughout the film, the viewer sees
Janey redefine her idea of perfection and her growing sense of

Cuban Food Revolution Essay
Food Revolution in Cuba
When we think of Cuba, we think revolution, yet we will zoom in on a different revolution that
has been happening in Cuba and this is a food revolution. This crucial movement was in response
to crisis, hitherto it resulted in the most innovative act of sustainability. After Fidel Castro seized
power in 1959, the US placed an embargo on the country. They were maintained by the Soviet
Union, yet they would face a downfall that would propel innovation. When the Soviet Union
collapsed in 1991, deemed the Special Period, the country suffered a tremendous loss in the
supply of food, medicine, and fuel, and so had to find a way to feed the people. Action to grow in
vacant lots began and resulted in what is now called organoponicos. In Micky Ellinger s Urban
Agriculture in Cuba, he cites that there are over 7,000 organoponicos and growing. In the city of
Havana there are close to 2.1 million people, it houses more that 200 gardens and thousands of
backyards and rooftops where people are practicing the sustainable food growing practice of urban
agriculture. (Worldatlas.com)
The urban agriculture development succeeded due to structural changes implemented by the
Ministry of Agriculture in coordination with local and municipal governments, the efforts of
research centers, national and international non governmental organization (NGO S), collaborative
projects, and not to mention the determination of the farmers. (Murphy, 1999) The government s

America Needs Its Nerds By Leonid Fridman
Would you rather be a bigger nerd or a better athlete? I bet the majority of you said athlete because
that is what American culture is rooted in. However, in his article America Needs Its Nerds (1990)
Leonid Fridman proposes that For America s sake the anti intellectual values that pervade our
society must be fought. By first spelling out how the meaning of the terms geek and nerd are
derogatory, and secondly, explaining how at prestigious colleges nerds are ostracized while athletes
are idolized and third, describing how other countries treat the intellectually serious hold them and
teachers above athletes Fridman accomplishes his task. Through his utilization definition, rhetorical
question, and contrast, Fridman seeks to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
[Fridman contrasts the ideals of the nerd and of American culture by seeing how they stand up
at one of the most prestigious academic institutions: Harvard.] Fridman proclaims that even at
Harvard there is a minority of undergraduates for whom pursuing knowledge is the top priority
(lines 15 17). Many Americans see Harvard as the college attended by the best of the brightest
and would expect it to have a nerdy atmosphere, however this is not the case. It is a shocking
revelation for Americans to learn how the anti intellectual culture has seeped into every part of an
American s life: from kindergarten to college. Therefore, Fridman manipulates these perplexed and
shocked emotions to prompt Americans to agree with him through his statement enough is
enough, (line 29). Furthermore, he does this to demonstrate how Americans do not want to learn
for the sake of learning and only desire to attend college so they can get a better job and make
more money than valuing the education they are receiving. [At the end of the article, Fridman
exercises a series of rhetorical questions to draw an extra emphasis on how nerds keep America a
world superpower.] During paragraph eight Fridman proposes the question How long can America

Compare And Contrast Goblin Market And The Lady Shalott
Very Tempting
During the 1800s, women were completely controlled by the men in their lives. Most of their
fathers controlled their lives in order to find them a good spouse. They had to behave a well
manner to not be looked down as a harlot or a slut. In Goblin Market by Christina Rossetti, the
writer uses the goblins as men tempting to give two woman sexual pleasure. In Alfred Tennyson s
The Lady Shalott , he uses an imprison woman to show how woman were supposed to behave in the
1800s. Both Rossetti and Tennyson poems focus on temptation in woman society the Victorian era,
however the temptation leads to different outcome to depict readers that it could either cause good
fortune or death. In the Goblin Market , Rossetti uses the goblins ... Show more content on

The locking away of the lady represents the protection of her purity and innocence by her family
or society. This let readers understand how Tennyson see woman being treated in society during
that era. Tennyson uses her purity being locked away cause by a powerful male figure or by a
dominant society as a whole. The writer bring up a conflict in the poem, being that the lady was

Saudi Arabia is known to have heaps of gold. Adam tries to remove gold, by diving profound into

Science Behind Black Holes
all of you probably know what a black hole is, its a black thing in space that is like a vacuum and
sucks up anything in its way, this is pretty much what most people think of when they think of a
black hole. but today I m going to talk about the actual science behind black holes, how are they
made, whats inside of them, and what would happen if you went inside of one?
How are black holes made?
in order to get into how black holes are mad you need to understand how stars work. stars are
massive collections of mainly hydrogen atoms, within a stars core, nuclear fusion causes hydrogen
atoms get crushed into helium atoms which releases a ton of energy, this energy comes in the form
of radiation, this radiation pushes against gravity which makes a nice balance between the two.
Balance is key
For the star to maintain this balance it must maintain fusion within the core, however with much
larger stars, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
so once your inside what happens? there are a lot of theories to what happens,I m going to talk
about to of them, one theory is the following, black holes curve space so much that once you get
inside there is only one way to go, kind of like a very tight alleyway, as you would go down the
alley way, the mass of the black hole would get so concentrated that gravity would become
millions time stronger, ripping your cells apart until you are no more then a stream of atoms.
another theory states that when you enter the black hole you would quickly be introduced into a
massive firewall and be burned to death instantly. as far as how long you would survive either of
these options would depend on the size of the black hole. a smaller black hole would kill you
almost instantly while a massive black hole you could probably survive in for a while. how long?

Pt1420 Unit 2 Assignment 1
Starting off: Each Player is dealt 7 cards. Before the first hand is dealt, players must shuffle the
deck, and choose a random card from the deck. The lowest card chose has to deal. After this, the
dealer must deal 7 cards to each player in a clockwise rotation and flip one card face up on the
table. A player can have up to 7 cards in their hand at a time.
The whole point of the game is to neighbor the card that is currently placed on the table. Scoring
will be explained later so I don t confuse you off the start, but I will explain point scenarios and
how you should lay it down. It is kind of like the card game Speed or any other card games that
involve straights and the same suits to double points. For instance, if I have an A ♥ face up on
the table; my turn, and I have 7 cards in my hand: 7♠, J♥, A♦, K♠, 2♥, ... Show more

I would lay down the K♥ behind the A♥ and the 2♥ on top of the A♥ to earn 4 points.
In this game, a player is offered with the around the world effect that you see in Rummy and
other games out there. A player would earn 2 points for both cards placed and when both cards
are suited players earn double the value, so, in this case, 4 points will be earned. Once their turn is
done, a player must choose the King ♥ or the 2 ♥ for the next player to play off of. If the
player(s) can t play off of it, he/she can play off of it. If he/she can t play off the card, and no one
else can; then, the top card of the deck must be flipped for other players to play off of it. Also,
when cards run out of the deck player(s) turn who is up next would leave the top card that needs to
be played off of, and shuffle the rest underneath into the deck and place it down. The

Jane Eyre and The Great Gatsby
Jane Eyre and The Great Gatsby are two very intresting novels which are very eye opening to
one about how society is and the main message I got especially from Jane Eyre is that money is
not always the answer to personal happiness and love. Both novels believed in moral convinction
where you believe in one viewbook and it does not change for the better or worse.
Jane Eyre is a very intresting novel as soon as you open it the first few chapters are shocking as it
shows you two big themes one of which is class and the other is gender. In 1947 people would
judge you depending on your class and people in society would judge you and treat you by
where you are in the hierarchy tree. Another big theme was gender women were treated as third
class citizens no freedom at all. Jane Eyre was a novel about an orphan who is adopted into this
wealthy family. However she feels completely out the circle and not part of there family. The
family certainly did not make her feel part of them either they first saw her as poor because she
came from a poor background even though now she is adopted in there family they still saw her
like that and secondly she was a girl so that made things worse and those two combinations were
not good. At one point in the novel Mr reed said to her You have no business to take our books;
you are a dependant, mamma says; you have no money; your father left you none; you ought to
beg, and not to live here with gentleman s children like us . . he is telling her

A Long Term Care Resident
As for Ms. Sanchez, since she is a long term care resident, assessments are not done as often as
for skilled nursing patients that are also clients to Baptist. Her assessments are spread out
further than those for the clients in the skilled nursing floor. While she did ask what these
assessments were for, she was also glad the student did this. The client stated how sometimes
people are too worried about the medical aspect and overlook the fact that there are other things
they should look for. Aside from helping the facility by keeping it out of trouble with the state, it
also helps Ms. Sanchez pay for her stay at the facility as she is on Medicaid and often times,
scores on these assessments may help her qualify for the benefits. Having these assessments as a
requirement and a policy enforced by the state of Texas is important, not only for Ms. Sanchez
but all elders residing in BRC and other nursing home facilities. With these assessments, staff and
caregivers are aware of any changes to a client s health and allows the agency to create a plan
specifically designed for the individual. Diversity Issues When helping clients, it is important to be
aware that diversity issues may be encountered everywhere. According to Barker (2003) diversity is
defined as, Variety, or the opposite of homogeneity...usually refers to the range of personnel who
more accurately represent minority populations and people from varied backgrounds, cultures,
ethnicities, and viewpoints, (pg. 126).

Computer Dynamic s Current Data And Communication Network
The purpose of this report is to assess Computer Dynamic s current data and communication
network. The objective of the report is to offer a proposed solution for a modern network that meets
the organisation s needs. A review of existing network was conducted; school management and
number of students were observed. Current network performance was provided by the management.
A physical assessment of the whole school was conducted. Findings The existing network is
exhibiting congestion, bottlenecks, poor speed and is not adequate for growth in line with company
strategy . There is no physical connection between the two buildings occupied by the organisation.
The school is already sharing information through a VPN site to site tunnel. The current VPN
approach throughout the school is not efficient. There is currently a disaster recovery opportunity
in place of school data. Recommendations An investment is required to form a physical network
connection between the school, Fibre Optic is suggested. An investment in layer 3 switching
technology is recommended to take advantage of the Fibre Optic upgrade An investment in
hardware for disaster recovery is highly recommended. Two major departments should consider
moving to Cloud based technology to replace existing applications. 1 ANALYSIS OF USER

Analysis Of Drinking Coffee Elsewhere
The fictional story Drinking Coffee Elsewhere, by American author ZZ Packer, is about an African
American college student that encounters many behavioral issues throughout her freshman year at
Yale University. The main character of the story, Dina, is an insecure, immature, and selfish young
adult who has gone through tough moments in her life. Dina is the narrator of the story; it is told
through her eyes. After Dina mother s death, her attitude gets worse and she tries to be isolated
from everyone as much as she can. During Yale orientation, Dina introduced herself violently to
the class, the dean of the college gets worried about her behavior, and she is assigned to attend
counseling sessions with a psychologist. Dina then meets one of her poetry classmates accidently;
after Heidi knocks at Dina s door, they share time together, and become good friends. The main
charactersometimes may appear aggressive and uncaring do to the fact that she is dealing with self
identity problems. In the end, she suddenly appears upset and starts making many mistakes that end
up costing her friendship. After losing the only friend she has, she wishes to go back and fix the
mistakes she made.
The story Cathedral, by American author Raymond Carver, examines the negative attitude the
main character has about the visit of his wife s friend. The narrator is jealous about the
friendship of his wife and the blind man, which has last ten years. To the narrator the idea that a
stranger is coming over to his house makes him feel uncomfortable. He does not like that his wife
s friend is blind, and he makes up scenarios in his mind about this man that he has not even met.
The main setting of the story takes place at the main character s house, where he lives with his
wife. The story is told through the eyes of the narrator whose name is anonymous to the reader. The
narrator, throughout the story, had the opportunity to know the blind man and interact with him. At
the end he realized that the blind man is actually a very nice guy who he might also be able to
build a friendship with.

depicted in the hit movies Despicable Me, Despicable Me 2, and Minions work hard and don t

Obama, who says that minions stand for every ideal that America was built on (Kevin 53). The
problem is that minions only work for villains with nefarious plans of taking over the world. In
American society, studies found that 99% of the people feel like henchmen to the biggest
companies in all sectors of society, from Walmart to Wall Street (Bob 17). The relationship between
the minions and villains bears many similarities to the modern economic and political system of
America. The Despicable Me movie franchise is a comprehensive representation of capitalismin

Sharpen the saw . I know for me I forget a lot of the time that in order to be successful I should take
care of myself first. Remembering to take care of myself has never been a leadership habit I have
been good at. My previous supervisor who was also a good friend of mine was good at trying to
remind me to do things for me.
It is apparent that not only should it be to take care of myself physically and emotionally, but also
to keep up with the times. A lot of the timeshe would make sure to send me on housing

Bob Dylan Impact on Society
Bob Dylan: An Impact on American Society in the 1960 s
Amy Blanton Professor Porter History 22

1 The 1960s was a decade of liberation for music, public opinion, dance, invention, and the binds of
racism. From this generation spawned some of the greatest musical artists of all time one in
particular, Bob Dylan. Bob Dylan is considered to be the greatest influence on popular culture of
all time. However, Bob Dylan was not born an idol his legacy was a result of his surroundings.

Bob Dylan, was becoming an increasingly popular musician. Despite Dylan s goal to become a
famous rock n roll star, he soon became known as a folk singer. Most of his influences were from
country, folk, and rhythm and blues. One of his biggest role models was folk musician Woody
Guthrie Bob even adopted Guthrie s Okie accent. That was the tradition of folk music borrowing
from other artists. Dylan
4 borrowed from just about every blues or folk performer he ever saw; the music belonged to no
one. 12 In 1961, Dylan s dreams were becoming a reality he was finally going to become a star.
Columbia Records offered Dylan a contract, and in March of 1962, he released his first album,
Bob Dylan, and his second, The Freewheelin Bob Dylan, in 1963. It was around this time that
Bob started writing his protest songs (also called finger pointing songs sincere expressions of
frustration towards leaders who opposed change13), in response to the beginning of the civil rights
movement. There are several catalysts that led up to the civil rights movement. The integration of
major league baseball in 1947 and Truman s proposal to integrate the armed forces were both
pawns in starting the movement. Also, the integration of schools in 1954 was a major event in
history; the Supreme Court ruled that separate but equal in schools was no longer tolerable. In the
next year, an event took place that would change the course of the movement. On December 1,

The Ku Klux Klan (KK)
The Ku Klux Klan( K.K.K.) is a domestic terrorist organization established during the
Reconstruction era. Slavery was no longer a legal business during this time period but freedom
was hardly available to millions of newly freed blacks. The membership of the hate group was
dominated by lawmakers, more specifically republicans from Pulaski, Tennessee. White men and
women dressed in white robes and cone shaped masks and often rallied at night to terrorize black
communities. The mindsets of Klan members were centered on black and white no metaphor.
They felt that the white race was superior and blacks were inferior. In the southern states black
people were being murdered and terrorized by the thousands and because the Klan had direct
influences with the local police forces, judges, and medical professionals, there was no justice for
black victims.
The American government has a greater concern with combatting foreign terrorism than it does
with combatting domestic terrorist groups such as the KKK. Osama Bin Laden was a Saudi

It was a gorgeous summer day. the sun was shining, the birds were singing, and the world was at

to ward off the heat of the noon sun. They stampeded through town bumping over numerous people
and even one another to reach the cool blue waves. The menacing multitude took a sharp turn from
the streetto an old dusty road. The trees shook in the evening breeze and swayed slightly further
when the children hurried by. Dust faintly clouded out the light that poured over the path.
Finally they reached the dock and began to take off and swap clothes. The boys took off their

During the sail up to England the Armada were told to keep a crescent formation no matter what
happened this was the golden rule. The idea of this was so if an English ship was to come in
from behind they could scoop it up like a net. The formation was that the stronger ships would go
at the front so they could easily surround any English ships that threatened the centre. This was the
plan, however it did not all go that way! Lord Howard, commander of the English fleet, used some
of the lighter and faster English ships to ?pick off? some of the stragglers (ones that were lagging
behind) whilst they were sailing up the English channel. Unfortunately this did not really affect the
crescent shape. Next came arguably one of the smartest moves in the battle, on 7th August Sir
Francis Drake sent out a number of old ships that had been set on fire, the Spanish were petrified,
they were not sure if the Ships had explosives on it, if they did so did the Spanish ships and the
chances of them setting on fire was very high. This came as a complete surprise to the

AAV Gene Therapy
In a study titled AAV mediated factor IX gene transfer to skeletal muscle in patients with severe
hemophilia B, 8 patients were enrolled to further investigate the safety of intramuscular
injection of adeno associated viral vector. The study was also analyzed to determine the
effectiveness and duration of F.IX levels. Seven of the 8 patients were also previously infected
with Hepatitis C. Hence, muscle directed gene therapy reduced the potential of certain
complications compared to liver directed gene therapy. 4.1 Methods The patients were divided
up into three groups depending on the amount of injection sites with a limited dose of 1.5 x 1012
vector genomes (vg)/site. The vector was administered into one or both of the vastus lateralis
muscles located along the outside of the thigh. The number of sites for three patients in the low
dose cohort was 10 and 20. Three other patients in the medium dose cohort were given 30 to 50
injections. Two patients in the high dose cohort were given a total of 80 to 90 shots in the vastus
lateralis muscles, deltoid, and the soleus. Bethesda assays were performed on equal volumes of test
plasma and normal pooled plasma, which determined the residual F.IX activity after incubation.
Additionally, Western blot was also performed to detect anti F.IX antibodies. Polymerase chain

Brand Effect in markets
In these ages, the material consumption became an important part in people s daily life so it is
interesting to finding the relationship between brand and diverse groups in the society. There are
some words from the Philip Kotler and Gary Amstronga brand is defined as a name, term, sign
symbol (or a combination of these) that identifies the maker or seller of the product (Para. 3). In
the past, the meaning of brand refers an inevitable outcome that it is used to identify different
productions in markets. As the word improving, the effect of brand is not simple any more. It
means that using brand effect can bring producers both huge economic and social benefit. In the
other words, brand just like Mona Lisa s smile that everyone can feel that is charming but no one
can express it in clear words. However, brand effect shows different factors and consequence among
producers, customers and the whole market.
First, a good brand means that productions have nice quality, high benefit and good reputation.
Tracey follows supported that a brand offers the foundation to increase the sales volume and
customers need. The brand effect can put the commercial opportunity in motion; at the same time, it
can also improve the strength of merchants. For some small merchants who don t have strong
business, a good brand effect could bring more customers to come their

Confucianism In Chin The Fall Of The Qin Dynasty
There have been many debates among Chinese historians as to the cause of the fall of the Qin
Dynasty. The Qin used force and strict rules to keep a short leash on the people of the kingdom.
However, with the precautions taken by the government, they did not know it would ultimately be
their demise. In order to contain rebellion and to keep the people of the empire ignorant, the
combination of brutality, persecutions, antagonizing of the elites, and denying the Way, led to the
short reign and ultimately the fall of the Qin Dynasty.
In order to start at the very core of the problem with the Qin, one must look into Confucianism.
Confucius, known as Master Qiu or Our Master Kong, lived during the Spring and Autumn Period
of the Zhou Dynasty from 551 479 B.C.E. He was born in Lu in Eastern China of low nobility, but
educated. During this time, war was imminent. He spent a time during his life traveling from state
to state helping, and became employed by rulers who shared his view and perspective of life.
Now labeled as Confucianism, his teachings and philosophies shaped the Chinese world for
thousands of years. Confucius surviving teachings are published in his Analects. Three important
conducts that Confucius associated with moral nobility were: filial, humaneness, and ritual
decorum. Filial piety is the devotion, respect for elders and know your place within the family. A
young person who is filial and respectful of his elders rarely becomes the kind of person who is

Politics is the Main Factor in the Development of...
There are great differences and inequality between countries around the world. Many countries
don t have access to basic needs such as education, health care, law and order, safety why is that?
Why is there a gap between rich and poor? How did some countries manage to become rich while
others remained poor? These are the regularly asked questions about the development of countries.
There are different perspectives on the growth of countries; however the three main theories
mentioned in the book are due to geography, culture, ignorance or institutions. The authors of Why
nations fail Acemoglu and Robhinson have challenged these theories . They believe that political
institutions are the main factors for development of a well functioning nation and the determinants
of economic institutions. It s all about institutions, Daron Acemoglu, one of the authors,
explained. It s really about human made systems, rules, regulations, formal or informal that
creates different incentives. The book explains over the years how institutions played a big role
for the failure or success of nations. It is filled with interesting historical stories and evidence
from Latin America, England, Europe, Africa, Roman Empire and the Mayans .The geography
hypothesis states that land and people are the reasons for failure or success of a nation. It also
states that most countries in tropical areas are poor due to laziness and widespread of diseases.

Safe Drinking Water In Bangladesh Essay
Safe drinking water is essential for healthy life, and United Nations (UN) General Assembly
declared safe and clean drinking water as a human right essential to the full enjoyment of life [1].
Moreover, the importance of water, sanitation and hygiene for health and development has been
reflected in the outcomes of a series of international policy forums [1]. These have also included
health and water oriented conferences, but most importantly in the Millennium Development Goals
(MDG) adopted by the General Assembly of the UN in 2000. The UN General Assembly
declared the period from 2005 to 2015 as the International Decade for Action, Water for Life [1].
Access to safe drinking water is important as a health and development issue at national, regional
and local levels. Bangladesh, a developing country from South Asian (SA) region also takes several
steps for ensuring sanitation and safe drinking waterfacilities among the people. As a result,
Bangladesh has made great progress in this sector. The government also claimed that it has
achieved the MDG indicator of ensuring safe drinking water for 85% people of the country.
According to different demographic and health surveys, the percentage of using improved sources
of drinking water is about 98% (reported in the latest two surveys Multiple Indicator Cluster
Surveys (MICS) 2012 13 and Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS) 2014) [2,3].

Yellow Wallpaper Breakdown
The Yellow Wallpaper
The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is about how a woman progresses through a
nervous breakdown. The story is written in a first person narrative where the narrator is a
unnamed woman with mental health issues. She recently moved to a mansion with her husband,
because he believes that the residence is a great place for the narrator to recuperate from her
mental illness. However, the narrator s mental condition continues to get worse while living in the
mansion as she becomes more and more bothered by the wallpaper that is in her room. She ends
up becoming obsessed with the wallpaper and starts to imagine that the figures in the wallpaper
are moving. Towards the end of the story the narrator has a complete mental breakdown and goes
insane. The story ends when John, the narrator s husband, faints when he enters his wife s room,
because he is greatly disturbed when he finds her creeping around and becoming one of the figures
behind the wallpaper. The Yellow Wallpapercan be interpreted on a personal level by associating
it with the author. Gilman suffered from nervous breakdowns and depression because she was

Outsourcing Practices of Adidas, Converse, Nike, and Reebok
Outsourcing Practices of Adidas, Converse, Nike and Reebok Introduction Apparel and shoe
manufacturers continued to offload the more costly yet easily replicated part so their business
models to concentrate on brand building, marketing, sales and attaining greater distribution
channels globally. These are the pressures all apparel and shoe manufacturers face, and it is
particularly challenging in the athletic show industry (Kynge, 2009). Adidas, Converse, Nike and
Reebok have been outsourcing production of their shoes for in some cases nearly three decades.
Nike was one of the leaders in this strategy, seeing to create a more efficient supply chain and also
drop the labor and union costs of manufacturing in the U.S. (Boje, Khan, 2009). Adidas, Converse
and Reebok have all followed Nike s lead, with Adidas benefitting from the fall out generated when
investigate reports showed Nike using child labor throughout Pakistan and Vietnam (Boje, Khan,
2009). All four of these companies share a common prioritization of manufacturing operations, yet
none of them with the exception of Nike has a comprehensive Corporate Social Responsibility
(CSR) program in place to ensure ethical compliance to global standards of outsourcing in their
industry (Nike Investor Relations, 2012). The intent of this analysis is to compare and contrast the
four companies mentioned and their outsourcing practices. Their reasons for choosing to outsource
are very much the same; the industry is shrinking

Anti-Semitism In The 19th Century
Anti Semitism is described as a perception toward Jewish people which discriminated and
prejudiced them as a community. Jewish people as a minority group were discriminated from
Christians for ages. They were asked to abandon their religious formalities, in order to have full
rights. Jews were accused from the Christian church as ignorers of God, being devil people and
unwilling community to join the Christian community. All the claims or lies were considered as
accuracy during that time. In this paper, it will be discussed the importance of Anti Semitism from

English society as a whole, and the human condition in general that outlines the socio economic
problems of the time and the major communal evils. It condemns authoritative institutions including
the military, royalty, new industries, and the Church. Blake s tone creates a feeling of informative
bitterness, and is both angry and despondent at the suffering and increasing corruption of London s
society. Blake s sophisticated use of notation like capitalization, his specific change in meter, and
the point of view all clearly develop London. The point of view in which Blake employs to London

Here Blake is exposing the innocence that has been corrupted due to the present evil. This line
fills the readers mind with a dreadful image of children being stripped away of their innocence.
Here Blake specifically targets children, which are looked upon as pure and guiltless to help get
his point across to the reader. Blake s genius is evident throughout the poem where his changing
meter directly correlates to the point he is making at the moment. The meter is changed in the
last line of the first stanza from iambic tetrameter to anapestic dimeter possibly to stress the
section (Damon, 1965) The third stanza is anaspectic for the first foot but then reverts to iambic
for the last two feet of the line. The speaker begins here by condemning main foundations like the
Church and the military capitalizing both words. ?The Chimney sweepers cry? is basically an
exposure to the child labor prevalent during this era. Once again he uses a child to symbolize an
innocent victim terrorized by higher authority. Also, these cries are accusations against the Church.
Blake uses the phrase ?blackening Church? to expose the Church?s function as a tyrant rather than
a source of enlightenment (Lambert Jr., 1995) This line illustrates the Church both blackened by
soot and the exploited people who are forced to clean it. At this point it is clear to the reader that
Blake?s representation of the church is ironically evil. It forces oppression on the people of the
society. He

The High Scope curriculum incorporates diversity in its approach. High Scope incorporates
diversity through developmentally appropriate approaches, which allow the children to
progress at their own rate through the use of learning centers. According to Morrison, High
Scope does not focus on the child s deficits, but instead focuses on social, cognitive, and physical
abilities, which are important for every child especially ones with special needs. Teachers in the
High Scope approach will identify the developmental level of a special needs child. Then the
teachers will provide different experiences that are appropriate for a normal child at their
developmental age. For example, if a special needs child is four years old but is developmentally
at a two year old level then, the child would use gestures and point with the fingers to express their
plans. The teacher would then immerse the child in activities that provide opportunities to hearing
and using language (Morrison, 1976, p. 19 20). High Scope shows multi cultural respect in their

Unfulfilled Dreams Exposed in Hughes Harlem Essay
Unfulfilled Dreams Exposed in Hughes s Harlem
Most of us have dreams that we one day hope to fulfill. They could be little dreams that will take
little time and effort to accomplish, or they could be big dreams that will take more time and
energy to fulfill. Nevertheless, whether one s dream is as mundane as hitting the numbers or as
noble as hoping to see one s children reared properly, each dream is equally important to the
person who has it (Bizot 904). Each dream is also equally painful when it is taken away; or if we
never have the opportunity to make the dream a reality. In the poem Harlem by Langston Hughes,

For some of the words, he uses the dictionary meaning, yet for others he uses the connotative
meaning. When Hughes uses a word connotatively, he wants the reader to receive a deeper meaning
than the dictionary definition would give. For example, the word deferred in Harlem means
unfulfilled. The dictionary meaning, however, is to postpone. In the dictionary, postpone means
will happen at a later date or time. However, the dreams that Hughes refers to are ones that will
never come true.
Hughes also uses the connotative meaning for the word fester (line 4). The dictionary meaning
is to form pus, yet this definition does not seem strong enough for the emotion the word is
trying to express. The word fester in the poem means to become a source of pain or anger. This
is exactly what becomes of a person s deferred dream. It becomes painful because that dream
never leaves the person s mind. The person might forget about it for a little while and go on with
his or her life, but like most painful memories, it will pop up when the person least expects it to.
Each line in the poem Harlem gives an imaginative description of what a person with a deferred
dream can become. Since this poem does not define or give examples of the dream, we ll have to
make up our own (901). Lines two and three ask, Does it dry up / like a raisin in the sun? We know

Psychological theories of violence examine the internal characteristics that influence criminal
behavior. From this perspective, criminal behavior is viewed as a product of psychological deficits
in development, biological predispositions, psychopathic personality traits, environmental

Bottlenecks and Statistics
Bottlenecks and Statistics Bottlenecks in processes can and often do exist in any organization and
workplace setting, including in nursing settings. The bottlenecks identified in this case are
delivery of service, staff buy in, leadership role, and follow through; though these are all problems
for learning and development processes in the nursing unit they are not all equal in their
prevalence or their effects. In order to effectively manage the different bottlenecks and the potential
remedies for these bottlenecks, accurate and meaningful measurements of certain quantitative
aspects of the nurse setting and the identified problems must be accomplished. Statistical analysis
is one way to accomplish this measurement and assign varying degrees of significance, attention,
and resources to the different areas of concern that arise in this case. In this way, statistical
analysis can lead directly to practical action meant to improve knowledge and practice in the
nursing unit, not simply providing esoteric and or large scale interpretations of past data. Control
limits are a relatively simple tool in operation with rather profound effects on the interpretation of
data (Johnson Bhattacharyya, 2009). Consisting simply of horizontal lines plotted onto a

a specific area of the data and/or plot and thus restrict analysis to a bulk of the data points or, in

Senior Banquet is different in many ways than Senior Bash. Senior Banquet may not be as wild as
Senior Bash but both Crews and Allen feel that it s more together in a way.
The senior class isn t divided by classes or groups, Crews said.
The senior class gets more say as well in the Banquet, but not as much planning is required as it is

Analysis Of The Book The Temple
The Temple
Do you like scary stories, well you are in luck. This horror story is about a girl named Rose (the
narrator) and her family. Her mom s name is Kathleen, her dads name is Steve, and her brother s
name is Alex. One day they were on a family vacation and they find a temple out in the woods.
Now Rose has special skill of knowledge and fighting skills and Rose said to her family I don t
think we should go inside. I read about this temple and we could get caught in a booby trap and

annoying.

Meanwhile when all of them were screaming for their life... it all just stopped. What had
happened? Rose looked at the sealing and realized that a bump on the sealing had stopped the
boulder from killing them. It was dark, but a stream of light shown threw a crack in the sealing.
While the kids were panicking, Rose got an idea. Hey guys I have an idea. We can make that hole
in the sealing bigger and climb through!
At last the kids were able to climb through the sealing and get home. But where were they? OMG
OMG OMG! Katie, the neighbor girl said. First we almost got killed and know we are lost! Clam

the chances of getting kid napped! I want to go HOME!
Later on, the kids found a nearby police station. We are saved! Katie said. And soon they asked
for help and found their way home. They all told their parents about the adventure they had. The

Case Study Of Lonmin Oligopoly

The market structure of Lonmin oligopoly and this is due to the nature of

Amplats, Implats and Lonmin. Since the production of PGM is exported the number of alternate

It would not be easy for a new company to join this industry due to the licensing agreement
prerequisites, large expenditure for capital, powerful mergers or partnerships that exist, long
established competitive investments and the economies of scale. In the case of Lonmin these
would be: Lonmin has a joint venture with Amplats called Pandora Mines where they leverage off
each other s resources to gain quick access to a mining area near Brits in the Northwest Province of
South Africa. (Lonmin PLC, Anglo Platinum, 2001) . This provides both parties with significant
capital savings and reductions in unit operating costs. (Lonmin PLC, Anglo Platinum, 2001) In
2009 a successful $458 million Rights Issue was completed. This gave Lonmin greater financial
headroom to operate within their industry. This was achieved through the financial support of the
Lonmin shareholders (Lonmin PLC, 2009) . Lonmin and Shanduka have a strong partnership that

Rapid Decline Of Crime In The 1990s
Components of the Rapid Decline in Crime of the 1990s The 1960s were more than just Civil
Rights and Woodstock. Contrary to what the people believed, the 1960s was an important decade
in regards to ending the peaceful period of crime decline that the United States had been enjoying
since 1930 (Levitt, Dubner 115 146). The United States was about to see the highest crimerates in
its history by the end of the 1980s, heading for the 1990s. Upon entering the 1990s though, what
was being recorded were record levels of crime, but in the opposite direction as predicted (Levitt,
Dubner 115 146). Instead of the highest crime rates, the United States actually observed rates
similar to that of the 1960s. Although the 1960s were when crime began to steadily... Show more

crime rates in history, and as a result, many different strategies were being implemented in order
to control the expected increase in the 1990s. In effect, the 1990s saw the largest decrease in crime
in US history, and had the lowest crime levels since 1960

In the year of 1863, two New York Democrats with the intention of obstructing Abraham Lincoln s
bid for re election coined the term miscegenation . They believed that miscegenation was crucial to
a progressive humanity. The Democrats posed as Republicans and anonymously wrote and
published a seventy two page propaganda pamphlet, advocating for inter racial marriages between
the white men and Negro . The article was entitled Miscegenation: The Theory of the Blending of
the Races, Applied to the American White Man and Negro. During this time, the American Civil
War was in action and two years later slavery in the United Sates was abolished. Da Cruz Brito

In the sectioned of the pamphlet entitled Superiority of mixed races , Brazil was believed to be a
country where the people were miscegenated, to further support the idea of mixing in the United
States. However, the attitudes of race mixing in both countries were significantly different. Brazil
has always been a black and mixed blood populated society, whereas the United States had always
been white blood dominated compared to its black population. This paper will compare the
differences of race mixing in the United States and Brazil after the American Civil War.
First and foremost, it is important to differentiate the perception of black and white race mixing
in both the United States and Brazil. In the United States, the offspring produced between blacks
and whites are considered black. However, the status of a child produced by a white mother is
typically reflected by the status of the mother. Degler revealed that, From this perspective, the
most feared combination in unions between blacks and whites was the one in which the white
women married a black men . This is because during slavery, when a slave owner would
impregnate his female slaves, the children of the slave would also become a slave, but if the
mother is white, it is very unlikely that the child would become a slave. Consequently in Brazil, due
to larger acceptance range of race mixing, the descendants of an African and European relation

The Story of an Hour: Story Analysis The Story of an Hour is a great portrayal of how married
women felt during the 1870s. This story is a serious representation of how difficult it was to get

rejoices at the news of her husbands death. Due to her disappointment of seeing that her husband
had not actually passed, Mrs. Mallard dies. One might question why she was overjoyed by that
upsetting news; however, she was justified in feeling cheerful. In this story, Mrs. Mallard states

Futility, Spring Offensive And Exposure By Wilfred Owen
Eco critics ask questions such as whether or not Everything is connected to everything else , in
order to explore the realms of human thought. In relation to Wilfred Owen s poems; Futility, Spring
Offensive, and Exposure, this theory that all living things are interconnected is a multifaceted one.
Natureis used heavily as a centralised motif in each of them, albeit in different ways, in order to
represent a range of both internal and external battles Owen s soldiers are forced to undergo
during active service in the war. The soldiers are also depicted to depend on, as well as exploit
their rural surroundings in equal measure, particularly concerning military action. As a concept,
ecocriticism is a contemporary approach and it is therefore highly unlikely that Owen would have
intentionally included such heavily cited links with eco criticism, especially considering that he
claimed his subject to be, war and the pity of war . Owen himself believed that the war he was
fighting was needless, and only caused pain and suffering. His work sheds light on the harsh,
brutality of warfare whilst challenging the patriotic nature of other existing war poems at the time,
believing that they did not truly depict the war he was all too familiar with, true Poets must be
Truthful . However, applying Owen s work through an ecological perspective is not a completely
futile, as Owen s depth of understanding can provide us with insight into the effect humans,
particularly soldiers, had on their biosphere during this period in history and vice versa; this is, The
fundamental premise that human culture is connected to the physical world, affecting it and
affected by it. It is these connections with the natural world that highlight both Owen s love of the
natural world, influenced by the likes of Romanticist poet John Keats, and his sense of anguish
towards humanity and their distorted concept of war.
The obscure relationship between man and environment is addressed abundantly throughout each
of the throughout the three poems, as it is made apparent that Owen tended to use pathetic fallacy
as a motif to reflect the internal conflicts of the soldiers. When the weather is peaceful, the soldiers
are too, as seen briefly in

Economic Theories Of International Free Trade Essay
Throughout the centuries of economic theories, there have always been major disagreements
amongst economists. Each believing their theory provides a better explanation or solution to the
economic situations the globe finds itself in. The anomaly to these disagreements is the theory, first
introduced by Adam Smith, which states that international free trade is in the best interest of the
trading countries and the ever globalizing world as a whole. This essay shall compare the views of
the great economists; namely Adam Smith and David Ricardo, on their economic theories of
international free trade.
Over the years of economic development and globalisation, trade has taken place between people
and countries. Dating back to the beginning of AD, trade occurred between the Roman Empire,
Parthian Empire and the Han Dynasty. During the days of colonisation, the colonised countries
would export the raw materials to the colonising countries and import the finished manufactured
goods from them. In the modern day, globalised world we live in, international trade occurs between
countries companies, peoples and governments by the second (Elena, 2015). There are often
restrictions on trade between countries, such as import taxes, to try incentives the population to buy
domestically produced goods.
Adam Smith, who is considered a pioneer of the great economists, was a Scottish born moral
Philosopher, political economist and thought of as a key figure in the Scottish enlightenment. He

Slave by definition is a person who is the legal property of another and is forced to obey them.
That about sums up what slavery really is in our mind and is pretty much the definition that we all
picture when we think about slaves and slavery. But this is not what slavery truly was within the
antebellum time period. Most of the slaves had a whole different outlook on the way they viewed,
and acted and while living in their unfortunate circumstances. This is one of the few things that will
be discussed further on within this paper. The main concept of this paper will be to discuss slavery
in three sections; these sections will be discussing the types of people who were enslaved, and the
nature of their bondage in the first section. The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Essay about Teaching Goals and Philosophy
Teaching Goals and Philosophy
Entering the field of education requires a person to take on many very important responsibilities.
Teachers play a very vital role in the lives and futures of many individuals. Through the perspective
of a teacher, many students come and go year after year. The names and faces of many students are
often forgotten as you enter and new year with new students, new faces, and new names. On the
other hand, although educators encounter many more students then students do educators, a teacher
has a much more substantial impact on the life of a student. Upon taking this into consideration, I
was led to ask myself many important questions. What do I hope to accomplish as a teacher? What
do I wish ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This child needs to be reassured that this is okay, everyone learns by different methods and at
different rates. For some students, encouragement is very important. For example, if a child is not
receiving the necessary encouragement from his or her parents to do well in school, then they may
not see the importance in it.
More time and attention should be given to those students who need it. Teachers should pay
attention to the special needs of their students and do whatever they can do to fulfill them. While
some students are more independent and seem to have no problems studying and progressing with
the material given to them, others need to be instructed and guided on a one on one basis by the
teacher at whatever pace suits them yet challenges them.
Also, agreeing with the Pragmatic method, I feel strongly about hands on approach to learning. I
think that students develop a fuller understanding of how things work when this approach is used. I
see methods such as experimentation and problem solving to be very beneficial; it promotes
interest and comprehension.
I also feel that a classroom should be a very comfortable, non threatening, and inviting environment.
Children shouldn t have to dread going to school, but should see it as an opportunity to better
themselves and their future.
As for curriculum, I feel that a variety of subjects should be taught. Such as: History, Math and

Reflection Of My Life Essay
One s dream and aspirations to supersede in life must be stronger and greater than limitations set
forth by others. The experience that were bestowed to me during my short life has elevated me to
the woman I am today. Please walk with me as I give you the opportunity to see the world from
my eyes:
To be the person that I am now, I had to reflect and accept accountability of my past actions. My
past is one that many would love to erase from their memory, a past, which remained dormant,
until I found myself. The steps involved in regaining myself encompassed letting go of my anger
and self pity. I had to look within myself and see my self s worth, which lead to my belief that I ran

My last year in college, changed the whole course of my life. Near the end of my junior year, I
befriended a guy, who never would become my boyfriend. I knew he was infatuated with me, so I
lead him on. He ended up stalking me and making several death threats. I never understood the
phrase in fear of your life , until then. Tallahassee Police Department (TPD) got involved but there
wasn t much they could do except file a police report and wait. This was a very frightening time
in my life and consequently I became very disconnected with life. I never provided TPD with my
stalker s name, in fear that he would kill me if I did. I moved to a different apartment complex
across town, thinking that it would make all my problems go away. He ended up finding me and
making more serious death threats against me and my family if I didn t leave Tallahassee.
I had a mental breakdown after the last death threat and I left Florida State University my senior

Compare And Contrast Frederick Douglass And Robert Rodriguez
Frederick Douglass vs Robert Rodriguez; the Quest for Knowledge
Education is more than just picking up a book or a pen and figuring out how to use it. It is the
very learning process that incorporates itself into one s development in becoming a contributing
part of society, yet those like Frederick Douglass (a former slave) and Robert Rodriguez (who was
Hispanic American) had to pay an extra sacrifice to achieve it. Both men knew the significance of
learning and went through a great struggle to become educated when they were younger. However,
because they came from different backgrounds with a variety of different influences, Douglass and
Rodriguez had different approaches to fulfilling their quests for knowledge.

him how to read and write because, like many other slave owners, she believed that the terms
slavery and education did not correlate with each other (paragraph 2). With this idea in mind,
Douglass was convinced that in order to get closer to his freedom, he had to complete his education,
thus was further motivated to continue his learning of how to read and write. On the other hand,
Rodriguez was a bicultural, yet free, American who grew up with a Hispanic family that did not

The Nature of Discipleship According to Mark s Gospel...
The Nature of Discipleship According to Mark s Gospel
Discipleship is usually thought of as following Jesus, being a preacher and a teacher. Somebody
who believes in something, or who believes in someone, and leaves everything behind them to
try to make others believe the same is my personal belief of a disciple. In actual fact, the Old
Testament word Talmid is a learner , and more obviously in the New Testament, a Diskipolos is a
follower . The other important area of discipleship is serving others. When a disciple is healing a
person, they are serving them, as he serving Jesus and God. So discipleship can be summed up; to
follow, to learn, to preach, to believe, to serve. All factors are... Show more content on

And yes, the disciples did heal, they did preach and they did cast out evil. The apostles returned
and met with Jesus, and told him all they had done and taught (Mark 6:30) and They went out
and preached that people should turn away from their sins. They drove out many demons, and
rubbed olive oil on many sick people and healed them (Mark 6:12 13). Both of these quotes show
us that the disciples followed instructions and did them well. However, their understanding of
Jesus and his teachings wasn t very good. They understood neither the amazing powers Jesus
possessed nor the wonders he could perform. Even though he would explain everything to them ,
in situations such as The Calming of the Storm and when Jesus walked on water, they just didn t
have the strength to believe or the depth to understand. When the boat was filling with water in
the Calming of the Storm (Mark 4:35 41), the disciples awoke Jesus to say, Teacher, don t you care
that we are about to die? , Jesus said back to his disciples Why are you frightened? Have you still
no faith? The story in Chapter 6, verses forty nine to fifty is similar. It s a ghost! , the disciples
screamed when they saw Jesus walking on water. They were all terrified when they saw

The Portrait Of Madame De Pompadour
I remember the precise moment when I first laid eyes on the Portrait of Madame de Pompadour.
At about ten years of age, my parents bought a book titled: Women who read are dangerous. This
book depicted several paintings, sculptures and photographs of women reading; among which
was the Portrait of Madame de Pompadour. The second I witnessed the detail and extravagance
of the painting, I fell in love with it. Luckily at the time I was living in Bavaria, coincidentally
also the current home of said painting. When I went to see it, it was much larger in person than I
could have ever envisioned and much more vibrant in color and detail than I could have ever
imagined. Over the years I have seen many more paintings, I have to yet be overwhelmed the way
I was when I first saw the Portrait of Madame de Pompadour. French artist François Boucher
painted the legendary Portrait of Madame de Pompadour in 1756. He utilized oil on canvas to
paint the 201 Г— 157 cm (79.1 Г— 61.8 in) portrait of the chief mistress to Louis XV, Jeanne
Antoinette Poisson aka. The Marquise de Pompadour (also referred to as Madame de Pompadour).
Boucher, who lived from 1703 70, was the archetypal painter of the French rococo, a style that
subordinated subject matter to a lacy, frothy sensuality in which bodies, clothes, clouds, waves and
forests become not themselves but images of desire, metaphors for titillation. Among the most
prolific of his generation, he worked in virtually every medium and every

What Are The Five Major Models Of Organizations That...
Individuals are all different but they all share similar characteristics. It comes within the leader
to recognize the differences and similarities. Leaders have to analyze and comprehend the
employees so that workers perform a better outcome. Organizations need a mission to look
forward; this objective should be shared or compatible with employees so that outcomes are
better and more effective. There are five major models of organization that characterized
employees. These models are Autocratic model, Custodial model, Supportive model, collegial
model, and the System model Employers have to know when and why they should apply each
model, and if to even apply them at all. The working environment is an enormous and crucial
component that influences employees performance. Leaders have to know how and when to
motivate the individuals. They have to understand that workers have to motivate to work,
nevertheless they still have to be focused toward the organization s mission. Organizations are
very complex but simple at the same time. An organization is a group of people that are organized
to work together to achieve a common goal or goals. The organization needs a mission to look
forward to, this mission or objective will make the organization concentrate and act towards their

  • 2. The Foxfire Book Summary When people think Appalachia, they think of West Virginia, but the Appalachian Mountains stretch far from West Virginia and the people living in their hills have a shared cultural heritage that is evident no matter what state they are a part of. The above excerpt is taken from The Foxfire Book, the first in a series of books compiling various articles originally published in Foxfire. Foxfire began in 1996 as a class project for high school students at a Georgian private school. The students were tasked with interviewing locals to compile pieces of Appalachian culture and wisdom that these locals had to offer. Aunt Arie is one of those locals and is the first character you meet when you open The Foxfire Book. She is a little old lady living... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There she shares with them stories about her past and her present as well as they help with her chore of removing the eyes from a hogs head. From the way she talked about her preparation and canning of the souse meat as she called it, to her way of speaking in general, anyone who s grown up in the more rural areas of West Virginiawould almost feel like their reading a transcript of their own grandma s words. Her generosity is not to be missed either. Even though she only has the food she can grow herself or from her neighbors own generosities, she still found some to share with the students for a meal. She also talks about, near the end of the interview, how she would always make corn pones (corn bread) for her father to take with him to when he went to the city and for the neighbors when they would come to visit. Her kindness and generosity doesn t go unreturned by her neighbors though. As her description of the hog s head shows. Her neighbors obviously really like her, enough to give her a hogs head with a surplus of meat, one that most people would save for themselves, much less give away for free and refusing any payment at that. It can also be said that she is not too proud to accept help from others, a trait that is very often thought to be possessed by those living in the more southern parts of the ... • 3. Dysfunction In American Beauty American Beauty What is it saying about the pursuit of the American Dream? The portrayal of an American family as shown in the movie, American Beauty, is one of dysfunction. In fact, the homosexual couple is the only family that seem to display somewhat normal behavior. As a non traditional family, the homosexual couple appear connected, loving, and very happy. Most importantly, they demonstrate great respect for each other, something the heterosexual families do not. This non traditional family is seen in small doses throughout the movie. However, the families that are prominently displayed for the majority of the movie are The Burnhams and The Fitts; the so called normal family unit. What is striking about this display of normalcy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Burnhams strive to follow a modern version of the American Dream . The father, Lester, has taken a passive role in the family and is viewed as feeble by both his daughter and wife. His wife, Carolyn, sees herself as a strong and independent working woman. Her own insecurities become more obvious throughout the film. She must have a beautiful single family home in a suburban neighborhood, a successful career, and a display of perfectly groomed roses that line her fence. Carolyn has insecurities that run deep. She often catches herself in a weak, emotional moment where she feels inferior. A quote from Carolyn, My company sells an image. It s part of my job to live that image. I interpreted this quote as how she views life on a global scale. This is her American Dream and her own happiness. Janey Burnham, Lester and Carolyn s daughter, is shown at the beginning of the film viewing articles online for breast augmentation. This reveals her low self esteem and desire towards a perfect image. Janey feels as though she doesn t live up to the standards of what a young teenager should look like. Throughout the film, the viewer sees Janey redefine her idea of perfection and her growing sense of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Cuban Food Revolution Essay Food Revolution in Cuba When we think of Cuba, we think revolution, yet we will zoom in on a different revolution that has been happening in Cuba and this is a food revolution. This crucial movement was in response to crisis, hitherto it resulted in the most innovative act of sustainability. After Fidel Castro seized power in 1959, the US placed an embargo on the country. They were maintained by the Soviet Union, yet they would face a downfall that would propel innovation. When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, deemed the Special Period, the country suffered a tremendous loss in the supply of food, medicine, and fuel, and so had to find a way to feed the people. Action to grow in vacant lots began and resulted in what is now called organoponicos. In Micky Ellinger s Urban Agriculture in Cuba, he cites that there are over 7,000 organoponicos and growing. In the city of Havana there are close to 2.1 million people, it houses more that 200 gardens and thousands of backyards and rooftops where people are practicing the sustainable food growing practice of urban agriculture. (Worldatlas.com) The urban agriculture development succeeded due to structural changes implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture in coordination with local and municipal governments, the efforts of research centers, national and international non governmental organization (NGO S), collaborative projects, and not to mention the determination of the farmers. However, in his article America Needs Its Nerds (1990) Leonid Fridman proposes that For America s sake the anti intellectual values that pervade our society must be fought. By first spelling out how the meaning of the terms geek and nerd are derogatory, and secondly, explaining how at prestigious colleges nerds are ostracized while athletes are idolized and third, describing how other countries treat the intellectually serious hold them and teachers above athletes Fridman accomplishes his task. Through his utilization definition, rhetorical question, and contrast, Fridman seeks to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... [Fridman contrasts the ideals of the nerd and of American culture by seeing how they stand up at one of the most prestigious academic institutions: Harvard.] Fridman proclaims that even at Harvard there is a minority of undergraduates for whom pursuing knowledge is the top priority (lines 15 17). Many Americans see Harvard as the college attended by the best of the brightest and would expect it to have a nerdy atmosphere, however this is not the case. It is a shocking revelation for Americans to learn how the anti intellectual culture has seeped into every part of an American s life: from kindergarten to college. Therefore, Fridman manipulates these perplexed and shocked emotions to prompt Americans to agree with him through his statement enough is enough, (line 29). Furthermore, he does this to demonstrate how Americans do not want to learn for the sake of learning and only desire to attend college so they can get a better job and make more money than valuing the education they are receiving. [At the end of the article, Fridman exercises a series of rhetorical questions to draw an extra emphasis on how nerds keep America a world superpower.] During paragraph eight Fridman proposes the question How long can America ... Science Behind Black Holes all of you probably know what a black hole is, its a black thing in space that is like a vacuum and sucks up anything in its way, this is pretty much what most people think of when they think of a black hole. but today I m going to talk about the actual science behind black holes, how are they made, whats inside of them, and what would happen if you went inside of one? How are black holes made? in order to get into how black holes are mad you need to understand how stars work. stars are massive collections of mainly hydrogen atoms, within a stars core, nuclear fusion causes hydrogen atoms get crushed into helium atoms which releases a ton of energy, this energy comes in the form of radiation, this radiation pushes against gravity which makes a nice balance between the two. Balance is key For the star to maintain this balance it must maintain fusion within the core, however with much larger stars, the ... • 10. Jane Eyre and The Great Gatsby Jane Eyre and The Great Gatsby are two very intresting novels which are very eye opening to one about how society is and the main message I got especially from Jane Eyre is that money is not always the answer to personal happiness and love. Both novels believed in moral convinction where you believe in one viewbook and it does not change for the better or worse. Jane Eyre is a very intresting novel as soon as you open it the first few chapters are shocking as it shows you two big themes one of which is class and the other is gender. In 1947 people would judge you depending on your class and people in society would judge you and treat you by where you are in the hierarchy tree. Another big theme was gender women were treated as third class citizens no freedom at all. Jane Eyre was a novel about an orphan who is adopted into this wealthy family. However she feels completely out the circle and not part of there family. The family certainly did not make her feel part of them either they first saw her as poor because she came from a poor background even though now she is adopted in there family they still saw her like that and secondly she was a girl so that made things worse and those two combinations were not good. At one point in the novel Mr reed said to her You have no business to take our books; you are a dependant, mamma says; you have no money; your father left you none; you ought to beg, and not to live here with gentleman s children like us . . he is telling her ... However there are many other reasons: Firstly Philip II couldn?t accept that was not the king of England, as he was married to Queen Mary I, who was the Queen before Elizabeth. During the sail up to England the Armada were told to keep a crescent formation no matter what happened this was the golden rule. The idea of this was so if an English ship was to come in from behind they could scoop it up like a net. The formation was that the stronger ships would go at the front so they could easily surround any English ships that threatened the centre. This was the plan, however it did not all go that way! Lord Howard, commander of the English fleet, used some of the lighter and faster English ships to ?pick off? some of the stragglers (ones that were lagging behind) whilst they were sailing up the English channel. Unfortunately this did not really affect the crescent shape. Next came arguably one of the smartest moves in the battle, on 7th August Sir Francis Drake sent out a number of old ships that had been set on fire, the Spanish were petrified, they were not sure if the Ships had explosives on it, if they did so did the Spanish ships and the chances of them setting on fire was very high. • 23. Confucianism In Chin The Fall Of The Qin Dynasty There have been many debates among Chinese historians as to the cause of the fall of the Qin Dynasty. The Qin used force and strict rules to keep a short leash on the people of the kingdom. However, with the precautions taken by the government, they did not know it would ultimately be their demise. In order to contain rebellion and to keep the people of the empire ignorant, the combination of brutality, persecutions, antagonizing of the elites, and denying the Way, led to the short reign and ultimately the fall of the Qin Dynasty. Blake uses the phrase ?blackening Church? to expose the Church?s function as a tyrant rather than a source of enlightenment (Lambert Jr., 1995) This line illustrates the Church both blackened by soot and the exploited people who are forced to clean it. At this point it is clear to the reader that Blake?s representation of the church is ironically evil. It forces oppression on the people of the society. He ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to Morrison, High Scope does not focus on the child s deficits, but instead focuses on social, cognitive, and physical abilities, which are important for every child especially ones with special needs. Teachers in the High Scope approach will identify the developmental level of a special needs child. Then the teachers will provide different experiences that are appropriate for a normal child at their developmental age. For example, if a special needs child is four years old but is developmentally at a two year old level then, the child would use gestures and point with the fingers to express their plans. The teacher would then immerse the child in activities that provide opportunities to hearing and using language (Morrison, 1976, p. 19 20). They could be little dreams that will take little time and effort to accomplish, or they could be big dreams that will take more time and energy to fulfill. Nevertheless, whether one s dream is as mundane as hitting the numbers or as noble as hoping to see one s children reared properly, each dream is equally important to the person who has it (Bizot 904). Each dream is also equally painful when it is taken away; or if we never have the opportunity to make the dream a reality. For some of the words, he uses the dictionary meaning, yet for others he uses the connotative meaning. When Hughes uses a word connotatively, he wants the reader to receive a deeper meaning than the dictionary definition would give. For example, the word deferred in Harlem means unfulfilled. The dictionary meaning, however, is to postpone. In the dictionary, postpone means will happen at a later date or time. However, the dreams that Hughes refers to are ones that will never come true. Hughes also uses the connotative meaning for the word fester (line 4). The dictionary meaning is to form pus, yet this definition does not seem strong enough for the emotion the word is trying to express. The word fester in the poem means to become a source of pain or anger. This is exactly what becomes of a person s deferred dream. It becomes painful because that dream never leaves the person s mind. The person might forget about it for a little while and go on with his or her life, but like most painful memories, it will pop up when the person least expects it to. Each line in the poem Harlem gives an imaginative description of what a person with a deferred dream can become. Since this poem does not define or give examples of the dream, we ll have to make up our own (901). Lines two and three ask, Does it dry up / like a raisin in the sun? We know that a ... The bottlenecks identified in this case are delivery of service, staff buy in, leadership role, and follow through; though these are all problems for learning and development processes in the nursing unit they are not all equal in their prevalence or their effects. In order to effectively manage the different bottlenecks and the potential remedies for these bottlenecks, accurate and meaningful measurements of certain quantitative aspects of the nurse setting and the identified problems must be accomplished. Statistical analysis is one way to accomplish this measurement and assign varying degrees of significance, attention, and resources to the different areas of concern that arise in this case. In this way, statistical analysis can lead directly to practical action meant to improve knowledge and practice in the nursing unit, not simply providing esoteric and or large scale interpretations of past data. Control limits are a relatively simple tool in operation with rather profound effects on the interpretation of data (Johnson Bhattacharyya, 2009). Futility, Spring Offensive And Exposure By Wilfred Owen Eco critics ask questions such as whether or not Everything is connected to everything else , in order to explore the realms of human thought. In relation to Wilfred Owen s poems; Futility, Spring Offensive, and Exposure, this theory that all living things are interconnected is a multifaceted one. Natureis used heavily as a centralised motif in each of them, albeit in different ways, in order to represent a range of both internal and external battles Owen s soldiers are forced to undergo during active service in the war. The soldiers are also depicted to depend on, as well as exploit their rural surroundings in equal measure, particularly concerning military action. As a concept, ecocriticism is a contemporary approach and it is therefore highly unlikely that Owen would have intentionally included such heavily cited links with eco criticism, especially considering that he claimed his subject to be, war and the pity of war . Owen himself believed that the war he was fighting was needless, and only caused pain and suffering. His work sheds light on the harsh, brutality of warfare whilst challenging the patriotic nature of other existing war poems at the time, believing that they did not truly depict the war he was all too familiar with, true Poets must be Truthful . However, applying Owen s work through an ecological perspective is not a completely futile, as Owen s depth of understanding can provide us with insight into the effect humans, particularly soldiers, had on their biosphere during this period in history and vice versa; this is, The fundamental premise that human culture is connected to the physical world, affecting it and affected by it. It is these connections with the natural world that highlight both Owen s love of the natural world, influenced by the likes of Romanticist poet John Keats, and his sense of anguish towards humanity and their distorted concept of war. The obscure relationship between man and environment is addressed abundantly throughout each of the throughout the three poems, as it is made apparent that Owen tended to use pathetic fallacy as a motif to reflect the internal conflicts of the soldiers. On the other hand, Rodriguez was a bicultural, yet free, American who grew up with a Hispanic family that did not think much about the concept of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 54. The Nature of Discipleship According to Mark s Gospel... The Nature of Discipleship According to Mark s Gospel Discipleship is usually thought of as following Jesus, being a preacher and a teacher. Somebody who believes in something, or who believes in someone, and leaves everything behind them to try to make others believe the same is my personal belief of a disciple. In actual fact, the Old Testament word Talmid is a learner , and more obviously in the New Testament, a Diskipolos is a follower . The other important area of discipleship is serving others. When a disciple is healing a person, they are serving them, as he serving Jesus and God. So discipleship can be summed up; to follow, to learn, to preach, to believe, to serve. All factors are... The apostles returned and met with Jesus, and told him all they had done and taught (Mark 6:30) and They went out and preached that people should turn away from their sins. They drove out many demons, and rubbed olive oil on many sick people and healed them (Mark 6:12 13). Both of these quotes show us that the disciples followed instructions and did them well. However, their understanding of Jesus and his teachings wasn t very good. They understood neither the amazing powers Jesus possessed nor the wonders he could perform. Even though he would explain everything to them , in situations such as The Calming of the Storm and when Jesus walked on water, they just didn t have the strength to believe or the depth to understand. • 55. The Portrait Of Madame De Pompadour I remember the precise moment when I first laid eyes on the Portrait of Madame de Pompadour. At about ten years of age, my parents bought a book titled: Women who read are dangerous. This book depicted several paintings, sculptures and photographs of women reading; among which was the Portrait of Madame de Pompadour. The second I witnessed the detail and extravagance of the painting, I fell in love with it. Luckily at the time I was living in Bavaria, coincidentally also the current home of said painting. When I went to see it, it was much larger in person than I could have ever envisioned and much more vibrant in color and detail than I could have ever imagined. Over the years I have seen many more paintings, I have to yet be overwhelmed the way I was when I first saw the Portrait of Madame de Pompadour. French artist FranГ§ois Boucher painted the legendary Portrait of Madame de Pompadour in 1756. He utilized oil on canvas to paint the 201 Г— 157 cm (79.1 Г— 61.8 in) portrait of the chief mistress to Louis XV, Jeanne Antoinette Poisson aka. The Marquise de Pompadour (also referred to as Madame de Pompadour). Boucher, who lived from 1703 70, was the archetypal painter of the French rococo, a style that subordinated subject matter to a lacy, frothy sensuality in which bodies, clothes, clouds, waves and forests become not themselves but images of desire, metaphors for titillation. Among the most prolific of his generation, he worked in virtually every medium and every ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
